WOW! :clap:nice book bob! is there anything you don't collect bob?

BEWARE!...PLOM (poor little ol me) rant to follow:
ah well... i'm having to go an a self imposed collecting fast myself for a while... again.... did so last year and got totally debt free...i'm still 100% debt free, but....
just got notified yesterday that the owner of the house i rent (for the past 6 years) plans to evict me, so they can tear down the house and build condos on the property. they wanted me out by the end of apil....but i said no way... so i have til the end of may.

aaaaarg! i hate this because i was only paying 595.00 a month in rent, and wasn't planning on moving until i could buy a house outright.... now i have to find a house to buy in less than 60 days.... and will have to finance part of it.
so i'm saving as much as i can to try to lower the payments. (not to mention the moving costs)
waaaah. no books for a while. it's going to be a hectic pain in the yaya to find, buy a house and move (all these books, oh my) to a new place in 60 days.
not to mention i have to devise a plan to move...2 trucks, 1 car, a harley + sidecar, 1 boat aa 5x8 trailor loaded with sound equipment, and a 18x 8 x 6ft dog kennel - all by myself.
my next new pride and joy shown here will be a house - if i live through it.

ok...i'm through stomping my foot.:onfire:

Terry, At least you don't have to worry about selling a house. I don't know what the market is down in your part of Texas, but up here in Ohio it's TERRIBLE!! Lots of sellers are having to drop the prices of their houses more than 20% of what they would have sold for a year ago. Or in some areas even more! And then the possible buyers can't get financing.

As long as I have the scanner out...

I picked up a couple of these free promotional magazines today at my local comic store. Has anyone else seen these?

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Comics/DT-LongRoad-PromoMag.jpg

Patrick-
Yes, I did get one of these, but had to pay $10 for it on eBay. My comic store said they gave them all away about three weeks ago and would not get any more in, so I went to ebay and only found one person offering it.
Aw, Wiz, sorry to hear you had to pay ten bucks, I would have gotten you one. Interestingly a couple weeks ago, my comic store didn't have them so I had no idea these existed until yesterday. Maybe I'll stop by today and pick up a couple more, there weren't many sitting out but he may have more in back. The nice thing is that he does seem to get a decent quantity of all the comic promo stuff.

Anyone know where I could get one of these???

Try a PM to Patrick
It's a more successful strategy than some might realize.

I pick up a few spares of the promo freebies when I can and I usually just give them away to other enthusiasts around here, but please try your local comic book store first. That way I can send my spares to those who really can't access them elsewhere (without going to eBay).

By the way, that particular promo item has a short article and a 2-page artwork reprint from the comic, then goes on to discuss other non-King Marvel projects.

actually the home sell market in austin isn't to bad, though it has dropped a tad from last year.
the average time to sell a home is 28 days inside most desirable areas of austin (last year ir was 15 days)
it's about 50 days for the worst parts of austin
he current average home price is $328,655.00 and always going up.
it's definitely still a sellor's market in austin (as long as you buy again somewhere else -ie. not austin- after selling)

that's what happens when your the hottest tech/college/arts city in the state.
35.9 % austin residents are from California,
20% from new york/boston,
10% are from china or india (and every single one is an engineer)
the rest are illegals from mexico....
and then ...

I don't know if you'll read this book John, but I asked before about Mick Garris on a forum, thinking the guy couldn't write since he does average movie adaptations of King stories, but everyone thought the guy was a pretty darn good writer. He's also got a book out by CD, both books were praised.

Well a couple of more Dark Tower proofs. So that now makes two proofs for Drawing and two proofs for The Wasteland in my collection. Hopefully I can now close the door on these two as far as collecting goes. Although the Wastelands has a little water damage, we'll see if I bother with another. Probably not.

Somehow I have a feeling John's going to tell there's more than two proofs for each book. lol :)

John

It's all relative. Some factors you have to consider is the item, the collector base and when the item was printed.

Taking this very proof for example ... 150 printed may be an ample supply for the few die hard proof completists. It's a newer title and we're all actively seeking it out. Some if not most of the 150 copies do have to be sent to reviewers for periodicals and newspapers.

However, hypothetically speaking had this been a proof of a pre-fame title and 150 were printed ... perhaps 80% or more would have been trashed ( literally thrown out ) 15% in various states of used condition and 5% or less in collectible condition.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that 150 copies may seem like a relatively small number...but it's probably enough to satisfy the hard-core proof collector. It wouldn't be much fun collecting the modern proofs if it weren't for the more scarce one every now and then.

Here are a couple of pages of the original artwork for CREEPSHOW by Bernie Wrightson. These are from the story "Father's Day" and, I think, are pages 6 & 7. Each is on Bainbridge board measuring 12.5" x 16". Each has a clear acetate overlay that has the lettering (captions). I like these a lot. I wish I could find some more. I don't think $25 for shipping is too much to pay for an overseas shipment, especially if it is expedited shipping.

