Convention program book for the World Fantasy Convention, 1982.

Peter Straub was one of the Guests of Honor. King wrote a nice three page nonfiction piece titled "Peter Straub: An Informal Appreciation."

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/WFC82Program1.jpg

Apparently King attended the convention as this copy has a signed and dated inscription by King. I'm a sucker for signatures and inscriptions dated at the time of publication of a book or event. Theoretically you can always get something signed but signatures dated at the time of the event or publication are so very much rarer.

I thought my Don Robertson collection would be complete once I finally collected all the first editions, but I keep finding new things to add to it. On the right is a 2nd printing of his first novel, reprinted to coincide with the publication of his seventh and most famous novel, Paradise Falls. Never seen a copy before this one. On the left is a 1st edition of his third novel. I already have one copy of this.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3185/2902540733_748e51728f.jpg

But this one is signed and dated the year of publication. Not bad for less than $11 shipped. :)

i am collecting items of a french author that is not really known in britain/ USA while really famous in Russia & Korea : Bernard Werber.

Tonite i was at a book signing, and got a signed book to me... and there is better (see "other authors u collect" / "Collector's empirium" threads

I do own quite a few signatures of this author (including an ARC personalised to me), and he usually makes some nice drawin!

A few minutes ago I found a copy of Daphne Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn. It appears to be a first US edition (Doubleday) with a nearly flawless dustjacket (not a tear and clean crisp edges). The book does have some wear to it. Would it be worth restoring? Does anyone have any idea who I might talk to about it? ...or what something like that might be worth? I'm certain it's worth more than the .50 I paid for it. :D

As an aside to the brief discussion bout the DT4 booklet that came with the Desperation/Regulators set (see link for photo), does anyone own or know of signed copy? I have one and I'd like a measure of just how rare it is...

Hello matey

No, I'm talking about the real thing - I got it signed in London on the Bag of Bones tour.

Then Chris Cavalier bought it from me...

...and I bought it back when Chris sold his collection.

Now, as you probably know by now, I've got to sell again.

That got me wondering about how unique it really is...

I too will join the chorus of "I have never seen a signed one".

This strikes me as one of those items that could sell for $50 one week, and $300 the next week. I don't see it going higher than that, but you never know with ebay...if you get two people into a bidding war, the sky is the limit.

Good luck to you Ceri.

Yesterday I received a new bookcase that is replacing my old one. I´ll have to go and ask for another one just like this one to be made since it doesn´t have enough room for all my Stephen King books, but well...my books are protected against dust now and besides I have two shelves were I can put merchandising stuff :)

It´s made of carob wood.

Yes..I´m missing the From a Buick 8 Fuzzy Dice! :( I've been looking for that for some time and I watched the one Bev Vincent put at ebay.com, but it got too expensive for me.

The mini Christine Car is the one that comes of the collection of Johnny Lightning (you can find severals at ebay.com for less than 10 dollars).

And the item between the tenis balls is the Can Tah used in the movie Desperation! :)

I know it would be impossible to get a genuine one, so I can make the offer knowing my money's safe.

I really would pay a tidy sum for Fine US and UK copies of Carrie inscribed to me and dated 1974/1975. Chances are very slim though.

Finally got the custom box that I commissioned from George and Patricia Sargent at Dragonfly Bindery for the final galley proof of THE SHINING. It's an unusual shaped box - 7" tall by 14" deep - to fit the unusual shaped pages.

Leather spine:

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalleybox1.jpg

Hand tooled leather applique - images of the topiary animals with The Overlook Hotel in the background.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalleybox4.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalleybox3.jpg

Opened to show the contents.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalleybox2.jpg

I really had no idea how to shelve or house or display this unusual early proof but I finally decided to go with a custom box and I like it quite a bit. Patricia's art would best be called primitive, I think, and she uses it on most of the other traycases I have seen. You can usually tell it is her work when you see it.

This is my first "older" magazine with a King story in it. It got a bumped corner as a result, and I toild the seller I was dissapointed that they had not shipped it in a box. The seller apologized and sent me this absolutely free!

I think it is in great shape for a 31 year old magazine.

From the back:

THE WORLD'S BESTSELLING NOVELIST DISCUSSES HIS NEW NOVEL

carlos - there are actually three different covers, as John has shown above with the cool thumbnails. That's the only difference. Each cover is from a different issue or a variant.

Amazon has an exclusive cover and so does Barnes and Noble.

Amazon is selling both the "regular" cover ( the first one shown in John's example) and and Exclusive ( the third one shown in John's example ) .

Barnes and Noble is selling the "regular" and their own Exclusive ( which is the center one in John's examples ).

Note, though, that I went to BN tonight, and they were only carrying their exclusive. None of the "regular" ones.

I had so much going on today that up until the last minute I didn't think I'd make it to this...

