I posted this in the Remarques thread, but because of a heads up from a member of this site, I managed to get 2 of only 6 remarques done by Dave McKean in Grant trade editions of Wizard & Glass. McKean is IMPOSSIBLE to get close to (I know because I tried six ways to Sunday) and he just does not hardly ever sign W&G books let alone do remarques....but here are my two:

I think so. $150 + shipping for both. There is some very minor damage to the upper DJ but I'm very happy with it. 4 more firsts and it's a full set. I feel like the collection has grown since I've decided to focus on very specific goals (sold S/Ls to focus on US firsts and gift editions) instead of just buying whatever just because the price was good.

biomieg
10-14-2011, 05:45 AM
Not a bad price at all!

And that's exactly what I am doing, albeit with slightly different goals. Completing the sets of US and UK 1st editions, getting as much pre-CARRIE publications as reasonably possible, acquiring a very specific set of proofs. As soon as that is done, I'll define some new collecting goals. It just feels better to work methodically and to introduce some coherence in the collection. Other people may feel different, of course.

Via auction I was able to acquire two paintings by my favorite artist, Robert Addison, whose art I used in my Second Coming prototype so I can lay a loose SK claim!

The first is Back Window , oil on canvas, 18" x 22" completed in 1948 while Mr. Addison was a student at the Art Institute of Chicago. It is a view from the apartment he shared with Leroy Nieman.
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/Back_Window_1948c.jpg

The second is Suppertime, gouache on board, 22" x 14" completed in 1982.

I LOVE those paintings.

Here's today's haul:

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/2451/books001.jpg

FYI for the completists out there. 'Masters...' features The Crate. Poe's Children has The Ballad of Flexible Bullet. I didn't even know the former book even existed until I saw it tonight at a local Chapters.

Non-King books:
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2848/books003.jpg

Both books by Stross came from Chapters. Koontz isn't my favourite but these first printings were good buys at $3 a pop. DJs in great condition. I've never read Abercrombie but SubPress is doing their overpriced S/Ls of these books so he's gotta be at least alright.

And once again, all together:

Going to bookstores is so much fun.

One more painting from the HH comicfestival.
Levin Kurio is the founder and owner and the writer and illustrator from several Weissblech - Horror Comics.
When i meet him, he was realy busy, he just finished ´something´ and just started for an other collector a marvelous painting of a half nude warrior princess with an big SWORD.

He remembered me from our last meeting, we talked a little bit and i asked him if he maybe have ´something´ for me. :)
And... YES..... he asked me if i´am interested in his, one minute before not finished ´rehearsal´ Zombie paniting...

My answer.... YES.....

He taught English at Hampden Academy from '71 to '73. I saw these when they first came onto eBay and I had to wait and wait and wait and wait. Ugh! But today is a great day. For a few reasons!

1) I got paid today.
2) I won the two King yearbooks.
3) I sent my last payment (plus shipping) to Mr. Alan M. Clark, which means that after a few months of making payments, my original artwork will be here soon!
4) My girlfriend and I are meeting with a potential boarder that is going to rent our spare bedroom. That's an extra $500 a month I don't have to work for, mofos! lol
5) What else? I posted a lot of short works yesterday, which makes me feel like I accomplished something, lol
6) It's the weekend.
7) I have a really great transaction coming up with a lot of interesting items for under market value. That's always good. :)

I think that's it.

OH YEAH!!! I ALMOST FORGOT!!!!

8) The Walking Dead's second season starts tomorrow!

Yeeeah buddy. It may seem a little off topic, but all of these are my new pride and joys. lol

I really don't mean to rain on your parade, Shannon. However, is $113 a good price for a freaking yearbook with him in it? No Sig or anything? Maybe it's just me, but that seems a little over the top. Then again I am a frugal German-type, so if you're happy than darn garn it I am happy for you!!!!! On second thought, I guess they're cool!!!!

Congrats!!!!!!

Edit: BTW the new Art is AWESOME!!!!

I don't know if it was a good price. I was willing to go $150 each in the financial state I am in now. If I were in full-blown Crazy Collector Shannon mode, I would have gone higher.

I wanted them, I bought them. I'm happy. :)

I got my copy of the other state of the UK 11.22.63 proof today. This one doesn't have the "Embargoed" statement on the pages. The front and back covers are identical, but the numbering scheme is very different.

Oh, i don't really know what they're called. One item appears to be a preview or update to the stephen king companion and another is just called collecting the works of stephen king (both are photocopies) and then there is a booklet with a bunch of kenny ray linkhauser art and other stuff. I'm not really sure what it's called. I was also mistaken. I am missing I believe two of the phantasmagorias.

Thanks. Me too. They're actually really nice books. The title page and the page facing it are cool. The title page is in color and on the page facing it there is a color scan of the first edition cover. They're not regular paperbacks, they have like ... folded in dustjacket-type paperback covers, it's hard to explain. lol. I really like them. :)

A Scribner/Grant proof of Song of Susannah I bought recently. It's in the condition I expected, and wasn't damaged (much) in shipping. The seller just put it inside a plastic ziploc bag, and threw the bag in a flat-rate envelope. It's annoying, because the flat-rate envelope cost $6. He could have wrapped it in a ton of newspaper and placed it a nice secure box and the media mailed it for less than $4. Oh well...

