Bob-

That is the first flatsigned one I've seen. There are the 9 he inscribed to Grant and former Grant employees of which I own one. Did you purchase it from someone we know? I think Robert had one at Grant...Steve did not inscribe it for some reason. Could this be the one?

Yes. I bought it from this cute little girl who works at DMG.

I have a Grant 2nd of the Gunslinger coming with this description...

"Book is VG+ condition. No writing, marks, tears or creases. The original price has been cut off in the inside front flap as you can see in the picture. It is a complete copy with the DJ which also has no tears, rips, etc. There is an embossed stamp on the title page that says from the library of RLW, but you can hardly see it."

Now, if we removed the part about the jacket being price clipped and just say the jacket is mint, what should the price have been for me to not have gotten ripped off?

Depends how bad the embossed stamp is. Its hard to say if it actually takes away value or not, but I know myself and many others simply wouldn't look at a copy with the personalized stamp.

With a mint jacket I'd say probably $150- $175.

Capital punishment indeed!!

Why do people do that, it is senseless vandelism. I saw a First Edition copy of The Dead Zone the other, not a real valuable book, but a first edition I did not have yet and the previous owner had a ink stamp "From the library of..." and stamped the inside of both the front and back cover.

Cloysterpete

Oh you think thats bad, I go trawling up at the book sales each week for books and I saw a nice hardback of book 9 in the Wheel of Time series, on closer inspection it was a library book that the seller hadn't bothered returning or had stolen.

Anyway the library itself had stuck in (with that gluey crap that doesn't peel off) the page where it gets stamped, then on another page they had stuck in a a sheet with the library 's seal on. Then they had taped up both the DJ flaps so you couldn't even see half of the beautiful maps that are on the inside.

But not content with that they also wrote in felt tip marker in huge letters the name of the library on the outside of the pages (how to explain this lol). What I mean is when the book is closed and stood upright they wrote along all the top of the book (on the white page edges themselves), then they did the same with the other side (opposite the spine), the only surface they left unmarked was the bottom.

If the library wasn't an hour away I would walk in there and ask them what the point in protecting a book in one of those plastic book jackets is if the book is going to be defaced by the library itself!.

A good friend of mine have a HUGE collection of book. The biggest one i've ever seen, probably the main personal collection about "fantastic" books.

Every time he gets a book, he stamps it for showing that it is in his collection. I was shocked. I didnt ask, but i wonder if he also stamped his 1st french dracula and stuff...

I just dont like when people are writing in books, even with pencil...

About two weeks ago, I put a bid in on this auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300330636232) for a signed 1st Desperation.

There was no picture of the signature, but if you scroll down to the QUESTIONS FROM OTHER MEMBERS portion of the auction, the seller describes the signed bookplate pretty well.

Even though the seller had only two feedbacks at the time, and there was no signature photo, I had a good feeling that this was the real deal.

Well it arrived today, and I am quite happy with my purchase...especially since I do not have a signed copy of Desperation in my collection.

Then I owe you a thanks Darkman!

Since I had seen these bookplates in the past, I knew exactly what the seller was describing.

The seller was a really nice lady, and she did a great job packing it, so I gave her the advice that she should ALWAYS put a picture in her future auctions.

Had there been a picture, I think it would have gone for $75-$100.

The bookplate issue puts some people off (which is why I set the limit at $100), but since it is a Desperation bookplate, I am just fine with it.

So the postman brings not one, not two but 3 packages to me this morning....

The Talisman signed by both ($50.99) arrives and it's in mint condition...had no idea that Straub dated it with "at Book Carnival"....it was in a box that could fit 9 books with enough peanuts to start a peanut store...

I guess the #1631 still in shrink box set ($49.95) was dying to meet the original as they arrived together......

a very nice copy of Night shift arrived as well ($44.00) and it is signed by the legend John D. for some strange reason, and our John D man says it's legit........

I paid $11.12 to those pricks at customs, but for the first time ever, I gave them $12, smiled and told them to keep the change.

I'd like to do this all again tomorrow.

I bought an out-of-print book on Amazon because I was going to meet the author and figured I'd get it signed...couldn't buy it new...

So I get the book...and he has already signed it...worse, it's with a personalized inscription to a prior owner...

WORSE...the book has a second personal inscription. The book had been given as a gift to this prior owner, by someone who made an effort to have the author sign it before giving it away!

So, the book made it to Amazon through a used bookstore - with two personal inscriptions, and already signed!

Luckily, they were on the same non-title page, so I cut the page out with an exacto knife...haha...don't worry, the book's not worth anything (I paid .01, plus $3.99 shipping), and I didn't want the author to feel bad! Haha...

Well I finally got something new by King today. I bought the hardcovers of Treachery and The Long Road Home signed by Robin Furth. She signed them along the artwork like an artist does and she dated them. I liked how she did it. :)

I got mine, too... actually, I got one of each.

