lol, I would be a little sad that I've been here for about a year and you guys haven't checked out my collection thread, but ... there are so many collections that I haven't checked out yet either, so I can't complain. :)

I have actually looked thru your collection thread a few times Shannon but somehow overlooked your Skeleton Crew items. Dunno how that happened!

The Unveiling
The Rules

1) EMAIL: My email address is sgaisserindiego@yahoo.com

2) EXPECTATIONS: When the Unveiling starts, January 15, 2012, at 12:00pm Pacific Standard Time, this is what you will see: I will be posting one main post in the Collectible Classifieds thread, with a listing of all of the items and their prices in their respective sections. There will be nine sections:

Signed Limited Editions
Stephen King US Titles
Proofs & Advance Reader Copies
Stephen King UK Titles
Stephen King Foreign (Non-English) Titles
Titles With Stephen King’s Fiction Contributions
Titles With Stephen King’s Nonfiction Contributions & Nonfiction About Stephen King
Magazines
Miscellaneous Items

For information and photographs of an individual item, please click on the item and a new window will open up. A grouping of items will be on that separate page, as it would not be time-efficient for me to create a page per item. It should not be difficult to scroll down and find the item in question. When emailing me to purchase an item, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE ITEM NUMBER! No item number, no sale.

3) CONDITION: There is little to no description of the conditions of the items. I did one better, I took a LOT of pictures. If there is any damage or wear at all, I took a picture of it. So, STUDY THE PICTURES. In most cases, the pictures exaggerate the damage. If you have any questions about the condition of an item, please ask me.

4) PRICING: All prices are negotiable. With that said, I must say three more things. One, I would like to point out that while I did the research to determine current market value, the final posted and potential discounted prices are per the seller’s prerogative. Two, if you see something you want, please inquire about it. Do not think it a bother to ask for a discount. But please have a number in mind. Three, if I have something posted for $100, and Buyer A emails me first wanting to know if I will accept $75 for it, and Buyer B emails me second saying he’ll buy it at the posted price, I will sell the item to Buyer B.

5) PAYPAL: We will be using PayPal only. Please wait for confirmation of your purchase before sending me money, thank you. If you purchase an item, I expect your payment to be sent on or before February 1st, 2012.

6) PAYMENTS: I accept payments! I will allow up to four monthly payments, at a minimum of 25% of the total cost of the item (including shipping) per month, the first payment to be made on or before February 1st, 2012. After your payments are complete and the item(s) is paid for, I will send you your item.

7) SHIPPING: Shipping will be at actual cost and I will ship ASAP in a box with lots of bubblewrap and/or peanuts, tight, as to not slide around and get damaged during transportation.

8) RESPONSE TIME: I will be online for a long while after the Unveiling begins, please contact me with any purchases, questions, comments. I will respond to every email immediately and update the listings accordingly.

9) EMAIL, AGAIN: My email address is sgaisserindiego@yahoo.com

Thank you,
Shannon

The Unveiling
Sharon Milligan, Stephen King Collector Extraordinaire

In Stephen King’s The Stand, after the Superflu hit and most of the world’s population died, the surviving members of society were divided in half. The forces of good headed towards Mother Abigail in Boulder, Colorado. The forces of evil headed towards Randall Flagg in Las Vegas, Nevada. They say that everyone has a little bit of both good and evil in them, and when I tell you that Sharon Milligan was born in Boulder, Colorado, and now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, maybe you’ll catch my drift.

Sharon has always had a love for literature. At an early age, she read anything she could get her hands on. The collecting bug didn’t bite her until around 1980, but when it bit, it bit hard. She collected Stephen King and Dean Koontz items extensively, a true completist by anyone’s definition. Other authors soon followed, but the heart and soul of her book collection was always Stephen King.

When asked about which Stephen King item was her favorite and most unique, Sharon’s named off a not-so-small list of great items she has purchased and sold in her time as a Stephen King collector: All three volumes of The Plant, the It and Misery blueline proofs from Viking, the Skeleton Crew Treasure Chest, a personal signed letter from Stephen King himself, and early pre-Carrie magazine publications. Also listed were two items she currently owns, one of which is for sale today (a Lettered Gunslinger), and the other is an item so unique and rare that she does not even want me to mention it in such a public forum. This item is the only item from her current collection not being sold today, unfortunately, as it is her wish to put it in her will for her daughter. When asked why, her reply was a simple “Family is important.”

