hm.... I have a whole box full of SK Books on cassette - wondering what to do with them......

You can also convert them to Mp3.

http://www.hammacher.com/Product/82549

A few months ago i bought a tape recorder that needs to be plugged to the laptop and you record via audacity then turn them to mp3. Costed about 15€, shipped from China :)
I used it on some tapes.
Unfortunately though, i dont have any material to record VHS.

I am going to say you mean VHS to DVD? If so there is one I remember reading about. http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8 Like anything there is pro and con reviews.

From US VHS to... divx, dvd... whatever to make a copy and backup.
But.... i dont have any TV (and dont plan to get one), nor VCR reader, nor US VCR reader... so it doesnt help :D

I would be interested in doing the old documentary Stephen King's World of Horror. (i have the NL DVD of THIS IS HORROR)

This particular former library copy is beat, but the story is one of my favorites, and the original custom artwork is fantastic! The talented artist really outdid herself on this one. Not sure if you can read the titles on the books, but they're all King. These photos don't at all do justice to the detail.

Just a little tip to pass on: Baby nails are very sharp, and babies love to touch their faces. Invest in little hand mitts or shirts with handsies so they don't scratch up their faces.

Ari - what do you think of the red leather books? I can't decide if I like them or if they are ugly and i see them for sale a lot. Is the quality up to par or are they cheaply made?

You know...I was thinking THE SAME. I guess they look pretty okay in the bookcase but I really don't want to open another "battle front" in terms of my collection. Even when I'm about to get some completed (I'm only four books away from having the spanish hc and audiobook collection completed, only three HC US editions to have 'em all and only one Castle Rock Newsletter missing), and others are growing (magazines and antologies with a King story), I think that if I keep these red leather books I'll try to have all of them, which will cause to divide my money into more items instead of looking for the ones I wanted first.

So...for now I'll probably keep 'em, but it is not out of the question that I might sell 'em all except IT (I'm trying to adquire different editions of that book). :)

Congrats Stockerlone!!!! What is the little sign to the right?

From the few attempts I had with purchasing the Red Leather (Is it really leather? It does not seem like it.) edition it is not a great set. The edging on the Red Leather edition seems to be very brittle, it rolls inward, and the leather cracks. It is so brittle it seems like it needs some form of conditioning. They also can be scratched very easily. This set is a great reason to acquire the " OCCUPY 2013: Ambannon Books Stephen King Collection". http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17200-OCCUPY-2013-Ambannon-Books-Stephen-King-Collection

Give me about a half hour here to do multiple uploads and an unveiling of some Pride and Joys in my personal collection...one set I've had for several years now, the other I just obtained through a connection with a member of these boards (who will remain nameless but he knows who he is). And yes, of course, they are Dark Tower oriented and adds considerably to my Dark Tower collection.....

Stay tuned...unless I get interrupted here........

wizardsrainbow

As most of you know, I was (still am) a pretty serious King collector before I bought Betts Books in 2009. The Dark Tower has been the centerpiece of my personal collection and I like to think that I have acquired some quite rare and perhaps one of a kind pieces over the years....I believe I have the only signed Orange Gunslinger proof copy in the world and the same for the numbered UK Dark Tower VII Proof....I am also a big fan of the Dark Tower artwork and over the years have befriended several of the DT artists...Mind you, I've only picked up scraps of artwork as one member here has pretty much cornered the market on artwork (LOL...you know I love you!!!).

But here are some one-of-a-kind Dark Tower preliminary sketches that I am fortunate enough to own...This first image you have seen before....the original charcoal sketch of Roland by the reflecting pool (done prior to Gunslinger's publication in 1982)...I have to confess here...Michael Whelan gifted this sketch to me one night as a Xmas present several years ago, but I might be compelled to return it (trade it actually) as he and Audrey think it should be married to another piece they own, so might in the end give it up...but for now, it is still mine and here it is....

