Anybody own MY PRETTY PONY S/L and can look at my lastest purchase. MY PRETTY PONY. I can text you pictures if you PM your cell phone #. When I open the metal cover, it looks like page separation from the Cover and the first page. Not sure what it supposed to look like. I will eventually get my wife to post pictures here, but I wanted to get back to the seller sooner than later.

Thanks for any help!

Does anyone know if Justin Brooks will ever update the 2013 edition of his bibliography?

(I know Justin is a member here but I'm not sure how often he logs in these days)

He updates it for himself, so the question is whether or not it will be publicly released at some point.

I think it is up to us collectors to let him now we want an updated version. If there is no demand, he will not bother.

If you like it buy it. Glenn Chadbourne tends to be a bit "Marmite". Love him or hate him. No inbetween.

I think some of the covers are pretty cool and I have a few. I believe he'll do the Remarque of your choice as well but, you could cut out the middle man and send the book directly to him for the Remarque.

Look at the Viking logo print, and the Viking ship. They are not grainy, yet the signature is. A free flowing ink pen signature does not look grainy (Except under extreme magnification).

I would need to examine the book in person, but I don't feel comfortable with what I see.

So some of you may have seen these over on FB. I’m posting here to expand my pool of opinions. I have also included a new extreme close up that i didnt put on FB. I have no provenence as this was picked up at an “estate sale”. So far no one has argued that this isnt a sig approriate to the time. I have compared it to my own collection, with two sigs signed in front of me, 6 months before this one and it compares favorably, in my opinion. The sticking point seems to be whether or not it was a Xerox copy (which i agree, it could be) or if it is an autopen using a sig from that time period. And so, i present...

A high percentage of signed scripts turn out to be fake. That alone would make me approach with caution. Plus Kings feelings about the movie are well documented, which makes it further suspect. Even if i put all that aside, 'King' looks off to me and i would not want it in my collection.

Mr. Rabbit Trick

Not even close to how a script for that film looked like. Doesn't even have a production company on it and they produce the scripts.

King hated Kubrick's version so bad, he made his own, from his own script, so I don't think he would ever sign a Kubrick one.

Is a WHSmith purple edition less more or less desirable if the sticker has been removed from the DJ?

It came with the sticker as published. I would say it should have the sticker. If not, it could be worth less, but that's subjective. Some people wouldn't care.

Personally, I remove the publisher's sticker, cover the jacket in a Brodart and place the sticker on the Brodart. That way it isn't on the jacket where it could potentially cause damage, but it's still present with the book.

This probably isn't the right place to ask but with the acquisition of two bookcases; I was thinking of displaying them in the dining room. The room gets plenty of natural light but no direct sunlight. Are DJs prone to spine fade even when not in direct sunlight? Thanks!

biomieg
09-25-2018, 01:25 AM
I think that depends on the book itself. Personally I've had all my King books in our living room in our previous place for several years. Plenty of natural light (not directly on the books but ambient if that is the right word) and I never had any problems. I did however place some of the books that I know are very susceptible to spine fading with the spine facing inwards (UK Dead Zone, US 'Salem's Lot, COTW for example). Generally speaking the red hues are most susceptible to fading but it also depends on the quality of the DJ. I think you should be careful with older books but the newer ones? I don't know.

Is it that the red hues are more susceptible or that fading is more noticeable with those colors? I always thought all books/DJs/colors could fade with sun bleaching.

All colors can fade I guess (although I've never seen black on a DJ fade but that isn't technically a color ) but the reds are the first to go, AFAIK.

My office doesn't get direct light any time of day but I still was worried so I just put Gila UV film on the windows. It's knocks out 95% of UV light which is what fades them. It's not cheap ($30 a roll) but it's worth the peace of mind (and it adds privacy)

Signed copies given out on tour (which are no different to King signing a book on his way to a car) are very different to a limited number of signed books with a specific bookplate. I see this copy is more akin to the Folio Society Shining or even the Hodder limiteds.

The books given out on the tour are closer to this book then a book signed on the way to his car. Although there is no bookplate, it was still given a "limitation" of 400 per event, and there was a limited number of events. Both were given to random patrons of the store/event. I suspect the bookplates are all in a normal trade hardcover. Do we even know if they are all 1st/1st's? This was done after publication and not published as a signed limited, but rather are normal books enhanced by a signature on a bookplate.

