Small ray of sunshine today. Framed called and said this was ready. Love ya Ralph for hooking me up with this. So simple and commanding at the same time. I call it Roland ‘09. The coolest part? Michael did it on the back of a Little Sisters manuscript. I was just told the coolest story too about how it came to be. You cannot see it in the picture but the top part shows the Sisters (it was the title page)! Just a cool little piece and I’m honoured to own it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180504/220a3889db6375efe137fa6c298dd09f.jpg

But of course... Normal is boring. 8) It kinda helped to justify doing so because the Crimson King layout is slightly larger.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Regarding the gloves, about a year or so ago, I bought some books from David and while taking pictures to post to this thread I noticed some fingerprints on one of the books. (I think it was CP Salem's Lot gift edition). I was about 90% sure they came from me, and I was a little embarrassed to take the photos. Since that time I decided I would wear gloves when handling my books. I even where them when reading any hardback books.

As it turned out Yegor also wore gloves in the photos he sent me before I committed to buy the IT lettered. I am sometimes surprised when I see pictures of high value books taken without gloves.

Can fingerprints cause damage? Coincidentally I was just wondering this a few hours ago when wrapping a dust jacket in Mylar. I’m sure I planted some fingerprints on the DJ while doing it, and I wondered if over time the oil might cause a defect, however minor it may be.

Over the very long term, the accumulation of the acids present in fingerprints can cause things like yellowing and brittleness. Realistically, if you're only handling a book once to put a mylar cover on it, you'll never see these effects in your lifetime. But some people prefer to be safe rather than sorry.

However, there are some types of dustjackets (generally matte jackets) and cloth bindings (some silks) that can pick up fingerprints and, especially with the addition of a mylar cover, sometimes these can stand out. The vast majority of times they can be removed (I've printed up many a matte Sub Press jacket and removed the prints with a soft cloth), but again, some people prefer to be extra safe.

EDIT: The downside of using gloves is that you aren't as tactilely sensitive and may be more likely to accidentally damage a book in a different way - by dropping it or not turning a page carefully enough (especially the glassine pages that sometimes protect art pages).

Father Cody
05-23-2018, 07:57 PM
Very interesting, thanks. The jacket I mentioned is in fact a Sub Press with a matte finish so I’ll have to take a good look in the daylight tomorrow. Oh what the hell, might as well just get some cheap cotton gloves. I can already hear my wife laughing at me now.

I'd thought they might have been a thematic touch, given you were handling It (I'm not certain Pennywise wears white gloves, but I picture him that way, and this was a bit like he was presenting the book).

When my wife surprised me with a meet and greet at the Whelans home in the US.... it was one of the best moments of my life. While there, Michael was painting this. The colours, the quote, the “dinosaur”, the piece period... I fell in love with. PLUS... It was a work in progress and he shared his insights on it. I had to have it. Alas, he forgot how much I wanted it (I expressed it but not over the top) and he sold it for his Kickstarter for $5500. Fast forward and here comes one of my closest buddies with a deal. Thanks Tim for helping me bring this one home.

If you are only interested in learning about BONE OF CONTENTION, the dialogue starts at the 4:30 mark. That being said, I'd recommend taking the 10 minutes to enjoy the entire clip.

This piece, along with several other palette gremlins, was featured at the Opening Exhibition of BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION a couple of years back. Several TDT Members were there and credit to wolfher for his video prowess to capture the highlights.

RF, feel free to provide additional candor as well based on your discussion with Bob from Baby Tattooville.

Enjoy and congratulations Kris. It aligns well with your collection focus.

Youth is Wasted on the Young....

Rather than listen to me, I'll defer to Mr. Whelan to give you his unscripted perspective on the piece.

If you are only interested in learning about BONE OF CONTENTION, the dialogue starts at the 4:30 mark. That being said, I'd recommend taking the 10 minutes to enjoy the entire clip.

