I've been selling a lot of things lately - condensing my book collection, including my King collection, but I've also gotten some exciting new King books in the last two weeks.

I replaced my limited of "Road to the Dark Tower" with a PC copy of the lettered edition, so as to match my II-VII PC set of the Dark Tower books.

Likewise, I have a PC copy of Insomnia en route that will replace my limited. I decided to keep only the S/Ls of the Stand and 'Salem's Lot in addition to my DT books as they are two of my favourite books but also some of the nicest looking King limiteds. But when push came to shove I decided I'd really like to keep Insomnia too - I enjoyed the story, its a nice looking book and as King says himself in DTVII (or maybe DTVI), its the most important of the related novels.

And finally, just tonight, I purchased a 1st edition of Salem's Lot - a book I've been searching for the "right" copy of for quite a while.

As Pam said in another thread of herself, I'm a happy camper right now!!

Ricky

Thanks Ricky - and I agree when you search high and low and find what you're looking for, its a great feeling.

I had resigned myself to the fact that I wasn't going to be able to afford a copy in fine condition, so I was looking for a VG/VG copy. The one I got is closer to NF/VG+ from the looks of things and I think I got a good deal. It will be nice to replace the red leather SK Library edition that I had been using as a place filler!

Sounds like you got a deal and a half if the condition is better than described--in my experience, it's usually the other way around. I'd love to see a photo of the Salem's Lot one day...I can live vicariously through your success. :)

Congratulations, Eric, on the Salem's Lot. Is it a second or third state edition? (The second state has the Father Cody error, the third state has it corrected to Father Callahan.)

It's been my experience that the third is a bit harder to find than the second.

John, its the second state jacket. Although I totally agree that the third seems to be more rare, and actually a lot cheaper too, its the second state that I was after - as I'm sure most collectors are (hence the lower price on the third state).

Well, King's introduction have priorly been published in an Albacon programme book (scottish event in glasgow) in 1986 even though Justin Brooks and Rocky Wood couldnt get their hand on one.

And later reproduced in a Stephen Jones' book :

1. Albacon III Programme Book (March 28-31, 1986)
2. A Special Preview Tale from The Inhuman Condition, by Clive Barker (1986) (Booklet that was distributed at the 1986 ABA convention)
3. As the introduction in Clive Barker’s Shadows in Eden, by Stephen Jones (1991)

Yeah, I'd been waiting quite some time before I came across one as cheap as this one. I also have the US Rage 1st/1st but it's in poor shape, lots of deep creases in the spine. But I got that one cheap as well, and I must admit, I'm not really picky :P

Of course, Jeremy is correct. According to Justin Brooks' Bibliography (C188 ), those were the other editions.

I've been doing a little more research on this book and verified that the full proof of Barker's Inhuman Condition does NOT contain the King material. This partial proof seems really scarce. There are six different sellers in my AddALL search, but all are of the full proof.

I was pretty surprised to see the contrast study in the newsletter the painting was actually finished today (on a side note when he started the painting he emailed me asking what time of year it was for the funeral and at first I tried to remember then I remembered that it would have been the day SK was hit so I emailed him saying it took place on June 19th, it wasn't until after I sent the email that I realized it WAS June 19th so he started the painting on the actual day the death took place).

You definately should try to meet him he is a neat guy.

The colors are spectacular Alan was going for a stained glass window look based on the line from the book describing the clearing as church like.

"The hazy green-gold summerglow that lives only in forests deepened. It fell through the trees in dusky beams, and the place where Roland finally stopped felt more like a church than a clearing"

Here is my latest Pride + Joy, a signed AE edition of LSOE, one of the 9 special ones that King did for Grant Books prior to the book's release. This one is inscribed to KelLee, who was Karen's predecessor at Grant. I contacted KelLee in December as soon as I heard that King had signed special copies for Grant people. I heard nothing from her until an e-mail appeared back to me in mid-May. And now, finally, the book is here.

So, now I have a little bit of a side collection...the KelLee Larson collection. Many years ago, I purchased 3 books that King signed especially to KelLee from Hutch. Now with the LSOE book, I have 4 inscribed to the same former Grant employee. The other books are:

Gunslinger 3rd edition
Drawing of the Three 2nd edition
Wizard and Glass 1st edition (small note, in W&G, the handwritten notes that Roland and Susan pass between them in the story...Susan's handwriting is KelLee's)

Here they are (sorry, some pics are not good):

Interesting "first state" dust jacket for the UK version of THE STAND: Complete and Uncut published in 1990.

The book was issued with a purchase price of 14.95 pounds in the UK. I've got an earlier state of the dust jacket with a price listed at 16.95 pounds. The white box on the rear panel is blank on this dj without the bar code and ISBN number on the later version. The text on the inner flaps of the dj are slightly darker and bolder on the later version but no textual differences. This dj was once folded where the spine meets the rear panel leading me to believe it was a trial or proof dj.

I've not seen this before. Anyone else with one or with information about it?

Here is a photo with the earlier dj on the left.

Bob, There's some info about the dust jacket in the Biblio Notes section on Barry Levin's website - http://www.raresf.com/bnotes.html

KING, STEPHEN. THE STAND: THE COMPLETE & UNCUT EDITION. The true world first edition, first binding state has only been seen by us in one copy. This copy, according to a letter of provenance from an executive at Doubleday, is "one-of-a-kind." He went on to state, "We had to go back with all those books [400,000 copies of the first trade printing] and have the endpapers more firmly secured . . . Yours is the only book that was kept out of that first run—a true collectors' edition." This quite possibly unique copy of the first edition, first binding state, is of the trade edition which preceded the limited edition both in its binding and in its date of release. (We use the term "edition" rather than "state" because the trade copies and limited copies were printed from different type with different collations.) This book was the first copy sent out by the publisher; it was acquired in advance from the printer by an executive at Doubleday and sent to a Stephen King bio-bibliographer on 2/22/90. This copy's release date (and only this copy) preceded the early release of the British copies.

