My newest non-King signed limited slipcased Pride & Joy from Subterranean Press arrived today. Signed by Jack Vance and 24 others, including Neil Gaiman, Dan Simmons and Dean Koontz.

My copy arrived today (#93). I agree - it's a beautiful book. I opened it up to look at it, and before I knew it, I'd read two stories. Looking forward to reading the rest.

Regards, DavidK

Yours must have been boxed up right before mine as I received #94.

I have read a couple stories in the book as well (I have an ARC). It's very good!

And this one I think turtlex will covet!

A Robin Furth inscribed Treachery graphic novel. The alteration in the "Gunslinger Creed" was one that I couldn't pass up.

ok.... back to this...

the drum.. "replicas" .... these are being mass produced and sent with the book?

is this a complete newsletter of the drum?
It seems to be a complete replica.
I just peeked, removed and shot a pick.

so that is not the code name mousetrap - which one is it?

my problems with the replicas is... down the road, how many of these are going to be passed off as original later on on ebay.
when owners of the originals paid many hundreds for theirs, these replicas can definitely possibly dilute the marketabilty and validity of those originals.

add in the fact that unless there was expressed permission from king to make the replicas, i assume there might be some legal issues with copying and selling them... not sure on that though.

hey wiz. congrads on the zippered skeleton crew.... it's a pretty sweet book ain't it.

I sort of agree...I mean, it's awesome to read them, but I wonder if just printing them in book form might have been the better bet? I mean - those look amazing! But maybe too much so?

I dunno...probably not a problem, but it might create some fakery down the road...or, just being paranoid.

Great book, though - that's undeniable!

I think its a valid concern, assuming theres no differentiating details between the original and these facsimiles. For instance, Bob's letter thats reproduced there - if one shows up on eBay, what recourse does he have? He can try to get it pulled because he owns the original.... but to a third party like eBay, how to you tell which is the original? It could get messy, and will likely dilute the market for those rarities.

The reproductions of The Drum and Comics Review are significantly smaller than the originals. Also, the only pages reproduced are the front page and the pages containing King's stories. The rest of the pages were not reproduced. I don't think any of these concerns about forgeries are valid, IMO.

Mr. Rabbit Trick
10-14-2009, 07:34 AM
I still think the concers are a "little" valid.

I can blank out the REPRODUCTION word and photocopy it at at 105%, which gives me a facsimile which is nearer to the original.

(Good enough to fool ebayers, if someone was so inclined).

Ari_Racing

Actually...forgeries of these seem to be as easy as to make more 1st Salem's Lot DJ, and I think you don't see them.

the fact that not all the pages were reproduced does ease my mind/concerns a bit... and i'm glad to hear that fact. (i haven't yet got the book myself... but plan to this week)

but...
since you and i and only a couple of others know about those pages and what they actually contain(in my case the code named mousetrap version)... i can see rabbit trick's scenerio coming around and unsuspecting buyers getting taken.
kind of like all those faked "original" signed scripts that are so abundant on ebay.

so folks - just be sure to check with bob before you plop down large monies for "originals" of these - otherwise you might end up a sad little camper.

not quite as easy....

there are not thousand of fascimile copies of the 1st salem's lots out there...
and since these early works by king were not professionally produce book covers, but simply low tech high school produced quality - they'd be much easier to photocopy and pass off than a professionally manufactured salem's lot book jacket.
i do have to admit i'm surprised at the prices that the 1st state salem's jacket commands... someone with the right equipment hasn't already tried to professionally forge some of these jackets...

this is where proof of provenance is important

That's right folks, as I'm approaching the end of phase I in my King collecting, I'm also starting to get some of my other favorite authors in 1st/1st hardback. It's almost funny (and a bit anti-climactic) to see how quickly one can get all the Michael Crichton 1st/1sts for a relatively small sum of money. Right now, most of them are already on their way to me 8) Note that I didn't get into his pseudonyms (John Lange etc.) yet, that should prove to be a bit more challenging!

