I only found it at the third WHSmith store I went to. But then it was half price so it was worth it.

It's been a good year. I recently won this baby on eBay for $185. It has a very minor blemish on the case, but otherwise it's perfect:

Between this, Prime Evil, and Gunslinger Audio, I have bought three S/Ls for less than $400 (total) recently.

Anyone have a picture handy of a Desperation where you can clearly see the front corners of the traycase? My first one had 3 out of four corners bumped, so I knew there was an issue, but this one the back two are fine and the front two look just like my last one, so now I'm wondering if they just look kinda bent over and shitty naturally. My other books that have similar traycases don't look like that, but I figured I'd ask.

Edit: here's the corners:

Carefully push them back into form.

Maybe that's the thing? You can push em around all you want, it kinda feels like pudding in there. It doesn't feel like hard cardboard with a crease in it, it feels pretty mushy.

I'm not sure it even really matters for this book (but it would matter for the next I purchase, third times the charm?). I could reglue the traycase and you wouldn't be able to tell (hell, it'd probably even be better than new), but I'm not sure I want to hassle with it. Nothing on the traycase is ripped or anything. Not even any traces of the opposing surface, it separated cleanly.

Yeah, SubPress is pretty stingy when it comes to slipcases for some reason. I'm always disappointed when I receive a book that was advertised with a slipcase and it's completely plain with no text (The Windup Girl or Deathbird Stories), is a multi-book set like yours and doesn't have one, or is such a nice production in general, that it should come with one (the Hyperion books com to mind). Just a shame SP doesn't put a little more effort into them is all.

Either way, congrats of the set! They're nice looking books.

Thanks! But if it's okay with you, I think I will keep this one for myself! Ha ha. To answer your question though, I recently decided to focus on ARC's since I'm pretty much complete with my collection of 1sts.

The 90 number was actually an estimate of how many more ARC's I need. I know it's more than 90 and less than 100. That's for a complete collection. Or as complete as I could hope to get it. I already have 45 different ARC's including this one. But there's still 90+ out there in both US and UK ARC's/proofs.

A bit long-winded but that's what I was meaning in my post.

Yeah that's what I thought. Good luck in your quest! I deliberately set very specific proof/ARC goals for myself (I used to try and find them all, got frustrated and sold most of what I had - stupid, of course!). Now, the only ones I am still looking for are a number of early UK proofs and a US IT proof.

My proof collection is pretty decent but nowhere near as impressive as those of John (jhanic), Bob (carlosdetweiller) or Mike (Pasiuk), to name a few of our fellow members. I have US proofs of all novels from the Dead Zone to Insomnia, plus Dr. Sleep and Mr. Mercedes but excluding IT. My holy grails would be the Doubleday proofs but that ain't going to happen. UK-wise I'm aiming for the same timeframe (Dead Zone - Insomnia) but I only have Firestarter, Misery and The Dark Half so far (exceptions to my rule are the UK proofs of From A Buick 8 and Dreamcatcher, which I also own).

Thought I'd post this. I really like collecting paperback 1st's, especially the early ones. I don't know if I'm correct in saying this, but it seems to me that they are harder to find than some signed/limited books.

Anyway, this is a recent one that brought a smile to my face. It appears unread, no spine crease and overall in really good shape considering the age of the book.

Of course, the other nice thing about the paperbacks is that they generally won't break the bank like some of the signed limited books, and yet they seem to bring about the same amount of P&J as those that cost a whole lot more.

For missing items the seller must file. For damaged items either person can file.

I would tell the seller I wanted a refund with return postage, and for that I would not give him negative feedback. If he refused I would open an eBay case. They will require the seller to refund the purchase price and original shipping. The seller can then try to convince the Post Office that the packaging was sufficient. (Good luck with that!)

Case had already been opened. Guy and I went back and forth like 6 times. I uploaded 10 pictures or so of how it was packed, the damage, what a non damaged traycase looks like, and what a properly packaged book looks like (I used Howie's SLs which had just arrived from SP and were packed very nicely). After I think 4 or 5 days you can "escalate" the case and eBay will rule on it. They ruled in my favor in less than 24 hours and are also paying for return shipping via UPS.

I hope I can still leave the guy negative feedback, but I'm not sure. People deserve to know how he does business. Idiot tried to blame the damage on me because my mail was held at the time so I didn't receive the book immediately.

Thanks John...

Love it! I also collect (early) 1st printing PBs but I focus on US editions. I do own a NF UK Carrie PB, though.

That's great Michaël. I have two UK Carrie PB 1st's, but one is in really really really really bad shape, and the other one is just in really bad shape! Would like to see your NF copy some time!

It's my understanding that the book is sold only at airports, targeting the traveler market who may not want to carry around a hardcover. It looks like a standard trade paperback to me with "First Hodder trade paperback edition June 2014" on the CP page. ISBN is 9781444788631.

Here's some shots if it's of interest:

Here is my first and best awesome deal story in a long time. Maybe 4 Saturdays ago I am watching an afternoon hockey game and checking ebay maybe every 15 minutes. Suddenly (I feel like i'm in the 5th grade starting a sentnce with"suddenly" but it fits)... So suddenly, I see that someone is selling a professionally framed beautiful signed and numbered copy of the Rainy Season print for $400. I scramble for the "buy it now" button on my iPad and My heart starts beating as i begin to imagine others reaching towards their own buy it now buttons. But, I win! The print arrives maybe 4 days later and it is beautiful and I happily put it up on the wall next to my SK collection. I first saw this print years and years ago. Always wanted it but never imagined that I would acquire at a price i was willing to pay. When I picked this up via Ebay for $400 i thought "this is an awesome deal story worthy of sharing!"

