Mail man brought me another package today, but didn't deliver it, and left me a slip on the door instead  Regrettably, I don't have any acquaintances in the post office, so I have to wait till the morning. It's either my books from Grant (Karen, did you guys use USPS or UPS?) or the Straub signed Grant Talisman I brought from Shibus. Either way, more pics in the morning :)

We did ship USPS, but it's not signature required. It is insured, though, I wonder if that makes a difference :beat:

Often, yes, you have to sign for an insured package.

Now, can we add this under the prototype listing for The Regulators?:)

It's not a prototype. It's a custom binding.

I would agree with that.
Would you consider it to be the equivalent of the Skeleton Crew 1/1 goatskin?

It should maybe listed on the SK Proofs list, as Bob says, it is a unique proof he has never seen.

Next up is a large box of proof pages. This is the proof that Joe Stefko was sent to work from for the book design. I've never seen this proof state before. I suspect it is somewhat rare but I really don't know. You can see how small that little drawing of the radar dish is at the top of the second picture.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/regulatorsproofloosepages.jpg

OK. Now I am going to try to take some good photos of a really neat book that I also got.

I think these were the "Proofs"

This is a unique copy of THE REGULATORS. Joe Stefko had this bound for his own personal use. He said he wanted to read a leather bound copy without having to deal with the bullets. He never got around to reading it, he said.

Handbound in purple leather with black stamping of title and bullet holes ravaging the front board. Raised bands on the spine with six compartments with a bullet hole in each.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/regulatorsdesignercopy1.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/regulatorsdesignercopy2.jpg

The last of the PC checks is affixed to the front page with King signing as Bachman.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/regulatorsdesignercopy3.jpg

Joe had a special "Regulators" checking account that all the business for this book was done from. He affixed one of these checks on the last page with details, provenance, etc.

Today hasn't been the best of days for me but it has certainly finished nicely. I am just really pleased to put this book in my collection.

I think the 1/1 book qualifies a a S/L as it has a Richard Bachman signed check.

Picked up my package at the post office today. It was the Straub signed Grant Deluxe Trade Talisman (1984). Won it from our own Shibus on Ebay for an excellent price, thanks man! Still in unread condition, the gold gilting looks pristine. I've wanted one of these for awhile now.

Karen, I have a feeling I'll be getting another slip on my door for the LSoE package since my wife and I are both at work from 7am till 6pm usually. The Talisman package wasn't signature required, but it was insured, which is why they left the note.

I think that keychain may be dangerous dude. You know what people say about Ouija Boards. You need someone who knows how to dispose of it properly to take care of it for you or you could be haunted for many years. I will offer myself to undertake this arduous and dangerous task. It can be hazardous to say the least, and I see no reason for you to do it yourself. I have the knowledge to do it properly and fairly safely, as if disposing of a Ouija is ever safe. Let me know and I'll give you my mailing address and will even cover the shipping.

Looks really good dude.

Actually this brings to mind the Signed Page. if you guys remember I posted the link for the signed first trades of The Terror. Well again he's getting Simmons to sign Drood. Once again it's only 20 copies. Dan must not like to sign a lot of copies. Anyway I'll post the link again, since I know there are Dan Simmons collectors here.

Playphish has an introduction in another thread.

Haha... no worries Karen. I live with Audrey and Michael quite a bit throughout the year here in Danbury. I help Audrey with her website, did the last few emails for her, do the color correcting and printing of Michael's giclees, as well as various home renovation projects. Kind of the jack of all trades around here. I call Audrey 'Mom'. Been working for them on and off for the last 14 years or so, whenever I'm in town. Been living with them on and off for the last few years after I sold my house here in Danbury. Their son moved out to go to college and I moved in. :)

Had some cool stuff waiting upon my arrival.

SubPress Lettered Thumbprint (N) by Joe Hill

My AE LSoE #s 2529 & 2530 (Sadly, no remarques)

And the Gunslinger print #22 framed from Betts.

Will try to post some pics in my collection thread later this week, got a LOT of paperwork to catch up on, not the least of which is my expenses.

Disappointing to hear no one on the board has acquired a LSoE remarque,
hopefully one will show up soon...