Are you asking because you now don't trust the seller? Their feedback is good but mostly it is from only a handful of sellers. I didn't find any feedback on this person as a seller.

If you are uneasy you can buy the book for the same price on ABE from Mythos Books. It doesn't have the bookmarks but those can't be worth that much.

NeedfulKings
04-03-2008, 06:24 PM
He needs to honor his original cost. As a seller, if I don't do my research, I eat the cost.

All that said, I won a large set of comics and paid $5 shipping (as stated in the listing). When I got the package a few days later I saw that he paid $7 (if you ask at the P.O., comics can technically, not go "media").

I sent him 2 bucks.

Chooch

I like the idea of sending him the extra "After" I get the book...I dont have any problem with that. I looked at his feedback and I also seen that all of his feedback is from being a buyer...hence the 28 (lot of same seller deals) but you would think he would know better...or at least do his homework. I agree that he should honor his price and live the his decision, but I dont want to make him pissy about it. I just want the book.....

NeedfulKings
04-03-2008, 06:43 PM
$10 is less than 10% of your total cost, so you can't go wrong either way. If you pay it, no big deal. I hope the book is well packed when it arrives.

I say that the seller should (has to by auction policy) honor the "reasonably quoted" shipping price.
Sorry if they are off by $10-$20. Their mistake. No different than them stating "I had too low of a reserve-please add $10 to the price to consumate the sale".
I have had to eat overseas shipping costs because I myself wasn't truly cogizant of the significant price difference.
Their is a "buyer beware", saying and there should be a "shipper beware" saying.

Rahfa
04-03-2008, 07:58 PM
I sell on Abebooks and the price they quote for international shipments is ridiculous, so I end up asking people to pay more...I hate it, but Abe doesn't let me control the quoted shipping.

From Romania, IF he ships it a fairly quick method will cost him MUCH more than $25 (priority insured mail to the UK is at least $50)...so, it's fair to pay some extra...he, however, is a goofball for thinking it was only going to be $15.

I wouldn't sweat it. Given the overseas shipment it's fair. But...make sure he's sending it by air, not the 4-6 week long shipment method!

Want to sell me a copy?
Absolutely not. But I'll give one to you and one to Bill if I can find a couple more somewhere. Let me see what I can find out in the next couple days. :)

speaking of freebies,patrick i got you goodie-bag today.there was some great stuff in there.thx a million,youre a legend!!
You received it already - way over there in Ireland?! Wow, I must have really expidited that overseas shipping. Happy to have contributed in a very small way to your collection.

Great stuff, as long as your not stuck with the cigarette butts.:nope:Oh, I thought you were talking to shnnrc about me, but you know I don't smoke cigarettes. Now I realize you were referring to the ashtray in Darkthought's post on the previous page.

I sell on Abebooks and the price they quote for international shipments is ridiculous, so I end up asking people to pay more...I hate it, but Abe doesn't let me control the quoted shipping.

I buy from Abebooks quite regularly and expect to pay extra shipping. I know the sellers cannot possibly ship for the prices quoted at Abebooks.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270225135366&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

and then I get this email today

Dear bikerchooch,

Hello,

First of all: congratulations! I hope you will enjoy the book. I presume you don't need one more copy? :) I still have one available.

I was at the PO today and it seems I underestimated the shipping of THE ROAD TO THE DARK TOWER SLIPCASE edition to US.

If you want me to send the package registered (a good advice), I will need $10 more. It is a very large book, not the usual CD standards.

Thanks and best wishes,
Max

So now I'm totally freakin'. I thought "Hey good deal..two signatures and as a kicker 6 of the 7 bookmarks. What do you think I should do about this??

I'm HOPING to win a couple of Brian Keenes off him in the next 24 hours or so. Will be interesting to see what the shipping to the UK works out as, should I win.

Well these are not King items, but they are two new Ray Bradbury acquisitions that I'm pretty happy about (as some know I also collect Bradbury). The first is a Fahrenheit 451 from 1982 by the Limited Editions Club, signed by Bradbury and bound in aluminum (the slipcase is not). And I decided to go for a pricey Lettered Farewell Summer from Sub Press. It has the standard traycase, but done well, and the book is nice, quarter leather bound with suede boards. It's pretty unusual. Both books are welcome additions to my Bradbury collection.

I'm surprised you haven't read Bradbury before Bob. I can't recommend him enough. I tend to think King and Bradbury are the two greatest living authors today. Not just because of the literature they've produced, but also because I think they are the two most influential authors of our generation. There might be some better writers but they have not had worldwide influence like a Poe, that these two are achieving.

Just being curious : Carlos, with your massive collection and knowledge... did you ever consider writing your own book about King's collectibles or something like that?

