**watches hopes dashed against the rocks**

There are still the unsigned audios read by King, Matt. :)

Ah...unsigned would be totally fine then.

You'll find those on ebay sometimes.

It would be nice if they would re-release them on CD, but I guess since they did release the CD audio of the "revised, expanded" Gunslinger, the chances are slim...

If I could get them, I may have to find a thing to simply burn them to a CD

I have DTI, DTII and DTIII on audio read by King if you want them.

I was bagging and putting away a Thinner proof and a notice fell out of it.
I've probably handled 25 of this proof over the years and have never seen this before. It welcomes new writer Richard Bachman and introduces his new venture into the horror genre. I made the image large so you can read it. So here's the address to copy and paste into your browser.

That's a great item, Hutch.

Are there any stories about how they were able to keep Bachman's identity a secret inside NAL? I wonder how many people were in on the secret. It had to have been a small number otherwise the rumor mill would have leaked it long before the guy who actually figured it out.

very cool Hutch!

And yes I do have a double signed Duma Key, lol. I never noticed... I just saw the fist signature page, took a picture and closed the book. I never thought of going to the second page. Now I don't feel so bad paying a decent price for this book while others got it at cost.

I'm pretty sure this is the first book that I have that's signed twice by King.

I have just procurred another signed 1st/1st of Duma Key, and it is on the way to me now. (unlikely it will be double signed).

One of these just sold on ebay two days ago for $350 plus shipping!

I am selling my copy for $300 shipped and insured, and $50 of that will go to the Haven Foundation Fundraiser this site is running.

PM me if interested!

(I posted this in the Haven Fundraiser thread as well....just wanted to make sure as many people see it as possible).

Here's my haul from Half Price Books this weekend:

ARC of Richard Ford's latest novel, The Lay of the Land.
ARC of Hearts in Atlantis with both letters still folded inside.
1st ed of Cormac McCarthy's Cities of the Plain.
Signed PB of Brian Keene's Rising.

The first three books cost $6.98 each. The signed Keene was $3.48

I've never read Brian Keene. The only reason I picked it up is b/c I recognized the name from being mentioned around here. I flipped to the beginning to read the first few paragraphs and saw a signature on the title page.

Thanks, guys.

The HIA letters are just promotional letters from the publisher. One is from Susan Moldow (Scribner VP and Publisher) urging booksellers to spread the word about HIA, telling them that it isn't a typical SK book. The other one is a lengthy letter from King about how HIA came about. I can take closer pics if anyone is interested in reading them.

Calla, that's a great endorsement of Keene. Maybe I'll dive into Rising after I finish Duma Key.

I just got my copy of the paperback UK Penguin Readers version of Misery. A thumbnail is attached.

This book is not really worth the money! It is not King's story, but "retold" by Robin Waterfield. It's a total of 87 pages long, followed by six pages of activities for a classroom.

There are a total of six full-page illustrations by Ian Andrews. His style is reminiscent of Mark Geier's (remember the Green Mile ones?). I don't have the ability to post the illustrations without destroying the book.

None of the pages of Misery's Return are "retold".

Interestingly, on the copyright page, the following appears:

"The moral right of the adapter and of the illustrator has been asserted."

I wonder what that means?

Stephen King Hand Signed Promo Bookmark (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330217072615)

(I told the seller they could keep the paperback of The Stand).

I have seen a few of these on ebay, and decided to grab one as the price seemed fair to me.

Here is the last one I saw on ebay

Stephen King book/autograph (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280202646675)

The card reads:

"Dear Constant Reader, If you've been waiting for the Dark Tower novels to be completed, they are. So, this summer would be a good time to start the story of Roland (or to refresh your memory). See the front of this card for publication dates.

(etc.)

The end is near, so saddle up. I think you'll be glad you did.

Best wishes,

Stephen King (actual signature).

FYI: The card is computer-generated. The signature is real."

The Stand was just something the seller was throwing in.

Stephen King sent out the bookmark (actual signature), a letter (facsimile signature) and a copy of Black House as a package to those that were on his "waiting list" to get a signed book right before the release of The Revised Gunslinger.