Also an aside, I've been reading an ARC of SubPress' edition of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

I assume the posters were shipped in a tube. That doesn't totally protect it though and if the tube is big enough there is a lot of sliding back and forth. Thus the damages. I am sure the seller thought it safe in the tube. The best way to ship a poster in a tube is to fill the tube with some stuffing (like the styrophome peanuts) to keep the poster from sliding back and forth!

I speak from experience here! :-)

Interesting that you should say that.
I had just sent this message to the seller;
"I received the poster yesterday and found the edges on one side a bit crinkled. As it is a poster, I understand these things can happen in shipping. It will be a reminder to me That if I ever mail something like this I will make an effort to see it is packed so it can not slide in the tube. Jim"

Haha, yes, unabated, but the price points on the things I'm getting are significantly lower ;) Maybe if I get this job I am interviewing for later today I can go back to the higher priced items!

And Erick--Way cool!! I don't think I'll ever reach the point in my collecting to hold a monopoly on a certain book:P

Nice acquisition, Super Sam!

I don't really have a solution to a bumped corner. Sometimes, if it's an outside corner (not on the binding) you could straighten it out and put a heavy weight on it to "press" it for a while, but that doesn't always work.

I heard that each of the tables at the party were named after a King book. Hence, your copy of the test has the heading "The Stand" since the participants were sitting at the table named "The Stand." My copy of the quiz is from the "Misery" table and has that at the top of the page.

From Stephenkkingcollector (http://www.stephenkingcollector.com/limited/newrap.html):

The Rap was given out at the 25th Anniversary of Carrie on April 6, 1999. The guest list had 120 invitees and Stephen had asked Michael Alpert (designer) to prepare 150 signed copies (non-sequential order) in case there were more needed on the night. 108 people turned up as a few could not make it.

Approximately 28-42 copies were left on the table and thrown out by staff that night. None were recovered from trash. Stephen was so disgusted that drunk guests did this, that he took the remaining 380+ copies and placed them in his office safe in Bangor, to where they remain to this day. The unsuccessful break-in attempt in June 2000 did not get any copies of these chapbooks. There have been approximately 5 donated to Bangor public library since then. Therefore, only 80 copies were taken home from the event and 5 more have been purchased since then from the fundraisers. Of the 500, that is a very small number of copies in private hands.

The envelopes were all given out on the night and what made them unique is that the were covered with silver peace symbols that Michael hand stamped on the chapbooks. Some have 3, 4 or 5 as they were placed arbitrarily. Michael said that the reason this was done was because in the 60s, there was no rules to follow, you just did what ever you felt like. !

Also handed out at the party were:
-- A signed copy of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon ( in honor of the 25th anniversary of Carrie )
-- The Peace Sign necklace in it's original box with bow on top
-- A Stapled (4 page) 25 question Trivia Quiz

I am both : really happy-excited and disappointed...

I succeed to find a copy of the very very 1st french publication of King : an excerpt of Carrie, published few months before the novel. Dated 1976.
However, there are NO WAYS that i can buy it or owning it, for the simple reason that it's at the national library.
So i requested copies of it. I recieved it today, really excited, happy after weeks of waiting : i am going through the pages, and the last one says "continuing on page 102". They didnt copy it, while in my request i am pretty sure that i said i wanted the whole excerpt, i gave page informations that are maybe not accurate or complete... apparently they didnt take that into account great. I'll probably have to pay again the same price (minimum fare + recorded shipping), for probably only 4-5 pages missing...... :pullhair:
Not really cheap for copies : hoped i could have got the magazine instead or that they could have scanned it...

will call em this afternoon as soon as they open!

That's the only known issue. I've been looking everywhere, and once i even thought i'd get one, but the seller (which is a company gathering archives of newspaper) got back to me saying that they didnt have it anymore...

The information have been published so there are no reasons to hide it, especially since that it would maybe help to find another copy.
It was in the french Cosmopolitan, issue #32, july 1976.
My mistake : i've just checked and this is not the first ever french King appearance, as the book was published in april. But still.

Pictures of several quizzes are at the site.

Were TGWLTG books 2nd printings, or was that from The Haven Foundation sale?

Can we back this bus up...where did 500 come from ?