Tonight I went to see Art Spiegelman, a writer/illustrator who has built his career in comics, and has won the Pulitzer for his series, Maus, which tackled both his complicated relationship with his father, and the Holocaust.

Spiegelman was in town to give a talk on his life in comics and to promote his two new books, one for adults, "Breakdowns" and one for children, "Jack and the Box." We were told repeatedly that he would be signing only those two books (I think he didn't want to spend all night signing Maus for everyone).

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/Spiegelman101308-Collection.jpg

He inscribed the children's book to my two sons, and the adult one to me. Despite the innocuous cover, the book is definitely for mature audiences.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/Spiegelman101308-Breakdowns1.jpg

At the beginning of his career, Mr. Spiegelman was the creative force behind the original Topp's Wacky Packages (a few sticker cards and a piece of gum in every pack). My friends and I were his target audience when those came out and they were a big part of our childhood for a few years. Rather than Pulitzer Prize winning Maus, it was his work on the Wacky Packages on which I repeatedly blew my allowance as a kid, that was the primary reason I went to see him.

Earlier this year, he released a book chronicling all the series. I bought the only two copies in the store tonight and asked him to sign them despite the stated policy. He kindly agreed, but hesitated a moment, saying, "I've never signed this book, I have to think about how to do it." One for me, one for a childhood friend.

I cant wait, as my name is in it

However, i bet that i 'll be a bit disappointed : the friend which worked on the bibliography told me he just recieved his books and that he got a matching number, #2.
It looks like that i wont be able to get a matching number and that my copies will prob be much higher, as they do not number it themselves but an organisation do it for them.. :-(

However, my friend told me that they are HUGE! (10cm width each), like dictionnaries

Unless I missed something in the description the seller did not disclose the presence of the bookplate. In fact he definitely says "There is no writing, reminder marks, or any other marks of any kind in or on this book!!"

Are you not going to hold him to that? Even if you think the price is a fair one for a book with a bookplate I'll bet you could receive a partial refund for a book that was misrepresented.

Hi again John,

I am surprised that I overlooked that, or at least that I may have failed to mention it in the listing.

That book was consigned to me to sell for a neighbor and I just got off the phone with him.

He feels that the book even with the bookplate is worth more than the $200 you paid for it, being that many of the copies listed had sold up to $400 range. BUT, I explained that because it was not mentioned in the listing that the bidder(s) could not make an honest evaluation for it Prior to bidding and buying it.

I convinced him that a 10% credit would be fair, and he begrudgingly agreed to that. And If agreeable with you, I will issue a Refund for $20.00, back through PayPal, for that oversight and consider the Transaction complete and acceptable.

If not, then I will take the book back for Full a full Refund of your original payment including your return postage and we will re-list the book.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed so if you do want to return it, I can issue you a Return Authorization number and return info.

Allen

Seems fair enough.

I've bought a few things from this guy in the past and been okay, but I really don't like his auctions. Very deceptive, but in a way that you can't nail him.

"Excellent Condition for its 25 years" and other such blanket statements throw me off.

Good Job John.

$180 is great. 1st edition Night Shift in any condition is becoming a hard one to find.

I just added a Carrie to my collection. It's an x-library but only checked out twice and in incredible crisp condition and the jacket is perfect unclipped. Unfortunately I probably paid too much for it at $300 but I really wanted it.

One day I'll swap it out with another one.

Good luck in your Carrie search.

Congrats on your settlement, John - good work! I knew I had multiple copies of both Carrie and Dead Zone, but I verified that, alas, I have no extra firsts. :( My one Carrie first is signed and the others are 10th printing and a BCE. For DZ, one's a first and the other one (signed) is a BCE - sorry, but I'll keep my eyes open for ya!

jhanic
10-16-2008, 03:29 PM
I don't expect to have too much trouble finding a Dead Zone first. I just haven't really tried. I don't think I can easily get a Carrie first at the price I'm willing to pay. I don't want an ex-library copy of it, so that makes a big difference.

I've bought a couple of items from this seller. I seem to always be slightly disappointed with the books once in hand. Details seem to be missing and condition exaggerated.

Fsmdr
10-16-2008, 04:24 PM
I've also bought a book from this seller before. I ended up sending the book back for a refund. Also because it was not in the condition I was led to believe. The reply by the seller was that condition is a subjective issue ( shouldn't a book described as Fine not have a tear in the DJ?). But at least the seller was willing to take the book back.

jhanic
10-16-2008, 04:44 PM
I seldom pay much attention to the seller's claims of condition as long as they have some nice scans of the book. In this case, you can see the frayed dust jacket in the pictures, so I ignored the fact that the seller said the dust jacket was in excellent condition given that it's 30 years old. I could see what I was getting.

Too bad he didn't mention the bookplate, though.