Here is another one that randtor recently sold

Stephen King Black House; Special signed insert! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110207706913)

As you can see, it sold for quite a bit more, but it also included a copy of Black House (which I don't need) and the letter which reads

"Dear Constant Reader, As part of my plan to retire and reduce my workload, I will no longer be autographing books through the mail. I know you have been waiting quite some time and have, therefore, signed the enclosed flyer to honor your request for an autograph. Please enjoy this copy of Black House with my compliments and best wishes, and thanks for waiting so patiently for your autograph.
Sincerely,
Stephen King
P.S. And really - don't forget Wolves of the Calla in November!"

I feel the same way. I am certainly not going to buy the variants while their collectibility is hot. I learned my lesson with The Gunslinger Born. Some guy on eBay a week or so ago had multiple sets of all 6 of the Jae Lee sketch variants for The Gunslinger Born for about $79 PER SET a couple of weeks ago. I paid that much sometimes for a single issue. Not this time around!

My thoughts exactly Bob.

If anyone bought all 7 sketch variants of The Gunslinger Born at the MSRP they paid $375.00. I paid about $200 for mine and then i saw teh auctions you referred to for $79 and groaned. I'll wait this time!

I went to a game parlor at lunch and the guy had a stack out but would not sell any as he was validating his comics shipment in against his order - I had to give him my name and mumber and he told me he would save one if he had any left after subscriptions. At least I did manage to pick up two copies of the marvels fav Authors freebie! I'll go to my regular comics store after work tonight I think!

This is the corrected "A" proof. It is reported that less than 24 were made; does this seem accurate to y'all? I have seen a few for sale and they seem more accessible than that low production would indicate. Opinions?

Last night I attended to IRON MAIDEN concert in Buenos Aires and a friend of mine won a contest organized by the band itself. My friend, myself and other 10 persons jumped on the scenary during "Heaven can wait" and we sang the chorus of the song!!!

That's COOL!!

Years ago I got to sing with Black Sabbath when their singer at the time, Tony Martin, had a sore throat on tour. They gave the audience the choice of a rescheduled gig or a sing along.

So, I've sung Paranoid with Tony Iomi on one side of me and Geezer Butler on the other. I'm not sure who was drumming that day but I THINK it was Cozy Powell.

Thanks,

I actually have worked pretty hard in the past couple of years on my photos. As you know a mylar cover or anything glossy will give horrible reflections, either by the camera flash or by the lighting in the room. The same problems occur with framed artwork, which is another hard one to photograph. I actually feel pretty proud that I finally feel confident in my photo taking ability. lol

This is a repost. I posted this over on the Horror mall forums yesterday (oddly enough). Anyway I don't do anything fancy, I just take the photos on a table where I place the book.

To get the best pictures take them in the daytime in a lighted room. Do not place the books under a ceiling light or have the book's face facing a table lamp. Shoot the pictures without the flash. This will give you the closest representation to a scan. Also when I get it into Photoshop all I do is click on Auto Adjust Contrast, and that'll brighten it up without changing the colors (this is why the Christine photo looks all bright).

This picture is small, but I did take it yesterday. It's the Absolute Sandman v1 slipcase, which is very glossy and is just about impossible to photograph without getting a reflection from somewhere, but with the steps stated above it worked out great. The slipcase is way too big to scan, but from this picture it looks like a scan.

http://www.gusfromcbus.com/authorpages/neilgaiman/imagesgraphicnovels/theabsolutesandman_sc.gif

I actually re-did this one a couple of days ago, because the pictures I took initially a year ago were so bad. The old picture had a big reflection in the photo and you couldn't even read part of the cover.

So what I try to do is take pictures without the flash and not have any light reflected in the book(s), usually by an outside source (lamps). That's why I like shooting photos in the daytime, the light coming in through the windows is usually enough lighting for a photo.

Scoogs
03-14-2008, 10:07 PM
If you do need to light something and don't have one of those nice little photo studios like RF posted, just buy a couple of sheets of white foamcore. Use a desk lamp or some other sort of light that you can adjust, but don't point it at the books. Put some of the foamcore on the sides and aim the light at that. Quite a bit of it will reflect onto the books and if you play with the angles you shouldn't get any reflections.

