January's been a good month for me! Today I stopped at the Strand, as I usually do Friday after work, and I picked up a copy of Dark Tower VII with what I think is a genuine King inscription. It was seating on the new arrivals case, half price $17.50.

What do you guys think? Is the sig good?

Yeah, it's great to find something special when you're not expecting it. Over the years at the Strand and other used bookstores in NYC I found some great bargains, like 2nd and 3rd printings of The Gunslinger, 2nd printing of the Drawing of the Three, 1sts of Wasteland and W&G, various proofs and a S/L of Fear Itself!

Sorry, if I am bragging.

Yeah, it really is a nice production. Heavier than I expected, I like the materials, marbled paper inside the traycase cover is a nice touch, but what I really like is the signature page artwork ... it is beautiful in hand, really captures the feeling of the book. This is my first McCammon S/L, and I'm pretty happy with it.

I shudder to think of the nightmare this would cause if I tried to rearrange my collection of King books into strict chronological order. I've got novels (but include Danse Macabre, On Writing, etc.) in chronological order. And I've got short fiction (anthologies, etc.) in chronological order but separate. And short non-fiction in chronological order but, again, separate. Just thinking of combining them into one continuous string of books makes my obsessive-compulsive disorder cringe.

The problem is less significant with just 1st US editions, gift editions and non signed limiteds on just the one bookcase.

Oh, I agree. And there are probably as many different ways to arrange a collection as there are collectors. What suits one collector doesn't appeal to others necessarily. I was just trying to visualize the time required and the end result if I was to do that with my collection.

It might not be possible since we don't always have accurate information on the actual release of the book.

I'd say that estimate is a bit on the low side. I know three of the owners of 1st state dust jacket copies and am pretty sure an offer of $25K would be declined. I can't speak for all, of course. Didn't David Aronovitz of Fine Books Company on ABE have one listed at $90K within the past year or so? I'm pretty sure Hutch turned down an offer of $40K several years ago. Times and the economy will have a lot to do with it but I doubt one could be bought very cheaply today.

If you really mean the first state dust jacket, the value is in the ten thousand dollar range. If you mean the second state dust jacket (with the price-clipped dust jacket and the $7.95 price) Merlin is in the ball park.

Ok, so I am just trying to learn as I have not any of this particular book yet. The first state was with the $8.95 price that was pulled and replaced with the $7.95 price thus very few out there. A true 1st is really the 2nd state dj right? BUT... there are a few people out there that have them with the 1st State. Is there a 3rd state? Sorry for the questions but I need to know what I should be looking for and what price range... thanks guys

The VERY rare first state dust jacket is the one with the $8.95 price and Father Cody mention. The second state (and seemingly more common) has the price clipped and a $7.95 price, still with the Father Cody reference. The scarcer third state has a $7.95 price and Father Callahan. All have the First Edition mention on the copyright page of the book.

(I don't know if the first state dust jacket was ever actually released.)

The way I understand about the first state dust jacket is that someone (Pete Schneider?) discovered them in the trash and recovered a few, thus was never "officially" released. The third state seems fairly scarce but is occasionally available. (I paid a little over $700 for my VG copy back in 2008 off eBay.)

carlosdetweiller
02-06-2014, 05:20 AM
As I understand the story the book was determined to be too expensive at $8.95. This was determined before the book was actually released. The dust jackets were altered to remove (price-clip) the $8.95 and reprice them at $7.95. According to Peter Schneider there were no books that left Doubleday with intact $8.95 "Father Cody" error dust jackets. Again according to Peter there were not even review copies sent out with the $8.95 price intact. The jackets had not even been put on the books yet when the price change was done.

Some years later Peter was going through some files in the art department at Doubleday and found a folder with "3 or 4" intact dust jackets. These were going to be thrown away (according to Peter) so he kept them as an oddity. These dust jackets are distinguished by having a vertical crease down the center of the spine, an $8.95 price on the inner dj flap and the error referencing Father Cody instead of Father Callahan.

I used to talk and e-mail with Peter frequently many years ago (before he seemingly dropped off the face of the earth) and he is pretty sure that the folder he found contained ""3 or 4" first state dust jackets. So there must be more to the story because I know of at least 6 examples of intact first state dust jackets in the hands of collectors. There are some (and mine is one of these) that have the vertical crease where the rear panel meets the spine rather than directly down the center of the spine. I do not know the source of these jackets unless Peter's memory is faulty and there were more dust jackets in the folder than he remembered.

There are a lot of fables surrounding these jackets. There is one where King (a relative unknown author at the time with little or no clout at Doubleday) was upset at the price of $8.95 and ordered all books to be returned to Doubleday for repricing. This fairy tale would leave room for some books to have escaped into the wild with $8.95 Father Cody intact dj's but is false.

