Not a huge new pride and joy, but still one I am happy about.

A first trade of The Eyes of the Dragon

I owned this book back in the 80's but I don't remember the production quality. Anyway, I have to say this is easily the sharpest trade edition produced by Viking. The cloth is very soft on the spine, and the spine is the most attractive spine I've seen, and you get foil stamping on the front cover. It was well worth getting this one!

heck about time. I have a Limited Edition, proof, and first UK but I never had the easiest book to get, the US trade. lol

I just purchased the S/L Desperation with the # that matches my Dark Tower set.

I now own TWELVE Stephen King S/Ls with the same number. I could have had FOURTEEN, but I had to pass on Insomnia and Cycle of the Werewolf since the prices were just too high.

I also recently won an Easton Press 1st state Dead Zone in mint condition for less than $70 shipped.

Yes, but you are lucky in that you "magic number" is lower than 100, which allows you to add books like PS10, TGWLTG (which I know you would never buy), The Colorado Kid, and a few others that have VERY low print runs.

My number is below 500, so I do have a lot of opportunities....just not as many as you. :cowboy:

Anyhow, here is my list of matching books:

DT1
DT3
DT4
DT5
DT6
DT7
Desperation
Black House
Quietly Now
Salem's Lot
Secretary of Dreams V1
Cujo

Now if I could just find my missing DT2 to complete my set! I would also like to find From a Buick 8 and hope that one day the Insomnia I passed on will show up again.

Rahfa
09-29-2007, 02:08 PM
I'm missing DT II as well...and you're right, I wouldn't buy TGWLTG even it was the same #, or Colorado Kid for that matter...

I have DT I, III-VII, Desperation, Black House, Quietly Now, Salem's Lot, Sec. of Dreams, Danse Macarbe, Dark Dreamers, Christine, Borderlands 5, Gauntlet 2, The Plant (2 of 3), Buick 8, Night Visions and Bare Bones (no King sig).

I've never seen one that I then passed up on, for whatever that's worth...that's basically why I bought the Plant, and I defintiely overpaid for Dark Dreamers...it's been a long time since I got a new one though. I think Bare Bones was the last one, and it's not even signed by King.

If I could somehow find Cujo and/or The Stand (and DT II) I would basically have an unmatchable set.

I'm actually reducing my King books to that core group, selling as I go, and I'll use the money for the needle-in-haystack matching number...

I'm with you on that one, although I already have a study. Hi everyone,
I'm a new member here, having just recently found the site through a Google search. I've been a collector for awhile, but had to sell most of my King items a few years ago and now mostly focus on sci-fi/fantasy books.
I had a question that I'm sure some of you would be able to answer better than me regarding a recent Ebay purchase. I just received a manuscript copy of 'Wizard and Glass', with hand corrections through the first 100 or so pages. The manuscript itself is incomplete, and seems to be missing all of Part Three (something I didn't know before the purchase).
I believe the manuscript is real, as it includes different phrasing from the final product, but I'm trying to determine if the corrections are by King.
I've uploaded some pictures here (http://www.flickr.com/gp/14853957@N08/0912cM) for people to see.
Thanks everyone!

I hope someone here is able to help you with your questions, unfortunately I am not that person. I am interested in the opinions though. I was watching that auction closely and even brought it up asking for opinions here or thedarktower.net (I can't remember which). I loved the idea of the manuscript but was a little apprehesive without having any proof of authenticity. I truly hope this is what it seems to be and that has ended up in the hands of a collector that will appreciate it.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I noticed the item on Ebay while searching for a first ed. 'Wizard and Glass'. Prices are pretty good right now and I was thinking about picking one up, but this caught my eye instead. I contacted the seller, but she wasn't very good with taking photos. She did send me what she could, and I could tell just from the dedication that it looked like an earlier draft of the work.
The seller had apparently found it years ago in a garage of King's publisher in a summer house in Heath, MA (this is what she told me). The box had King's return address on it, which is how she knew it was real.
Since it was her first time selling on Ebay, we both decided it would be better if we made the transaction through an escrow service, so I'm able to check out the manuscript and if I want to, I have the option of sending it back.
I've got a few days to decide on what I want to do, and to tell the truth, I'm a little disappointed that the manuscript isn't complete, but if the corrections are real, then I guess it's a no-brainer. :)

At first blush the pics seem to portray a manuscript. Though much more valuable-considerably in fact, in their entirety, an original manuscript is worthy of attention. Some questions that come to mind are:

Is it even real?-Yours looks like it should/could be.
Is this the original, or a copy, or a copy of a copy?-Can't tell from the pics. You-or an expert, need to examine the pages.
Provenance. Proof of the documents existance etc.
Legality. If in fact these are very valuable, how where they obtained? If obtained illegally, King potentially could seek and obtain return of the manuscript. Not trying to scare you off, but these are just questions that immediately came to my mind.

jhanic
10-10-2007, 03:29 AM
I agree with Randall. Have it checked by an expert. Also, having seen some of King's corrrected manuscripts, I'm pretty sure the corrections are his. The writing seems authentic. Just my two cents, though.

Thank you both for the replies.
As to some of your questions RF, here's what I can tell you:
The manuscript is definitely a copy of a later draft. I've uploaded a new picture of the part where they find the "All Hail the Crimson King!" which is a photcopy of the original.
As to the provenance, I'm still trying to piece together the story. This was found in Heath, MA, apparently in the garage of King's publishers summer house. Is there any way to find out the truth of that?
The seller sent me the manuscript in the same box it was found in. The box also had a FedEx sticker on it with a delivery date in November 1996, which would make it around the right time for a later draft (as far as I can remember , this was published by Grant in Nov. 1997).
As to the legality: I don't know how else to find out without trying to contact the publisher. Does anyone know how to do that or what other experts may be able to help me out?
Thanks again to everyone. I've never found a forum like this where there are a group of collectors willing to help each other out. It's making me want to start collecting King more heavily again!

