This is an "old" or newly rediscovered Pride and Joy. I'd be interested to hear what people think this might be worth, if anything.

It is the original Donald Grant Publishing flyer announcing the original 1982 Gunslinger with order form. It is in perfect condition and flat rolled into a tube. So it's at least 27 years old. I completely forgot I had this item. Here are pictures of the front and back and closeups of the Gunslinger description as well as the order form...$20 for the trade and $60 for the deluxe! Enjoy!

Did anyone here pay $60 back in '82? :)

Not me. I did buy a new shrinkwrapped trade edition at a comic shop in Seattle for $20 in 1982. I also remember seeing an S/L offered for $250 in the Comic Buyer's Guide at about that same time but I didn't know anything about limited editions then and thought that the edition I had just bought for $20 was real expensive.

I never thought so, but I could be wrong. I've got a few that I have accumulated over the years. They used to be included free as filler material when you ordered one of the portfolios from Grant. Who knows, there may be a large stack of them in the barn sitting on top of the DT2 proofs!!

Eric, that's a beautiful book as all BLP's lettereds seem to be. And Dave, I really like the presentation there with the prelim sketches framed with the painting. Congratulations to you both.

It's possible I'm mistaken, but I want to say about a year or so ago I saw one of the Grant flyers advertising DTII or III sell for fifty or sixty once on ebay. I was going to bid when it was lower, but... If I'm right I guess that doesn't really indicate value. I mean someone might have just wanted it badly.

A few King items recently:

I finally got the LSoE S/L and Artists Edition – no sketches or doodle, though :( But I’m still pretty darn happy to have a new signed edition of a King Dark Tower book!

And one that I neglected to mention that I won from the Haven Foundation auctions a few weeks back, which was one of the Geyer Green Mile electric chair prints. Which I really liked the print, and it’s a nice size too.

So I’m happy with my new King items!

First off, Huge thanks to David for helping me get this done. The proof is my first so I am thrilled about it as well. I have a question though. When I got the LSoE back and was checking out the inscription, I noticed the skull. I am almost certain that it was there when I sent the book off so I was wondering everyone who did not get a remarque have the skull beside Michael's name? Maybe David will come in and say I am nuts and that he drew that along with the Ka/eye. I was just so proud of the book when I first got it that I did not open it enough to really see what was there. :wtf:

OMG. So unless David comes and tell me I am insane, then the skull was already unique to the book. Do not get me wrong. I still would have sent it to Michael for the inscription.

I forgot that I included On Writing in the first pic. It is nothing special but it is a first/first which the seller at ebay did not mention. So I am glad of that. Now it is just a matter of time till my S/L of Insomnia arrives and I will have my first King sig this go around.

OMG. So unless David comes and tell me I am insane, then the skull was already unique to the book. Do not get me wrong. I still would have sent it to Michael for the inscription.

According to what I have seen and read, the skull was probably put in the book when Michael originally signed it, before it was sold to you.

Very unique and cool.

sleeplessdwarf
04-02-2009, 04:01 PM
Agreed Matt. Here is a pic a bit closer. When you look at the page in person his sig and the skull look to be from the same pen. The inscription is a bit lighter. If David comes and says he seen Michael do it at dinner then I am way wrong, but at this moment I am 90% sure that I seen the skull the day it first came. I just thought it was part of the original print on the page.

So here's another remarque! :)
Congratulations!!!

sleeplessdwarf
04-02-2009, 05:40 PM
It is still open for debate. I am very certain that the skull was there when I received it from grant. I did think it was just part of the print. David has said to me in PM that it was done as a favor and since he was there I can not argue that. Looking at the ink on the page the skull does fit with the original sig. Just in case David is not really sure if it was done at dinner or not, I have messaged the Whelan's to inquire. This has absolutely nothing to do with increasing the value of the book(I will not sale) but it does lend to the discussion of the limited amount of remarques. I know a few others have mentioned that there were small doodles. I just want to list this numbered book as one that came with a doodle if that is in fact the case. Hopefully I hear from David or Michael soon.

No matter what, this is my pride and joy atm. Please check the collecting questions thread if you have an answer about my new proof. Thanks.

tippy4
04-02-2009, 06:03 PM
I have a hard time beleiveing Michael would consider that skull a remarque.

Don't get me wrong...it is nice...but I call that a doodle.

I might even go so far as to call it a sketchy-doodle (god I hate that phrase).

Remarque though?....nah.

sleeplessdwarf
04-02-2009, 06:08 PM
I do remember a few others reporting that they had small doodles when they received their copy(the eye) or such. I do not care if it is a remarque or not. The thing here is what did he consider a doodle when he did the sig. If the skull was part of the original sig, then it has to be included in the ones he said he did. I am not so sure his definition of sketchy doodle is much different than ours.

Absolutely none. To be honest it is more of a personal thing. My mind swears to me that the skull was there from the beginning. So that part of my brain is telling me I am a dumb ass for thinking it was part of the print on the page and that all copies had it. The other side is telling me that David knows exactly what he is talking about and that it was done as a little extra for me since I only asked for the Ka/eye. Please do not get me wrong on this one. I am thrilled either way. If you could only see how I handle the book when the wife asked to see it, you would know. :P I guess it is part of my ocd behavior rearing it head.