I got to thinking about the UK promo booklet for Blaze and realized that I don't think there was a UK proof issued for that book. Similarly, I also got a promo booklet for the UK Cell, and I don't think there was a proof issued for that one either. I do have the promo booklet for Under the Dome, but I know there was a UK proof issued. I got the first two from my UK contact, while the last I had to get from eBay. My contact is a reviewer in the UK. He didn't even know there was a promo for Under the Dome until I asked him about it.

I was thinking something along the same lines. Also, it got me wondering how, where, and to whom exactly these promo booklets are normally distributed? Are they just that - promo items freely distributed among booksellers - or are they spread in limited numbers and do they serve other purposes within the publishing industry?

LOL.

It's the first time I find a real jewel at abebooks. I saw it a night and it belonged to a bookstore in Germany. 7 euros for the book, 10 for the shipping.

Yes...I paid more for the shipping than for the book itself. :)

But it took me some time...been trying to find a good deal on that Rage book for more than a year!

It was a great day today..... I received both Knowing Darkness and Under The Dome S/L.

Knowing Darkness was one HUGE book. The photos do not do it justice. I took these quick photos of the front and back of the case along with the cover of the book. This will be a fun one to read. Jerad did a FANTASTIC job!!:clap:

That is a good day. Congrats!

I see you took your S/L out of the shrinkwrap. I'd like to do that as well, but I'm paranoid about accidentally screwing up the band or something afterward, since there's no slip- or traycase to store it in as yet. Not sure how long I'm going to be able to hold out without checking the signature though.

Patrick, I understand your hesitation, but you have to remember that S&S aren't like the presses we're use to dealing with regarding limited editions. If you wait too long and open the book to find it's torn, or missing something (like the signature page) there's a chance they won't have any replacement copies left (cause they sold them all after a couple of months).

Just my thoughts mind you. I have no information regarding this.

I just put a Brodart cover over my DJ and band and slapped it back on the book.

I am annoyed by the cards, and frankly wish they did not exist.

The stamped case they came in is over-sized, and as a result the corner was crushed.

My amazon order with my trade edition should arrive today!

lophophoras

I was annoyed that they used a double sided tape to stick the card case to the top of the page edges.

What is the possibility of tape residue damaging the page edges and the damage not being seen until the book ages some? (Just a thought, I could be wrong. But it did definitely come to mind when I removed the shrink wrap and saw it.)

Ok, thanks for all the feedback, you guys. I have today off work, so as soon as the kids leave to go play with their friends, that shrinkwrap is coming off.

Now what's this about tape sticking the card case to the book pages?

Dolan
11-11-2009, 09:27 AM
Not to defend S&S - because I certainly am not...

But they are hardly used to publishing limited editions of any kind. So what we may see as a juvenile flaw, they see as a corner cut or even an easier way of doing things.

Again - I don't excuse it because for all the money they rape..I mean raked in over this, they could have paid a professional a fee like... $3,000 to just DESIGN a basic limited for them. In this economy, I am sure any one of us would have come up with something cool.

If not, then at least some type of limitation page!

LOL..it looks like a piece of double sided tape to me. I think they used it to prevent the card case from moving around possibly.

I can take a pic of it and post it when I get home later tonight.

The tape seems not especially sticky--I laid both the signed and unsigned editions on their backs and after a little while, both boxes of cards fell off on their own. I wouldn't worry about the tape affecting the pages.

Don't most adhesives have some level of acidity though? If left attached could the glue maybe cause the place where the glue is attached to the pages to deteriorate at an accelerated rate compared to the page edges on their own? :orely:

That is what I was wondering. If someone were to leave their copy in the shrinkwrap could the tape possibly cause issues?

I was also concerned that if there is possibly any residue left on the page ends from the tape could it become discolored with age?

Time will tell.

biomieg, that looks like a really nice UK NIGHT SHIFT. Congratulations.

It is nice! There is some minor chipping on the DJ edges but overall I really can't complain. I paid £225 for it and well-informed sources tell me that is a good price. Ah, and the DJ has also 'shifted' a bit, i.e. it isn't precisely aligned on the book anymore. Some of my other early King books have this as well. Would you advise me to refold the DJ a tiny bit when applying the Brodart cover (which it doens't have right now), or would you leave it as it is?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are saying. Is it something that effects the way the book looks on the shelf, with the spine lettering appearing off center? If so, I would probably try to recenter it a little bit. Otherwise you will notice it every time you look at the shelf and it will continue to be a source of irritation.

