Yes, honestly I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. I didn't expect to find that. I agree, it's not like it's a signed 1st edition Carrie or anything like that. But it's a start :)

I think most would agree that you could throw a rock in any direction and hit a Joe Hill sig. This doesn't deter me, however and I love the fact that he signs everything. I try to shoot for personalized copies when I can. Nice find!

Been meaning to post these for some time, but been extremely busy over last couple of months. This is how I spent my tax return at Betts.

For the COTW, due to a previous owners name plate, I made an offer for less then the original asking price which was excepted, and then David noticed some flaws to the slipcase, so he gave me an additional discount. (just FYI, for those of you who keep track of sales prices at Betts). Thanks so much David!!!

I committed to buying this a week or so prior to Bernie's unfortunate passing.

I originally committed to buying the Glenn Chadbourne version of the Colorado Kid limited edition, but David discovered some defects. He gave me three choices, cancel, discount, or substitute his personal copy of a J.K Potter. I choice the substitition option as I actually wanted that version more anyway. Thanks so much David for doing this!!!!

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/IMG_20170403_205111721.jpg

Was bummed to discover that the traycase is about 2mm to tall to fit on the shelf with all my other PS limited editions. Trying to figure a way to effectively raise the bottom of the shelf above a few mm's.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/IMG_20170422_185111483.jpg

The 'Salem's Lot is the gift edition with traycase from skephenkingcollector.com with the photos.

Was also bummed to discover it this was about 3/16in too tall to fit on the intended shelf. Considering creating a new set of holes to put the pegs in.

I think most, if not all, these once belonged to members here.

Other recent additions not pictured include:

`Salem's Portfolio from CD
Cycle of the Werewolf prints from Nakatomi
Gwendy's Botton Box with Chizmar signature

Thanks,
Mike

It's been a while since I've posted here, but with a flurry of books coming in, I'm working on updating. First I thought I'd show The Shining Gift Edition, as it exists in the wild. I've got a couple blemishes on the Slipcover and in the Book, but I'm sure that CD will straighten that up quickly when they're back from vacation. Lots of pictures in the Album.

I've got a number of new things in, which are all shown on my First Collection Post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?15046-Book-Collection-TCCBodhi), I just don't have the photos yet to go with them.

Congratulations everyone!

I've just returned from a business trip to London, Madrid and Barcelona (and the book world was involved in the three cities...I'll have news later on this year) :D and scored a couple of cool things (some arrived before my flight and some I scored once there):

https://scontent-gru2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/17880707_10213691152257789_5723568431887848192_o.j pg?oh=ad1a3405013d4fb36e9faa6577bfd6a5&oe=59E0AFAA

NOS4R2 was signed and sketched by Joe Hill. And it was just there, in the bookstore, with the regular copies and at the cover price. :D

https://scontent-gru2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/19030587_10213691154857854_8998231037574644469_n.j pg?oh=5daa7455302350f273db0da97ffe2d3e&oe=59A00CCC

And now one of the coolest things. I was in Madrid walking toward the hotel and decided to detour and walk through the book fair. The plan was to visit the whole fair on the next day but I was so close that it couldn't hurt. The only condition was not to stop since I had a commitment one hour and a half later and I had to stop by at the hotel to take a shower. Well, when I was walking and looking at the stands I face one that belongs to Nórdica Libros, a Spanish publisher that just produced a very cool illustrated edition of The Man in the Black Suit. The illustrator was signing so I stopped by and left with this nice remarque :)

This is the ComicCon edition, and not signed by "Beryl Evans".

Great choice Dez....very few of these have shown up signed!

What was your "2nd choice"?

Let me tell you, Rick, this was such a hard decision. In fact, before I won, when I was thinking about which book I would pick, I gave up as it was too hard of a decision and I was sure I wasn't going to win anyway.

The 2nd choice was between Gwendy's and CTCC. I was leaning towards Gwendy's (perhaps some quote about me being a "good one"). The choice was so much more difficult than I thought it would be. I eventually just decided that I really liked the stories in BOBD so that won. And as I reread it looking for quotes, I knew that I definitely preferred that book over the rest (plus lots of good suggestions for my inscription). But it was a hard to pick!

Long story short, Rose and I collect Disney movies, brand new, sealed, best version possible (Blu-Ray, if its not available on blu-ray then DVD, and so on) and the average price on eBay is around fifteen bucks, higher for the big ones, Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, etc. Well, I just got one hell of a deal. Hell, that's a lot of movies in one auction - good one! Does collecting in movies follow similar lines in books? (i.e., limited edition, signed, "first" edition, etc.?)

Shannon
07-12-2017, 03:15 AM
Not like what youre thinking, but there are many different editions of movies, see here for example:

http://www.blu-ray.com/Pinocchio/18641/#Releases

That's all the blu-ray editions of just that movie. The plan is to collect all the basic blu-ray/first editions first, then go from there. This listing checks off a LOT of boxes in my Justin Brooks-like list I've created.