Bob,
It never ceases to amaze me with regard to your wealth of knowledge and experience. I would like to suggest a new thread "Listen with Bob" where once a week you post a really cool item and discuss it's history

I know you have covered some things in your collection thread and other threads, but it would be nice to have them all in one place - plus I'm sure you have loads more :)

Also, the mistake on the inner flap of the dj referencing Father Cody instead of Callahan was known prior to the releasing of the books. Doubleday elected to send most of the books out anyway to keep to the scheduled publication date. The error was later corrected on the later dust jackets so some first edition copies went out later with corrected dj's. These copies have dj's with an unclipped inner flap showing a $7.95 price and the corrected text mentioning Father Callahan.

The three states of dust jackets could be classified as:

1. First printing, first state.........Unclipped inner flap, $8.95 price, Father Cody error

2. First printing, second state......Price clipped inner flap, repriced at $7.95, Father Cody error

3. Second printing.........Unclipped inner flap, $7.95 price, Father Cody error corrected to Father Callahan

Thanks for the positive comments. One further thought on an earlier question regarding the price of a F/F first edition copy of 'Salem's Lot. A lot of collectors define F/F as an as new copy that looks as though it was cherry picked from a retail bookstore recently. I have never seen a copy of that book that fits that description. The predominately black dj shows faults very easily and it doesn't take much to show up. Even the nicest of the dust jackets seem to show at least some wear at the corners and spine ends. Little edge tears are frequent and can often be hidden in the black background. The white rear panel shows soiling easily. In over 30 years of collecting I have never come across a "perfect" first edition of 'Salem's Lot. I've got some very, very nice ones but not that perfect copy. In contrast I have seen many copies of Carrie and The Stand that look and feel as new. The price of such a book, if one ever was offered for sale, would probably be really, really high.

A couple of years ago a dealer contacted me with a buyer who wanted a F/F copy of 'Salem's Lot. I had a copy (my second nicest) with just tiny spots of white showing at the corners of the dj and no tears. It was a beauty. I didn't really want to sell it but I e-mailed pictures and said I wanted $2500 for it. I was surprised (and a little disappointed) when it was accepted. So with that as a starting point one can only wonder what that perfect, as new copy could sell for.

The copies that we see changing hands for $400 to $800 on occasion are far from superior examples. The stellar copies are few and far between and, likely, priced accordingly.

Wow, can we start this tread? I really enjoyed reading all that! haha I did also ready somewhere that King was unhappy with the price and ordered them sent back thus a few escaped... but... as you know, this was a long time ago and it may or may not be true. Very cool reading what you wrote Bob.. I was fascinated by this. Here is another question for you... if your so inclined. Is it true that a lettered Firestarter burned in a fire? And now there is one less out there?

Regarding my description of F/F in an earlier post: The description of F/F being as new is not one used by long time established and reputable antiquarian booksellers. Their description is somewhat less rigid. But we King collectors can be of a different breed than other collectors.

In his book Discovering Stephen King (Starmont House, Inc., 1985) Darrell Schweitzer quotes L. W. Currey who wittily observed that there is now a state beyond fine in book gradations: "Never read and wrapped in plastic by a Stephen King collector."

LOL - it's good to know we only want the best!

My preferred version of grading above fine/fine (especially for an older book) would be MINT

Last weeks I finally organized my collection and decided to focus it (or at least try...). Since I'm trying to get all the first publications of his works, I jumped on the easier ones that somehow I didn't buy before. So here are the first ones that arrived, plus the old Christine DJ (I replaced it with a brand new one) and my copy of Pet Sematary Anniversary.

Wonder if the insurance will work (if the book was insured)...
Will probably sue the publisher or the government because asbestos is supposed to resist to fire, isnt it?

It's never been confirmed that a lettered "Firestarter" book burned.
Why sue the publisher or "the government"?
The DJ of the book was "supposed" be be made of asbestos and other materials. Asbestos itself doesn't easily burn (that's why it was used in brake pads).
The significant problem with asbestos is inhaling the fibers, not using the finished product (brake pads, shingles etc.)

I would put it about where you do... I hold matching set DT as the number one King item to have even though there area roughly 65 sets of those (more than a 1st state dj or Firestarter) as those are my favorite books he has written but it is different for everyone. If that happens (kitchen) ... PM me... depending on time line... I could be interested. thanks!

I guess it's Print-On-Demand. The seller takes the order and sends it to the printer who ships it to the buyer. A lot of sellers on ebay and ABE doing that.

The big question for collectors, if a book is Print-on-Demand only, what's a first edition, first printing?

Let's assume King decides to have an upcoming book Print-On-Demand. What's the first printing? Is the book that's printed on Tuesday more desirable than the book that was printed on Wednesday?

I bought a COTW today inscribed & dated month of publication,
Here's the info I received

Stephen King gifted this first edition book to then Senator William S Cohen when it was first published. Senator Cohen was building a small library at the time. When Cohen eventually became Secretary of Defense in 1997, he moved his library of approximately 10,000 books to his office in the Pentagon where his administrative staff catalogued and tagged all his books. When he left office in early 2001, he gave some of his books to his staff. http://imageshack.com/a/img35/5505/25y6.jpg
S/L signature from my COTW seems the same

$150 plus tax & shipping = $169

I've seen them go for more and I've seen most people ask as much as $250 for the set.

