I got something pretty cool in the mail today which has been about a month and a half in the making. How are your supersleuth abilities? In the finest teaser tradition, over the next few days I'll post some partial photos; see if you can guess what it is. Warning: All is not as it appears to be.

Yes! It's the preliminary sketch for the cover of The Wind Through the Keyhole!!!!

Not!

My new favorite book. I followed Jerome's lead and ordered a lettered edition of THE WOMAN. I got copy "O" with human (I guess) vertebrae on the cover. The binding really does look like human skin. I wonder what other bones were used on these?

Bob, that looks great. The way the light hits it in that pic makes it look undeniably like human skin. And I like the vertebrae. You know ... this book has been my inspiration for what I'm eventually going to do with my Skeleton Crew treasure chest. :)

Two points to the man in the Orange!

It is indeed some artwork by our good friend Harrison Ryan (who I'm quite sure appreciates the comparisons to Whelan and Lee!). That, however, answers only a part of the riddle ... you've got a who, but not a what. Remember, all is not as it appears!

If nobody gets it today, I'll post three clues tomorrow before revealing all!

(And before anybody says it, ummmm, no ... that's not what I meant by revealing all!)

Shannon
05-20-2011, 01:49 AM
Rahfa, the book looks great, I have a question though ... If you send your book to publishers and such, what's keeping them from taking it from you and publishing it as their own? Is your work copyrighted or anything like that? I know nothing of the process ...

George, the first thing I thought when I saw the first image was "Ah, that's the lightning bolt from the Justin Brooks book!" but that's probably only because it's sitting next to me, lol. Saving and compiling all the teasers right now ...

Got it. Waste Lands. Blaine with people looking out the windows (didn't notice that before) on a track, maybe on a high bridge going over a grand canyon-like bottom, lightning in the background. How'd I do? :)

Very impressive my big bank account friend! You pretty much nailed it. I'll put you at 85% for this portion of the riddle (which was a clue in itself, by the way). It is indeed Blaine on a high bridge over a canyon-like bottom, but no lightning and no people in the windows (the lightning crop was on purpose, to mislead!). But remember, once again, all is not as it appears. So before all is revealed, one final clue ... I think you'll get this pretty fast.

Alright! My new pride and joy is a traycase for my Dameron-remarqued The Waste Lands, courtesy of our good friend Dick Olson, with original artwork of Blaine by Harrison Ryan. Before you see the final piece, I thought you’d like to see the sequence of artwork and ideas leading up to it.

When I approached him about doing a sketch, he was all enthusiasm (I caught him on a good day :) ). For those of you who don’t know, Ryan is a freelance artist who does fantastic work; moreover, he’s great to work with. Over the course of a few weeks we went back and forth with design ideas. I explained my vision of Blaine blasting, right to left, viewed from slightly below, through a canyon … and he hit the inks. Here was the very first draft, with several viewpoints:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/George_the_Mono_1.jpg

He got exactly what I was picturing with the upper left drawing, but I actually liked the one in the lower left better (going left to right and viewed from above). I particularly liked the way he curved the walls over and under, which to me gave the appearance of Blaine shooting through an underground tunnel, which lead to this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Waste-Lands-case-rough_2.jpg

I suggested a few changes (longer speed lines, etc.) and Ryan added his own touches, which lead to this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Blaine2revised_3.jpg

This is my favorite version as a stand-alone piece of art. His personal influences are obvious in the canyon floor and walls (which look like waves and water) and the great detail in Blaine. One problem though; all of that won’t crossover to an engraving! Shadows won’t work, neither will many fine lines. So, back to the drawing board (ha ha). Harrison opted to curve the track, add a pylon or two, add shark's teeth to make him look evil, add some Dameron-esque critters, and simplify Blaine:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Blaine_is_a_Pain_4.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Blaine_is_a_PainRECOMP_5.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Blaine_Final_6.jpg

I really liked this last one, and knew that we were close, so we went for full ink …

(edit: forgot to mention, take a look at the side windows ... roman numeral III, for DT III ... Ryan's idea, along with the skull in the window to make him look a little insane)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Blaine_Inkfinal_7.jpg

… and started thinking about a frame. Harrison thought some small icons in the corners would be appropriate; a gun, a rose, a key, etc. I wanted to go with something different, something directly related to Blaine. I thought about making the frame itself from some flying critters, have it so that they were circling and you were looking down through them at Blaine. “Too busy” said Ryan. I wanted to put some little critters in the corners:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Final_with_Critter_Frame_9.jpg

Yuck, said Ryan.

Finally I came across Blaine’s route map, and modified it into a frame:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Map_Frame_8.jpg

“I like it!” said Ryan. I think he was starting to get tired of listening to me. We incorporated the map:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Final_with_Map_Frame_High_Tower_Text_8_10.jpg

“Looks great, but let’s lose the town names … too cluttered” said Ryan. “Yes, my liege” I muttered.