Yes, I see your points. My analogy with a signed book on the way to his car is really to say, those signed Sleeping Beauties would be indistinguishable from those signed by King and King on the way to their car (there’s no limitation page, etc). And whether this is a first or not doesn’t detract from whether it could be a limited. But you’re right - there’s still a lot to verify, including whether it’s actually a real sig (and not a facsimile), etc etc. But yes, there’s some good discussion to be had with this book if we can discover some more info. I’ve been able to find nothing online.

After speaking with the seller and doing some research I believe this is be real. From the seller:

“The Booksmith was a locally owned business....a popular bookstore here until its closing. Tom Clancy would always do his first book signings there for luck, since they originally let him do a signing for Hunt for Red October when he was a totally unknown author (the original was published by The Naval Press). Sub Base is just across the river in Groton CT. Here's a link nice article about it .....https://www.theday.com/article/20131002/nws13/131009933
Another interesting Booksmith fact is the owner had Hasbro Toys make a limited edition USS Connecticut GI Joe which was sold in his store. Hasbro is about an hour away in Rhode Island. (See pic below). It was a great place but ultimately could not compete when Borders came to town.
For this book, The owner wanted to do a special raffle to be drawn at 12:04 AM on the day of the books release. He contacted King who agreed to sign the 25 custom bookplates for the drawing. According to the owner King thought the middle of the night raffle was a cool idea. I was one of the 25 winners.
This is a first edition, I will post some pics of the copyright and jacket flap later today.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Alan”

I asked for a ton more questions and won it for $315!

Does anyone know whether the Collector’s slipcase for Joyland will fit the illustrated edition of the book? I’m not sure how much width the extra illustrations add to the book’s dimensions.

Thank you!

Two parts :)
One of my friends has a friend(who's on first) that received a copy of Elevation that was missing a whole section of pages. Anyone else run into this? I wonder if there are more out there in the wild? I suggest everyone double check their books if they haven't already.

Random, curious question: which do you guys think would be more valuable? A later print yet signed Outsider or a possible first but maybe a later print Elevation also signed. I know anything other than a first printing is not considered as valuable but since neither of these books had an official signing I would imagine either would hold some value.

Does your friends friend know the page numbers missing? My own personal opinion is that only the 1st holds value. I personally collect any signed copies. But don’t expect much on resale except for the firsts.

There are a few outsiders and tons of paperbacks on eBay that are not selling. I offered $150 for the outsider. Just because I need it to complete my Hodges set, Trying to complete 4 sets for nephews and nieces

Same for me. Seemed just right. I can’t check right now but maybe it’s a little snug with Brodart. If that’s the case, the Brodart is probably not on tight enough.

It means it's the first printing of a new edition of a book. So, for example, the illustrated edition of 'Salem's Lot would be a First Edition Thus, but clearly not a first edition of 'Salem's Lot. Even a paperback edition could be labeled thus, since it is a different format than the original hardcover.

In my opinion, that would still put it flat signed. Inscribed are to specific people IMHO. I have at least 3 in that category. I have 5 flat signed, including a proof. I don't think mine have dates though.

So I just purchased Stephen King's Battleground S/L from Gauntlet press. When I got it yesterday I noticed the number was missing, so I contacted Barry at Gauntlet and he said he forgot in his haste. He said to print "111" in blue or black ink.

If I do this, would this be something I need to disclose if/when I sell it?

I am surprised they have not sold out a print run of only 125 after all these years. (BTW, this is not listed in the catalog, only the Lettered is listed).

When SIX STORIES was announced as a paperback original, Stu Tinker, then proprietor of Betts, arranged for custom aftermarket slip cases and tray cases. It's hard to imagine now, but there was a lot of controversy about the asking price of ~$40. People were so vocal with their dismay that it eventually cause Stu to withdraw from the King online newsgroups of the time. If you're interested, you can probably do a search here and find more of the story.
That's just a long way of saying that i pre-ordered mine directly from Stu as part of the original offering when it was first announced, and mine is the darker exterior with the white felt interior.

I’m very familiar with the story and that’s the info I was after.... when you bought from Stu... what did you get. Looks like the black felt ones are knock offs. The writing isn’t as nice on the case and the material is not either. You can see/feel the difference but only if you had them side by side.

It seems everyone that ordered direct so far that I have talked to got white. The case is MUCH nicer too than the one with the black. I, at first thought maybe it was that the higher end case went to the Roman ones.... but doesnt seem so...

