finally snagged a UTD softcover proof - it's the UK #'d version; had to pay premium for it... but i haven't seen the soft covers on the market.
still need the US softcover proof though

and still need that damned cell proof.... waaaah

By the way, Shibus had a UK UTD proof on eBay not too long ago... and there was one at Bett's (is that the one you got?). And I think there was another on eBay a couple of months ago. But other than those, I haven't seen any either. The US ones seem to have dissappeared completely...

I think the US Under the Dome softcover proof will prove to be VERY scarce--otherwise, why would the publisher have sent out those hardcover advance copies?

No, Terry, you still can't have my Cell proof! :P

By the way, congratulations of the UK proof! Which number did you get? I have #143 of the 200.

Ha!ha!. yeah, the description is funny. I have debated on buying the Stephen King book alone as I've seen it sold seperately. But having the set seems much more complete as it was issued together.

Can I read German, you ask? Nein. But aren't these absolutely stunning!!!?? My new P&J  - the Metallic German versions of DTII - VII and Robin Furth's Concordance Vol 2 (also metallic, but it's a paperback and doesn't shine as pretty). Concordance Vol 1 was apparently confiscated by customs or something since it wasn't in the box. The seller and I are emailing about it now, but I couldn't wait to show these to you.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/Stephen%20King%20Collection/I%20-%20Miscellaneous/DTGerMetal.jpg

And the box they came in (sheesh!). Not only was it apparently opened and resealed, but there was absolutely NO packing or wrapping of any kind around these books! I'm actually amazed they arrived as unscathed as they did, and extremely happy that VI and VII were still in shrinkwrap, although the corners and edges still got dinged a little.

03-23-2010, 06:26 AM
Gretchen, my guess is customs (either German or US) opened the box to see what was inside and didn't bother putting back the packaging material.

I'm just guessing, but I've had packages sent from other countries opened by customs before, and in their opinion they don't give a crap about trying to repackage the box. They always arrive like crap. But I will say it's never been as ugly as yours. But the books are ok, that's all that matters. :)

All the sketches I have seen have been similar/identical to yours.

The only difference that I have found out was the backing paper color of the sketch. Nice acquisition!.

Just got this and I'm pretty excited about it. Not sure if the spotting and fading problems only affected the unsigned editions but this DJ is mint:

Does anyone know if the sketch was similar for all of the collectors copy?

Only 1-100 came with the print. For the most part, the original drawings are similar with subtle differences.

FSMDR is correct......the background sheet the original is placed on might be different. My copy is on a tan page.

A nice pickup....congrats.

surly-

quite a nice acquisition. Perhaps I missed it...about what did you pay for that copy?

03-26-2010, 06:49 AM
Ah, the sordid topic of coin.
I'm sure I over-paid but I really, really wanted one. The asking was $3,000 and we settled on $2,700.
My budget was $2,000 but they don't come up very often, so I just sucked it up and went for it.

Things have a way of balancing out though, because I found a lettered Regulators -- never opened out of the shipping box -- for $3,000 even. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

Did you open it? If so, what letter did you get?

Personally, I don't think you overpaid for the Cycle S/L.

Of course! I'm not a 'keep it in the box/shrink wrap' kinda guy. It was letter Y. I forget who the check was made out to, but I'll look tonight when I'm home.

I hope I didn't over pay, but I try not to think about it too much -- it takes the 'joy' out of 'pride and joy'.

jhanic

Surly, I don't think you overpaid too badly, if at all, for the Cycle of the Werewolf, and you most definitely did NOT overpay for the Regulators. Good buys!

Of course! It was letter Y.

Thanks for checking. I'm looking for copy "C". I've seen a lot of these books change hands over the years but have not come across "C". I've got a matching set of Charnel House books all with letter "C". THE REGULATORS is not technically a Charnel House book but it was designed by Joe Stefko and I would like to get it to enhance the set. The search continues.

:orely: Well, I've scanned all three backups. I know I had the complete list.

It showed all

500 numbers with who the check was made out
26 lettered with who the check was made out
30(I think it was 30) PC copies with who the check was made out

I won't give up. Unfortunately I can't remember where I got the list. Barry Levin I think or it might have been Stu when he ran Betts.