I'll have to check the facts, but IIRC, Bob Self from Baby Tattooville conducted an "event weekend" ~2008 at the Mission Inn in Riverside, California. Michael Whelan, other artists and a select few "collectors" attended.

http://www.michaelwhelan.com/baby-tattooville-2008/

That was where Whelan either started, or the seed was planted for the piece.

The plan was to save some money for non-book purchases. Until I came across a great deal that I couldn’t pass up. So, I’m very happy to add Cujo to the shelves.

Every once in awhile I am humbled and frankly.... speechless. Not often. BUT today is one of those days. Way back I was 'helpin' (if you can call it that) Paul a bit on the Dragon stuff... mostly his sound board to bounce ideas off, and IT came to be. I asked (begged) Paul to buy the prototype. He agreed. He made one prototype copy for experimentation before rebinding all the books. I waited for a long time. Until today.... I JUST opened this book that another 25 people are anxiously awaiting. I am speechless. I am blown away. This is in what I call "Regulators Lettered territory". Period. Now, FULL DISCLOSURE: I was thinking of selling this and told Paul so:( Only cause I have an actual letter (X) coming. The reason: was to bid on another rare IT item that is coming up for auction. I can tell you this all... I WILL NO LONGER BE SELLING THIS. So don't ask. lol Paul Suntup is a collector first and foremost... and then a publisher. Opening this breathtaking item proves that and anyone of you getting his stuff now or in the future... all I can say... is this is a VERY exciting time to be a collector of rare books. VERY exciting. Now excuse me while I pour myself a cold one and with a massive smile on my face, behold this treasure. Cheers all

HUGE congrats on this!!!!

I think it's very cool to have the prototype as well as the finished product - I don't consider them to be the same "edition", because there are generally differences between the prototype and the final product (the color of the balloon, in this case, judging from the letter), which makes it very difficult to be a completist sometimes...

Sweet! Are those newly discovered or some that were sold from a collector to another?
There is one on abebooks just now, for $48K

So those are real? Like for real for real? If so that is very cool. So they are out there, just floating around. Lucky for those who have them or have the ability to get them.
I would just settle for a second state book at this point.

I haven't posted a P&J before because, while I've been fortunate to snag some amazing books since I joined the site, I keep telling myself that I am going to start a collection thread and put everything in there. But I love reading this thread and sharing in people's joy for their new books! And since I still haven't put together a collection thread (yet), I wanted to share this new acquisition, because it has been literally more than a year in the making - it first came to my attention last summer and arrived only a few weeks ago.

I present: a frankendeluxe Centipede Press Salem's Lot.

Like most people here, I am in awe and envy of the Roman Numeral Salem's Lot, and also like most people here, I will probably never be able to own one. Not only are they among the most expensive King-related items, but I believe that most of them are in the hands of collectors who truly love and appreciate them, and are unlikely to let them go. So when the opportunity arose last summer for me to acquire something very similar, I jumped on it.

I know that this book has several different states, and I don't consider this an alternative state. I consider this more akin to the version that Betts did back in the day - a custom binding of an unbound book block - with the difference being that this was overseen by Jerad at Centipede Press and uses materials that are the same or similar to the materials used in the actual deluxe state.

Here is a shot of the traycase. You can't tell very well in the photo but the graphic on the side is an embedded acrylic plate:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6334.JPG

Back view of the traycase and the red silk:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6333.JPG

Front of the book and the folder with the Uelsmann prints:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6338_1_.jpg

Closer shot of the front of the book. It's bound in black goatskin and also has an embedded acrylic plate on the front board:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6340_1_.jpg

Side view of the front board and spine. There's also a dark red topstain that you can't see:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6339.jpg

Endpapers. Should they be marbled, or have an Uelsmann print? How about both!