I just spoke with Stu. He recalls some people unhappy with the $40 price for the tray cases, but said everyone that bought one was happy. So happy that using the same vendor, he ordered a second batch. The second batch had the black liner. Stu says he himself (nor any buyers) noticed the second run to be "inferior" to the initial run, and that they too quickly sold out. He also reminded me that he also had a batch of slipcases produced.

There is a definite difference between the two with the initial run being of a much higher quality. I have both in front of me and it is clear which one is better. Thanks for the info though that’s good to know!

Just out of curiosity, anyone have any idea what the MR. MERCEDES umbrella promo is worth now?

Which one?

The one from The Netherlands or the Korean one? (Or perhaps a different one?)

The Korean one is virtually priceless since they have proven unattainable.

As for The Netherlands umbrella, I haven't seen any sales since RF sold one almost two years ago for $60. (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?20927-Randall-Flagg-Remodel-Deals&p=1052357&viewfull=1#post1052357)

I bought one of the umbrellas from The Netherlands. Thanks again Niels and Dez!!!

Mine isn't for sale. If I considered selling it, I wouldn't accept less than $100. I think I'd try for $150.

ur2ndbiggestfan

The Netherlands one. I bought it from Niels and Dez also, and I've never opened it. I hear that's bad luck.

If I knew there was a Korean one, I've totally forgotten about it.

Thanks for the info Jerome and Brian!

I use the archival covers. (http://www.shopbrodart.com/Library-Supplies/Book-Jacket-Covers/Archival-Covers/Fold-On-Archival/Fold-On-Archival-Sheets/_/Brodart-Fold-On-Archival-Book-Jacket-Cover-Sheets/?q=%250910426005)

You can select your height and length. They come 8" to 12" with varying lengths.

I get the 10" height and 23" length. They'll fit 9.5" tall King books and most others. I cut the length to fit smaller books.

That cover looks really cool. I mean, I know it says first ed, but is it really a 1983 book with a new cover?
It says Copy Right 1983 by Stephen King then it says
Introduction 2001 by Stephen King and then it says
First Scribner edition Hardback edition 2018 with a full number line. So it's not not the original re-done right?
By original I mean "oh look, there are a pile of first ed, let's put them out for the movie".
Still cool though.

I'm talking about sometimes when you have the fold at the top. It Mylar may fold a little but and bubble up and not be perfectly aligned with the jacket. There was a discussion of rebounds in the Current Value thread and it made me remember something I hadn't thought of in some time. Im foggy on the specifics, but a while back when I was still a novice collector and hadn't found my way here yet (so it must have been 15 or more years ago) I saw an oddity on ebay and at the time i didn't know what it was and spent considerable effort trying figure out if it was legit. I now recognize it to likely have been a nicely done BACHMAN BOOKS rebound with a tipped in signature page from one of the FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION signed editions. There might have even been more than one copy, or maybe it just got relisted a couple of times - I was still working on navigating ebay at the time as well. Anyhow, my question is: does anyone know what i am talking about, and might someone actually have a copy that would be willing to share pictures. With all the time that has passed, i am wondering if it is as nice as I remember it being.

Didn’t the Overlook Connection do it? (I’m just going by a likely faulty memory here and currently have no way to check it)

Backtracking this conversation a bit - I bought the Brodart book jacket covers discussed earlier in this thread, specifically the 10"x24" "exact fit book jacket covers" , however it seems all my hard covers are actually 9.5" tall, meaning I'm left with 1/2" of white cover visible along the top (or bottom edge). Those who use the 10" exact fit, are you using a bone folder to crease the excess back on itself?

Yes. Lay the cover face down. Slide the dustjacket up to fit tightly withing the top fold of the cover. Fold the bottom edge of the cover to match the bottom edge of the dustjacket. You can even let the dustjacket curl slightly to make sure it's tight. Hold what you have and use a bone folder to crease the cover to the dustjacket size from center to each edge.

Having all kinds of books with different heights; I decided to go with several different sizes exact fit covers. It's worked well for me with nearly over 70 books completed over the last couple of weekends. It was a little bit of a learning curve but I do it exactly as Brian described.

Also, having never removed the jackets before, I discovered how beautiful most of the books are underneath. It has made me wish those types of books had no cover at all.

I think I've got it, it's all pretty straight forward but there seem to be little tricks that help - such as using the bone folder to go from the middle out. I still find that I end up with 1/16th or 1/8th of white visible on the top edge that I can't seem to get rid of. It's hard to get the dustjacket to sit firmly into the crease of the top of the Brodart on both sides, you tuck one edge in and the other inevitably pops out a smidge. I know I'm being picky, but I do find it actively frustrating.

