Arrived today:

Neil Gaiman is signed. River Run bookstore sent it an a padded envelope so both bottom corners are slightly bent and there is damage to the upper back cover too.

That sucks. When the damaged book arrived, did you call River Run and discuss the situation?

(Congrats on the others.)

Nice! Can you post pictures of the covers of the matching SK books? I like it when books match. There is a few Sk books that pop up on eBay every now and then and they have rather nice dreary/beautiful artwork on the covers, kind of like a painting ... I don't know too much about them but I like them. Them, and the collector's editions and the comic book-type artwork ones, and the Holdorf ones. Love it.

I've always liked that set but it never has really caught on with collectors. They were published in 1990 to coincide with Doubleday's publication of the uncut version of THE STAND. I think there is only one printing of that particular edition so they are not real common, esp. in F/F condition.

What appear to be the original printer's proofs for It:

And the same for Misery:

I originally thought these were just F&Gs, but after inspection, I realize these are pre-proof items.

It is not S.K., but I just got back from an LA book signing with George R. R. Martin. A friend of a friend works on the HBO series and got me out of the very long line to get the book personalized and hang out with him for about a 1/2 hour in advance of the mass signing - very cool. Incidentally, the signing was capped at 750 folks with no personalization and the staff told me that they expected it to take 2 1/2 hours or so. For the S.K. signing in D.C. capped at 400, with personalization I'd guess it would take about the same length of time depending on how organized it is.

Not a book, but here's my tale...

In 1967, one of my best mates at that time was a guy called Sandy Lowe. His dad owned a glazing business and as you can imagine, they were well heeled...in my terms, and most others in our town, at that time, what you would call mega-rich. He (Sandy's dad that is) had a 2.4 litre Jaguar Mk II - maroon red with matching leather interior, walnut dash, wire wheels etc. In those days young men were not into cars the way they are now, since the vast majority couldn't afford to buy a gallon of petrol never mind own a car. The only ones on our street who had one was a family, well, the eldest son, whom it was alleged was (literally) a gangster. Anyway, Sandy's dad would occasionally go on business trips and when he was away Sandy would drive the car. We were out in it one night and he asked me if I would like to drive it...me??...no licence!! never drove before!!...but, at that age you're up for anything...how hard could it be after all?
I did drive it for a short distance, on a dark country road in the 'a***h**e of nowhere'. When I got into the driving seat I asked my mate how to switch the car on and he replied, ''the vehicle is already switched on Alex'', or words to that effect, as is the way in the Scottish vernacular...I never forgot that. When I got more than a bit nervous about driving we decided I should reverse into an opening at the side of the road so we could go back the way we came. Unfortunately I reversed into what turned out to be a gate leading to a field. No damage to the car luckily but a sobering experience for me. I fell in love with it - not the way you would love a woman, but the way you might love a piece of art, or your football team, or the best juicy steak with all the trimmings, or maybe even a signed Gunslinger 1/1. That same night, I promised myself that someday I'd own a Jag.

44 years on and three kids later...no Jag, until now that is.

I haven't had any contact with Sandy since about 1972 but I did see him on Countdown (for those not in the UK, it's a TV quiz show) about 10 years ago...he got beat!!...oh well.

I'd had my (now previous) car for 4 years and thought that it was about time for a change. Lo and behold, when looking for my new 'dream machine', I came across this Jag near where I live and, as I've done a number of times in the past with others, went to look at it. As I said, I sort of fell in love with it, and I'm not getting any younger, am I? It's not new, or even nearly new, but I did buy it, and it is mine, a Jag after all these years.

JAGUAR S-TYPE 2.7L V6 TWIN TURBO DIESEL AUTOMATIC SPORT

It will probably cost me an arm and a leg to run but what the heck, you only live once and my time here is coming closer to it's end...though hopefully not in the near future.

I don't think there is a good way to search for them. You're best just to look for the covers and make sure the book they are selling matches the cover.

That's awesome! I am not able to make it to any of his tour stops, so I had to order a copy from The Signed Page. I know his website has been pretty adamant about no personalizations, so you are lucky to have a friend in high places! And a great personalization it is!

First off, I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe the books will be personalized-perhaps I missed something.
If King spends 30 seconds with each person that would be over 3 hours, I would be surprised if each person got more than 15 seconds.

The Harvard signing a couple years back had - I would estimate - 500-600 people (maybe more, and I'd be shocked if it was less).

It took about three hours or so - probably started at 8 and I got my book signed at 11, and there were still people behind me, though I was near the end.