Tomas from SKCOLLECTOR sent this as a response to my question above:

It's been years since I made the Rap Page, I'll have to dig thru my saved e-mails and see if I can find the context in which this was sent to me. However I can tell you that the number of copies (500) is listed in "Stephen King Collectibles: an Illustrated Price Guide" by George Beahm. Beahm also lists 24 proof copies in addition to the 500.

The way I read it is 500 copies were made with 150 prepped for the party, however only 108 people showed up so only 108 books were handed out; leaving 392 copies.
As far as the 80 copies taken home, 80 would have been the maximum taken home. (108-28 = 80)

Although I'd always prefer to confirm numbers/events with multiple people it's not always possible. If I wind up getting conflicting news I normally pull the info untill I can get a better determination of who is right. At this point though the info doesn't conflict with anything I've seen and the numbers make sense.

Thank you Tomas !!!

Damn, that sucks! :(

Is it the only copy???

What magazine was it in and what issue?

That's the only known issue. I've been looking everywhere, and once i even thought i'd get one, but the seller (which is a company gathering archives of newspaper) got back to me saying that they didnt have it anymore...

The information have been published so there are no reasons to hide it, especially since that it would maybe help to find another copy.
It was in the french Cosmopolitan, issue #32, july 1976.
My mistake : i've just checked and this is not the first ever french King appearance, as the book was published in april. But still.

http://www.journaux-collection.com/cgi-bin/phototag.pl?136693-1.jpg

There's no reason to think anyone would hide it, but someone could have it and not know that it was anything special. Maybe one day one will turn up and you'll be lucky. Thanks for posting it.

I succeed to find a copy of the very very 1st french publication of King : an excerpt of Carrie, published few months before the novel. Dated 1976.
However, there are NO WAYS that i can buy it or owning it, for the simple reason that it's at the national library.

You've lived in Scotland for a while! Were you not tought to "do a runner"? i.e steal it, and run out the door. :)

LOL! In Scotland, I've worked in a wine shop... never had to deal with a runner lol (I admit : i was living in glasgow lol).
and I am an honnest guy ;-)

Tempted, but unfortunately i live too far away from the National Library.. and they have my details so would be stupid... But I plann to go to live in Paris from september
But if i was able to find a copy in a smaller library, there are chances that i would accidentally lose it...

That reminds me (on TDT i guess) a member that had a dilemma about a deluxe Joe Hill book found at the local library... Dunno what he finally did lol

How is the shinkwrap? Can be removed and placed again once I check if I have remarques? Or does it have to be broken?

I want to shinkwrap them again.

Ari, almost any print/copy shop should have the shrinkwrap machine and would charge a dollar or two to re-shrinkwrap it.

It cost an arm and a leg to frame it, but it was totally worth the price. I love the frame shop downtown - I took that Boehmke print there too - the woman there is amazing - you show her the thing you want framed, she asks you questions about your tastes and the colors in your house, etc. and in five minutes she pulls out the perfect frame/mat for the thing.

I just got back from the Dan Simmons signing of DROOD.

Dan was a very nice guy....did a lot of chatting.

There were only about five people ahead of me when I got in line, and when I left there were only three behind me.

As Dan was signing a copy of Night Visions 5 for the guy ahead of me, he told us that he never saw a dime from that book. He also mentioned that Stephen King was once a guest in his house for three days, but he never thought to have him sign his copy of NV5. I wish I had thought to bring mine!

The guy two places ahead of me asked if he would do a drawing in his book, and Dan said he would be happy to (I saw Jerome had received one as well). When my turn came up, I asked for one too!

He told me it was a DROODLE. :P

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/3118/picture090.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

As he was drawing it, he said "Now, I am not saying this is a picture of Drood, but then again, I am not saying it's not. :P

Here is a picture of Dan "Droodling" in my book.

Been wanting to pick up a few things myself, but haven't had the time to do the research required.
Still wanting to finish a deal with Hutch for a 1st Stand, but I kinda dropped of the face of the planet as far as anything personal is concerned.

Hoping to be back steady online by mid-March...
Hope springs eternal.

I got my copy of the signed Drood today, and I also got a proof of Legacies. (I've posted a scan of it in my Collections thread.)

Thanks, David, for the proof!

How lucky! I'm gonna try to buy one of the Dan Simmons' signed books, but I wanted to be dedicated to me and with a sketch. I received my new CC today, so I'll try to see if I can buy directly from the bookstore of the next signings.