I'm also noticing that sometimes there's...a tension on the brodart sleeve after wrapping? The dust jacket isn't curling or warped, but the Brodart itself seems like it's sometimes a bit...off? Hard to explain without photos.

There shouldn't be any white visible at all. I get it as snug as I can on the top, turn it over, and fold and crease the bottom over first. Then I flip it back over to the top, snug it up again, and crease it on the top.

No, there shouldn't be any white at the top. Place the dustjacket fully into the top edge of the cover. If you do so, there will be no white showing there. When I pull the cover up to create the bottom fold, I pull with both hands upward and create enough tension that the dustjacket just starts to curl up. I then hold that with one hand at the center. I use the bone folder from the center to each edge to crease the cover.

So a tight tuck, a slight curl and a hard crease is all it takes. :wtf:

Hi,

This was the first sl I ever bought (from Calla Wolf) and in my browsing of all things King have seen, numbered edition and lettered edition.

I recently viewed a pic of a pc copy.

But I have also come across a different edition, that seems to be signed by all contributors, but instead of the ‘ this is the numbered edition, number 1 of 500, it states

‘This first edition of Quietly Now has been bound and printed for Melissa Singer’

Does anyone know of this type of copy, and if so, where does it sit in terms of rarity/value in comparison to the lettered and numbered versions?

I may look at buying one of these depending on thoughts.

Thanks.

Maybe, the image shows the same signature sheet as the numbered version, and the writing is in the same font.

My Manuscript Wish List Favorite
I often refer to myself as an “editor of all work,” meaning that I edit many genres, from horror and urban fantasy to mystery and thriller, to contemporary and commercial historical fiction.

My tastes are broad within genre as well; for instance, in horror, I edited Brian Lumley’s visceral Necroscope series as well as Ramsey Campbell’s emotionally intense The Darkest Part of the Woods. Works on my list feature sympathetic vampires, like Chelsea Quinn Yarbro’s legendary Saint-Germain, as well as blood-sucking menaces like those in Cat Adams’s Blood Singer novels. For me, horror and urban fantasy are closely related and I’m always looking for exciting, frightening, and unsettling books. In horror and UF, I’m also looking for a variety of settings and time-periods.

In thriller, my weakness is disaster stories. Too many Irwin Allen disaster movies in my youth, I guess. The disaster can be man-made or natural: floods, fires, deadly diseases, sinking ships, plane crashes, technology run amok, etc. I like disaster-in-motion as well as stories of investigations into causes and general villainy.

In mystery and suspense, I like procedurals a lot. Family suspense is good too, as are intelligent gothics. Female protagonists are a plus but not a requirement.

As for women’s fiction, I’m looking for works with older protagonists (anywhere from 35 up); stories of long-range relationships, of self-discovery (which can happen at any age), of coping with what life throws at you and thriving. I’m also interested in stories of people in their late teens and early twenties, who are figuring out what’s next after high school and starting to live in the wider world, whether they are in college or not. In terms of historical fiction, almost any period is fair game, and I’m also looking for non-Western cultures. I’m interested in contemporary immigration stories as well as historical ones and novels about POC in 20th and 21st century America. Caveat: if a work is set in a popular time period, like WWII or the Ellis Island immigration period, I will expect it to be something different or told from an unusual point of view.

I’d love to see more novels that reflect the present and past diversity of the world. Life is full of fascinating stories—as one of those native New Yorkers who loves striking up conversations with total strangers, I hear them all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought, “that would make a great book!” That’s what I look for most in submissions—a story more people should know, characters more people should meet.

I'm guessing it's a Association/Publisher's copy but they might have had the names printed instead of a generic PC line.

As far as I have found out, this is an association copy. Sometimes, people who worked on the S/L at the publisher will receive these personalized editions. Technically that makes it a 1/1 and thus "extremely limited" seeing as it's the only one of its kind. But the general consensus seems to be that they are valued like PC copies. If you're into that sort of thing, then it can be a really cool piece. But most collectors don't seem to want much to do with them. Again, this is just what I've heard from other groups.

Thanks, I contacted the seller I thought was associated to the pic, and they cannot find it. I quite like the thought of this type of version. Imagine a signed with all those names and your name printed at the bottom. Wow.

I would have had to change my name to Melissa though!! Lol

To return to this topic briefly, I use four small clips to hold the jacket in the cover while I fold the opposite edge to size. The clips don't damage the cover or jacket at all, if you're careful.