No, I've never thought about doing that. The closest I will likely ever come is to be acquainted with some of the writers who do that and offer to help them in any way I can. At some point George Beahm is supposed to come to Amarillo to take a bunch of pictures for his latest updated book on King collectibles. I don't know when that will be. I've offered and he's accepted. We just have to get him here.

OK here are (attached with thumbnails) some pictures done with my camera, coz my scanner just doesnt want to work...
on a picture, there is a white mark, done (with paint) to hide what is according to me a tracknumber available on all the pages...
Basically, this is only sheets (627 pages... see the 4th pic!), that i will later put in a folder to protect it...

thats the better pictures i can do, and i dont know what else to shot, so i hope it fullfil your expectations...

Here's my latest proof acquisition. Stephen King did the introduction for this. As you can see, there were only 350 of these ARCs done for the 1989 World Fantasy Convention. The Dream Press edition was issued in three hardcover formats, all signed by Matheson: 500 unnumbered copies, 400 numbered copies in a slipcase and 100 deluxe numbered copies in a traycase. I don't currently own any of these, however.

Put it this way, would you trade - even up - a signed Carrie first edition AND a signed Gunslinger first for a signed Blaze 1st? Even with the 'Bachman' reference?

Um...no chance in hell...

Blaze, signed, is a great addition to a collection and very, very scarce signed in any event...but it's not one of King's two most seminal works.

Both Tippy and Nameless made the right call with they had!

I'm really enjoying looking at all the books that were signed at the D.C. event. I'm going to go to Wal-Mart today and see if my pictures are ready.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this (I'm still new here!!) but what exactly is a "proof" copy and how does one go about obtaining one?

Nice books, nameless.

I thought it was fascinating to see what people brought to get signed. We let a girl who worked at the Folger cut in front of us with a Viking HC of The Gunslinger that she was going to give to her brother. Ahead of her was a guy getting the DT HC comic book signed. I saw a softcover Cycle of the Werewolf, a guy with a battered HC of IT and an even more battered movie tie-in paperback of Shawshank. The guy next to us at the reading brought a bag full of things wrapped in bubblewrap and Broadarts for King to sign: a first Dead Zone, a first Stand, a volume from the Green Mile limited, and a couple other things I can't remember. He was walking around the church offering people money to go through the line and get his extra books signed.

Proofs are also known as Advance Reading Copies or ARCs. They are issued by the publisher before the actual book is published to reviewers, etc. They are actually the very first publication of the book. See also Stephen King proofs (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=443)

Now I'm officially Pi$$ed Off. I took some great pictures of DC and the Three Kings event and couldn't wait to get them developed. I just went to Wal-Mart to pick them up, and they are terrible. No, I'm not over-reacting - they are terrible. Out of the 27 pictures that I took, I had to return 14 of them. I am so disgusted right now, it's not even funny.

I'm not sure if it was my fault or Wal-Mart's fault. Regardless, I'm never buying a disposable camera again. One time is too many. Of course, it just had to happen at the event that I wanted pictures of the most.

Are you trying to rub it in? After all the trouble that I've been through with disposable cameras, I'm not purchasing them anymore. I'm going to have to invest in a digital one. The only problem is that they are uber expensive. I was looking at the Sony Cybershot -- that's a nice'un. It's on sale for $275 at Best Buy, but when you're 15 with no means of a steady income, it's alot of dinero.

Chooch
04-14-2008, 05:37 PM
Nope..not trying to rub it in! I feel the pain...but you can get a decent point and shoot nowdays fairly cheap. If Im not mistaken I think they sell those as a one time use also. 15 and limited cash...been there (long ago) and it isnt any fun...check on the site and see if anyone has any pic's of you in them or is willing to send you some to download. No-one will know that you didnt take them unless you tell them. And you were there, got the stub and sig's to prove that. Just dont go round posting them everywhere saying" Look at the pic I took" that wouldnt be to cool. Wish I was 15 again...man the things I'd do different...oh well....

John, it is pretty big and the focal point of my overall collection. I did miss out on one book I wanted from the last lot that Stu posted at Bett's. It was a King signed Wolves Artist's Edition, the first I have seen. I mailed him at 4am but someone overseas beat me to the email request. Anyone from here???

Anyway, I have a DT VII AE signed by King, so am looking for a SoS and Wolves. No hurry, no worry for me. There is always the next King signing that undoubtedly will occur within the next couple of years, although there is no guarantee that he will allow ANY book to be signed.

Niether, its the camera's fault. 800 speed film sucks (your pictures probably turned out ridiculously grainy), but due to its versatility its what they usually through in disposables. I work in the Photolab for the only company that competes with Walmart in Canada, and we all use the same equipment. We can screw it up big time, but theres no middle ground - either we destroy the whole film or develop it as good as its going to get.