But, it turns out to only be the beginning.

Within minutes the seller contacts me to offer me a second numbered print - "Thayer Goes to Hell" by Stephen Gervais, numbered 3 of 200 and signed by Stephen Gervais. I had never seen this print before and I'm not crazy about it. Not my favorite print, costly to get shipped to Canada. I pass.

He contacts me again and it turns out he is former collector, moving off the continent and is really needing to move this quickly. In the course of emails he tells me he also has a few college publications signed by King that he bought through Burt Hatlen and would I be interested in maybe buying them plus the Talisman print. The items are Moth (signed 3 times); Ubris (signed twice); and Contraband 1 (signed once). Pictures follow and it is clear they are the real deal and signed likely in early 80s. Of course, I want the books but expect they are out of my price range. I make an offer not expecting him to accept...but he does. Below what he could have gotten, but I think he is motivated by desire to sell and wanting to put the items into a collection and not in hands of a reseller. So, long story short I take all 3 college publications and the second print (which looks far cooler in person).

That is the story of how I added a bunch of stuff I never thought I would have to my collection (6 more SK signatures) for much less than I ever thought I would pay. Also i think show how cool the community of collectors actually is. First awesome deal story in a long time, unexpected, and hopefully makes a few of you smile as it did me.

Paul

I agree. Those are weird looking 8s, by french standards.
I remember having a similar discussion with my girlfriend, years back.

For instance, the "scottish" 7 looked, to me, like a 1 (without a line in the middle). The 1 were also different.

Another similar discussion was about how she learned to count with the fingers...
We, in France, do every single finger in order, from the thumb.
Scots? Apparently not. If i remember correctly : thumb. Thumb folded but unfolded the next 2 fingers. Adding the following one. Then the last one. And back to unfolding the very first...

Weirdos :p

Those difference of cultures are interesting discussion subjects :)

Scots? Apparently not. If i remember correctly : thumb. Thumb folded but unfolded the next 2 fingers. Adding the following one. Then the last one. And back to unfolding the very first...

Weirdos :p

Those difference of cultures are interesting discussion subjects :)

In the US we learned to count from a closed fist with the index finger first, the middle second, "ring" finger third, "pinky" fourth and thumb last.

Most people in the US write the number 8 by starting and finishing at the top in one smooth motion. Some (mostly girls trying to be cute) write it like a snowman; two circles one on top of the other.

Guys, it's a Dutch book, numbered by a fellow Dutchman.
Those eights aren't weird looking, they're Dutch.

(ok, be my guest........)

sk

What do eights look like when you type them on a Dutch computer?

biomieg
06-27-2014, 10:52 PM
I really don't see why 'dutch eights' (although I'm sure they're not unique to our country) don't look like eights at all to you guys. I understand that they probably look a little different than yours, but unrecognizable?

Brian's description of American eights starting and finishing at the top gives me an idea of what they look like and I would definitely recognize them as being eights. Ours are basically like a closed S. Nothing weird about that, just a different starting point.

I want to add that in Jerome's book the lower part of the eight is relatively small compared to the top part. They usually have the snowman shape with a larger bottom and smaller top loop. The one in the book is simply that person's particular style of writing.

And there's no such thing as a Dutch computer or keyboard with weird eights. The only difference between American and Dutch computers is the keyboard layout.

In fact, if I type an 8 here on the TDT forum, using the standard settings of the forum software and on a US iPad Mini Retina, it looks like a slender version of the 'Dutch closed S' type, with the top and bottom loops of equal size. It does not look like an eight starting and finishing at the top because then you would have the line crossing itself in an x-shape in the middle.

... man, I love to jibber-jabber about jibber-jabber!

Back on topic....

My signature has shown "Wanted: Nothing I can afford right now" for a while. My new Pride and Joy is the reason for that.
This is by far the most I have ever spent on a single book, compared to some lettered and S/L's it's not in the same ball park, but for me it represents a commitment to my collection that I hadn't reached before. Many, many thanks to Tom (Tito Villa) for his patience and time holding this book whilst I raised the required funds.

I present a pretty damn nice, very near fine copy of a 1st/1st Night Shift!

I am glad to see the book survived. The photos are a great example of what can happen to an international shipment. I recently received a shipment where the sell wrapped the item in a single layer of bubble wrap and a plastic bag! They were not only surprised that there was damage, they took no responsibility for it. Luckily the online auction company gave me a full refund including shipping cost. I wish I had photos like yours to send them at the time.

That's shocking. Not the damage, but the fact the book survived.

I think the polystyrene chips cushioned the force to protect the book. There was enough force to bump the corners of the DJ, crease from the lower right corner to 2/3rds across the front cover through the top of the VE of the title to the eye in the sky and multiple crinkles along the margin of the flap of the back cover. Good packing by CD.

I agree with Br!an, however with THIS book, I would leave the sticker directly on the cover because that is how it came from the publisher.

For those not familiar with it, it is a 1/100 signed limited produced by BCE. Very rare.
