I posted a similar picture the other day in the Rachel Readman thread, but this one is subtly different...

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9466/dtshelf.jpg

... because my "Waste Lands" is signed by Ned Dameron and features a nice little sketchy doodle of a Rose:

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/8676/001psu.jpg

Given that my main collections are as follows:

Artist-signed Dark Tower books,
Donald M. Grant books illustrated and signed by Ned Dameron, and
Books by Lawrence Block

This seemed like a good chance to satisfy two of my needs. I'm only missing W&G right now, and my Gunslinger is a 2nd; it'll probably stay that way for a while (or ever), but that's okay with me.

Tim Powers - Hide Me Among the Graves - Proof
Arthur C. Clarke - Rama Revealed - Proof
Fantasy Annual 3 - anthology featuring the first book appearance of The Crate by King.

Total cost $8 and some shitty Danielle Steel paperback for trade in.

Finally got a nice copy of the large print Hope Springs Eternal; Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redmption after looking for a looooong time. This one is ex-libris, but the great thing about it is it appears to have never been read. The covers don't have a scratch on them, the binding is tight (doesn't look like it was ever opened), every page is white and new, even the little library card holder inside the back cover looks like it was just glued in there today. Perhaps the good folks at Wake Forest aren't Stephen King fans? (Or they can't read? Heh heh). If it weren't for the "King Large Print" sticker on the spine (instead of the usual library sticker), card holder, and the stamps, I'd have me a pristine copy. I'm very happy!

Happy to get this in ... ARC for Shadow Show with a signed Bradbury bookplate. Bought it direct from Gauntlet as well, so no doubts on the signature. That's really cool, because when I get that special S/L in with all of the author's signatures, the one signature missing in there is Bradbury's ... so this will make a great pair on the shelf!

Also, don't know if we have any military art lovers here, but this is my real new pride and joy. It's an Artist Proof of "Hang Tough - Bastogne 1944" by John D. Shaw, with the signatures of 16 Battle of the Bulge veterans. I don't have mine framed yet, but the one pictured here is from the Valor Studios website, it's an 8 signature Victory Edition. I've been trying for five years to find a copy (any copy, not just an Artist Proof), ever since I went to Bastogne and did the Memorial Perimeter Walk back in 2008 and got a real feel for what it was like for these guys. I've got some relics that I'm going to be adding to the print matting (actual shrapnel picked out of the ground in Bastogne, period paratrooper jump wings, period 101st Airborne patch), should be dynamite when it's done. If 'you're a WWII art and signature fan, check out Valor Studios, they have great stuff.

I love the artwork, especially 506th PIR stuff (the guys that Band of Brothers is based on). Here's a couple of the others that I own, all signed by WWII vets:

In the Company of Heroes, Artist Proof, 12 signatures : Some of the 506th PIR Bastogne vets visiting their buddies buried at the American Military Cemetary in Luxembourg. This is also where General Patton is buried; I went here in 2009, saluted Patton's grave marker.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/in-the-company-of-heroes.jpg

Into the Night, Publisher's Proof, 16 signatures, with piece of D-Day parachute : C-47's drop members of the 101st and 82nd Airborne on D-Day over St Mere Eglise, Normandy.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/C-47-on-DDay.jpg

Victory Salute, Artist Edition, 16 signatures: 506th PIR members salute P-51s of the 325th Fighter Group on the road to Berchtesgaden.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/easy-company-in-berchtesgad.jpg

If anybody else collects, I'm looking for one called Silencing the Guns by Jim Dietz, edition of 1000, signed by Dick Winters, depicting the 506th attack on fixed gun positions at Brecourt Manor (which you'll know if you've seen Band of Brothers). Here's what it looks like; if by some chance you ever come across one, please let me know ASAP!

Edit- I know about the $3K one on eBay, it's priced $1500-$2000 too high ... trying to cash in on Dick Winters passing last year. Shannon also let me know about the new one at Aces High; fingers crossed but not too hopeful there, especially with the exhange rate.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Dick-Winters-at-Brecourt-Ma.jpg

Can't say enough about the folks at Valor Studios; great items at great prices (if you're lucky enough to get it from them rather than the secondary market).

Nothing scarier than how awesome SK thought he looked in 1993.

The newest resident at MZ's home for unwanted collectibles, a somewhat dinged S/L of "Locke and Key 2: Head Games". Due to it's dented nature, I paid less than what the trade edition still costs on the Sub Press page (but I'm much less picky than most). Here it is with its trade brother:

#238/250 isn't bad, but I couldn't imagine paying $250 for it, given that it's pretty much just the trade edition with a signature page, color end papers, dust jacket, and slip case (I imagine that this is at least partly why for Locke and Key 3 there is no trade edition).