Here's a photo of LRH :

I'm having issues with my digital camera, or I'd post them all.

:nana::clap: I got Treachery and Long Road Home Today. I think it was cool the way she signed and dated them. Dating them makes it feel more special.

Sick...my friend gave me a John Densmore (the Doors) Book

His ex-girlfriend went to a signing and he inscribed it "to Carolyne"
The twit scratched out carolyne and wrote "mike" and then wrote a tear jerking sob story letter apologizing for being a cheat and begging for him back and it then says "I know you how much you love the Doors so I hope you will treasure this gift forever on the FFE....????"

TWIT is all I can think of.

Needless to say EX is the key word here...

I haven't posted much of my own acquisitions lately, but I have a couple "updated" Pride & Joys:

This is a hardcover Long Road Home graphic novel signed by Peter David, Jae Lee, Richard Isanove (and remarqued) and Robin Furth. Since I was the gatherer of signatures for the Grand Prize of the "Big Give" for the Haven Foundation fundraiser earlier this year, I brought/sent my own copy along to get signed. Alas, mine stopped at Robin Furth (thanks to Matt who sent it to Australia for me). The winner of the Grand Prize (our own Ari) gets his signed by King and I got Jae Lee to do a remarque as well.

I am a little confused on one item. I looked at Hutch's first print IDs, and "First Published in 1987 by Viking Penguin Inc." Quarter bound in cream cloth, green boards, w/o number line or mention of later printing, Much less 1,000,000 planned. No 18.95 on DJ though. Book looks like it has never been read but DJ is a mess. I'll post the pics and hopefully you guys can tell me this is just a reprint that did not mention other printings.

Yes Dwarf, turns out i have an extra correct 1/1 DJ with $18.95 and code 02182587 decent shape with a little chipping as this DJ is notorious for.

As long as your book doesn't have a small emboss on back bottom corner, it is 1/1 book and the dust jacket will be perfect for it....

PM me and we'll figure out if we can get it to you

Ok, so one mix up down. Anyone here happen to have a link to a pic of a BCE of The Eyes of the dragon? As I told darkman, I am satisfied with our deal regardless of my outcome. I do have a few bce that I bought for my own reasons and can easily tell the difference in the printing than the 1/1. On this one curiosity just keeps getting the best of me. I have googled till my fingers hurt, but can not find a pic of what a bce would look like. According to Darkman, there would be a small emboss on the back corner that would clearly indicate bce. As for that, there is no issue. I just would love to see a copy of the bce. As I have already told Darkman, I am happy with our deal regardless of outcomes, as the DJ I have just does not give the book justice, legit or not.

Darkmaniscoming
08-19-2009, 07:26 PM
OK dwarf....:)
Dont want you up all night...here's the low down:

Earlier editions of titles say pre 70's had a first edition>>>>
then "book club" use to make a smaller and cheaper version that usually you can spot a mile away, they will have no stated edition....it will also have a DJ that says book club edition with no price......people got these cheap throught the mail uaually.

there are a few later printings of books that are same size ~ do not say book club but have no price, no stated edition...people refer to these as book clubs too......
Many king titles come in different forms.....
Later printings with numbers missing in numberline, starting at 3,4 ,5 they may as well be book clubs....useless

There are a few titles that have a small BCOA statement and are same size etc

NOW>>> Many copies of the 1/1 book EYES of Dragon were printed in USA
The books were also exported without DJs as the full color printing of DJs could be done cheaper in the countries they were going....canada would print the dust jacket without price and on a few titles they would print canadian price eg Christine (canadian copy in my store ~ dj price $22.00)
Regulators was printed with 32.99 DJ ~ these are 1/1 books in later (foreign) dust jackets

sometimes they would emboss them with a book club square or circle before shipping...the book pictured is a beautiful copy of "IT" identical 1/1 but painfully branded with a small square....look very closely....top left corner of picture~very small

although this is still a first, many collectors will frown on it and call it book club......
not really book club but marked with the sign of the devil (book club square)
....just kidding.

the book you have is a left over 1/1 printing that got a second issue DJ as it probably didn't sell a million copies over night for the original price....

when you put the dj I give you on it...there is no difference whatsoever as long as you have "first published...." green end papers and a price on the dj you are in....for $15 for this title, if it is indeed unread, you have done well.

hope this helps??????

PS I'm wondering now if we should have a thread where we track how many printings each king title went into before being called a book club...might be neat to figure out????

Ah, Darkman, once again you come through. I guess through all the small chats, I did not come out right and ask you to give me an example. There is indeed no small emboss, and as I said before, the DJ you send me, makes the book way more worthy to me. All I can say is thanks again.

well, since i haven't been able to find a cell proof yet... or an under the dome proof yet... and bob outbid me for the gunslinger proof...

i decided to purchase a few proofs that i was lacking... just bought these guys...