Sharon’s collecting bug finally eased up a bit in 1986, when she became a very successful and busy show dog handler. She collected here and there when she could find the time, but ultimately, her King collecting career ended in 1990. In 1995 she purchased The Book Magician, a Las Vegas bookstore specializing in rare and antique books, where she loved going to work everyday being surrounded by the things she loved. Sharon retired in late 2011 and currently enjoys her well-deserved time off.

Some items don't have pics, that is what was taking me so long, imageshack was messing up. If you are interested in an item with no pics, email me and I will email them to you directly. Thank you for being patient

I was interested in a couple of the S/L'd but the prices are way more than I was expecting. Though I did put in for a couple of lower-tier items--waiting on confirmation e-mail...

ETA: Confimation e-mail received! Two books confirmed!

Sucks that some folks weren't able to see the list for the first 5 minutes or so and had no idea there was a sub-forum listing. I curse whoever got the Eyes of the Dragon proof with artwork.

John, I also get the "page not found" for that section.

I just want to give Shannon a thumbs up - granted, things could have gone a bit smoother but I think he did a very nice job with the limited means available on the forum. Lots of nice stuff!

I don't really know what's going on with number 8. There seems to be an extra quotation mark in the link somewhere, but I can't find it ... Thank you Crow-Man for the posting, I appreciate it.

For those who felt "screwed", I apologize for someone letting the cat out of the bag a little early. I had everything typed up, but I had to post the picture postings before I could post the main posting, so I would have the web addresses for the links. I tried to do it fast, but it still took a few extra minutes. Sorry.

There are still a lot of great items, please, if you see something you want, ask me about it! :)

No one "let the cat out of the bag". Mr. RT posted 1 minute after and anyone who was checking the site would see the new postings in the Short Works section. You started posting there at 8 minutes before the hour.

I also got the NY Times Book Review 2/10/85 with King's review of Elmore Leonard's GLITZ. Another one I could never find. Also got the Ladies Home Journal 10/81 with the nice cover (copy #2). Every copy of that mag I have ever seen has been pretty much trashed.

I don't really know what's going on with number 8. There seems to be an extra quotation mark in the link somewhere, but I can't find it ... Thank you Crow-Man for the posting, I appreciate it.

Shannon, your bad link looks like this:

xn--http-996a//www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Short+Works:8"

While the correct link is:

http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Short+Works:8

Edit: Looks like you fixed it.

You too are too funny.... Must be tough when you have so much that it's the little things (that many consider less significant) that is what you seek.... Or a better copy than what you already have. And sales like this make collecting another adventure.

OK, that looks like that's about it. Did anyone email me with a purchase request, offer, question, comment, anything like that, and I didn't get back to the? Did anyone get lost in the cracks? Did everyone at least get SOMETHING that they wanted? I hope so. I will leave the link in my signature for a while, and I have been allowed use of my Short Works Wiki section for this sale for a week. After that, I'll figure out something else to do with it.

So, thank you EVERYONE, I really appreciate the business. I will get with each and every one of you regarding shipping and payment. Thank you again!

Good night, I'm going to bed!

Had to talley everything up before heading off to slumberland (I've been up for a day or two! lol)

The Unveiling is already a success!

Over four thousand dollars in Stephen King items have been sold so far!

And that's only from the first three hours!

A HUGE thank you to everyone involved, I (and Sharon, lol, I'm sure) truly appreciate it! Now ... There are still quite a number of items that I would really like to sell. I've responded to emails and PMs about the prices on certain items, I KNOW the market value, but ultimately, it comes down to me just being a middle man. But keep throwing numbers at me. Something's gotta stick eventually, right?

The Lettered Gunslinger is in really good condition!

The inscribed Carrie is in near mint condition! Check that thing out!

The Misery proof is probably the most near mint item in the entire Unveiling! It's amazing!

The Danse Macabre, Eyes Of The Dragon, and Christine S/Ls are in great condition, except for the damn slipcases!

The Skeleton Crew S/L, what a beautiful book. It has some VERY minor damage. You wouldn't even see the dustjacket wear unless you were looking for it!

Just one more thing that makes this the place to be.
FWIW, Shannon did a great job setting this up. Aside from him getting advance permission to use the wiki section (which I don't ever see doing again), I had no idea what to expect and was hitting the refresh button like everyone else. To my knowledge no one here new the items and pricing prior to the "unveiling".

I wonder what's going to happen to the relative prices of LSOE and TWWTK next month. Right now, the combined price is approx. $1,150 ($800 for LSOE, $350 for TWTTK). I think that in March, the relative prices will flip and will add up to something less than $1,150. We'll see.

Hi boys and girls.
Last attempt to see if anyone is keen for my UK 'Salem's Lot 1st edition before I bite the bullet and try Ebay.

