Here is one wall in my collection room.
I had to install these cases and tether them to the wall-California-earthquake country. Nothing fancy about the cases-spent the money on books. Mostly these hold my trades, and a few other items.

I know this has probably been said a hundred times already, but as I'm new to the forum, I still wanted to say

OMG!!!

Nice. Very Nice.

Impressive indeed. All due respect, my fellow collectors, but I'll just never understand having multiple copies of the same book.

Impressive indeed. All due respect, my fellow collectors, but I'll just never understand having multiple copies of the same book.

There was a time that I didn't either.... but sometimes if one is good, two is better!

As an example, the centrepiece of my collection is my Michael Slade books, for a while I had four copies of every hardcover (US and UK) - one 1st, one flatsigned 1st, one inscribed 1st, and one 1st inscribed to myself. Due to space constraints, I have shaved that down to just the inscribed and personally inscribed copies.

But still, I see the allure.

Besides who doesn't need 19 signed limited DT sets?

I collect US & UK first's so I can see that. If either one is signed, I pull the un-signed one and sell it. I'm also guilty of a few "AE" copies, but 6 or 8 of what appears to be the same book? I don't get that. I'm sure there is a good reason though. Maybe you could share? Are there that many differences? or, is it due to each individual printing?

Impressive, nevertheless.

I feel the same way. If each book was different like e_taylor mentioned above, with one being a 1/1, one signed, one inscribed, etc., then that seems OK since they all have differences. I don't understand the need for 20 copies of a regular 1/1. Especially SK books. I mean, 20 copies of UtD would take up a whole bookshelf! But, everyone collects what and how they want, so as long as the collection is enjoyed by the collector, I think it is just fine.

Regarding the multiple copies of a volume. I have the following editions of Under the Dome:

US Proof
UK Proof
US hardcover advance reading copy (w/o dust jacket)
US trade edition with white lettering (actually, I have two of these--one is my reading copy)
US trade edition with dark lettering
US Signed trade edition
US Collector's edition
US signed Collector's edition
US signed limited
UK signed limited
UK signed limited still in shrinkwrap
UK trade edition
UK promotional booklet
UK paperback advance reader copy w/publisher's letter
UK 5 paperback set with postcards (100 copies printed) still in shrinkwrap

I consider each of these to be separate editions.

Oh I agree totally!!! I wasn't rying to cast any aspersions, its each individuals private collection and therefore solely their rules. Actually I was more looking to learn something.

John's post is very illustrative. I have some proof's as well and I consider them seperate editions, as I would if I had ARC's as well. I also fall victim to the "Collector" edition. Overall, my wife has drawn the line at 2 1/2 book cases so I guess I'm forced to be more discerning about what I collect than anything else!!!! LOL

Wow! That's truly impressive, John. I only have the standard Collector's ($75/25000), the white text trade, the grey text trade and a signed white text trade (all US). Do you mind if I ask how you got the signed collector's? I'm assuming this is not the same as the signed limited ($200/1500). I didn't know King signed any of the standard collector's edition! Can't be too many, if he did! That's great that you managed to get one.

This little treat arrived in the mail a few says ago: S/L The Best Of Larry Niven. This is one more addition to my signed influences in science fiction collection. I'm trying to collect signatures (preference to signed firsts or S/Ls) from all the really big SF names, especially those that particularly influenced my reading through the years...

Ooh, even better than my last one! This came today, the Gauntlet Press S/L of Masks by Ray Bradbury. Pretty cool little book with 6 unpublished short stories (besides the novel) and lots of little ephemera and doodles from Bradbury. Gotta love half-price sales! I reaaallly love Bradbury (almost more than King! Shhhhh...), if I were a girl, I'd totally do naughty things to Ray Bradbury (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1IxOS4VzKM).

You gotta find and read those "Superman" stories. It was in an old anthology book I forget the name of, but worth looking for to read!!!! You'll love it!!!

Yes the Oy was a gift, certainly not what I was expecting when Audrey said she and Michael had something saved for me, someday it will be a tattoo on my right calf (to match my Oy on my left calf)

WOW!!!

You guys are really making it difficult to follow but here goes...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feNoV47XXug

The video will explain...but here's the story anyway...

One of four special editions of Tom Clancy's blockbuster new thriller, Dead or Alive. This signed first edition is one of four books delivered to Tower of London on Monday 6 December 2010 by the Parachute Regiment's world famous parachute display team, The Red Devils. It comes in a black gun case-style foam-lined case, that also contains a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, an engraved silver AK-47 bullet in a silver presentation tin, and a set of engraved dog tags. These four special editions are being auctioned off in aid of the Parachute Regiment Charity.

As usual, I'm having problems downloading the photos...sorry...I hope what you see in the video gives you an idea of what this is.

Now I'm wondering, how does one go about finding just the cover of a book?

Christmas in the Mulleins house has been awesome and full of surprises:

First Up:

My oldest daughter commissioned a local artist to do this piece for me. (my pictures won’t do it justice)
The artist used the imperfections in the wood for faces, items, etc. You have to sit there and stare at it to see all the different pictures within the painting.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/668/medium/Painting_from_Kendra.jpg

Next Up:

My wife with the help of a sneaky friend from here worked with artist Don Maitz to do this for me:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/668/medium/Don_Maitz.jpg

And:

A little bit of Christmas silliness going on in the Mulleins house. My wife surprised me with this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/668/medium/Emu_Egg.jpg

Nice additions to the pride and joy thread, but truth be told, my family is my pride and joy.