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_6341.jpg

Lastly, this book does not have a limitation page because it is not a true S/L. But it does have a signature :)

I had just recently asked a few collectors what the big deal is with this book and how it could possibly be comparable to The Stand coffin edition. Generally speaking the answers were that I’ll just have to see it in person, but it’s special and deserving of such high praise. I have to say, after seeing these pictures you’ve taken, I think I get it now.

I'm glad that the pictures do it some justice. I'm sure that some other posters here could take photographs that do an even better job (I'm looking at you, Yigor)!

There are definitely some aspects that are harder to appreciate without seeing it in person. It's a big book, with heavy paper, so it's really a massive tome. Also, the goatskin feels amazing - it's actually soft! When compared to the standard leather-bound (or, god forbid, bonded leather) book, it really stands out.

Below are a few more pictures.

Very true and that’s a great point. I couldn’t agree more, really. I guess what makes me worry is the possibility that one day I’ll need to sell some of my collection to pay for an emergency, for example. The value from Fine to Near Fine seems to be a huge difference in many cases. It does seem ridiculous sometimes that I have these amazingly produced books that I’m missing out on 90% of the experience by only ever really seeing the spine or the case it’s in. What I do now is look through the special books while I read a reading copy. That way I at least get to see the art and finish reading the book with the last few pages of the special edition.

To each their own. I have read my Centipede 'Salem's Lot once a year since publication and the pleasure I have derived from each of those readings along with the anticipation as the next year's re-reading date approaches is priceless. The fact that SL is my all-time favorite book plays a huge role in the overall experience but if I had the coffin limited of The Stand or was getting the Suntup limited or deluxe Misery I would do the same.
Go ahead and pull your favorite one off the shelf and give it a spin!

I bugged the shit out of Paul Suntup. I sincerely did.. still do even. I am surprised he even still talks to me at times! When he put out the rebound Eyes of the Dragon I was blown away. I begged and pleaded for him to do more... as others did. He relented. Firestarter was announced and floored the King community. I told Paul I really wanted him to do IT. IT is my favorite book and I knew he would give it the treatment it needed. As it turned out, there was already something brewing on that front. I was friendly with the artist (Bob Gusiti) of the original book and had did some business with him in the past. I told Paul I could help and get him on board. Paul was hesitant.. but I kept 'bugging'. I had my case maker at the time mock up the case and of course Paul took it to a WHOLE other level. He says to me... he wants to make them out of cast iron. I thought it was one of the best ideas ever. You have all seen that is a fact. Paul Suntup is a master at his craft and will be to his days end. This little story is to share why my copy is different from the other 26 produced. Bob Gusiti does not do remarques. When we were discussing the book and and what Paul was trying to do vision wise we talked about them. He was not having it so I left it. I have great respect for Bob, so him agreeing to sign signature sheets was amazing in itself. When I got them, he ended up doing a remarque for me. You see it in the other ones above all the signatures, but mine is double signed as Paul needed to letter it and do the Balloon information on how it was made. He had done the little remarque above his signature on a sheet. I am HONORED to have it. I will cherish this forever.
PS: I ALMOST forgot... another chap I know decided to throw an extra signature in there too:)

The remarque is the balloon drawing above his name in the picture. Paul used it in everyones above the multiple signatures. SO I have it twice as mine had to be signed twice as Bob did the drawing over his signed name. It was a touching surprise!!!

OK. That is major coolness. Plus having King's name is also very nice. I really don't know what else to say.

...I begged and pleaded for him to do more...He relented...

...I told Paul I really wanted him to do IT...I was friendly with the artist (Bob Giusti) of the original book and had did some business with him in the past. I told Paul I could help and get him on board. Paul was hesitant.. but I kept 'bugging'...

So basically, if the rest of us want Paul to tackle a particular book, we just need to get you on board first. Got it!

Tales From The Nightside by Charles L. Grant. US 1st published by Arkham House, in flawless, unread condition. Although there are surely others, it's the only copy I've seen that is signed both by Grant and King, at his introduction.