Plenty more pictures available on request.
Main points: NOT priceclipped. No spine lean. Very small fine tear on front dust jacket and slight rubbing on top corners of jacket. Book in great condition with expected colourisation of pages for a book this age.

Considering reasonable offers.

Cheers

OK, thanks for the quick read, the notebook in asociation with the book makes sense now, but even from all the research I've just done on Google, I can't come up with anything other than the front cover. Does it say Lisey's Story on the back, maybe? That's what I'm asking.

But seriously I know what you mean, I see stuff for sale all the time and if had more money to spend on books and such I would be out of control and I think David at Betts would have a lot more of my money than he already does ! 4 kids and wife keep me in check though, they always need money !

Received my Christine proof from the Shannon-brokered big sale two weeks ago in the mail today. Was astounded to find it stuffed in my mailbox wrapped only in a protective sleeve, a single layer of small bubblewrap around the width of the book (nothing lengthwise), and brown wrapping paper. No cardboard, no foam, no extra bubblewrap, nothing really protective at all. The package's corners were bumped and torn, and the external wrapping was wet (we had a foot of snow here today). Coming from a "life-long King collector" and dealer, I was absolutely astounded that she would ship a book like this. I expect it from someone on eBay, but not I didn't expect it from this sale.

I'd like to inspect for damage (it wasn't Fine to begin with), but the photos from the sale are no longer posted (not where they were anyway). Shannon, are the photos still up anywhere?

Something a little different.
I am putting up for sale a 1st/1st set of Bloomsbury Deluxe Harry Potter Series, 7 volumes in total. These books are cloth bound hardbacks with JK Rowlings facs. sig. embossed in gold on the front board. There is currently a set up on eBay for £2200/$3475, I am asking for offers around $3000 for my set. The books are in fine unread condition and the 3rd book in the series, The Prisoner of Azkaban, was a very limited print run, so a quite rare set. Please pm me for pics and info, cheers.

I will split shipping fees and donate $100 to Haven if sold for $3000.

That is something I'll have to think about before giving a definitive answer. Also, I have to consider sales that state a portion will be donated to our fundraiser, but yet I have no way to (in advance) assure our members the funds will be sent. In all previous instances, members who pledged an amount fulfilled their promises. We are a small community here, and work on a large degree of trust. To my knowledge only one member who offered an item (with no commitment to the fundraiser) has used that trust and absconded with the money.
Thoughts from the members?

Tony

Yeah that's basically something that I've kinda taken for granted - I've never hesitated in conducting a purchase on this forum, I implicitly trusted the sellers and never worried about being robbed before. Obviously no one would want that to change.

As always a wise approach, Jerome. FWIW I would think that a seperate thread may be warranted for Non-King Classified's. As to the donation angle, you're partially correct, us collector's are a tight knit group, but if you haven't noticed our ranks have grown quite a bit in recent month's. You generally want to believe in the basic "goodness" of folks, but as our membership grows that amy be ever more difficult to do. In the past, the site has always enjoyed a sterling reputation for intra-member transaction. Generally, cause we all more or less "know" one another. Yet we all started out (well maybe not you, Jerome!!! LOL) with our first post at one time or another. Maybe, a donation deposit to the widget of say 50% of the proposed donation for, IDK members with less than 1,000 posts? 500? That way you could confirm the payment and maybe get additional info? A haven commitment WILL generally help a classified sale out for most of the "Hard Core collector's here. I know it does in my case!! LOL

Just spit-balling here. Again FWIW

Greg

It seems I have un-wittingly opened a can of wrigglies in respect of the donation. I only put that in the listing as an afterthought, a gesture, I can remove that part if I have strained or broken some principle of the forum I am unaware of. I am not looking for any anlgle, simply want to sell some books and make a gesture.

If I made a donation to Haven would it not show on the banner?

No trouble at all. We are just discussing in an open forum the vagaries of members posting something for sale.

Shannon-I'll work on editing the first post. Hopefully you will work on shipping the items members paid for-promptly, and in excellent condition.

Very disconcerting.

I just wanted to say that Shannon provided me w/photos immediately after my post (I just wasn't able to respond asap) and made it clear that he would providing a severe scolding at the earliest opportunity. My proof made it just fine, no damage from shipping (I wasn't sure about a bent corner, but it was there in the photos), but I attribute that to at least partially to luck. When I opened the mailbox and saw raw red bubble wrap hanging out I knew I was in trouble. Also, I should state for clarity, that she did wrap the brown paper twice, so it wasn't a single layer ... but that still doesn't really make me feel much better. For $295 (plus $4 shipping) I expect a little cardboard, a little more bubblewrap, and UPS to be quite honest. It didn't occur to me to ask about shipping or packing ahead of time, I really did just assume based on the seller and the broker (I'm not blaming you at all Shannon, just stating ...) that everything would be packaged top-notch and sent UPS. So, my bad, won't happen again. I got lucky and am thankful for that. I mean, it's not like it's a DTI 1st, but still ...