And just like that, we had a final:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Waste_Lands_Case_Art300dpi_11.jpg

Fired it off to Dick, after whcih I spent countless minutes pouring over pictures of wood grains and liner colors, until I finally said, “Dick, I wouldn’t know cherry from oak from a telephone pole … just make me a pretty one”. Dick tried to flip me off, but couldn’t (heh heh).

A few more e-mails, a week’s wait for the mail, and … voila:

that looks a lot like mine... a vertebrae and some other bone that I don't recognize (I've already forgotten what letter I got)
I'm a bit uneasy about displaying the traycase in the cage... it looks really great... but I think over time the metal from the cage will mark/score into the case's fabric.... or worse, rust on it.
I have it displayed that way now.... but think I'm going to "Free" the Bone Book

I might get a bumper sticker that says that...

also... I do love the fact that the binding looks just like human skin....

in fact... I'm thinking about asking Ned Dameron to tattoo my Bone Book - maybe a rose - nah that's reserved for darktowers....

Think I'll have him just do a trampstamp on the lower back cover.

BTW.... very nice wood traycase above! very very nice!

I actually was unable to figure out how to get the cage around the traycase. And I was very hesitant about forcing it and possibly damaging the velour fabric on the traycase. I went to bed very puzzled last night. I must have been dreaming about it because I woke up at 2:30AM with an "AHA moment." Went downstairs and got it installed in just a couple of minutes. I found the process to be a bit tricky.

Sorry if some aren't as viewable as others, it is REALLY difficult to get the lighting and contrast just right when shooting that large an area. But fret not, detailed pics including the the stories/essays inside will be uploaded into my collection thread soon ... starting now, lol

Bottom row, first picture: What is in the TV Guide just to the left of the TV Guide with Pernell Roberts on the cover? What is in the F&SF just to the right of Pernell Roberts? I don't think I have either of those.

Not too sure who Pernell Roberts is, sorry, but if you're talking about the TV Guide all the way to the left, this one:

It has a letter in it from Stephen King:

And the F&SF one just has a review of Different Seasons in it. I don't seek reviews, interviews, or stories ON King's life/movies/books out, but sometimes they are included in some of the bundles I buy.

"What is in the TV Guide just to the left of the TV Guide with Pernell Roberts on the cover? What is in the F&SF just to the right of Pernell Roberts?"

The F&SF is to the right of the guy he named that I don't know who it is. And then the TV Guide in question is to the left of the guy he named that I don't know who it is ... Therefore the TV Guide in question is two spots to the left of F&SF.

You got it correct. Even with my poor description. I didn't recognize Tom Selleck on that cover or I would have identified it that way. I wasn't aware of that letter in that issue so now I'll have to try to find one. Thanks.

Congratulations on all the great stuff, everyone.

I absolutely love that custom traycase for THE WASTELANDS! You all make a great design team!

Welcome to Larry from Bloodletting! Glad to have you here. The photos of THE WOMAN lettered editions are thoroughly creepy - as intended.

Thanks for all the kind words about the traycase everybody; it was a labor of love and the final product shows it! I can't praise Ryan and Dick enough; I had an idea and they turned it into reality. If you've got an idea for something you'd like to have done, this is the team for you ... just fire them a PM and see what they can create! (And their prices are good too!!!)

I'm sure when you're surrounded by original artwork, handwritten manuscripts, prototypes of lettered editions, Asbestos Firestarters, Plants, first state 'Salem's Lot dustjackets (I'm guessing, I don't really know Bob's entire collection ... I should really check out his Collections thread ...) ... it's understandable that a TV Guide from 1983 might slip through the cracks.

All I gotta say is ... HA, and the gap between us closes EVEN MORE, Super Collector!

I think in the back of my mind somewhere I knew there was another TV Guide with a letter from King in it. But I never actually searched for it. When I saw Shannon's picture I saw a TV Guide that I didn't recognize so that's why I asked. I've got a nice copy coming from eBay that I bought yesterday as soon as he told me what was in it. I think there is a Newsweek magazine with a letter from King that I don't have too. There are actually a LOT of non-fiction appearances that I don't have.

I am still unsure about what to do with King's non-fiction, collecting-wise. I loved the essays/forewords/afterwords etc. that I've read and I would want to collect similar pieces but I guess I'm not really interested in the more 'trivial' stuff like the EW columns.

How do you determine what is trivial and what is not trivial? Is it content, issue price, number of copies in existence?