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Oracle_Gunslinger_Study_Sketch_Close-up.JPG

Now, these next set of images I just obtained in the last month. THEY ARE PHIL HALE'S COMPLETE SET OF ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCHES HE DID FOR THE DRAWING OF THE THREE GRANT EDITION prior to its publication in 1987. This is a one-of-a-kind set and I am thrilled to own them.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/DOTT14.jpg

In addition to adding all the original prelims Phil did, I also acquired ALL of the prelim sketches he did for the 15 or so remarques he did last year that were sold through Betts Books. Here is 1 example of a prelim Remarque sketch...

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/DOTT_Remarque1.jpg

Next up are some sketches I've had for several years. These are original sketches that Ned Dameron did prior to submitting his artwork for DT III: The Waste Lands. These are studies he did of Roland and Susannah. At the time I acquired these in 2009, Ned wrote me a note (pictured first) explaining the work.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/DTIII_1.jpg

These two images are under transparent paper which I have not removed, so the images are not as vibrant as they would be without the transparencies:

lol nope, wasn't joking. I completely didn't see Eddie pushing the wheelchair, but rather a man standing behind a bent-over woman with his hands on the small of her back and her ass pushed into his crotch. How's that for a Rorschach test? lol

"Dare we ask how much the financial damage was? (approximately)"

I always wonder this question, yet I do not ask it. It's kind of like asking "How much money do you have in your bank account and wallet at this very moment?" It's very personal. I would imagine the damage is pretty high, though.

Dare we ask how much the financial damage was? (approximately)

The damage was far far LESS than what you might guess.....I'd have to say roughly $50 per image I think comes close (Including BOTH the original DT II sketches and all the remarque sketches).

You are right though....I often want to ask.."How much did you pay for that" My opinion, rude or not, it is your right to ASK the question although you may not ALWAYS get an answer...so with me...ask away.

But the question can be expanded to include is it ever appropriate to ask someone in a public forum how much someone paid for something?

ChristineB
04-18-2013, 08:01 AM
I see no problem with asking the question. It's just a question for heaven's sake, it's not like they are holding a gun to your head and making you tell. If you don't want to tell then politely say so, or if you don't mind that person knowing send them a PM. But again, it's just an innocent question.
Do people here really think that when someone like Shannon asks this question there is any malice involved? I would ask the question myself if I was interested in the answer, sorry to any here that feel offended by an innocent question.

Maybe it is because I was raised in a different (earlier) time but I was taught that it was rude (maybe not quite the right word...inappropriate, maybe?) to ask someone how much they paid for something. Not saying I have never done it because I have. But really it is none of my business what someone paid for something.

I enjoy the openness of the forum where you can feel comfortable asking someone about price. I am sure everyone feels differently about this - and those people might not want to give a reply and I respect that. I think most people are asking to try and gauge value of an item (in case they are looking to make a similar purchase) so they can find a comfortable zone. Also some people are interested in the great deals people have been able to get (there's always that "damn why couldn't I have gotten that great deal..." feeling).

Bob,
The question was asked "in fun" directly to a person who advertises & promotes his bookstore on this very site, it seemed obvious to me he would not really care.
It was just a curiosity nothing more.
Is it my imagination or is there something else going on with your very directed statement?

Nothing directed personally towards you. You asked David how much he paid for something he posted out of his personal collection. Someone (Shannon, I think) posted that he was hesitant to ask such a personal question but often wondered how much someone paid for something. I just added my thoughts to the discussion. Lots of different opinions on the subject it seems.

wizardsrainbow
04-19-2013, 06:09 AM
Yes, lots of different personal opinions on this subject of ask/don't ask.....I'd say 90% of the time I would share the information with someone who asked and my feathers would not be ruffled. I respect others who deem it inappropriate to ask and/or are reluctant to share information.

Now, I would draw the line if someone asked me the value of my entire personal collection....that is a little too personal for me.