So folks, I'd just suggest contacting the seller either directly or through Shannon to formally request proper packaging and shipping. It certainly can't hurt.

Regarding the Unveiling, both the sale and the shipment of items:

It was recommended to me to speak publically about the shipping of the Unveiling items. I would much rather do so on an individual basis with each buyer that has any problem whatsoever, but I feel that maybe the wrong message has gotten across somehow.

I put together the Unveiling from start to finish. I cataloged the items, took an almost infinite (double infinite, lol) amount of pictures, made the ads, researched the market value, so on and so on. Sharon was the one that ultimately set the final price, some of which I felt were too high, some of which I felt were too low. I was the one that communicated with each and every potential buyer, reserving items, wheeling and dealing with prices, answering questions, taking MORE pictures, etc. After this was done, I passed all the information onto Sharon. I segregated each order so there would be no errors. I had wanted to ship them myself, but Sharon wanted to ship them. Ultimately, this is her collection and I am just the middle man. I had mistakenly assumed that each and every order would arrive in the condition that I last left it as.

I have received word of three orders arriving at their destination so far. The first one came back with a "excellent packaging" note. The second buyer was extremely disappointed, showing me pictures of a HORRIBLY destroyed package. Luckily, the items were untouched. The third order that I have heard word of its arrival is on this board, from George. I immediately responded back to him with the original pictures so he could compare the conditions, a request to thoroughly inspect his item (his proof was luckily untouched by the damaged packaging), and a promise to issue a full refund if there was anything at all wrong with his item. I emailed him instead of responding through the forum because, in all reality, the issue is between him and I. Buyer and broker/seller. You wouldn't expect David to have a private conversation through his website with his customers that have issues, would you? Of course not.

I am a fair person, and if someone received a damaged item due to shoddy packaging, they would get a full refund. If for whatever reason Sharon did not want to issue a refund, I would send them a refund with my own money, immediately and without question. When everyone was ordering from me, I kept in constant communication with everyone. Verifying orders. Verifying addresses. If something arrived damaged, I would expect you to email me immediately. I can't know about a problem if you don't tell me about it. If anyone here has had a problem with their order, please contact me. I would have hoped that you would have done so already, but maybe it needs to be said publically.

If anyone has a problem with their order, contact me. I will fix it immediately. If anyone has a problem with me asking for the money to be sent to me as a gift, contact me. I will send you your PayPal fee back immediately. I always send my money through PayPal as a gift. I feel that the seller should receive the exact amount that the item was sold for. Maybe other people do it differently? If so, that's FINE by me. It's my own fault for not stating so in the rules. And because it's my own fault, I am taking responsibility. This is the same exact thing I would have (and have) offered in a private message or email if you had sent one. I'm not saying things publically and acting different away from the message boards, lol.

I am sorry I assumed the items would be packaged professionally. I am sorry that I assumed that everyone would be sending the money as a gift through PayPal. Most people did, some did not. When I asked for it from those people, all of them except one (which again, is completely fine) sent it to me without any issue whatsoever. No one is getting screwed in the slightest. If you want a refund, you'll get it. I'll even include your shipping and PayPal fees. It'll be like it never happened. If someone feels cheated or "talked into" sending me a PayPal fee, I will give it back. I sent the same exact messages to everyone. Copy and paste, copy and paste. Everyone heard pretty much the same things from me.

Thank you for reading, and I'm sorry one last time for any inconveniences. I hope to hear from each and everyone involved, either publically or privately, about their Unveiling experience.

It amazes me how poorly some people package things--especially things that can be easily damaged. I'll always have my first 1/1 Gunslinger story to tell :(

The thing about Paypal gift, which I recently found out the hard way, is that it offers zero protection for buyers. You can't even file a claim against a "gift" transaction.

As a seller who accepts electronic funds there's always going to be that cost of doing business.

I haven't actually received my package yet but I saw it yesterday and it looked fine to me - a pretty large and sturdy box with more than enough room to accomodate the three books inside. I have to pick it up at the Post Office today as I need to pay €20 customs tax and I didn't have any cash on me when the mailman delivered the package but I'll report back once I have it in my possession. I just wanted to give Shannon and the group a heads up because I think he did the best he could within the construction that Sharon and he set up for the sale. Thank you Shannon!