Seconding that recommendation. I have the five available IDW trades all signed and doodled by Joe. L&K is hands down the best that comic-dom has to offer.

Just out of curiousity, why is that?

Well, obviously it's a personal opinion, one that I should caveat with the note that I didn't grow up reading comics. I do read rather extensively now, and in my mind the L&K series is definitely the best out there. First, for me, being a huge fan of art in books and whatnot, is Gabriel Rodriguez's contribution. I have yet to find a comic book artist that puts as much detail and emotion into every single panel. There's a good reason why he is credited as a co-creator to the series and not just an artist. The books would not be the same without him. Second, well, it's scripted by Joe! His novels are okay in my mind, but I am enthralled with his short fiction and novellas, and L&K (in my opinion anyway) reads a lot like some of those works. Excellent story telling, unique ideas, fantastic world-building, etc... I really feel a connection to his characters.

So there's my quick answer. Just my opinion, of course. Anyone is free to disagree.

Robert Fulman
08-29-2012, 11:41 AM
I'll second all that. The stories premise is simple: there's a house full of keys, and the keys do crazy things. But as the story goes on, it becomes apparent that quite a bit of forethought went into the story. Things are being tied up quite nicely with the fifth volume, and I can't wait for the sixth.

I don't read a lot of comic books; the Dark Tower series is pretty much the only other series I read. The difference is remarkable. I think the artwork is much cleaner and contributes much more to the story. The story itself is much deeper and more detailed. I might be wrong, but I think anyone who reads the DT comics without reading the books might find it difficult to know what's going on. With L&K, I feel like I am getting a full novel worth of info in every volume.

Ari_Racing
08-29-2012, 01:13 PM
I read Joe Hill's Locke and Key not so long ago and I found that Joe it might not be at the same level as his father when it comes to novels, but he's surely a very talented writer when it comes to comic books, especially at this point in history where so many new artists and writers appear every year. Locke and Key is original, catchy, has great artwork...it's one of the best comics I've ever read.

Fair enough. Maybe I'll go and pick it up. Recommendations?

Are there Graphic novels by now?

Im never sure where to post this type of thing 'cause its not a new acquisition just something interesting to share.
I picked up these two at a local bookstore. The owner told me he got them from a production crew member of Maximum Overdrive. Those who have seen the movie may remember the scene in the restaurant when the electric knife attacks the waitress. If you note the date of the first inscription (July 10 1985) its 21 days before a major accident that happened on the set. Just a bit of useless trivia I thot interesting.

From Wki Maximum Overdrive
“Accidents on set
When filming the scene where the ice cream truck flips over, the stunt did not go according to plan and almost resulted in an accident. A telephone pole-size beam of wood was placed inside so it would flip end over end, but it only flipped once and slid on its roof, right into the camera. Gene Poole, dolly grip on the film, pulled the cameraman out of the way at the last second.
A second incident, this time leading to serious injury, occurred on July 31, 1985 while filming in a suburb of Wilmington, North Carolina. A radio-controlled lawnmower used in a scene went out of control and struck a block of wood used as a camera support, shooting out wood splinters which injured the director of photography, Armando Nannuzzi. As a result of this incident, Nannuzzi lost an eye. Nannuzzi sued Stephen King on February 18, 1987 for $18 million in damages due to unsafe working practices. The suit was settled out of court.”

how did you get the remarque in your lettered pre publication delivery? thanks

Simon - I wrote to Jill Bauman right after I ordered the book (back at the beginning of 2011 wasn't it?) to see if she was able to do the remarque, which she thankfully said "No problem!" to. Asked her if it was okay to have CD deliver directly to her (rather than me just have to turn around and forward it to her), then coordinated with Mindy at CD to send change the delivery address to Jill after publication. It really made sense too, because at the time I ordered it I was still at my APO in Germany .... why send it on a weeks-long trip through USPS just for me to turn around and send it back? It was all pretty easy, the hardest part was the wait for the traycases!

I'm a little irritated they didn't get the hyphen between "would-be shooter." It is a book that's supposedly using proper language, after all...

(if you're wondering why it matters, read the sentence minus the hyphen and it doesn't make sense. It's actually phrased as a question without the question mark, among other problems)

Very cool item and congrats on tracking one down. I'm curious what type of collectible this would be considered? Is it a prototype/slash unpublished, unauthorized/unpublished, or something else? Just wondering.

Bob - you said before you're not a fan of aftermarket traycases, etc.

So how is that not an "aftermarket" book in your eyes? How is it a legit collectible?

(serious question)

I think its uniqueness overrides any personal preference. I'm not answering for Bob, but if I had the money and a lead on one, I'd get one too.

That's a superb looking book.