The British edition preceded the American edition (our unique copy aside). Andy Richards stated that Michael Moorcock (the British science fiction author) bought a copy in Spain weeks before the release of the American edition (yes, even before the accidental early release of some of the American copies to book stores), and that copy was most probably a copy of the British domestic edition. Mr. Richards went on to state that the original dust jacket for the British uncut STAND had a higher price, but Doubleday (the American publisher) made them lower the price and reprint the dust jackets with the new lower price. Larry Coven reported that only two copies of the limited edition of the uncut STAND were issued with the plate (the engraved title plaque for the lid of the limited edition's wooden box) in the first state affixed to the lid. One of them has been seen on the lid of a lettered copy. The first state of the plate was brass with black lettering, the second state was black with engraved brass lettering. The second state plaque is also 1/8 inch larger than the first state.

I have been on these forums for a little while now overwhelmed by all the information available and thought I should finally get involved in posting.

I recently found a First Trade Edition of Wizard and Glass and $30 that I couldn't pass up and I also was able to acquire a complete set of the Red Leather Library books for just under $5 a book. Although not necessarly the "grandest" of King purchases I think they are certainly my best finds to date and they help to add to my collection.

For clarity, this forum is not PG. I would consider it (and I hate the MP rating system), PG-13, with links that have a warning to R-Rated images having to do with Stephen King in particular, and other authors, artists in general, completely acceptable.

Jerome (and anyone else), if you want one, here's the link: CD Big Book of Necon (http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/PROD/booth01)

In summary:
The book contains "The Old Dude's Ticker" by Stephen King and a ton of other stuff.
The unsigned trade edition costs a mere $40.
There is an S/L for $175 signed by dozens of people, but not King.
The two editions that are signed by King sold out long ago.

(The trade edition is shipping but, as tippy well knows, the other editions of this CD book remain in production so who knows when they'll actually ship.)

My copy of Necon got here on Tuesday. It's a nice book. Completey got overshadowed by my zombie family though :D

I ordered the frame today. It will look like this (except bigger). I'm not sure if I like the lavender matte or not. I ordered the frame with the black matte and will just take it to a local frame shop to get the accent matte cut once the frame gets here. I want to see how the colors react to the painting itself. Black works, but the accent color really should be chosen with the picture right there.

I bought both magazines when they first came out (price was $.50!) mainly because they contained reprints of stories from Weird Tales magazine. I was especially interested in the Jules DeGrandin series (by Seabury Quinn). At that time, though, money was especially tight and I had to really scratch to come up with the 50 cents every two months.

John,
I'm only slightly behind you in years. I had a paper route when I was 12-13
and a neighbor would put his magazines (Cavaliers) in the trash and I might
have borrowed a few! If I had just been paying more attention to the stories rather than the photos! Now I pay money for good copies and only care about the stories! ahhh...age and wisdom!

I would have had the same reaction as you all. I would have thought they were "proper" magazine size.

John, cool story.

I am continually humbled, amazed, astounded by the generosity and thoughtfullness of people on this site. My new Pride and Joy was a gift, a very generous one at that, from our very own Juliana. :huglove: to you Juliana. I am thrilled beyond words at your gift. Would love to hear the story behind it. Now feast your eyes on this remarque and inscription by artist Don Maitz in a Gift Edition of Desperation.

David, this is turning into a good week for you!

I received a new item for my collection today.....The UK S/L Insomnia.

I swore I would not get sucked into those "UK Bookplate S/Ls", but now I have three.

Only one I am missing is the Desperation/Regulators set.

Finally snagged the Insomnia portfolio I've been looking for a long time.
http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/4411/portfolioo.jpg

I know of several people who owns the Deluxe Locecraft artbook from Centipede Press, but I don't think anyone had posted photos of them. If anyone is interested to know, it is a truly amazing production. Weighing 25 pounds, traycase containing 3 separate books. The main book, the additional prints book and the signatures book. Each book with holographic image on the cover.

Here is the massive traycase measuring 17 X 13 X 4.
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/3730/traycase.jpg

The 3 books inside traycase, the main book on top:

Limitation page:
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7620/limitation.jpg

Book of additional prints:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/5899/prints.jpg

Book of signatures:
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3334/sigs.jpg

Examples of signatures with 'doodles'. Approximately 50 signatures in all, each page separated with bound-in wax paper.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/1782/signatures.jpg

For sure, there are plenty of beautiful books out there, but this is the most beautifully produced books I currently own. Well done, Jerad!.

According to the King collectible Catalog here:

A limited edition of 400 sets signed by Stephen King and artist Phil Hale. The portfolio measures 13" x 18 " and contains 6 images.
A red covered edition included an original art piece by Hale, these are thought to be the first 10-20 numbered editions.

That's one that I will need to find next, a red cover portfolio. Does yours include the original art piece?.

That is the first flatsigned one I've seen. There are the 9 he inscribed to Grant and former Grant employees of which I own one. Did you purchase it from someone we know? I think Robert had one at Grant...Steve did not inscribe it for some reason. Could this be the one?