Well...here they are....the marvelous stuff I took with me from the US. :)

A gift from Michael and Audrey's Whelan, a hat purchased at the Stanley hotel and the other two t-shirts purchased at the Estes Park Brewery:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525//0131.jpg

I can't thanks Wiz enough for holding for me almost all these dvds in his house:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/0216.jpg

With all these, I'm only missing Salem's Lot (1979), Tales from the Darkside: The movie, The Mangler and The Lawnmower man (and the new Children of the Corn). :)

Purchased at the Whelan's:

Some postcards:

And I got all my prints signed except one I forgot! :onfire:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/143.jpg

My favorite one:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/151.jpg

Got my books signed: two spanish editions and my Legends 1st HC:

And a unique piece of art: Michael's directions to reach my destination! Yes..it might sound a little...too much, but hell...would you throw that away? I SURELY NOT!

Of course I blured all the names

Last time, when I was about to travel to NY, Juliana adviced me to stop by at STRAND BOOKSTORE. I couldn't at that time...but I was able this time and... :excited:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525//161.jpg

I have to thank Craig, who was really kind and got me a copy of both magazines, The New Yorker and Entertainment weekly! :)

Some of the books are the ones I took with me to get them signed there by Michael Whelan and Mark Stutzman.

Only Cell, Buick 8, Duma Key in russian I think, The regulators, Skeleton crew and Legends were adquired at Strand Bookstore...but I spent less than 30 dls! The Skeleton crew copy is a 1st Ed. and it costed me $1.09. YES! $1.09

Now, here are my inscribed books by Mark Stutzman:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/181.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/191.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/221.jpg

Now...thanks to Juliana, I own now an item I always thought I'd never find: See a nice paperweight in the corner?

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/251.jpg

THANK YOU, JULIANA!!

There you can also see some other stuff. My new baby (PS3), some BluRays, the Times ticket and flyer, a present from Mark Stutzman (a deck of cards designed by him for David Blaine) and...I also have to thank Craig, who got me a copy of Bev's book...and guess what:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/261.jpg

YES! Signed as well! :D THanks man!!

These are some of the other things I got at Estes Park (finally!! The Shining beer!)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/074.jpg

And some beer labels from the brewery:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/067.jpg

By the way. I have sets repeated. If anyone wants a set or a particular label, just ask and I'll send it right away (for free, of course).

Some action figures:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/059.jpg

My girlfriend didn't like 'em too much. :D

And I think that's all.

mmmm.

Not exactly. ;)

My personal collection of Under the Dome:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/231.jpg

Two S/L, one white letter copy personaly signed in front of me, three black lettered copies signed and adquired at the Times event (two suffered a small accident, but well...they look great anyway!), the HC ARC, a regular HC copy, and I added my previously received UK ARC.

And here's the signature in one of those books:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/241.jpg

And that's all!! For now ;) I'm waiting for a new surprise!!!

I know....still.......there are only three copies of this that I know of. I've got one that came from Kirby McCauley's office (it's like yours with the corrections). Mike Pasiuk has one but I believe it is missing one month but it does have photocopies of Wrightson's preliminary artwork (Mike can correct me on this if I am wrong). I've never seen or heard of any others and I don't think we are going to go around making copies of them.

A "mock-up" is a preliminary look at an item. The brochure is the actual item produced and distributed. I've never seen this brochure for "Cycle of the Werewolf", but I assume it was done in color, etc., on quality paper.

With few exceptions King manuscript material, especially book length manuscripts from the Kirby McCauley era, are scarce.

BAG OF BONES is one that comes to my mind where complete copies of the manuscript were indiscriminately and recklessly made and sent out to collectors. There is no telling how many were done and, possibly, still being made. Some introductions, short stories, etc. circulate as photocopies among collectors but these are the exception rather than the rule.