I couldn’t or wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Merry Christmas

Congratulations Karen! I hope you enjoy it. Last summer my wife fell and broke both wrists. She is a librarian and avid reader who once told me she liked the feel of holding a book and didn't think she would ever use a Kindle. Because she couldn't hold a book with her arms in casts I bought a Kindle for her thinking that even if she only used it for six weeks it would be worth the cost. The bottom line is that she loves that thing and hasn't read a "real" book since. Hope you enjoy your Nook as much as my wife likes her Kindle.

My kids all pitched in (nop pun intended) and got me a Mariano Rivera signed baseball from Christmas. Each of my boys has a dozen or so signed balls that I give them for Christmas every year, but this is my first one. They originally thought asbout getting me a Mickey mantle, but the cost was just way over their budget. As it is, its probalby the most they have collectivley spent on me for Christmas ever with the Rivera ball. It was purchased through Stei9ner Sprots so we are 100% confident on th esignature. I'll get a pic up soon for those few Yankees fans here!

I also started a new tradtion for my grandson Tommy. He is 7 months old. I iwll be giving him a signed ball for Christmas every year. The criteria is that the sig has to be a rookie that year. Gave him Mike Stanton (Marlins) this year. I also gave his Dad, my son in law a Josh Johnson (Marlins) signed ball as Marlins is his fave team! And my daughter and spon ain law gave Tommy an Austin Jackson (anotyher rookie )signed ball. By the time he is really interested in baseball (and he will :P ) he should have a pretty nice collection.

I find I read just as many printed book as I used to, even with Kindle 3 the screen is still very dark compared to paper, which can be a problem here with all the overcast days we have. But really I still have to read paper books because I have such a huge backlog to get through.

Fairly hard to find Nov. 73 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST. I think this has King's first professional non-fiction article (only preceded by the college stuff, "King's Garbage Truck," etc.). First copy I have ever had that didn't have a mailing label stuck to the front cover or (worse) a mailing label that has been torn off leaving permanent residue.

Article titled "The Horror Market Writer And The Ten Bears" tells about writing and getting published (this is all pre-CARRIE). King is even helpful enough at the end to give the prospective writer the mailing addresses for Gent, Cavalier, Sir! and other adult magazines, as well as Warren Publishing, Marvel Comics and others.

Well, as you can see the part of my brain that was responsible for actually setting up the snipe bid had apparently gone to bed a couple of days earlier.

This is the second to last, and arguably the most expensive, limited I needed to complete my China Miéville (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?11737-Book-Collection-thegreattim&p=582203&viewfull=1#post582203) S/L collection. I was lucky enough to find a copy at what I consider to be an extremely fair OBO eBay price. Now if I could just find someone willing to sell me the Easton Press edition of The Scar like that!

The Tain, China's first S/L unless I am mistaken. A hardcover S/L limited to 400 copies, by PS Publishing.

An interesting book. Not a "pride and joy" but a new acquisition. Maybe we should have a thread for new stuff that is not really a "pride and joy"?

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/carrienewdj3.jpg

I bought it for next to nothing on eBay recently. Normally I wouldn't have bothered but the spine of the dust jacket caught my eye. The title on the spine is horizontal and extends too far onto the front and back panels to be read easily. This is a trial dust jacket and the final dust jacket had the title running vertically so you could more easily see it when it was shelved.

Peter Schneider who used to work at Doubleday sold a few of us collectors books with the trial dust jackets several years ago. I was under the impression that none were released to the retail market. But, who knows? The seller of this book told me she bought it at a "state sale."

Below are some older photos of both the trial and finished states of the dust jacket.

What's funny is that on the other three books with that type of DJ (Salem's Lot, The Shining, and Night Shift), the title is horizontal, but it fits on the spine. My "vertical" Carrie look out of place now..gotta find me a horizontal one.

I always thought this thread should be renamed recent acquisitions or something similar. Because I don't like to post anything I get in this thread as none of its special enough to be called a pride&joy, just like standard books that I think are cool but not particularly rare. Like I don't want to post a pic of a $10 book and have people think Thats a pride and joy?!?, what's he posting it in here for?.

When this board started (after the demise of the old TheDarkTower.net) this thread was named "New Pride and Joy" because the similar thread on the old board was named "Recent Acquisitions". I always just assumed the originators of this thread wanted to distinguish it from the old one.

I've got two different ones--both with different drawings but only one signed by Anderson. The unsigned one is entitled "Taheen". Seven were first offered by Fred back in 2004 and I was high bidder so I got to pick the one I wanted. The others are "Door", "Horse", "Rose" (which seems to be the one you show here), "Sneetch", "Thunderclap" and "Turtle". The other I got from Greg (shibus) in 2009. My Skeleton Crew arrived. It's not in as great of shape as the one posted on the previous page but I like it nonetheless. Jerome's copy is priced reasonably. My copy was $615 w/ shipping in from UK.

It's hard to believe the Skeleton Crew limited is 25 years old already. I'm glad there's people out there taking good care and passing them on.