He did not personalize, and I probably had 20 seconds of face time, if that, which about fits RF's math above.

shannon, seems like you and I are collecting King in the same way. These days I'm buying lots of magazines (occasionally anthologies and papers) with King fiction and non-fiction, from either Amazon or Betts´ or Overlook. Gosh, there's so much out there. When I'm done doing that I'll move on to getting those first editions I don't have, which is a handful, especially of the earlier books. I don't collect limited editions as a rule, or foreign books, proofs, articles on King and interviews with King...only stuff written by him. I also collect screenplays. It's a joy when you update your buys and please don't ever stop:)

I have a vision of the future. My Stephen King room is a little bit like the pictures I've seen of carlosdetweiller's basement ... but bigger! Wider, more shelving, ceiling to floor, wall to wall in some cases ... When you walk in, on your immediate left there is a shelf, and every book on it is Carrie. Every edition, every country, every cover. Just one each, I'm not greedy, lol. The next shelf would be Salem's Lot ... on and on and on. US First Editions are one thing ... How about a collection of Panamanian First Editions!? :)

I want everything, and when I see a good deal, especially in a bundle, I buy it. With these magazines there are a lot of first editions, artist editions, gift editions, odds and ends, movie press kits, etc coming. I was bored at work one day and decided to try Craigslist to see if I can find any deals that seemed legit. I met this collector and as a trial run, we did the magazine transaction first. Everything has gone smoothly and we will be doing another package sometime soon. :)

I moved from a thinner four-shelf bookcase to a wider six-shelf bookcase and somehow the same amount of books fill up both ... How does this happen? lol

I searched for ... what did I search for ... Oh yeah, Night Shift ... I searched for Night Shift on eBay yesterday and found maybe 25-30 different covers. Love it love it love it. I think that's what I'm going to do one day ... just ... "Hmmm, today seems like a good day for Gerald's Game ..." and then buy up every cover I see, lol.

shannon, I don't have a thread just yet. My collection are currently stored in a huge closet for protection since I've had previous problems with silverfish that found books and papers a mighty meal. Luckily they only gnawed in photocopies I later got again and some old paperbacks that were easy to replace. I don't know why but they stayed clear of the hardbacks. That problem is long solved but I haven't found a new bookcase that would fit with all my stuff. I will definitely make some pics in the not-too-distant future. I forgot to add I have a few memoribilia such as the Derry tree ornament, the Desperation/Regulators nightlight (still in its package and unused), and Nightmares & Dreamscapes postcards featuring illustrations from some of the stories in that collection.

Yes, it's a tiny thing (smaller than I expected at least) but it's a nice production with lots of cool illustrations. Not sure if I would have paid the retail price of £75 but this was an okay price, especially since shipping from the UK to The Netherlands is cheap.

The little AB Bookman's Weekly copy is a nice Quirky King item (as Jerome would say). That's the one with the early article on collecting King, isn't it? Looks better than mine! And I like the Phantasmagoria issues, that's a set I still need to complete (I'm about halfway I think).

I thought it was American Bookseller with A Pilgrim's Progress (an early non-fiction piece by King).

No, it is an article written by Peter Schneider in the early 1980's. I actually went to a library (in 1982, I think), found the article on microfilm (or maybe microfiche) and copied it to read it. It was the very first article of its kind on collecting Stephen King and I read it and reread it several times. It really got me started.

I have the magazine with "A Pilgrim's Progress" in it and can post a picture later if you would like to see it.

John, thanks for the website. I have a foreign website saved that is the same thing, but it's kinda hard to read. :) I love the different covers. That's why I think I will place the books in order by book, instead of type of subcollection (first edition, proof, signed limited) ... Like, right now, I have The Dark Half first edition, The Dark Half proof, and a Dark Half paperback all next to each other. It doesn't look the best, but when I have twenty different ones, it will. :)

This is probably a stupid question, but is the lettered vol. 2 smaller than vol. 1? I'm asking not only because it looks like that in the picture but because I know the proofs for the books are also slightly different in size. Just wondering, nothing to lose my sleep over.

The volume 2 gift editions is 21 pages shorter than the vol 1 gift edition. They are both the same trim size however. I couldn't tell you about the lettered though as I don't have a volume 1 that's easy to get to to check. In that particular picture though, I think it's how the books are leaning that makes them look different sizes.

Sorry for removing the comment, I didn't think it was appropriate to bring it up here. But now that it's out anyway...

That Bachman Books is most likely a Book Club Edition. The first edition/first printing has the raised gold leaf on the jacket and a full numberline on the copyright page. Also, I've noticed that some of the book club editions omit the full page reproductions of the paperback covers before each book.

Here are a few goodies from the last week and today:

I can't afford a lettered and find the traycased underwhelming for the price so the slipcase is the edition I went for. It's still a very nice looking book, and looks right at home next to the rest of CD slipcased editions.
http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/7540/august039.jpg

Most of these are from bookstores and cost a couple of bucks. I thought Gene Wolfe was a good deal at $3 and it got even better when I got home and found out it's signed (inscribed). The Mailman was a good deal too, they go for more than 10x than I paid for it. I love looking through stacks and stacks of books and sometimes it pays off.
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8858/august038.jpg

William Ollie and his newest book. I love those mini hardcovers from Delirium. I'd like to see King short stories and novellas published that way. Lebbon is a trade but I'll get it signed next month. Rest are used from bookstores:

My new pride and joy is a paperback proof (from CreateSpace, so no biggie) of a kids book I wrote:

I actually sold a handful (literally) of copies on Kindle and Smashwords and have received positive reviews from people I've never even met. So I cleaned it up and fixed some typos, and I have this now.