Back in McCauley's day King would send a copy (sometimes the original) to Kirby. Obviously the artist would need one to do the illustrations and perhaps one to the publisher and editor. That would be it, especially for a small press like Land of Enchantment.

Mike's copy (with photocopies of Wrightson's preliminary work) came originally from L. W. Currey. Lloyd found it one day and said he had forgotten he had it. I passed on buying it but Chris Cavalier bought it and now it is Mike's. I suspect Wrightson or Zavisa was the source but I can't recall if Lloyd remembered or if he did if he ever told me.

My copy was from Kirby McCauley's office via Kirby's sister and Peter Schneider.

The bottom line, I guess, is that it is a scarce manuscript state and, IMO, worth more than you paid. I would be interested if Jerry Weist had any further information as to the source of your copy.

I plan on asking him about that also. I'll be asking Ms Mod at the SKMB about it also, per your suggestion, but she's out until the beginning of next week. I still find it rather interesting that this package had two different copies--one with the corrections and a typescript with the corrections having been done. Maybe this is a clue as to where and when it was done.

It is difficult to say without seeing it firsthand (and even if I did I don't have enough experience to render an expert opinion) but your copy without the hand corrections may be what is called an "original copy." This differs from a photocopy.

Here is what Peter Schneider once had to say on the subject of manuscript copies:

"Once Stephen King started to work on a word processor, it changed the ground rules for manuscripts. Upon completion of a novel, King would print out two copies of the manuscript: one copy would go to the publisher, the second would go to his agent. . This manuscript would be the first draft of the novel or short piece. Therefore, when the term 'original copy' is used, it refers to one of these two submitted manuscripts. Note that the actual manuscript with holographic changes made by King would have been returned to the author and subsequently submitted to the Stephen King collection at the University of Maine at Orono."

"Copies that have King's handwritten corrections are obviously copies of the submitted manuscript. But, that said, they are often the ONLY known versions of the manuscript available and are, in many cases, the original copies submitted to the publisher and agent from the author."

The copy you have that does NOT have the hand corrections is obviously a later state of the manuscript but, conceivably, could be an "original copy" printed directly from King's word processor. I would do some detective work if I were you.

Thanks for the info background behind what I have!!
I have the item now in front of me-had to dig deep in the stacks for it.
OK here goes
On Land of Enchantment letterhead paper
First a letter from "Land of Enchantment" stating This letter is to serve to validate the authenticity of materials sold to Eric Kramer of Fantasy Archives in NYC. In October of 1983, my company, Land of Enchantment published the hardcover first edition of Stephen King's CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF. The manuscripts for this book are in three editions and have been acquired by Fantasy Archives. In addition to these manuscripts, there also is a set of reproductions of the original sketches submitted to me by illistrator Berni Wrightson for the 12 color illustrations. A letter from Berni to me is also included. Signed Christopher Zavisa Publiher
envelope from letter also
also another letter from Land of Enchantment to Eric Kramer on Land of Enchantment letterhead:
Dear Eric,
Just came back from two weeks in Florida and felt guilty about not getting these materials to you at an earlier date. Apoligies submitted.
Enclosed is the letter regarding your purchase of the King manuscripts and a letter from Dean Koontz to me. Best Chris Zavisa and signed
The next letter is from Lloyd Curry Inc a long letter describing what I have:
Two photocopy typescripts and a proof of cycle of the werewolf comprising of a photocopy of the typed draft, a photocopy of the typed final copy and King's set of proofs as follows
1) "CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF" TM's 43 leaves photocopy of the first draft signed inscription by King to "Steve" dated 22 March 1986 -yes signed by King on page 1-not a copy of his signature but actual signature (complete book)
2) "CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF" TM's 3, 1-18, 30-57 (missing "July" section). Photocopy of the typed final copy. Signed inscription by King to "Steve" For Steve signed Stephen King 3/22/1986 on page 1
3) CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF photocopy of the galleys. King's set with his corrections throughout CORRECTED THROUGHOUT IN KING"S HAND. There are about 50 handwritten corrections on 33 of the 54 leaves of text plus King's notes on the first preliminary leaf. Inscribed by King on the first leaf "For Steve
Best Wishes and these are(underlined twice) my original galleys. Stephen King 3/26/86
On page 1 King wrote CHris
I like the type-face and the staggering of the paragraphs very much-it is classy S.K.-LOTS of handwritten corrections
4) "Berni Wrightson" An Appreciation written by Stephen King 3 leaves photocopy of the typeset. Accompanied by 1 page from Berni Wrightson to publisher Chris Zavia dated 8 December 1982. A full page holographic full page handwritten letter about the rough sketches for the color illustrations for CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF, plus photocopies of the twelve black and white sketches. according to the letter, these look to be the original rough sketches of ALL the months January to December. GREAT long letter from Wrightson-a bit of it
Dear Chris
I took down the werewolf story today and re-read it then O got out my sketchbook. I thought I'd do maybe 3 or 4 quick sketches just to kind of warm up and get into it.
Imagine my surprise when I got on a hot streak and did them all! I mean-I haven't worked for at least a month. I've been trying to get the studio finished before this spell of incredibily warm weather ended. Looks like I made it just in time.
Anyway, these sketches are for the color illustrations. They're very rough and most of them are going to be revised and re-worked to one degree or another. I was going for content more than any pictorial qualities. They all show more or less what I want to do, but not necessarily how I'm going to do it. But, even so, they capture the general spirit I'm after.
I'm going to need from you, as soon as possible, the page size of the book. I don't remember if we discussed it but I would really like to see these printed with a border, even if it's a very narrow one, rather than full bleed.
So let me know your thoughts on this. I've gor to run now-or walk is more like it. I overdid it the other day at the nautilus club si I'm going to give my poor muscles a long soak in a hot tub.
I hope you like the sketches-I think it was a good day's work myself-and get back to me as soon as you can signed
All the best
Berni