It was a newsletter that Beahm put out irregularly to keep fans up to date on Stephen King news. I may have my time lines out of whack a bit but I believe George did it to fill the void when Castle Rock ceased publication. Many issues were quite good and informative. I've still got my complete set. I'll dig them out in the next few days and provide more info if people are interested.

I've been looking for a decent copy of this TV Guide for quite a while. It is the July 13, 1968 issue. It's got an address label but otherwise is in fine condition and I'm really happy with it. Why do I want it? It has a letter by a 20 year old Stephen King in it responding to a report on TV violence. Now how cool is that?

It's much harder for Bob, than anyone else on here, to get something missing from their collection, as he has so much already. The missing items will very rarely, if ever, become available.

This particular item is described in Brook's Bibliography as:
C9. The Fight About Violence
A letter to the editor regarding violence on television
1. TV Guide [July 13-19, 1968] [several editions]

How feasible would it be to publish in a book or a series of books (like what's been done with HP Lovecraft's essays) a truly complete collection of King's miscellaneous non-book non-fictional writings? That would have to be undertaken when King is sadly no longer with us, because he never seems to cease writing something somewhere, mainly in Entertainment Weekly now. But I believe such a collection would be a hugely important publication.

Justin Brooks' Bibliography has sections for Books, Short Fiction, Short Non-Fiction, Poetry, Puzzles, Recipes and Screenplays.

There is a second heading for Unpublished Works that has the same subsections.

There are two addenda, so far.

It is unbelievably complete but additions continue to be made. This is what you are talking about, right?

You don't see those around much anymore. When they closed the restaurant in 1998 they sold several of the menus and other things on eBay.

Those folder type things seem to have been used for special dinners and catering. At least that is what is in mine.

There was a more permanent menu that had a leatherette feel to it and brass or metal corners applied to the page corners. Here is one on the left. It was 10 pages with 6 pages being just wine choices. Two pages for lunch and two pages for dinner. It seemed to aspire to be a pretty high end dining establishment. I have no idea why it folded except that seems to happen to new restaurants/business quite a lot.

Damn! I don't have a coffee mug, though.

Well, it doesn't look like much....just a stack of old newspapers....but this is a major addition to my collection. I think this is about as complete a collection of Maine Campus newspapers with the column "King's Garbage Truck" as I'll ever find.

I'm going to have to go through and read and catalog each one but I think this represents all of the issues with King writing except for the issues from the summer sessions of 1969 and 1970, when it was called the Summer Campus.

In all King wrote 47 "King's Garbage Truck" columns and I think there are 38 here (missing only the 9 issues from summer 1969). Plus there are some issues with photos of King and some with letters to the editor type writing and a few duplicates.

I'm going to have a fantastic time going through and cataloging each issue. Truly a labor of love. This is about as good as it gets for me and my King collection.

Many thanks to wizardsrainbow at Betts who was instrumental in getting this whole deal together. I'm forever grateful, David.

I assume that because there are less students in a typical summer session they printed fewer copies of the newspaper. I, too, have bound sets of the newspapers but no summer issues.

Do you mean to say you have a bound set of an entire summer session? Or just a single summer issue? Does it have "Slade" or "King's Garbage Truck" in it?

It's probably safe to say that Bob has more King items than King himself - didn't I read an interview with Stu where he said that SK once bought four complete first-edition sets from Bett's for him and his family? Apparently King never really bothered with maintaining an extensive library of his own work in its various incarnations (trades, limiteds, magazines, anthologies etcetera)...

Not a big story here, but I was contacted out of the blue by another CT resident who told me that he went to college with King and that he had kept all of the campus newspapers while he was there. He thought he had a complete set of King's Garbage truck and wanted to know what the value of his set was worth. While I know of the papers and Steve's periodic writing in various issues, I had no clue as to value. So I approached 2 of the biggest collectors for advice. The seller made a list of all the issues that had King's Garbage Truck in them. I shot this list off to Bob and he helped me on pricing and also expressed an interest in the papers for himself. I then negotiated the pricing from middle ground to the satisfaction of both parties. In the end, the seller found he had 2 copies of an issue that showed the Kent State march held at the Maine university campus with Steve prominently featured near the frront of the march. Bob said he had not seen that picture before so he got that issue as well. Bob was also most gentlemanly in compensating me for my "brokering" of the deal and for driving to pick up the issues for him.

Many thanks.