Was really looking forward to posting my NP&J today...a signed 1st edition of a title that I did not have.

Unfortunately, what showed up was a signed BCE.

Amazing how the slight difference between the two can ruin my day.

A custom traycase for my S/L set of The Plant:

Special thanks to a member here for helping to make this happen!

In case you were wondering, that little "ledge" built into the right side of the case is there because PART 3 is not as tall as PARTS 1 & 2. PART 3 sits on the bottom between the ledge and case....PART 2 sits on top of PART 3 and the ledge.

I was lucky to add some real beauties while I was away on vacation. First up is a RED numbered copy of The Eyes of the Dragon. This particular copy comes from the 10 copies that designer Michael Alpert was given by Stephen King for his efforts. As you all know, most of these were personalized as gifts from Stephen, which is why I feel so lucky to have one that is not. I vacillated back and forth on this one, but after conferring with David at Betts as to the seller and the book's legitimacy, I jumped on it. Being a sub 300 number also allowed me to contact Paul at Suntup Press to secure a matching number for my portfolio - different artists, I know, but they will be matching numbers nonetheless. As the seller noted, this was left in its original box for over 30 years, and the jet black condition is just gorgeous.

I also had this baby waiting for me when I returned from vacation. I was able to get Ned to do multiple remarques in my my Signed Limited Edition of The Wastelands. It was a treat to be able to exchange ideas on the images I wanted. The opening one is from pages 46-47, when Roland is gouging out Shardik's eye with Eddie and Susannah watching. Ned noted that there was a little bleed through, and so he added a continuing motif of Shardik's robotic teeth on the ensuing page - I love how artists turn a negative into a positive. Ned was then generous enough to engage me again with the same book before returning it. I wanted the book to open and close with his work. After exchanging ideas again, he added a remarque or Jake and Oy with copies of the two books, Charlie the Choo Choo and Riddle-De-Dum! that will play a central role in the next book's opening. I think it's perfect. I have also included, thanks to Ned, the small series of practice pieces that Ned produced, just to see his conceptualizing. Happy Birthday Kris - Enjoy!

Thanks Jerome...I appreciate the reassurance.

I have had very few problems like this on ebay, and it has been a long while since the last one....glad to know that ebay and Paypal have my back.

I am glad there is a good record of the conversation, plus I have included photos in my complaint.

According to what I see on my "complaint form"...I need to wait five days from the submission of my complaint to involve ebay.

If it makes you feel any better, last time I had an issue, it took eBay 4 minutes to decide in my favor (after the 5 days, of course). So it shouldn't take long after the week is over!

So are you saying that an acetate sheet should be laid on top of each book, covering the image? Is there any risk of runoff, or will the acetate prevent that from happening completely?

I would think the cover should be over the front of the slipcase too, if the S/L is lined up next to other books, right?

Not sure what you mean by "runoff", but if you wrap the books in acetate (like the S/L of Cujo (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Cujo+-+S+L)), or even slip a sheet between the two volumes, and another between Volume Two and the slipcase, you will reduce/eliminate abrasions.

I suppose you could also cut a sheet of acetate and crease it in four places so it wraps around the slipcase like a DJ, and one of the flaps you tuck inside of the case would protect the image on Volume Two.

UK 1st of Desperation
US 1st of The Eyes of the Dragon
US 1st of Danse Macabre
US 1st of The Bachman Books

That's the good news.

The bad news, as that before I got there, they had Carrie, The Stand, Night Shift, The Waste Lands, and Salem's Lot........no idea f they were firsts or not, but I suspect they were as these books belonged to a collector...all that I saw were firsts in Brodart covers in beautiful shape.

Ok, so I thought I would start with the extras that came with The Eyes of the Dragon art portfolios from Suntup. I was so pleased that Paul sent me one for each set, one for my numbered, and one for my lettered. I was ready to get rid of my box and it was only then that I noticed the tube that contained the posters - I almost screwed up royally. The Palladini book is great.

And here is my numbered edition. I gotta tell you, I found the linen napkin to be one of the finest attention to details I have seen from a publisher. I teach The Eyes of the Dragon to my freshmen in high school and we have had many a discussion surrounding the working title for the novel, The Napkins. I also loved that it was packaged with love from Thomas, at least that is want the note says. Another fine touch! This production is just awesome. If you have not ordered one, you really should. It is only surpassed by the quality of the lettered edition I will post pictures of later. I also love that I have a number that matches my Philtrum Press limited.

This happened several years ago, but it's something I still feel giddy about. I used to practically live in mall bookstores in the eighties and nineties when I had nothing else better to do, and back then there was B. Dalton Booksellers, Waldenbooks, Border Books, and Tower Records along with the big B&N. Anyway, I wandered into Tower Records to peruse their music and Anime movies, actually having nothing on my mind about books, when I walked past the art book section and stopped.

