You just have to sell it to the DMV, not me. I've always thought your screen name was "sexually, double entendre" intended.

You could always go with "MY OHM"

The DMV really has no sense of humor or sense of pop culture. There was a guy in our county here that used to have REDRUM for his tag for years. About 5 years ago or so, he wasn't allowed to renew it anymore. It not longer met the board's approval

It's not actually for the DMV, all Tesla software has a place to name the car which then is shared through the app and Tesla service, etc.

I haven't posted any new items in a long time, though I've acquired quite a few.... but can't help myself on this one.
Recently purchased this from an awesome guy.

It is an original 46 page manuscript from King to the publisher for the King short story "Lunch at Gotham Cafe". ...which was printed in the collection Dark Love.

I contact author and editor Nancy Collins via her official Facebook page and she verified it's the real deal.

"Lunch at the Gotham Café" is a horror short story by American writer Stephen King. It originally appeared in the 1995 anthology Dark Love (edited by Nancy A. Collins, Edward E. Kramer and Martin H. Greenberg). In 1997, it was published in the limited-edition collection Six Stories. In 2002, it was included in King's collection Everything's Eventual, with a scene from the story featured on the cover of the collection's first edition dust jacket.

Not a book, but book-adjacent...

This was my birthday gift from my wife:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_96831.jpg (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=25523&title=antique-book-press&cat=984)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_9685.jpg

It's an antique book press made by Bradley & Hubbard around the turn of the century. It's in great shape, especially the logo, which is really pretty!

I love and collect books, but as a non-collector (with the exception of her lovely Margaret Atwood collection) she finds it difficult to shop for books for me. I get it! She's made some good attempts in the past, but it's difficult to know what exactly I want at any given time without explicitly asking and kind of ruining the surprise.

Fortunately, I also like things that are book-related - cool bookmarks, unique bookends, and book presses. I think the various processes that go into book making are really interesting - the designs and bindings and endpapers and such - especially when they are being done by real masters of the craft. I love prototypes and extras and all sorts of stuff associated with the whole process (which I why I really appreciate Paul's updates and the windows he allows us to look through to see the journey the books take from idea to actuality).

I only have one book press so far, it's a wooden one that is really neat but that I actually got to help me with some minor book repair work in cases where the services of a book restorer would be more expensive than just getting a different copy of a book. I'm no professional, but I have enough tools and knowledge to make some fixes when appropriate.

Anyway, this is a big step up! It's in working condition but also serves as a really neat piece that I will use to display some book materials - likely an unbound page block or something similar. It's incredibly heavy - probably 50 pounds or so. My wife couldn't really wrap it, she had a hard enough time getting it from the car to the house, so I just couldn't go in the laundry room for a few days while it sat on the floor. She told my three-and-a-half year old about it, which is always a gamble when trying to keep a surprise. But she did a great job and it wasn't until I was opening the door to the room that she could no longer contain herself and yelled "IT'S A BOOK PRESSER FOR YOU!"

I'm very pleased, overall

Ari - I'd love to hear more about what it's like to get the proofs when you can share. Like for instance I believe that you got two proofs in this case, one substantially earlier than the other, and that you were prohibited from talking about. I'm just generally curious what it's like to be on the proof list for such a high profile author! This probably isn't the right thread for it but it's super interesting to me.

It's pretty easy: I've been in contact with publishers for 14 years already, and the fact that I manage all the SK social channels for Penguin Random House (Spain, all Spanish speaking countries and Spanish speakers in USA) plus being an author for Penguin made all the process smooth. 14 years ago I was knocking on doors and nowadays it's my bell the one that rangs. :)

I'm counting the days until I get the call from Warner about watching a certain movie. ;)

Very nice bookpress! :) Loved it!

Congrats, Kingfan for the Morrel book as well!

I'm counting the days until I get the call from Warner about watching a certain movie. ;)

Neat! Thanks for sharing

Idea: Would people like a thread that is for collectors to show off their pride and joy as opposed to dealers/sellers that post a beautiful book and post it for sell minutes later. I love seeing what collectors are adding to their collection as a true "pride and joy" and happy for them. But do not really get excited about books that are bought to be flipped for profit. By definition they are not really a new pride and joy.

I can tell this is directed at me. You might notice I don't post everything here I list. I am a book seller and, since it's a business, I look to make a profit off what I sell.

Also, and this is independent of that, I am a collector and enjoy quite a bit of what I buy. Posting in this list without a price would be the point of that.

So, if you're mad that someone would post here and then have it listed online then perhaps try to realize that things are more complicated than "flipping". Regarding this Misery I have it listed so high it would be almost impossible to sell. It is, however, good to have things like that to bring people to the store for marketing.

If people have a problem with someone being a bookseller and posting pictures of something they are still willing to sell I think this thread would be a lot more barren.

Maybe a thread called "Pictures of books that will never be for sale again" would be good for you.Nope. Was not directed at you.

I ordered two so may actually read one of them.

Also got the slipcase to go with it - nice little row of GO's on the shelf. Really like the Shannara's. I'm waiting on Magician and Lettered Red Queens War. Never seen one of their lettered before so looking forward to that.