I've always maintained that if one of King's THE POP OF KING essays was not published in EW but was published instead in some obscure fanzine that only had 50 copies total, collectors would be all over themselves trying to get a copy. It would be the same general content as an EW column but just with fewer copies available. It would likely become a legendary collectible.

I always thought the EW columns were highly significant nonfiction essays for King fans and collectors and it was cool because they were so cheap and easy to get. But they seem to be largely dismissed by most collectors on this site.

biomieg

What I meant with trivial in relation to King's non-fiction is purely related to content. I seem to care more for the things King writes about his own work and what makes him 'tick' as a writer than what he writes about pop culture, politics et cetera. Perhaps I should have phrased it differently but that's how I feel about it.

Another reason for being a bit hesitant about collecting King non-fiction is that, even though I'd like to be a completist I can't afford to actually be one and right now, that makes the non-fiction the lowest of my priorities.

It is the lowest of my priorities as well (behind novels and short fiction). Just a step above interviews and articles about King, but I don't actively seek those out; just pick up the ones that look interesting.

Some of my favorite King writing has to do with just the things you mentioned: writing about his own work, etc.

King's non-fiction has never been one of my priorities -although I LOVE Danse Macabre- but I'd definitely buy the collected EW columns, when/ifever there will be such a release.
Think there will.

On my way to me now is 150+ Entertainment Weekly magazines, all with the Pop of King articles. I thought I had a lot of them, but apparently, my brain was counting 20 or so as a lot ... lol. I want them to have them. I don't plan on displaying them or anything like that, they'll probably sit in a box. But, it's something else to collect, there is a fairly definite "checklist" for them, and they are relatively easy to get your hands on. After I have them all, that is one less thing to collect. That also goes for something like ... the Castle Rock Newsletters ... the Stephen King Library books ... All just collections within a collection. That's how I view it, anyway. :)

You can get archival plastic bags from comic shops for your EW magazines. Then put them in a box. Honestly though, I'd find a way to display them somehow... custom slipcase, binder with artwork on it etc

Here's a tip: if you go to their "in print books" page, it will look blank, but if you scroll all the way down, you'll find the list; then, if you click on some of the names, you'll be brought to the product page. I actually found it to be kinda fun.

I should also add that both dust jackets are by Ned Dameron, and "Into the Sun" is also illustrated by him.

Just received a pristine Easton Press limited first of The Dead Zone that I picked up on eBay for $99, courtesy of our very own Henry the Tall. On The Collector's website, regarding telling the difference between first and second editions he states "Also you also "might" be able to tell from the color of the end pages and bookmark. On my original copy I found a blue bookmark and endpapers, On the new copies the bookmark seems to be a gold color with off-white endpapers. However I've already heard of one original printing with a gold bookmark, If anyone can clear this up please e-mail me."

My copy has the off-white endpapers and a goldish/orangish ribbon ... just curious if this is commonplace or not. I don't see mention of two states of the first edition in the catalog. Did Easton perhaps reuse some old covers when issuing the reprint? Enquiring minds want to know.

I think there are two states of the first edition. Blue ribbon with blue endpapers and gold ribbon with off-white endpapers. I don't know which (if either) was first.

I agree it's a beautiful book with great interior illustrations. It's too bad this is not a signed edition. It would be perfect if King decided to sign it.

Yes, but then again I wouldn't have picked up a signed for $99 ... I don't think this book has even ever been opened, it's really gorgeous. Always time to get it inscribed, maybe this will be the one I bring to that signing someday!!

I do love that artwork with the boy - very nice!

And again Cemetery Dance has surprised me today with some new Stephen King related promo chapbooks. I don't know what they were used for? Anyway, there are three chapbooks and they are all by Brian Quigley again. They are all pretty beefy at about 40 pages each.

Ink in the Veins Vol 1 - which seems to be on various authors who've done Stephen King literary criticism books in the past.
Ink in the Veins Vol 2 - which has some interview with authors who have books on King. Our own Bev Vincent is one of the interviews.
Drawn into Darkness: The Comic Landscapes of Stephen King - This one is a little misleading. It looks at comics that have influenced King's work (This is not the marvel Dark Tower series or anything new).

I haven't read them yet so I hope my descriptions are accurate, but all three look pretty interesting. Thanks CD!

Can't find it anywhere. You just don't see this one out there! A few on ABEBOOKS for $1,000 +!

Based on limited availability, I'm happy with the price....

Tim
Way to go! Congrats!

Courtesy of my favorite pusher seller. Had this about 10 years ago and sold it to someone who made me a great offer. Then I regretted it ever since, so I've decided to re-add it back to my collection.

As far as his last name, Miller.......Wilson.......whatever.

Just got this limited edition (of 50) cast resin sculpture of Oy by Alex McVey. It's a nice sized piece (about 4.5 inches). Hand painted by McVey.