I went to the Best American Short Stories event in Mass. tonight and to King's credit he sat and signed what had to have been 500+ books, probably more...he zoomed through the line, too...I was about 2/3 toward the back, and I think it took maybe 90 minutes...

There was a group of people trying to get him to sign other books, but they weren't having it...I did ask him to personalize my copy, but he wasn't having that, either! Haha...Totally understandable of course. I would have been surprised if he had (but I figured it's a legit request, since at least he knows I wouldn't be selling it...)

Three other writers were there too, and I got them to sign a copy as well.

A couple people in line were complaining, but I think they did a really good job considering the crowd....he signed for everybody. Personalized or not, it's the first King book I got that I actually witnessed him signing...

I ask because I have 300+ books, but I collect first editions, S/Ls and proofs, so it would be mind boggling to me if your 300 are nearly all King-related proofs!!

Rahfa, great story, glad you got to meet King, even if only briefly.

I think "briefly" overstates it...haha...no pix, though. It would have been of nothing more than his head, looking down at the book...he did look up when I asked if he would sign my name and said "pardon?" and I repeated myself and he said 'sorry, I can't.' And I said "no problem" and moved right along...

The impressive thing was the speed the line went, and that his signature was pretty good...

The other cool thing was I ended up going by myself because of a late cancellation by a friend but they had presigned copies of the book available as well, so even though I could only get one book physically signed, both books were actually already signed. So, one book is actually signed twice.

Proofs I don’t have (yet!):

US Proofs
Carrie
Salem’s Lot
Night Shift
The Shining
The Stand
The Dead Zone (Viking)
Dark Tower I – Gunslinger (Plume orange)
Dark Tower II – Drawing of the Three (Grant) (May never have been distributed)
Four Past Midnight grey cover
Green Mile #6
Dark Tower VI – Song of Susannah with black tape spine
The Colorado Kid
Gunslinger Born printers proofs
Blaze manuscript proof B ($25 on cover)

UK Proofs
The Stand
The Dead Zone
Different Seasons
Skeleton Crew full proof
Four Past Midnight
The Uncut Stand full proof
Green Mile proofs 1, 3-6 (if they exist)
Bag of Bones 3rd state (gray wraps)

There are probably some other UK ones that I don’t know of. Were there proofs done of King’s earliest works? I’ve never seen any or seen them offered.

Proof Dust Jackets

Rose Madder with author’s name in red
Rose Madder with author’s name in white, no Viking logo on spine

Any others except:
UK Black House Black
UK Blank House White
UK Revised Stand
UK Lisey’s Story
Cujo
Revised Stand
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Cycle of the Werewolf paperback

Obviously, King’s earliest proofs seem to be out of my price range, but I’m still hoping for a miracle!

wow that's amazing Wiz, congrats!

You too Ari!

Well I just got one of those $50 signed Best Short Stories of 2007 with the photo copy of the ticket. I bought it before I saw the post. It looks good, but who knows?

EDIT: well after comparing it to my other signatures I don't see any reason why it's not legit, as it looks just like his others, where his p is small in the same spot and the k has that crook that he's been doing over the last couple of Limited's. The one thing that could cause alarm is he underlines his sig with a mark. It was apparent in the eBay post that was in the other thread.

Anyone who went to the event and got the book did you have the line under the signature?

Rahfa
10-31-2007, 05:11 PM
Good news...I WATCHED him sign mine, and he put a line under his name...I'm sure it's fine. If you're faking a signature, you'd still have to pay $25 for the book...it's not worth it. It's real, I'm sure.

Cutter
10-31-2007, 05:49 PM
Thanks Rahfa, that eases my mine. The sig looks good enough, and if yours was the same way I feel fine. Thanks!

Wiz, I'm sorry to hear that you ruined your comic collection by having someone write all over the covers. Because I feel sorry for you, I'll give you ten cents on the dollar just to remove them from your sight so that you can begin the healing process from your horrific error. I'll even go all out and split the shipping charge with you.

I think you once said you have over 300 books (let alone other stuff). How many of those 300 are KIng related? How many are King proofs (I understand there are variations for each title).

I ask because I have 300+ books, but I collect first editions, S/Ls and proofs, so it would be mind boggling to me if your 300 are nearly all King-related proofs!!

I currently have a total of 378 different King books, not including anthologies, magazines, books about King, etc.--just King books. Of those, I have 66 US proofs and 32 UK proofs. Again, those do not include anthologies, books about King, etc.

Today I went out at lunch looking to see if the December Edition of Playboy (Mute) was on the stands yet. I went to a Barnes & Noble. Unfortunatley the Nov issue was still taking up the space. I did notice in the bargain books Dark Tower VI, Dark Tower VII and Cell all First Editions on sale for between $6.98 and $7.98. Not bad, but I have them so I passed.

What I did stumble on was something new - The Paris Review - they never used to carry this, nor does any other bookstore around here. I have a copy on order direct from the magazine, but what the heck tonight I get to read Ayana - new Stephen King.

Thus, a good day! :-)

never listen to others when it comes to King books, just make your own opinions. Like some people hate Lisey's story why others love it. You'll only know what category your in if you try the book.

Anyway I found Desperation to be classic King, I loved it. I like RF, found The Regulators a little rough, but I slowly came to appreciate it for what it was.