The Faerie Tale book by Grim Oak press looks great. Thanks for sharing some pics.

I like what I have seen of their Shannara books (I have the first one). My only criticism is that I found the b/w interior art to be rather dark.

One thing I really like about their lettered editions is that they don’t have a dust jacket and thus not only show off the leather bound book but you don’t have to worry about a dust jacket getting damaged.

A few days ago I received the lettered edition of Infernal House's Darkness On the Edge of Town by Brian Keene. I love the book (especially the teeth image that surrounds each page of text) and the tray case is amazing. The book is slightly bigger, including the pages, than the limited edition version (see photo to the right of the A Field Guide To The Thirteen signature page photo); however the lettered edition's tray case is massive compared to the limited editions tray case (see photo at extreme bottom right).

Also included was A Field Guide To The Thirteen about the thirteen denizens from Brian Keene's Labyrinth mythology which Brian Keene made reference too in some of his other books. This is one of Brian Keene's rarest books as it was only issued with the lettered edition of Infernal House's Darkness On the Edge of Town where no other editions were done nor planned.

The 3 extreme bottom/middle photos are original artwork from the book that I purchased directly from the artist Alex Mcvey.

Thanks to webstar1000 for a very smooth transaction!

By the way, if anyone decides to part with the lettered edition of Infernal House's The Light is the Darkness by Laird Barron, I would love to hear from you.

One last thing. This is my first post where I attempted to include a photo which does not appear to be working for me so I have also include a link below it. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Amazing grab! The Infernal House lettered editions seem to be pretty spectacular across the board. Love the book - haven't seen anything like it - and the traycase is appropriately extravagant (and also smartly designed to keep those teeth from harming anything)!

Congrats - this this a really, really nice book.

I had a paperback of Feist's Faerie Tale loooooong ago; the cover with the monkey (I think it was a monkey) and the sneaker was just too intriguing to pass up. I don't remember much other than that I liked it, later lent it to my sister, and after a few years of it sitting at her place, she sold it at a yard sale because she'd forgotten it was mine...

I've also read Feist's Magician/Riftwar series, but didn't like that. Technically, it checked all the "fantasy" boxes, but it felt a bit too cookie cutter to me.

I think Stephen Kings political views rival it pretty well no?

If King thinks Trump’s an abortion of a human being then his politics are spot on IMO.

Of course people can have different views. For example, I believe we both have young daughters, but only one of us respects a man who treats women like shit. Huh?

...only one of us respects a man who treats women like shit. Huh?

Exactly - President Trump never hires women (don't bother fact-checking this; CNN and Snopes will vouch for me), and he only likes to sleep with them and is honest about that (heterosexuality now being considered conservative hate speech, I think, right?).

The issue isn't agreement or disagreement on religion or politics; the issue is, how much of a tool you are willing to make of yourself in the process of denigrating the bible or President Trump (for two examples)?

Oh look, it’s the other half of the double act. If you honestly think someone who hires women, or even enjoys sleeping with them, is then automatically exempt from misogyny, then you are a bigger tool than I’ll ever be. Don’t bother fact checking me on this - it’s common sense.

I’m moving on from this now as RF has requested.

Some refer to this as an ARC, but is doesn't say that on the book itself. I snagged it off ebay a while back for a damn good BIN price.

As I mentioned, there are none. It was/is unofficially considered one (not by myself), because of the fact that so few were sold/sent out, before the cover art was changed. All I know for sure is that for those looking for one, they are willing to pay a premium over the later Plume 1st/1st.

Hopefully someone will chime in with more info, and a valuation, but needless to say, the book I bought (NF+, never read) is likely worth more than the $20 I paid.

I was extremely nervous removing the glassine wrapper and putting it back on, but I absolutely had to look at the cover and back in person. It's just beautiful! The book is in amazing condition. The box looks great but has a couple of minor small indentations on the front, I can deal

Now, I'll take any and all advice on storing/displaying/caring for such an item.. for now I've put it back in its shipping box in a drawer. That's not where I want it to be!

You are best off having a plastic shop make one for you. Here is one of mine. Note: for the base where the book rests, I would recommend it be 4" deep, not the 3.25" pictured. You also need a piece of plastic (for the book, not the wood case) to support the page block and prevent sagging. Measure between the boards on your book for the correct size.

Here's a site where I've ordered many stands: https://www.displaystands4you.com/

I'm not sure if they make custom stands, but I've found that almost everything I want to display can be done with one of two styles, depending on the thickness of the page block:

cs12 Large Textbook Easel (books up to 2.6" thick) and cs5 Wide Book Holder w/o Lip (books up to 1.4" thick).

I've also had some worries about the 90-degree bend being slightly curved, and not perfectly straight, so to prevent spine cocking from the back board being ever-so-slightly-higher than the front board, I've affixed some felt pads to the area where the back of the book touches the stand. This keeps the bottom of the boards both touching the acrylic. (I admit, this may be a manufactured worry. I've also accepted the fact that my books bring me the most joy when I can see them regularly, and if displaying some of them causes minor issues over the long run, it's worth it to me. Obviously I still try very hard to stop any issues from occurring at all!)