Well, OK, I know it isn't a Mist Snow Globe but I like him just the same. I think he looks good guarding the Constant Reader Door Sculpture by Rachel Readman.

He is a perfect guardian. The Constant Reader door painted sculpture is one of my favorite King related items EVER. Even after having it for a few years I still stop by it often and appreciate the detail and the beautiful paint job. I'm really looking forward to Rachel's interpretation of Crimson King.

Ricky, please correct your sentence and turn it into me for extra credit after class. This is your last chance or I will have to fail you. Or I'll keep you after school for detention, and just so you know, it's Public Castration Day.

Yeah, I think they're about $130, but now that I've seen the painted ones, well...it kind of pales in comparison.

My sentence is fine. I mean "will" as a verb (you know, like a Will after you die?). Here's an example:

"When Jerome dies, there is little chance that he might will Shannon his snow-globe of The Mist."

Will: "volition, wish, testament, bequeath, leave."

English major, here.

That's a hint ;)

And you are right about the unpainted sculptures, they are somewhat less attractive. But a limitation of 19 on the painted ones makes them, well, limited. They are probably all secured in collections that aren't going to be sold anytime soon. But we can always hope (me too, I'd like to get my hands on one as well).

lol, public castration averted.

I'm about halfway through my English degree, I'm just in a lazy rut right now. I thoroughly enjoy the classes. The discussions, the readings ...

I haven't written anything in months though ... I get ideas all the time, but no drive to put them down on paper. Back in the day I did a mySpace (lol@ mySpace) project entitled "10 Weeks, 10 Women", in which I produced a short semi-autobiographical story every week having something to do with a woman that had been in my life at one point. At first it was just my friends that read them and commented, but then every week it grew and grew and grew. I was even contacted by two small publishing houses and Michael Blake. He wrote Dances With Wolves. I didn't think my stories were anything particularly great, but apparently when people read them they felt the need to pass it on to their friends. I never even finished the project because I ended up spending more time writing responses to the multitude of emails I was getting than I was actually writing.

I might pick it back up one day.

Ricky
06-12-2011, 03:18 PM
Wow. Really? That's impressive. Good for you. Did you submit anything for the CD writing contest? I hadn't written anything in awhile, but that helped me get back into it.

Shannon
06-12-2011, 04:04 PM
I was thinking about entering but again, the laziness took over, lol. I had an idea about time travel and how going back in time alters current events, and how the main character would go back in time and send himself clues on how to live a "better life". And, of course, things wouldn't happen the way the main character wanted, especially when he wanted to return to his life, a now "better life", and he found himself in a world very different than the one he left.

I haven't written too much sci-fi before. Most of my work was about love, lust, romance, wanting, obsession. And I have a half-finished novel about a female serial killer (Lucy, who got dubbed "Lucy-fer", lol), and another about the cycle of life and how things keep repeating. And another idea about the same story from different points of view, and so on and so on.

The main and best advice I got from Michael Blake is to get a small amount of work done and finished before you ever sign with any publishing company. Once you have to beat a deadline, your work suffers and it stops becoming "fun".

Anyway, party time, adios. :)

At this point, I'm looking for # 8, # 32, or # 67.....

Just got a SIGNED 1st/1st Salem's Lot in VG condition I'd say. Well the book is in NF I'd say and the DJ (2nd state!) is in VG to VG-. I'll take pics when I get it from the postman.

Thought I would get it for $200, but ended up paying $400.

Still that is a really good deal, right? StephenKingCollector says $700-$900, but with the signature a bit higher on these older book, correct?

Just flat-signed with no date, but I compared the signature against signatures from "back in the day" and it looks good to me based on all of the super expensive signed copies from around '82.

Also seller is a bookstore in Maine with other expensive copies of Stephen King books (not signed versions too), so I feel good about the seller.

Had to do it. I had a "hole" there in my collection. I had purchased a signed book club edition Salem's Lot but sold it recently for $200 (bought for almost nothing) and have been waiting to "apply" that money to a real 1st/1st, so this ended up being too good to pass up since it was signed too!

Uh oh...not sure if I goofed my deal on Salem's Lot or made it better just now.

The same seller just sold me a 1st/1st Night Shift in VG+ condition it sounds like for $300.

PRICE-CLIPPED DJ though. :( (too be honest, i didn't see that it had the price-clipped jacket...stupid quick impulse buy...I thought it was too good to be true...lol!).

Did I goof up my sweet deal or is $300 for a price-clipped 1st/1st Night Shift in great shape okay? The only two books I needed (other than a matching S/L DT set) were salem's lot and night shift 1st/1st copies, so figured the time was now. This Night Shift is NOT signed.

p.s. Cool, The Five! He is a great author for sure.