I thought the bottle was totally awesome. Oy rocks! And, if you want to have a ton of fun, get him in on your next tattoo. We soooo had a blast. It made it that much better to have someone as into it as I was - and our artist LOVES comic book art and cartoon art.

Honestly, he has some EXCELLENT freehand stuff - he is REALLY good. I may plan another trip to Vegas just so he can do my Ka tattoo, he's that good. And, he's a lot of fun to talk to. :D

And Oy is a ton of fun. I have to say the experience was much better than the actual tattoo, Oy was a lot of fun to hang out with. :D

Woot! Nice addition, Gretchen!

And yeah, we just happened on New York New York's Halloween display with the two people who are totally freaked out by clowns. Who can resist?

Just after that, at dinner, we got into a ketchup vs. mustard debate. Apparently ketchup scares Maerlyn (yeah, I don't get it either). So, I said to her, "So, you're saying ketchup covered clowns would be the scariest thing ever?" and she was all "YES!" And there you go.

Thanks, Turtlex. I forgot to bring a Guidebook with me, Wiz helped me out on that one.

Is the Bugle that hard to come by? Do you have it? At the time of its release, there was a local comic store with a short stack of copies of the Bugle. I bought 'em all and mailed them out to TDT members on my dime, hoping to save people from the vagaries of eBay.

Yup, kinda hard to find the Bugle now. I dont have one, no. My local store only had a couple and I never got one. Just one of those things, I guess. I saw one cgc'd at a 9.6 - but none higher. You're a good guy for thinking of the folks here. I check the comics at eBay all the time and have never seen a signed Bugle. Very cool.

The Bugle is cheap newsprint, folded without much care. I don't think any would be CGC'ed worth a crap. I would put CGC out of mind when it comes to the Bugle.

But if you're interested... PM me your name and address as a reminder, and I'll check to see if I can find another extra after Nov. 1st, I'm going to be gone until then. Odds are slim, but you never know. :)

Thank Patrick - Just sent a PM. No worries if you can't, I appreciate the offer.

I am going to go back and check my notices, I am pretty sure I just got one for a Bugle that was CGC'd. Weird. I kind of went over it because I really am trying to focus on getting 9.8s ( or better, I do wish ) for my collection. Now I am intrigued.

Regardless, though, it's a GREAT and UNIQUE item.

All right, I've been a little scarce in this thread for awhile now (trying to conserve $$ these days). But given that I just had more comics signed by Jae Lee, picture this spread in your head:

With the exception of the Bugle (which I never purchased), I have a Jae Lee signature on every issue, variant, sketch book, Guide book, Almanac of the entire series so far. While it will be a bit more difficult to get future issues signed given that Jae left the roost here in NYC for Vegas, my wish is to end up with a signed copy of everything published in this series. Now that would be a one-of-a-kind collection and a definite Pride & Joy.

Matt, that's a fine idea!

Turtlex, that makes more sense as the Spotlight was a magazine rather than a newspaper.

Ok, so here are the rest of my Jae Lee inscribed comics. They are the sketch variants from the first story arc.

Patrick/David/Bob -

Thanks a lot guys! I'd been searching for a signed copy for about five years now, which isn't THAT long in the scheme of things, but essentially the length of my collecting "career" so far.

My ultimate goal is to have 2 signed copies of all his books, as well as a copy of each signed and inscribed to myself, plus an ARC of each (I'm very much regretting selling my lot of ARCs last year!:arg:).

But for now, I'm happy to bask in the knowledge that I have a complete set of signed Slade books!:excited:

That is a really nice collection of Ned Dameron stuff, Ari. Certainly unique. I've not heard of anything like it.

Chris Cavalier once had what was called a proof of THE CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF. It was photocopied pages of King's typescript for the book. Included were Wrightson's preliminary sketches for the twelve main illustrations. But, IIRC, they were photocopies of the sketches, not the originals like you have. Your package of preliminaries with Ned's thoughts on each one are really something special.

They still have a few left, but a word of caution, they just drop it in an envelope (http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/3761/picture068ar2.jpg) without any protection and mail it to you.

I was lucky to actually get it as they ommitted one of the digits from my street address.

Anyone remember how many of these he signed? I want to say 100, but am not sure.

Shining was published in France in may of 1979, by Alta. It was also published the same month with exactly the same copyright page (from what i heard) by another publisher : this would correspond to a kind of a BoMC edition (that didnt exist yet).
I've been looking for a copy for awhile! Even though it isnt exactly the 1st edition, the fact that it was published at the same time makes it valuable to me.. so am glad of it, especially since i will then own those 2 editions :-)

I just won this from Calla Wolf:

UK 1st Bachman Books (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290268969010&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019)

This is one I've been trying to get for a long time.

I AM sorry, though, that Ceri is going through some rough times so that he has to part with this and other items. Best of luck, Ceri!

John

Thanks matey