Most standard product photography will also be top lit (in addition to a side light or two).

If you don't have any lights and absolutely must use the camera flash, cover it with a coffee filter. It's thin enough that some of the flash will still make it through the paper, but thick enough that it will diffuse it and "should" prevent hot spots in the photos. (Don't just hold it in front of the flash, tape it down or secure it somehow so it is snug against the flash lense.)

Randall Flagg
03-15-2008, 05:15 AM
A tri-pod works to help avoid using flash. Long exposures aren't subject to jitter.
I have used mine with the timer, you click the shutter, step back and wait for the timer countdown, when the shutter opens there is no jiggle from your hand at the beginning or during the exposure.

This just came in today. I think it is very interesting and I don't have anything else quite like it in my collection. It is a first edition of THE EYES OF THE DRAGON, the 1987 trade edition by Viking. It's a nice copy with an absolutely perfect dust jacket.

But what makes it unique are the inscriptions.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/eyesdragon.jpg

On the half-title page King has boldly inscribed the book and took up about 2/3 of the page in doing so.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/eyesdragonkinginscrip.jpg

Approximately one month later Naomi King inscribed the book on the green ffe. She basically repeats what her Dad had written one month earlier.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/eyesdragonnaomiinscrip.jpg

Naomi is one of the people to whom King dedicated the book and, I suppose, that is, at least partly, why she inscribed the book.

Does anyone know who "Michael Schaefer" might be? Any thoughts on the significance of the inscriptions?

I think it's likely the family lives/lived in Bangor. If so, Stu and Penney probably know them or know of them. I've sent an e-mail to Stu and we'll see if he can shed some light on it for me. Betts seems to be closed today so it might be a couple of days before I hear back.

nice stuff guys. And I like the US Thinner with band nameless. That's one I still need to get, my first doesn't have the band, although I do have the UK band.

Anyway, I just received the Hodder & Stoughton UK Limited of Wizard and Glass. Now I just need the UK Limited Regulators/Desperation and I'll be happy with my UK limiteds. I'll pass on the Bag of Bones, and we'll see about Insomnia. I have a gift, and that might be enough.

But I had a question. I received a black slipcase for the UK Limited Wizard & Glass. I have a feeling this isn't the correct slipcase. I'm assuming it's red. Any help on this?

The one with the title is just a standard 1st edition, of The Stand Uncut, the one next to it with no title is just an error dust jacket on a first edition book, one of the odditys i picked up. Somehow the title was never printed on the jacket, other wise it is just a normal 1st editon jacket !!

I went to the second store and got two--one for me and one for another member of this board who lives in a foreign country. I had to buy two movies too, but that was no real hardship.

Hey Ari, here's your next soon-to-be acquisition. The last four issues of EW that have King of Pop columns:

It looks like you may be missing issue #977, dated February 8, 2008. The column is "Pop Goes the Presidency."

I have a hard time keeping up with these myself. I wish there was a GOOD list that was updated in a timely manner. Sometimes by the time I hear of one it has already been removed from the magazine racks and the "new" one displayed.

Subscription copies also have mailing labels attached or printed on the front cover and, IMO, are not collectible. You also get many issues you don't want, i.e. those without the King column.

Lilja's website does a pretty good job of informing when a new column is available but he has been VERY spotty lately on that topic.

This arrived today:

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/1769/haventomgordondg7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This Haven Foundation The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300205844209) was on auction recently, and ended without meeting the $99 reserve.

I asked the seller if he would sell it to me at his reserve and he agreed.

While it is a 2nd printing (I believe all of TGWLTGs from Haven were 2nds) I still think it was a good price as it came with the original Haven receipt.

Yes, I did get one of these, but had to pay $10 for it on eBay. My comic store said they gave them all away about three weeks ago and would not get any more in, so I went to ebay and only found one person offering it.

This I got too, as well as the Jae Lee variant, at my comic store, but prices were even as bit higher than what I paid for the first arc issues. I keep telling myself I AM DONE, but keep going back to the well.