One thing I have not tried, and should, is using a plastic block to hold the page block in place, as recommended by RF. Granted, I haven't tried displaying any Stand-sized books (anything thicker than ~2.5"), but I'm definitely going to look into this...

We've had discussions about this before. The problem being that there is no set size for a page block spacer. They must be custom made.

It's something that you can make for yourself if you own a decent saw/router and sander and are at all handy. They sell various thickness sheets at home stores. Just choose the right thickness and cut it to the right size. Polish the edge to avoid damaging your books.

Randall Flagg
08-26-2019, 02:41 PM
Wood is also an option, and usually available cheaper. As mentioned, as long as it's sized correctly, and is smooth on all edges and ends, you will be fine.

Wood is acidic. Be careful which species of wood you use. Maple or poplar are good choices. They are still mildly acidic though.

Correct. I cut a strip of Glassine archive paper the width and length of the bottom of the book. The Glassine creates a barrier between book and block.

I dont really know where to put this, so... here

I recieved yesterday my CREEPSHOW #0, the comic books inspired by the upcoming tv series, and a few things caught my eyes

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EC-JWGnXoAIO6cx.jpg

To me, this cover looks like "the survivor type", that was originally supposed to be part of the series
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EC-JV7YWsAAQuC2.jpg

and the other covers suggests that the next comics will adapt the tv series... so there should be one, at some point, adapting "Grey Matter"!

Finally, a 14 years old Stephen from Bangor Maine, wrote a letter to the editor.
I wonder if he really contributed it, or... not

I have a treated walnut stand for it, would you know whether that's OK, in terms of acidity? (I also have pieces of felt which the book rests on, rather than directly on the wood).

Thanks, I'm thinking about trying the biggest one they have (pictured with a phone book), maybe 2 of them connected, and if that's not good enough looking into a custom option. I really don't have much space to work with and I have to get a bookcase anyway.

I'm thinking the answer might be yes, but is it a stupid idea to display this book standing on its own upright?

peripheral do you have a picture of your stand for your Stand? :D

Randall Flagg
08-27-2019, 12:32 PM
Do not stand the book on its own. There is too much risk of the book falling over, let alone the constant pressure on the bottom of the boards. Same with the case. It can be stood upright, but there is a strong likelihood the lid will fall off.

What felt do you use? Strips of felt, or the sticky backed felt squares / circles?

Also, sorry for the dumb question, but what's a page block?

I tested standing it up and it was too scary... stays on but way too paranoid it would fall off on its own, onto my floor and crack.

For now, I have it in the box resting flat on my shelf on top of a cardboard tray that's wrapped in microfiber cloth. & another cloth I can drape around it. It'll do for now.

I agree with HBJ, this is definitely one of their best - congrats!!

And the pics don't do it justice. Not that your pics aren't good (we all know we're fighting for second after Yegor), but just that holding this one in your hands really helps. The leather is nice and soft, the cloth is smooth, the endpapers are thick from the paint (and an interesting design!).

Again - big congrats on this one - it's a fine, fine book!

It was one of the best buys of my life: a couple of months after the release, Sub Press had a 50% off sale on all in-print books and there was one copy left!

In honour of IT this coming week, I thought I’d share my IT collection. have every single thing in IT that’s book related (don’t care about silly movie promo stuff or Funko). The only thing I am missing is a fine signed 1st US. I have a fine UK which is a beauty but need that US. I’m pretty proud of it. I worked very hard and a LOT of hours to get those 25 1st’s. They are near fine or better. I bet you (RF knows) I have bought over 200 to get them. They would come in and many many times I would be disappointed. I ONLY have one flawless copy. Think of that... a pristine VERY FINE copy. I only ever got one. In all that searching. There was always a mark or blemish. This was like the day it was made. Anyways, thought I would share. If you have any questions feel free to ask:) cheers guys

PS: that is my little buddy: Indiana Jones. He is a Frenchie and his nick name is: Indy. I just love that little guy:)

I gotta ask: why do you need twenty-five copies of the same book? I understand seeking out the very best, most pristine one you can find, but why keep the rest?

(I mean no offence, of course, but this is a collector's quirk that many here seem to have, but I just don't get it.)

Did I just read that you bought 200 1st IT editions in order to get 25 fine books?
May I ask if you will "just" collect them as is, or plan on doing some rebound editions or something?

No, I just kept trying to get a good one. I look at the pics... buy it.. it comes.. and is crap. So I would re sell it, trash it or give it away. Over time I had amassed a few good ones. So kept after them. Just something fun to do. Looks cool. However the artwork's from IT shown (original) I find more interesting than the 25 IT's, HAHA

Wow Kris. You probably have one of the most complete IT collections out there. If I had more space, I know I would probably have dupes of a lot of books. But your collection is just stellar, even beyond the IT section.

Kris, your story with the disappointing first edition copies of It is similar to my own. I would buy one, get disappointed, and return it. Then the cycle repeated (just not every 27 years). I still don't have a truly fine copy. One day, when I am rich, I will have one, along with CD's limited edition and the art portfolio.