Matt
04-03-2009, 07:57 AM
I think you may be confused about what David said.

I am 99.9% sure that your little skull was added when Michael originally signed it. He did that on a few of them with a Ka symbol. You are one of the lucky few that not only got a sketchy doodle (on the book when you bought it) but also a personal remarque courtesy of David and Michael.

You may have felt like a dumbass for thinking it was a part of the page but it wasn't. Just lucky happenstance.

Ok, just to make this clear...Michael did the skull, the ka symbol, the eye and the inscription on Saturday night after dinner when we were sitting there talking, in front of my own eyes. He did the same with Karen's book. We watched him sketch it out. When you got the book, there was nothing except Michael's signature and the number on the book. Everything else was added last Saturday night.

Matt
04-03-2009, 02:11 PM

Thanks for clearing it up. As stated, it was just as nice either way. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you for delivering the book, and to Michael for making it even more awesome.

Matt, you made an educated guess and can't fault your logic there. I just hope I do not find anything confusing when my latest purchase arrives. Damn the doctors and switching my meds. It does make my brain feel like scrambled eggs for the first week.

Hey all, since you mentioned craigslist I thought I would let you all in on what I have been doing, even though it could pose some competition in the future...lol

I have been buying Stephen King books on craigslist for years. 99% of the time people selling their SK books on craigslist may not know what they have or what its worth.

If you put the right words in the Google search field such as " Stephen King books craigslist " or " Stephen King Collection craigslist " or " Stephen King signed craigslist " it will bring up a huge list of craigslist ads all over the country...not just local to you.

Most people, in my experience around 90% of people are perfectly willing to mail out books to you and of those people most also have paypal. I have been doing this for years and probably have at least 40 transactions through craigslist. I have only been screwed once...but that was partly my own stupidity that that happened to me.

Some of my recent purchases are:

1. Grant 1st Wizard and Glass still in shrink wrap for $50.00
2. Talisman/Black House numbered gift set still in shrink wrap, From A Buick 8 Gift Edition still in shrink wrap and all three different hardcover Colorado Kid's still in original package from PS Publishing...All these for 215.00 shipped !!
3. A complete set of Dark Tower hardcover books, the first four were Viking first edition, first prints and the last three were first editions...all in near fine or better condition for 65.00 plus shipping.

And my most recent one... An inscribed signed and dated first edition of The Dead Zone signed in 1980 and a first edition first printing HC Bachman Books for a total of 110.00

So there are some great deals out there on craigslist !!!

I've been cruising Craigslist for a while.

Just an FYI about Craigslist:

The sellers that are being run off of Ebay for shady signatures and deals, have started posting the same books on Craigslist. Always, ALWAYS ask for a picture before buying a signed book.

Looking into my crystal ball, it's a bit cloudy but I see a new thread being created called

I would never ever buy a signed book without pictures...and after I get the pictures of the signed page... I send them to Hutch to verify the signature and he is always very kind and helpful with his reply. If Hutch doesn't like the signature... I don't buy it. Simple as that. But I can see how people would try Craigslist in hopes of snagging a sucker that they can't get on Ebay !!!

I just got two more proofs. I've added them to my Collections thread. I've got two more on order. After they arrive, I'll be adding them also.

The two I got are proofs of McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thriiling Tales with The Tale of Grey Dick and Nebula Awards 28 with King's essay on the passing of Fritz Leiber, A World Without Fritz.

Earlier today, I opened my garage door to find a package from Cemetary Dance!!

Opened it up and voila!! my book has arrived!!! Stephen King: The Non-Fiction, and it is GORGEOUS. A few years late but it's beautiful.

the actual book or an arc?
The actual book man. The real deal. Yeah, it's got a no frills slipcase that really is disappointing considering what I paid for the book, but after looking at the other slipcased books from CD (except Secretary of Dreams) I shouldn't have been surprised as they (only two that I own) have plain slipcases too. I think would have chosen another color besides red though.

Now I just have to find a copy of Wood's Uncollected, Unpublished for a decent price.

I'll have to do the picture thing later, this weekend probably. But I will post some.

Got my Non-Ficiton book today - check one off from CD Pubs; three to go! :-)

Not thrilled with the Red slip case either, but the book itself is great! Big too! About 1/8inch taller than LSOE and about 1/3 wider!

Sam, I have not looked through the book other than what I took the pics of. What did he mess up on?

The text that was used was from an earlier version and had typos and grammatical errors from my understanding. I don't know who was responsible for that mix-up, but Ziesing took the heat for it. He made some really nice books. I have several that he published and all of them are well made and beautiful.

I followed up with Camelot and just received the following reply:

Hi ----:

I just discovered a problem - your name was not put into the book as an
"extra" and I have been in touch with Subterranean Press and they said to
comp you the book with their profuse apologies. So let me know if you want
me to refund to your card the $75.00 that you pre-paid or leave it as Store
Credit and we'll take care of the shipping charge.

I'm very sorry about this

Yes, it is very nice. I don't think I've ever seen him use the little stylized "MW" to sign a small sketch like that. He usually reserves that form of signature for his larger paintings. Part of the fun of the larger paintings is finding the little "MW." He can be pretty creative in hiding it sometimes.