Today Joyland Lettered Edition arrived,
This book was my first S/L so when I was able to get a copy the Publisher had left over for $215.00 with shipping I had to take advantage. I purchased a few Gift editions this past Fall 1 had a flawed dust jacket, in my emails with them about replacing it I asked about any PC copies left over I was told there was none but they only listed 25 of the 26 copies for sale last year incase of shipping issues. Since they had no issues they replaced the dust jacket & offered this remaining copy to me at issue price, I could not be more excited!
Also picked up a 2nd Salem's Lot S/L & Gift Edition

I am going to order a few more from him for a few other books, if the price is right. Quality is good, not as nice as The Collector's though.

I ordered one from him ages ago for a signed Night Shift.
I really liked the materials he used but wasnt pleased with the fit so didnt order from again.

I thought I had seen it before, but I have now found the picture I was refering too. It is a totally different edition, which has much the same signatures...
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/563/sig_moth_006.jpg

What different edition is it? And is it owned by someone here?

Not a different edition of the book, just a different copy of Moth. Mine is also signed by almost all contributors and was presented to Jim Bishop as a gift just after publication. I purchased my copy from Jim Bishop along with his copy of Long Walk that King inscribed to him. Most likely the copy Bob purchased was also a gift for either one of the contributors or perhaps one of the English teachers right after publication.

After some months I finally got caught up with this thread. Lots of great new acquisitions (some amazing ones), a few new members, and very informative history. Congratulations on the new stuff everyone. Welcome new members! And appreciate the educational history.

Big thanks to Betts Books for the Whelan Signature on Gunslinger 1st/1st. This book has an official history all its own. I purchased it unsigned years ago while working on completing my first edition collection. Then dragged it around with me for years to every King signing I went to (including RBR event) but for some reason could not or did not get it signed (and happy I didnt get it signed at the RBR event. Don't want a sharpie on this one). Finally got it signed in Canada last year and now got it signed by Michael Whelan. The book has done more traveling than most people I know...

Ooh, nice. Are those one of a kind? I wouldn't mind getting something like those for my Bachmans and F&SF sets.

They are made by a guy in the UK called Jeff Whiley (jeffrey.whiley@ntlworld.com) he makes them to order. You just give him the size and colour and what stamp you require (he has a selection). You can also have a bespoke stamp made, but that costs a little more. Prices are very reasonable.

Very nice acquisitions, congrats!! Is that one of the limited metal cases, RF was able to secure awhile back? The one's with the optional "slide", though not this particular one, that there was an exclusively limited amount to be had? I could be off base, but it does remind me of those. The machined aluminum cases for The Gunslinger were a one-time production. Cook was the brilliance behind the design and manufacturing of the cases. Garrell did the artwork. Only a "handful" (I know, I know, that drives Bob crazy-let's say 6) were done. I still have one.

So there is at least 1 proof out there. I would guess that Bev already has one too.
Anyone else? Mike? Bob? John?

Years ago I tried to get in touch with the right person at Scribner (whoever that may be) so I could get proofs for reviewing purposes as well. I wanted to use them to write reviews for the Dutch SK Fan Club website/newsletter (and keeping them for my collection would have been a nice bonus). But I never got any reply.

Quite similar for me. I tried a few times over the years and then I just gave up.
I think that we are from the wrong side of the pond ;-)

Not me. I just got a Doctor Sleep proof last week so I am several months behind.

Where can we buy one of the traycases for The Gunslinger? That is so cool looking and what is the price of one. Excuse me if you have already put this in here somewhere but where can we find one?

What is most likely the final S/L from Richard Matheson. You will notice the limitation page is different from the name of the book. I received the following email from Barry Hoffman at Gauntlet Press.

Richard passed away before he could "initial" the tipsheets for the book. So, we used a tipsheet from another book and as a bonus you get his full signature rather than just his initials. The number is correct. These were extra tipsheets from the other book. We numbered them 1-100 (that's the reason for the low print run for this edition). The value, if anything, is enhanced because you got a Matheson signature not just his initials like with OTHER KINGDOMS. Matheson had a severe write condition the past few years so he would only initial the numbered editions.

I have been looking for this little journal for many years (at least 10) and this is the first one I have found. Yes it has coffee stains, a sticker remnant and some writing on the cover. I wish it were in better condition but I am thrilled to have a copy in any condition at all. DREAMWORKS: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, Volume 1, Number 4, Summer 1981. This particular issue deals with nightmares and King contributed a short essay on a recurring dream that he has.

I don't know what it is sometimes. I don't think this is particularly rare and it seems every other issue of this journal is available for sale. It wasn't expensive and, now that I have one, they'll probably start popping up all over the place. But, for whatever reason, I never could seem to find one. Really happy to have one even in lesser condition.