UK proofs
misery
dolores claiborne
the stand uncut (white cover)
song of susannah
insomnia
dark half

US proof
stationary bike

i've currently got 63 US king proofs (56 different titles) plus a couple of king "related" ones

but my UK proof collection has been a bit weak with me having only 8 titles.... so with today's buys i will have 14 UK's - still not that impressive... but at least i'm buying again. (i took the last year off)

coming from the UK/overseas... i hope these arrive alright - i definitely went with airmail - overseas surface mail SUCKS

yeah it's in his list.... i just must be getting really old.... and colorblind...
that sure looks white to me.

waaah.

biomieg

It's the kind of blue that's almost a 'shade of white' if that makes sense ;) it certainly is blue in real life but when taking a picture all colour seems to drain away mysteriously.

*edit* this is what mine looks like, on photo:

I've never seen one on eBay but then again, I've only found out it exists at all when I registered on this forum, so i probably just missed it during my pre-collecting days... nowadays, I get the occasional adrenalin rush when I get a glimpse of what looks like the variant cover, only to see (nanoseconds later) that it's the Gunslinger audio tape...

damn... gotta close my ebay window today.... just added two more UK proofs - nightmares and dreamscapes and wolves of calla.

look out john... here i come! 16 UK proofs and counting....

somebody stop me.... a year without... and now i'm splurging. more More MORE!!!!!

I currently have 35 UK proofs.

Are you sure the proof of The Stand you got is a UK one? The only UK proofs of The Stand are the blue-covered partial proof and one I don't have--a red-covered full proof. The US Stand has the white cover.

John

btw .... i miscounted

i will now have 50 US proofs (plus 5 duplicates) 17 UK proofs and 5 misc. king proofs. i'm gpoing to post a list on the proof thread of what i have and what i still need.

dang... i just went and looked and realized at some point i got a UK #'d duma key proof - don't know where or when i added that one.
new total = 18 UK proofs - closing in on john .... but i don't think you need to start sweating it out yet - you'll be keeping that proof throne for several more years i'm sure..... though bob and hutch have never spoken up about how many king proofs they own.

<= headed to the library to see what other things i didn't know i had.

I'm really disappointed that nobody came through.

The Under the Dome is there for misdirection I figured everyone would focus on it. Tommyknockers is what I think is a rare state of a book. The DJ is silver foil rather than red or gold foil and the light coming from the door is a pale blue rather than the green light found on the red or gold foil Tommyknockers.

Now for Under the Dome. I'm sure you'll see more of these show up. I suspect it is a HB advance copy sent to dealers and reviewers instead of proofs. If this is true the proofs could be as rare or more rare then Cell proofs. On the back cover there is a sticker with the ISBN #. I'm hoping the book will be bound differently ....than I may have something real special.

Hodder and Stoughton issued two states of the first edition of Nightmares and Dreamscapes. The first has a cover price £15.99 with the plate illustrating “The House on Maple Street” opposite page 448. The second, more common, state has a price of £16.99 and the plate is opposite page 433. I have copies of both. The cover art of each is identical.

Hodder & Stoughton never printed a price on the dust jacket for their export editions. Actually, a priced dust jacket is scarcer than an unpriced one for many of their books, including Tommyknockers.

Hmm...I noticed the silver print of The Tommyknockers but passed it off thinking that it has just faded from gold to a less shiny version over time.

I can't help but think that this is a printer's error rather than a separate state of the dj done intentionally. I have not examined one up close (not that I would know what to look for) but I suspect the machine doing the printing may have been low on the green color or set wrong or something. So many times in the book the light coming from the shed is described as greenish yellow that I find it unlikely they would intentionally make it pale blue. It is an interesting dust jacket.

I'm curious if he has connections to MN. We made the cut for the book tour and he seems pretty familiar with the area based on his use of St. Paul and its suburbs in Duma Key.

I'm excited to see him again. It took almost 37 years to see him the first time (I went to the 3 Kings reading in D.C.). Can't believe I get to see him 2x in 2 years. Now I just need to get lucky(-er) and get a signed book in the lottery.

I'm sort of on the lookout for a signed audio of DOTT as well. :covert:

Congratulations, Dr. Dawg.

John, do you have the signed audio ed. of The Drawing of the Three?
I´m still looking for that one, as discussed before,it´s seems to be a rare one.

I am fortunate to have two sets of Drawing of the Three signed audio. #95/800 and I think the other is 235/800 (hard to tell as this one is still in shrink wrap other then a slit to be sure it is signed).

Also have #370/800 of The Gunslinger signed audio

I have often wondered the value of these now..
I got these some time ago.

CONGRATULATIONS, Dawg, to you and your wife! Hope mother and baby are doing fine. Welcome to parenthood!

John, nice price!
I am also looking (also not very hard) for the DT II S/L audiotapes.