I'm a big James Bond fan, and ordered one of these when they went on sale last April. Each copy was to be individually handmade and mine finally arrived this week - The Carte Blanche Bentley Special Edition. The special edition was designed by the lead designer at Bentley. (My crappy photos don't do it justice!)
It comes in an aluminium case shaped in the outline of the new Bentley Continental GT. The book is bound in white Nappa leather with red stitching around the edges. This is the same grade of leather that is used in a Bentley’s interior. The text is printed in two colours, black and red. The endpapers are a matching red leather. There's a die-cut bullet hole going through all the pages, and in the bullet hole there's a polished 9mm bullet with the number of the copy of the book inscribed on the end. Unfortunately I didn't get 007 - my number is 067!

I have to say that while the other acquisitions are impressive, I especially like that Chadbourne Remarque!!! One of his better efforts, really gives the feeling of "depth" to the book. Glenn is freaking amazing when he wants to be. A somewhat under-appreciated talent, just because he's prolific, IMHO He does in hours what other artist's do in day's. Not to take anything away from either party, just an amazing guy is all.

Congratulations, guys! Alan, the Dead Zone looks great. How's the spine lettering? Not too much sunfading? That's a hard one to find in collectible condition (no fading/not priceclipped). I have a pretty nice copy (it looks 'new' in every way) but even my copy has a hint of fading. The orange lettering seems to be extremely sensitive to sunlight.

Nothign expnsive; simply teh current issue og Granta Issue 117, The (quarterly) Magazine of New Writing.

King's contribution being The Dune, a new short story, easily digesgted in one sitting. It strolls along slowly but captivatingly so, telling a story of obsession and magic and prediction and leaves you with a punch in the gut ending! Yet another teriffic short story from Stephen King. Already the table of COntents for his next Short Story Collection (probably still a few years out) grows to include this tale as well as The Little Green God of Agony and Morality.

Now to see what else is offered up in this neat little package called Granta.

Did you see all the illustrations, Bob? I haven't read any of the other stories yet but I leafed through the book and there is some really nice artwork in there.

And what an amazing new pride & joy, Twisted. I knew it was coming, great to see The Real Thing. Awesome letter, too.

The pictures accompany a short article titled A Garden of Illuminating Existense, by Kaneeta Meechubot. I believe they are photographs that have been manipulated in some manner. They are pretty intriguing to say the least.

It looks to be spot on Michael, with no fading. I'm beginning to think this copy was stowed away somewhere out of sunlight, air and the reach of peoples fingers lol!

More from the Hamburg Comic Festival.
It was a joy to meet Sarah Burrini. She created an amazing semiautobiographical online german and english language comic.
Life Ain't No Pony Farm - Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof.
Now, she published her first comic, of cause there is an german and a english version.
She remarqued me both comics and then she ´presented´ her work...

Sarah Burrini just finished her ´Sarah´ sketch.

In the German Comic she sketched me ´Sarah´.

In the english Comic she sketched me ´Ngumbe the elephant´.

Seems a lot of his early signatures were signed "Steve" as opposed to "Stephen" but what I think is pretty rare and unique is the "With Love" - Dont see that very often.

I have a new pride and joy but its not an acquisition: At the VA reception when talking with Steve I relayed a message from Jim Bishop to Steve (Jim and Steve had not been in touch for a few years I think). Steve said he needed to write to Jim and get back in touch. I received an e mail yesterday from Jim Bishop telling me that he got a letter from Stephen King and the letter mentions meeting me and some of the things we chatted about. Its not only WAY cool that Steve remembered me, its also WAY cool that in a way I helped them get back in touch with each other. It’s a P&J I wanted to share…

Two new Pride and Joys:

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9323/010xrk.jpg

Just received my Knowing Darkness, and I truly didn't comprehend how large it was. In the picture, you can see a ding on the slipcase (much less noticeable without flash photography), but I'll gladly ignore it because I only paid $75.

Also, the book on top isn't for collecting; all the talk about "The Shining" slipcases and artwork got me curious, so I'm going to read some of SK's older stuff (I've read The Dark Tower and Eyes of the Dragon, but none of the other early stuff). If you're at the JFK Library on Monday, I think you'll see me reading this book.

That story about helping Steve & Jim get back in touch is awesome. It's the sort of thing you'll always have, remembering you helped the man in some way. Very cool.

Also that knowing Darkness is freaking sweet. Mine is on the way and I'll be a happy chappy when it gets here....

Mr. RF, you know what's next for you, right? A traycased Knowing Darkness! You think you've seen massive? Think again. :) And on another note ... you've seriously never read Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, or Night Shift? Man oh man ... lol. The Shining is one of my favorites, I found 'Salem's Lot to be pretty boring, actually, lol, Carrie was OK, and Night Shift has some great stories (and my favorite story of all time, "The Last Rung On The Ladder"). Enjoy!

AKC and Merl, I once had some kind of food item (can't remember what it was though) shipped to me from home ... When it got delivered to my door, it smelled funny, and when I opened the box, a family of roaches spilled out onto my hands. No joke. I do NOT have food shipped to me anymore, lol. But, I hope it works out for you Merl, NYC bagels are orgasmic. :)