Now I love hardbacks and all, but I feel an incredible disdain for coffee-table-sized books as a b@stardization of gaudy reading due to their oversized height and overbearing weight, so on the whole I avoid these like the plague. BUT, I suddenly remembered I had found a previous art book called "Nightmares In The Sky" from this very store, which coincidentally, was the last time I had come in here, and decided to see if anything interesting like that showed up again (that book had completely caught me off-guard when it arrived in stores since I never followed any publications for new SK books back then...).

As I looked through the selection, this ugly bright red-and-white monster wrapped in clear plastic fell out of the bottom right corner of the shelf, hidden behind the stack of other books. It had "MY PRETTY PONY" in giant, horrendous letters across its cover, and all I could think of was the glitzy, girly, diabetic-coma-inducing cartoon show and toys that my sister played with, so naturally I was immediately repelled by it. BUT, since my sister's 11th birthday was around the corner, I figured "Cool, here is her gift... she can keep it locked in her room with all her Ponies, Care Bears, and Cabbage Patch dolls and have something to read while she looks at the pictures. I checked the price sticker on the plastic and was equally rewarded with a nice, low, coffee-table book pricing.

$2.50 plus tax - Closeout....... Sweet.

So, I hoisted up this thing and headed to the registers with a corny smile on my face (notice that I never even read the spine, not even ONCE...), and plopped it on the counter. The guy behind the register looked over at my intended purchase....

...and froze, I mean completely FROZE.... with a look on his face like I had just handed him a note saying...

"I HAVE A NUCLEAR DEVICE STRAPPED TO MY CHEST WRAPPED WITH BALL BEARINGS AND RAZOR BLADES AND WANT ALL YOUR GOLD BULLION YOU KEEP IN YOUR SAFE."

Fortunately, the assistant manager happened to be back there as well and told the guy to put the book down and he would handle the transaction. As he did this, I thought, for a moment, this guy might actually start CRYING...

Over some gaudy kids book...

...about glitter-junk...

Ohhhhh-kay.

As he was ringing me up, he then asked me how much I liked Stephen King, which I obviously thought was an odd question, and I told him that he was my all-time favorite writer, to which he responded, "Not surprising".

Curiouser and curiouser.

So, already long story now being shortened, I get this thing home, take it out of the plastic, and set it on the coffee-table for my sis to find when she got home from school later in the day, only to see the spine with "STEPHEN KING" written on it. I opened it up thinking it was probably some author who had the same name, only to find out it was really a King book I had never known about. I went back to TR and chased down the manager and got the backstory to all this.

Apparently the guy behind the counter was a big King collector like me and had ordered the book for himself, but without some sort of special approval he was supposed to have in order to get it (probably from the book dealer he had ordered it from...). THIS time it had pissed off his manager something fierce, so he tried to get the dealer to refund the money back but was refused. AND being that there was no bar code in the computer system for this item, the manager had no choice but to price out the book on the shelf, with the condition that if no one bought the book before the guy's shift ended at noon, he could claim it (and it would be the last order he would ever receive there). I looked at the time on my receipt which read "11:45 AM".

15 minutes later and I would've never even known about this book. Nice.

So... why was the price so low I asked? Since it wasn't bar coded it had to be earmarked as a special order, the only cost attachment he could find was the shipping on the item since the approval situation had been bypassed (something about the cost of the book going against the company rather than the store I guess...), so he marked it out to the only pricetag he had for it, which was $2.50 + 4.5% sales tax.

WOW.

And he wouldn't go into any details on why they didn't fire the guy, just that he was reprimanded. As if losing a limited-run SK book to a customer wasn't bad enough.

It literally is surreal. Goes to show that you can still find rarities among common bookstores if you just keep your eyes open!

Just kidding!! Great story though!!

Just a handful of regular US Firsts found today at Half Price Books. There is another copy of the 1st printing of Gwendy's Button Box for $20 if someone really needs one. DJhas some crinkles on the top edge but no tears, rip or any real defects, just typical wear from being on the store shelf.

Today's Buys:
Gwendy's Button Box
Dolores Claiborne
Black House
The Journals Of Eleanor Druse (I know it isn't really SK)
& Christopher Rice's The Snow Garden (which I MIGHT be able to arrange to get signed)

I managed to pick up The Shining from Sub Press last week for cover price. I was expecting it to arrive with dinged corners or bad rubbing on the marbling hence they held it back but I would say this copy is meat perfect. If anyone can see rubbing (I. Don't know what I'm looking for) let me know! I'm pumped either way. I finally got to fill this hole in my collection.

That's awesome that you were able to get one. I know their servers were pretty bogged down during that sale. Congrats, looks great!