BTW, I have e-mailed Jae Lee three times since mid-December and have received no response. I have a few more comics and a couple items to get signed for Ari and I cannot get hold of the guy. Don't know what's up. I don't bug him and haven't done anything (that I know of) to receive the silent treatment. I even sent the last e-mail with a read receipt attached and it has gone unread for a month.

That means he's not checking, right?

For me don't worry Wiz! There's no rush at all :)

Ari-

That is correct. It may be that he has a new e-mail that he uses regularly but one that I am not aware of.

As long as I have the scanner out...

I picked up a couple of these free promotional magazines today at my local comic store. Has anyone else seen these?

Patrick-
Yes, I did get one of these, but had to pay $10 for it on eBay. My comic store said they gave them all away about three weeks ago and would not get any more in, so I went to ebay and only found one person offering it.
Aw, Wiz, sorry to hear you had to pay ten bucks, I would have gotten you one. Interestingly a couple weeks ago, my comic store didn't have them so I had no idea these existed until yesterday. Maybe I'll stop by today and pick up a couple more, there weren't many sitting out but he may have more in back. The nice thing is that he does seem to get a decent quantity of all the comic promo stuff.

Also I picked up the color variant for issue #1 of the new story arc. The price was reasonable (relative to what I was paying during the first arc timeframe), so I bought all three of his copies.

This I got too, as well as the Jae Lee variant, at my comic store, but prices were even as bit higher than what I paid for the first arc issues. I keep telling myself I AM DONE, but keep going back to the well.

Really? They're going for more than the first arc? I would have thought people would have a bit of a spending hangover and the prices would be lower. But I don't have the sketch variant and don't know have a feel for the market at all, I guess.

Perhaps Jae is just got busy with the holidays and is now buried in work projects. I find it hard to believe that you would have offended him, Wiz. He'll probably surface when his workload eases.

I bought the variant and sketch variant for The Long Road Home #1 for much less than I paid for any of the variants of Reborn! Otherwise I would have passed on it.

Granted, my store is here in NYC, but they charged $75 for the Jae Lee variant and $25 for the other.

This just came the other day. This book is big! and heavy. If you have the Centipede Press leather edition of 'SALEM'S LOT you know what I mean.

One of 22 deluxe editions of DRACULA by Centipede Press. It uses the illustrations by Greg Hildebrandt (always my favorite Dracula illustrations) from the 1985 Unicorn edition.

Jerad is just getting better and better. Really impressive reproduction of the illustrations, paper and printing quality, etc.

I collect different editions of DRACULA and this is right at the top of my list of favorites.

It is difficult to photograph the "silkscreen" illustration on the front board because of the glare.

That is a beautiful book! Congratulations.
Jerad at Centipede does some great stuff. I recently got the numbered edition of 'Shadow Of The Torturer' by Gene Wolfe from Centipede and it is a beautifully produced oversized book.

A couple other older comic books obtained recently. Not expensive, but they do include Stephen King.

WOW! :clap:nice book bob! is there anything you don't collect bob?

BEWARE!...PLOM (poor little ol me) rant to follow:
ah well... i'm having to go an a self imposed collecting fast myself for a while... again.... did so last year and got totally debt free...i'm still 100% debt free, but....
just got notified yesterday that the owner of the house i rent (for the past 6 years) plans to evict me, so they can tear down the house and build condos on the property. they wanted me out by the end of apil....but i said no way... so i have til the end of may.

aaaaarg! i hate this because i was only paying 595.00 a month in rent, and wasn't planning on moving until i could buy a house outright.... now i have to find a house to buy in less than 60 days.... and will have to finance part of it.
so i'm saving as much as i can to try to lower the payments. (not to mention the moving costs)
waaaah. no books for a while. it's going to be a hectic pain in the yaya to find, buy a house and move (all these books, oh my) to a new place in 60 days.
not to mention i have to devise a plan to move...2 trucks, 1 car, a harley + sidecar, 1 boat aa 5x8 trailor loaded with sound equipment, and a 18x 8 x 6ft dog kennel - all by myself.
my next new pride and joy shown here will be a house - if i live through it.

ok...i'm through stomping my foot.:onfire:
