Very cool! It's amazing what we can find if we look.

It reminded me of the old days, where the hunt in a bookstore or flea market was half the thrill. The internet just does not feel the same.

Time for my other Boston Comic Con story. So, the other artist I was jazzing to meet was Jae Lee. I have long been drooling over some of the remarques he's done in TWTTK. A couple of months back I was able to work a deal with David at Betts to get a Dark Tower set that runs from III-TWTTK - I'm looking for #255 for the first two if anyone has them. My goal was to get Jae to do a remarque in the signed limited TWTTK. On Friday, I was one of the first people to get to Jae's table, before the line became untenable. He was taking commissions (not cheap for what I wanted) and I had to do a little convincing because he was a bit hesitant to take such an expensive book into his hands for the weekend - he promised to have it done on Sunday. He actually seemed a bit disappointed that I wanted a Roland remarque as those are what he gets asked for most often. Then I went off to see Bernie as I described in my other recent post here.

The next day, Saturday, I decided to see if I could get Jae to do two more remarques, this time in my two artist editions of TWTTK. Jae said OK, but I would have to give him till the end of the day on Sunday as commissions were running high. I also decided to have him add something to my original commission from Friday. Joe had seemed genuinely disappointed at doing another Roland so I threw him some more money and asked if he could add another person from the Ka-Tet. We settled on Detta in her wheel chair. I could see that he was enthused by the opportunity to add more. Off I went to see what else I could find.

Sunday rolls around and I am so excited to see what Jae has come up with. I also decide to press my luck and ask for a fourth remarque, this time in my Marvel edition of The Gunslinger Born - Love Jae's work in this series. He initially did not want to add to the work he had to finish, but when I mentioned that I would like a Susan Delgado he just smiled and said "yes." That's when he dropped the bomb on me. Jae said that he had become inspired the night before as he was doing the preliminary sketch for my TWTTK remarque. He said that he wanted to draw the whole Ka-Tet if that was OK with me - "Hell yeah!" was my reply. Jae was nervous about time and asked that I come back at 6PM, right when the Con was to end. Needless to say I walked around the Con giddy with excitement. When 6PM rolled around I cycled back to reap my rewards. Unfortunately, Jae was only half way done with the inking of TWTTK. He gave me my other three remarques - just look below to enjoy them - but needed more time. Jae told me he was staying at the hotel across the street and I told him I was parked underneath and that my wife and I could go have a drink while he finished. He was relieved. That's when Jae gave me his business card, with his personal phone number so we could text when he was done - I could probably sell that number! KIDDING! So now I am having a few beers with my wife, and Jae texts me at 7PM that he's done, but that he really wants to add one more thing if I can wait a little longer - he wants to add the bleeping Crimson King! Another beer for my wife and me. 7:45 rolls around and in pops Jae with what he calls "the best" remarque he has ever done in a King book, and the "only" remarque to have the whole Ka-tet, even Oy. When I mention how I can't wait to put it up on the site here and that I had gotten he book from David, he just smiled and told me to tell David "hi" - I already passed that one one. I offered to buy Jae a drink but alas the does not drink. We took a picture together with his masterpiece, now mine, and then went on our merry ways. Just thought I would pass on Jae's final sentiments that working on The Dark Tower for Stephen King, for Donald Grant, for Marvel, and for us has been, and I quote, "the single best professional experience in his life." His body of work certainly shows it. Sorry to taking so long to tell a simple story, but it was just a thrill! Enjoy!

And for the following item I can't thank Jerome enough for what he did.

A month ago one of the elusive Maximum Overdrive Cardboard trucks was auctioned and I couldn't afford the amount at that precise moment. The auction was over only a couple of hours ago and big was my surprise when Jerome contacted me telling me he bought the item so I'd not lose it. Not only he didn't charge me an extra cent but he even took two installments for the payment. I can't thank him enough for his kindness and help. :)

And now the funny thing: when I started looking for the Maximum Overdrive Cardboard truck I saw one over a bookcase and I calculated it couldn't be larger than 10'' x 5''. So when I got the package and it was HUGE, I realized there are TWO cardboard trucks. One is the small one...and the other the one I got:

https://scontent-eze1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14102533_10210752909403554_53254724632347664_n.jpg ?oh=f9e47190c9b782bb058e281df3398124&oe=583BA8BD

There's no way I can have this display at my house. So I only kept displayed the truck and find a great place to show it:

https://scontent-eze1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14100373_10210752923923917_8876497772448474907_n.j pg?oh=548812c6a7ceea14c07262e307380b58&oe=5841EBA7

That package took a very circuitous route.
The address I mailed it to was in an industrial area and the "suite" number wasn't on the shipping label.

The box went to and from from me in California, to Miami Florida, lost in transit, returned do to insufficient address. The box came back to me and I had to add cardboard support/protection on all four corners as is was starting to fall apart. Waiting on hold for the USPS, even with the direct number to the local post office was quite the PITA. Hours and hours.

It finally arrived, and as Ari can attest it's a huge bastard. It was over 10 lbs. and an odd size. ~30"x30"x4".

My second favorite author is Bernard Werber, a french author that is literally considered as a superstar in Korea & Russia (only his first book has been translated in english, as EMPIRE OF THE ANTS. As a side note, while King was in front of 2500 people in France, the same evening he was in front of 10,000 in korea).

I personally know that author since about a decade, after meeting him in a signing and presenting my research about his work, which I am trying to turn into a book.
I know that he regularly invite some friends over on sundays for talking and playing a game (a werewolf card game, where villagers are trying to find out who are the werewolves decimating the village : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Werewolves_of_Millers_Hollow ) and today was the first time I was actually invited to take part of it.

Before other people arrived, he gave me a copy of his next book to be published (in a month), as a proof copy (which he signed) & a final copy.
His next book is titled DEMAIN LES CHATS (lit : TOMORROW THE CATS)

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/demain-chats--0.JPG http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/demain-chats--1.JPG

At the end of the afternoon, we chatted a bit more, and he invited me to his other flat to get a couple of more proofs he forgot to give me and chatted some more (including about King).

He asked me if I needed any other books, and I replied/made the mistake of mentionning I started collecting EMPIRE OF THE ANTS in foreign languages. At that point, he started handing me over many books in different languages (he was also pleased to clear out a bit of space).
So instead of leaving with only 3-4 books, I actually left with an entire boxful off books and 4-5 extra proofs I already had!
Oh, and I guess that my foreign collection will not solely focus on 1 specific book anymore.
I actually need to sort that box I had to carry for 1h in the metro. I didn't take a good picture, but i'd say there is about 20 books...

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/IMG_9733.JPG

On top of that, he also handed me that one :

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/IMG_9736.JPG

A printed version of his previous book, with his working title (as printed : the kingdom of dreams, which would become "THE SIXTH SLEEP")... so a version of a book BEFORE even the proof! Told me that he probably got it back from the person to whom he dedicated the book.
So, for me, this one is quite a gem!

I am in touch with SONY reps.
The marketing manager dealing with that title forwarded my details to the french reps (and therefore I should not contact the international manager directly), who have never even heard of that book. I guess that i'll never get lucky enough to get one as a freebie :p
The only copy I received for free was auctioned as a fundraiser.

It's odd, but most international "press" want and often receive a free book, and then a short time later, the free book sells for a handsome price.

Picked this up from the framer and I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. Here is the original cover painting from the Doubleday 1st edition of 'SALEM'S LOT.
I was going for a bit of a goth look in the frame and thanks to some advice by some members here (thank you Alec and Becca) I kept the proportions of the paper intact and went with an asymmetrical matting.

I've pretty much accepted that it's unlikely I'll ever own a first state SL dust jacket, so I'm pretty happy to have this instead.

That makes sense, especially in a small venue.

I'll wait until they schedule a show close enough to go to before I worry about it. They don't have anything scheduled in the South. Hopefully after the European leg.

When I was at the Whelan's a very cool thing happened. I am finally able to share it. Walking through their home / art gallery was a dream come true for me as many of you know:) So, a very cool thing took place when we got to tour Michael's studio. It is literally where the magic happens. Very neat to see "his space" and how he captures what he does in picture. Upon walking back down the staircase... I stopped and started at this piece which I had not seen on the way up. I LOVED IT.... caught my eye and it was the color and look of midworld to me.. in my own mind. He paid it no mind as we walked by but I stopped and asked him about it. He said the painting (it is an oil on canvas) bothered him for many years. It was not for sale and the reason Michael told me it wasn't for so long that after it was used in a King book... he hung it not to be sold... cause there was something missing from it. He submitted it to Grant but still something nagged at him. He told me to look and look closely and then I started to see the number '9' which is prevalent in most of his work but the painting is large (my largest Whelan) and my eyes missed it. He pointed out the tree needed the Crimson King's touch and put the eye in as you can see if you have not seen it already! It really is a breathtaking picture... artwork in person VS in a book or on the computer is simple like comparing a movie to a book.... there is no comparison.