Nice job Wiz, getting those signed. Those two signed UK arc's are very, very nice.

now for some standard new items I received lately.

I don’t know why I’ve gone crazy on audio books lately, especially since Mr. Rabbit helped me with the one’s where I was short, but nevertheless it happened. I bought all 4 of the DTBay auctions that were for the Frank Muller cassette versions of The Dark Tower 1 – 4, to help out with the auctions, and then that just fueled the urge, I guess, lol. So I then picked up cassette versions of Gerald’s Game and The Regulators, plus the cd version of Dreamcatcher. So I have audio books up to my arms right now.

But I’m happy, I actually have quite a large collection of King’s audio books right now (over 20), which I am collecting as the books, because I also like to listen to audio books.

It's probably too simplistic to attribute King's recent crappy signatures to his accident but, in my mind, that's when they really started getting very bad.

I also wondered why the "KING" was squished. I only noticed it from the books from the DC signing though. Being that it was VERY rushed, I suppose that Mr. King was trying to go as fast as he could.

I honestly don't think that it's because of the accident.

I finally got a decent digital camera last Christmas but could never get the pics to actually show up in a message, finally figured it out so here they come. First up is an unusual item and story.

I was looking for custom painted "Painted Pony" figurines for my Mom on Ebay, found a guy who painted a few native scenes I liked and bid on a few for myself. I was always outbid. Then He listed doing a custom pony and I emailed asking if He could do one based on the SK Dark tower series of books (I told him I could give him the basics) He said thats OK He had read the books and would love to do one. Here are the pics, there is a lot of subtle details you can't see real well.

While He was working on this one He mentioned in an email that He would like to do one based on Poppy Z Brites Lost Souls, I almost peed my pants I am a big Poppy fan (including my name being used in Her book *D*U*C*K*) and my Poppy collection would be comparable to Bob's SK collection (but thats for another post). So I asked if He would do that next He said yes. I got the Dark Tower/SK one and He started on the Lost Souls/Poppy pony, after a week or two He sent me an email saying it was done and offering to send pics. I asked Him not to I wanted to see it in person and I would wait. Well after a few weeks I started emailing Him that I had not received it and never got a response. After another week I got an email from His sister saying He was sick but She would send it, after about another week She emailed saying it had been returned and asked for my address again, then She told me He had passed away. After another 2 weeks She emailed it came back again She would try once more and then She was closing His email account. I never did receive it  . Here are the pics.

Having my name in the book was an ebay auction for charity, I outbid Bev to win, somewhere around 265.00, a bit less than the similar King auction  .

I will get some pics up soon, I have most lettereds (I don't have any King lettereds) proofs (the only King proof I have belonged to Poppy), 11 different trade editions with original drawings Poppy did inside, the empty bottle of chartruese she drank with friends before writing a scene in Lost Souls, a longcoat she wore that she thought of as a characters from Lost Souls (Nothing), a bunch a personal items etc.

Since we're sharing pics Wiz, here's a Wolves AE:

Congratulations, Wiz. You probably have one of the largest collections of SIGNED Dark Tower books around!

In the meantime, I'd love it if you could post a photo of your Whelan remarque. I'd like to see the whole thing again. If I remember, it has skulls, bones and stuff. Michael always did skulls well.

Thanks, I own the first one, bought from Mr. Ink himself. The story behind that is my family crest on my mothers side (from Wales, yes, Ceri, from Wales!) features 4 crows and there are 4 boys (my mother had two and her sister had two), so the family pull was also there. Mr. Ink took pity on me and sold that particular remarque to me.

I was happy to see it go to good hands...I do love those remarques too. They always put a smile on my face.:cowboy:

This just came the other day. This book is big! and heavy. If you have the Centipede Press leather edition of 'SALEM'S LOT you know what I mean.

One of 22 deluxe editions of DRACULA by Centipede Press. It uses the illustrations by Greg Hildebrandt (always my favorite Dracula illustrations) from the 1985 Unicorn edition.

Jerad is just getting better and better. Really impressive reproduction of the illustrations, paper and printing quality, etc.

I collect different editions of DRACULA and this is right at the top of my list of favorites.

It is difficult to photograph the "silkscreen" illustration on the front board because of the glare.

Bob,

Have you ever posted a picture of your first edition Dracula? That would be very cool to see.

A member here had asked to see photos of a copy of The Plant that i had done. I wanted it hardbound like a regular book, but it was somewhat pricey so i ened up having it spiral bound and it turned out quite nice. The place is just a very small press, but they took an interest in the project and even ordered in nicer heavier stock paper for me. i took some photos and sent them along to he who asked for them but thought while i had them on here i would post them for all. Like I said its only spiral bound but i was very happy with it and they only charged me $22 !!

That was a great price, Rusty! I'd like to get a copy like that. I have mine in a manila folder!