A well respected forum like this, and the vast knowledge of its members is like a Stephen King price guide. Being there really is no definitive collectors guide or website I can understand people asking question regarding the pricing of certain items especially when it comes to older publications and rarer collectibles.

biomieg
04-19-2013, 07:04 AM
It's probably less offensive to ask 'what would be the (market) value of item such and such' instead of asking 'what did you pay for it'?

(not that I personally find a direct approach to be offensive, just adding my two cents to the discussion)

Generally, if I'm going to ask the price of something I'll PM if I know someone in particular has (or likely has the item). If I ask out loud on the forums it's because I'm looking to buy, have found one from someone or someplace I'm not familiar with, want legitimate opinions on whether or not its worth it, and have no idea who to ask directly. The problem with an open forum is how to do it without actually putting a price out there or giving clues as to where its located ... because if you do that and someone else realizes its a deal, it may suddenly end up sold or with lots of bidders who previously didn't have a clue. And yes it happens, unfortunately. But, at the same time, I value those legitimate opinions greatly and am thankful that folks are willing to provide them.

Shannon
04-20-2013, 07:57 AM
For a short time I included how much I paid for things in my "Shannon's New Additions" updates in my collection thread. I stopped simply because I forgot about it, but my point is that ... I think the price of what you paid for something can be just as interesting as the item itself or the condition its in.

You know what's weird though? If someone from the site were to ask me (publicly or privately) "Hey Shannon, how much did you pay for that Knowing Darkness S/L?" I would want to tell them and we'd have a small discussion about it. But when people come to my house, either people I'm friends with or friends of friends, like at a party, and they ask me questions regarding money and my Stephen King collection, I always get a tiny bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. Not sure why.

Not so weird. Here you are amongst fellow collectors, and prices provide a frame of reference that most everyone here can understand and appreciate. Folks outside the King collecting fold may hear the $$ but not be able to understand what it means. Plus, I don't know your friends or friends of friends, but sometimes those types of questions lead to silent little judgments. Or not so silent. I don't think we get much of that on the forum. Opinions and disagreements, sure, but not "geeze, how could someone pay $800 for a freakin' book?"

I think people ask and say a lot of things on the internet that they wouldn't ask or say in person. Maybe akin to older times when people wrote in letters uncomfortable things that they didn't want to say in person.

I always laugh when my non book collector friends pull out the "you paid that for a book?!?!?"

I always counter that by politely pointing out what each and everyone of them spend their own money on.
Boats, cars, cellphones etc. You'll notice pretty quickly almost everyone in one way or another are spending fools.
I work with a few who don't pay the monthly bills but insist on a daily $4.00 Starbucks cup of coffee.
If we can afford it without struggle who cares what you spend you money on, especially if it makes you happy.
I smile at my collection almost daily.. And my wife smiles at me. (I wonder why, hmm...)

Hehehe .. you're 100% right on that one James, I don't sell, in fact, this is the very first item out of my collection, ever, that has been passed along as another collector as such :)

Long story short, when CD first announced the 25th Anniversary Edition, they made it clear that there was a limit of one S/L per household, so I hopped on and ordered myself the Holy Trinity (and the matching numbered art portfolio).

Time passed, and CD sent one of their periodic emails saying that they'd had a couple of cancelled orders, etc, and had a few spare S/L's available for sale - without even thinking about the "one per" rule, I ordered another copy on a whim - I didn't need it, I didn't particularly want it, but that didn't stop me from ordering in anyway

Funnily enough, at the time, I was a member over on CD's forum (although Bill the Haven Whore was doing his best even then to get me to defect to TDT - man, that guy can be persistent!!!) and when I posted the dynamic duo on my collection thread there, a couple of the other members were a little ... miffed ... because I'd snagged two copies in spite of the "one per" rule.

So, when Ari recently mentioned that he was looking for a copy, I figured that, seeing as how I had two copies anyway (and the only multiples I have in the collection are remarques) why not share the wealth with a fellow collector.

Something like that anyway.

Ari - I'm really pleased that this beauty arrived in good condition, in a reasonable time frame, and, most importantly, that you'll enjoy having it in your collection