I'd buy an inscribed, dated, signed proof!

Love the Sneak Peek my friend, the case looks to be in real perfect condition also. Great stuff ...

And man oh man, that ledger is great. I've seen one or two of them available in my time collecting, but I've never seen the inside. That is some great stuff. I think that just might be my new TMSG!

TDCPL is a very nice item. I once came close to selling my copy but I'm glad I didn't. Its page count is quite underwhelming though, it's a fairly large but very thin item.

Oy, mcVey! That is small...

Anywho, I got my "Sins of the Fathers" S/L today (Thanks, Shannon!). I was surprised that King signed in purple.

Also, because people showed even a bit of interest in my little book, I decided to re-design the cover so it looks like I spent more than 5 minutes on it in MS Paint (which is exactly what I did the first time around):

Sorry to monopolize this thread... For our 12th Anniversary, my wife got me a few books:

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/1771/038og.jpg

After the Dark Tower, Lawrence Block's Burglar series is my favorite, so I'm excited to have some (signed) firsts. "Scoreless Thai" is a S/L from another Block series. "Gummitch and Friends" contains a tribute to Fritz Leiber by Stephen King. "Sins of the Fathers" (actually bought this from ShannonsMovies; Thanks again, Shannon!) is signed by both Lawrence Block and Stephen King (as I said above, King signed in purple):

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/6972/035swy.jpg

King's introduction to "Sins of the Fathers" was written in 1992 and was called "No Cats"; it is a tribute to how great it is to read about a private eye who doesn't have a cat. King's tribute to Leiber is also from 1992 and although it doesn't mention cats, it is contained in a volume comprising Leiber's greatest cat stories. Struck me as a funny contrast.

Thanks for the kind words, Richard. I have now converted the book to MP3 and will be listening to it this week while I read through it (this really makes errors and typos jump out). I have to admit that this is the first time I have read the entire book from start to finish; after the first few chapters, I am also intrigued. (I know this sounds facetious, but it's not; I wrote the first 4+ chapters almost ten years ago and I'm curious to see how it gels with some of the newer stuff).

My newest P&J is not King related but nonetheless here it is. Cars have not been a major part of my life since becoming a family man (many eons ago) and the car is just the means to the end - dependable transportation for getting from point A to point B safely. I typically driven them into the gorund, although I do provide the necessary maintenance. It's nice to not have a monthly car payment, which I haven't has since 2003 with both car and truck paid for, BUT sometimes you have to give in. My 2003 Impala with 150K miles is in serious trouble. It currently sits in the driveway and is not much more than a lawn decoration. Needs a serious valve job and I am wondering how much and if it is even worth it. In the meantime I need a replacement so that I can get to work. Thus the new P&J. Flipping from GM to Japan I guess. First time Honda Accord owner and loving it already. It also has more bells and whistles than I am used to but what the heck! The pic is not the best quality taken from my cell phone at dusk night before last!

My newest edition - a 2nd edition Gunslinger. The jacket is in really good shape, but I also got an mint, unused, not folded jacket as well. I think I am going to keep the current jacket on the book and hold on to the extra one. Just can't bring myself to actually putting it on the book.

I've recently discovered there is quite a bit of arbitrage available by buying at the used book store near my work and then selling on ebay, so I've been able to fund some nice purchases at a decent discount. Here's one:

I've also got a (non-shrinkwrapped) Desperation coming as well as some Lawrence Block stuff. Can't wait to go back to work tomorrow.

Thanks for using the word "arbitrage". I don't run into that word very often and I like the way it sounds.

No problem; I aim to please. Obviously, it's not real arbitrage because there's some risk involved, but the store seems to price all its scifi and fantasy hardcovers at $10, so there are some good opportunities for a quick buck or two (examples would be 50s and 60s Tolkien, Heinlein, and Asimov).

I have a store like that here called "Bookman's" They buy used books from ya and will issue cash or "Bookman Bucks" and they generally price all used books at 8-10$. It's hit & miss, but I swear I've seen whole collections there of 1/1's for $8 a pop. You can tell they were in some poor BF's collections before his GF or Wife tossed him out and dumped the books there. Never knowing what she had.

Picked up some real gems that way!!!

BTW :thumbsup::thumbsup: for "Arbitrage".

Nothing too exciting, as all of these are books I used to own at one time, but I am building my King collection back up so I'm excited.

I've had these two NP&Js for over six months, but was waiting until I had them framed to share.

You'll have to excuse the flash and reflections, as it is evidently a terrible time of day to photograph glass!

These are both covers to the same book - "Trolley No 1852" by Edward Lee.

This book is a Lovecraft pastiche and I absolutely loved everything about it, including the artwork.

The first one is the original acrylic painting by Alex McVey for the Bloodletting Press S/L hardcover of the book.

The second one is the original oil painting by Alan M. Clark for the Deadite Press trade paperback of the book.

Hope you guys enjoy as much as I do!