5) Letter from Dean Koontz to Chris Zavisa dated 29 April 1985 regarding "corrected computer galleys for TWILIGHT EYES, a short novel also published by Zavisa.

6) SUPER AWESOME ALSO--I saved the best for last:
An unrelated King Manuscript "THE STRANGE CASE OF EASTLAKE STATIONERY" 7 pages-computer generated ink-jet print out with corrections in King's hand in black in.
Provenance:
This material was purchased in March 1986 by Fantasy Archives for Stephen S Wallace who had the CYCLE manuscript copies and proof signed by King on 22 March 1986. They resided in the Wallace collection until acquired by L.W. Currey, Inc on 2 April 1994. The manuscripts have never previously been offered for sale.

OK
Unbelievably long but this is a tremendous collection in my humble opinion!! Lots of King real signatures, correction, --some really nice stuff.

I looked up the story THE STRANGE CASE OF THE WESTLAKE STATIONERY and it was originally only published once in Transylvania Station 1987. King's corrections are by hand in black ink. Doubt it was ever published elsewhere....

"The Strange Case of the Westlake Stationery" is not a short story, but a non-fiction text. It's the introduction to the book "Transylvania Station." See Justin Brooks' bibliography, C231.

OH MY GOD!!!! SHE'S SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE CATS...Since I moved from my parent's house I don't have one and I miss them so much :(

My girlfriend told me that the cat would be alone all day long...and since I don't want to make the cat feel bad, I won't be able to have one until moving to a house. :(

LOL They're cats alone is what they do. :)

Or just get 2.

I told her that...but she managed to turn me down.

I have a turtle, which is in my parent's house.

His name: Roland of Gilead :) (true).

Christine, by the way, your avatar is from the NYC event? I remember King doing that (very funny moment).

Lovely cat, Eric :D we also got ourselves a lovely, adorable, furry little beauty about two months ago. Meet Rosie!

Best of luck Ari! As was mentioned, if you are worried about your cat being alone, you can always get two!

Luckily, I already have a dog and although they don't get along great, they can at least keep each other company when no one is home.

And just a plug for animal adoption and rescues: this is my second rescued animal and they make really great pets! And unfortunately, theres never a shortage of little critters that need a good home.