I walked down the hall with my wife and happen to catch Mr. Whelan staring at it as were walking away, he moved to leave, then turned back and took it off the wall. He brought it out to the living room where we were all talking and then sat it down up against the wall. I thought it odd and commented so to his wife a week later... and she told me Michael wanted me to have it providing I was able to afford the piece. It was not for sale was what I thought... and it is a lot of money... and they did look after me a bit price wise and damm right I did what I had to.. to get it. Period.

Pics are not the best but here it is:)

As I'm sure most of you saw earlier this week, I picked up the lettered edition of IT from Betts. It came today and I love it (no pun intended). IT is by far my favorite book and what initially got me into collecting books so I wanted to share some shots from right after I unpacked it.

oh no wait becca, are you in the 'keep it in the shrink wrap' camp? uh oh I'm not sure we can be friends any more.

seriously though; I know this has been debated here endlessly but I have first hand experience with leaving the shrink wrap on too long and it didn't have a happy ending. it reacted with the dust jacket of my DT III somehow and ruined it. I was lucky enough to get a new jacket but never again.

in other news: I picked this up from the framer this weekend. here is the original art from the Doubleday edition of THE SHINING. I was trying to go for a classic look with a bit of a 70's vibe, so the framer recommended a gold frame with a bit of an olive cast and I quite like the way it turned out . framed, it's roughly 32" x 42", so it's pretty big and I needed to rearrange things to find a place to hang it. one of these days, I'll figure out how to take a decent photo:

It's funny, I agree with this. I love it because it's long but should it not be on one of his most famous novel... I would probably pass it by. You should be honoured to have this. Love the frame job on this sooooo much. You knocked it out of the park my man!

a few days back, Alec posted something in his collection thread that really resonated with me and I hope he doesn't mind if I quote him:
"Any area of collecting only becomes really worth it when shared with like minded people."
before I found my way here, I was an island. I had no one (well, no one that cared about it anyway) to discuss my collection with; no one to share it with; and certainly no one to draw inspiration from. I love that collection of FIRESTARTERs. before here, it would never have even occurred to me to collect the consecutive dates, but now that I see it, I cant help but think 'what a wonderful goal to work towards'.

it really is a fabulous addition Fsmdr. well done.

Hey, one oreo is supremely better than no oreos

I dont remember the last time I had Oreos. Probably a few years back, when they were LAUNCHED in France

I really like the Golden Oreos more than the originals. A few years ago I noticed for the first time that they were making the Golden Oreos with the double stuffing. I was actually pretty excited about this. I went into work the next day and told one of my technologists in an overly dramatic manner that I thought my life was now complete since they had started making Double Stuff Golden Oreos. She just nodded her head and looked at me sort of funny.

Several weeks later I was having our annual Christmas party at our house for the 30 or so people in my department. As people began to arrive I noticed that they were all carrying gifts which was most unusual. Towards the end of the evening I was summoned to the living room where I was told I needed to open my gifts. By this time I knew something was up. I then proceeded to open about 30 packages all containing Double Stuff Golden Oreos. Lots of laughs all around but I was actually pretty happy about it. They filled up the pantry and it took a long time but I finally got them all eaten. We went online to look for Oreo recipes and we made Oreo truffles a couple of times to take in to work but mostly I just ate my way through them.

I am down to 2-3 weeks for something that has never been seen, done, thought of even? So one of kind... it will be one of my crown jewels. It has been in the works since June 1st. I am hoping to reveal all mid October. I am so excited to show the people here as they will appreciate it 100%. It really is bad ass... How many Oero's? Geez... not sure, you be the judge haha
That surely sounds promising!

Thanks all.

Sadly, there was a bad bump to the slipcase (and a tiny one to the base of the spine on the book) which was not disclosed in the auction. If you scutinize the auction photos, you can see it....but you really have to know where to look....or at least be on the hunt for it. I contacted the seller, and he has given me a partial refund (in fact he gave me £10 more than I asked for), which will go towards the purchase of a replacement case.

WhooHoo! Picked this up this morning at the National Book Festival. The Convension Center is 2 blocks from my Condo. I paid a guy $180 for it. (It's a 6th edition but better than no signed book).

Received this a short time ago. Absolutely love it..

Shannon, you sir, should be making more of these. I know you have had a hard journey after this book, but I think it is excellent.

And my Remarque is out of this world!