My personal ambivalence towards aftermarket slipcases is that it seems like we are being asked to spend upwards of $50 to $60 to "protect" a book that we bought at Sam's or Costco for $12. I just don't see the need to do that but that is just my opinion and others (obviously) don't feel that way. I broke my own rule recently and ordered a traycase from CD to protect the S/L 11/22/63. It had an oddly shaped dj that didn't lend itself readily to the Demco cover. But I had to send the traycase back because the lettering was all askew. I hope the one I am getting from Thomas The Collector will be an improvement. Mostly though I think all these outfits that rush to put out the traycases are just preying on us collectors. These books really don't need any extra protection. Heck, we handle them so carefully anyway.

I acquired this new book simply because it appealed to me. Is it "official"? No. And it would be much, much better if it were signed by King. But, alas, that likely will never happen. The other thing that made it desirable to me is that it uses the original uncut manuscript and is likely the only time that will be done.

The bottom line (answered with tongue-in-cheek) is not everything I do makes perfect sense or is explainable rationally. (Just ask my wife.) It is a bitchin' cool book and I really wanted it.

Robert Fulman
09-04-2012, 02:01 PM
Unless I'm missing something, isn't it a bootleg of the original manuscript, though? Using that standard, anyone could publish another edition of it at any time, and if they felt like it they could make it even nicer.

Bingo.

The only reason I would be looking to buy a case for a trade edition would be if it was signed or remaqued, and even then I don't always go for a slipcase. I have a nice bookcase. Why do I need to put a book in a case that I put inside of another case? Pretty soon there'll be cases for your cases. Hmm...sounds Seussian.

I have to agree about the slipcases.
I personally see no point in having them for any of the newly published books (although that 11/22/63 traycase is pretty cool).
The old, higher value first editions like The Shining makes a bit more sense. In that case I can understand wanting one.

I do have several of Tomas' DT slipcases to house various editions outside of the Grant slipcases. They work great for the artist editions or signed/remarqued trade HCs.

I am pretty sure that Stu Tinker from Betts provided that trey case. I bought Six Stories when it first came out for $85 and then paid Stu $50 for the case at a SKEMERCon held in Bangor. Being a paperback, this is one book that definitely warranted an after market case!

When friends who might be casual readers of King see my Six Stories with big gold letters on the front, on my Living Room Book Shelf they get giddy thinking they have a new King book to go out and purchase! Then I break the news to them; but do tell them where they can read the six storeis inside Six Stories! :-)

I've been thinking about that. I'm not really sure. Of course, I'd like a copy of The Stand, but I am having a real had time wrapping my head around the idea of spending more than $1000 for one book. Eric, what color/number did you get?

I still haven't picked up a Regulator S/L yet, want to get an Insomnia as well. Not many mental hurdles, financial ones depend on the month. I just dropped $125 on a signed Chuck Yeager print and $40 on a signed Bud Anderson one, and am trying to put some $$$ aside for some anticipated December purchases ... but yeah, for $1000 on a book seems like a lot, while at the same time I've spent more on a single piece of paper!

Eric, if all you need to complete your first edition collection is a Carrie and a Night Shift, I would 100% go for those. Without a doubt.

Roog, love the Asian books. Love em love em love em. :)

I didn't even know The Midnight Disease had anything from King in it...perhaps I should have finished reading it back in the day haha. One of these days I'll have the money to actually go on Ebay etc and get some nice books, but until it's only a matter of finding decent editions for cheap.

What is better than getting a copy prior to publication? Getting a proof?
Better than getting a proof? Getting a signed proof... directly from the author.
What is better than this? Recieving (from the publisher) another proof.

Prior to publication :
- copy, signed (personnalised with doodle)
- proof, signed (personnalised with doodle)
- proof, unsigned

Not bad he? :-)

What book?

http://www.cultura.com/ressources/products/1/4/1/7/3/9/1374945.jpg

Bernard Werber's "Troisieme Humanité" (literally : "Third humanity").

The pitch is :
"We are at the era of the second humanity.
There was one before.
There will be one... after."

I dont really know how to explain Werber books... but they are a mix of science, religion, history/mythology (therefore quite 'cultural') sociology, philosophy, mistery.
It's a shame that only his first book was translated into english ("Empire of the ants"), while his books are translated in over 30 languages and are popular in France, as well as EXTREMELY popular in Russia & Korea.

One thing i love about his signature... is that he ALWAYS draw a doodle with them. And i have PLENTY of them! :-)

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/BW/3e-2.JPGhttp://club-stephenking.fr/img/BW/3e-1.JPG

(I told him that i was wondering what doodle he was gonna do... he replied that he didnt prepare anything so far... hence the : "Oh shit. Another fish!" & "It's me, again".)
During our meeting the other day, we spoke about this book that i started reading at 3am : a bad idea as i didnt want to stop reading it... but... have to go to work, as well as Stephen King's FULL DARK NO STARS :-)