*edit: I just picked it up and the books survived the trip to Europe in perfect condition.

I just wrote this to Shannon, but thought I'd like to say it separately here as well. As an afterthought, I should have written to Shannon first before posting but I was on my way out the door and just wanted to let folks know what I'd gotten. Honestly I wasn't thinking about him at all, but the seller (whose name was on the package received), and it wasn't until I got back and saw that I'd received a few e-mails myself that it occured to me that it might have reflected badly on him.

I knew about the eBay "Gift" payment not being covered by their protection, but again because it was Shannon working the sale I didn't worry about it ... but yes, I normally don't use that except with people I know because it's easy to get burned ... I'd never use it for a normal eBay purchase. I do hope that Sharron will work with whomever is affected without any issues; I don't see why she wouldn't, but then again I don't know her.

My real concern is for the TDT community in general; if things end up finishing badly with this sale, even for just a few customers, it could leave a bad taste in everybody's mouth and might deter others from doing the same (or RF not allowing it) which is bad for everyone looking to add new titles to their collection. I hope this doesn't end up being the case! I like what Shannon did and don't fault him for the sellers choices, whether it be prices or packaging.

And, like I told Shannon, I hope that for all the work and trouble that he was compensated nicely either with a rare title missing from the collection or a nice wad of cash!

I hope to hear from each and everyone involved, either publically or privately, about their Unveiling experience.

I was pretty pleased with the whole thing. I guess I was the repondee who mentioned "excellent packaging." I ordered three items of varying sizes (book, newspaper supplement, magazine) and they were nicely protected. And they arrived in the condition stated. It was sort of a fun afternoon with the whole "unveiling" concept. A fair amount of anticipation, expectation, etc.

Two items of concern: I'm surprised that George's items were not adequately packaged for shipping. Sharon is not a novice at this. She has long maintained a presence on ABE as Book Magician. Whether or not that is a physical store or just an online business name I do not know but she has obviously been shipping out books for quite some time and really should do an adequate packing job on every order. I'm really surprised to hear of George's problem. Maybe it was the fault of the postal service? They can destroy even the most carefully packed box.

The other was the request for additional funds after the PayPal transaction had been completed. It is generally the seller's burden to absorb transaction costs associated with the sale unless stated otherwise at the beginning. I was taken aback by the request to send additional money after the transaction was done. I didn't make a stink about it since it wasn't all that much money but still......

But, on the whole it was a well done event and I was happy to add some new items to my collection.

Bob, I have no doubt that USPS was responsible for the torn open and wet packaging (obviously), but the packaging itself has to lay with Sharon. I agree completely, she should have known better than to send a $300 softcover proof wrapped only in a single layer of small bubblewrap and brown mailing paper ... yet nonetheless that's what she did. A little cardboard reinforcement and extra layer of bubblewrap or peanuts or even crumpled paper would have gone a long way, IMO.

First off, my apologies to any member who purchased something from the auction and wasn't pleased. I myself bought a few items and when I received the package today I was less than pleased. After reading some of the experiences members had I contacted Shannon and voiced my concerns. I feel that by allowing the "unveiling", I bear some of the public responsibility.
Shannon is aware that I am disclosing this PM conversation:

Damaged packaging

I received my book order today and it really was some of the shoddiest packaging I've ever seen. Despite the package being ripped and banged, there appears to only be a small ding to the corner of the paperback "Silver Bullet".
I feel compelled to post the pictures in the forum, not so much as a slight against you, but as an example of the owner doing a pathetic job.
Additionally, it wasn't mentioned in the ads, but the books reek strongly of cigarette smoke. So bad that I put them in my garage and will have to take time and effort to prop them up in front of a fan and splay them open to reduce/eliminate the smell.

You personally didn't package them, but you represent the seller, and by allowing you to post the ads in the way you did, I defacto in a member's eyes represent you. I will hold off posting the images until I hear back from you, but it is a matter that I believe should be discussed on the forums.

Jerome

Here are pictures of the package I received today:

I trust Shannon will satisfy any member's complaints, and if not I would like to be advised.

Additionally, I believe (but cannot compel him to) Shannon should refund all of the charges member's paid after the fact when they were informed that the funds were to be sent as a "gift". Shannon could have simply refunded the initial payment, and then the buyer resubmit their payment as a gift (if they chose to do so) with no fees.
The books reeking of cigarette smoke should have been disclosed.

Once again, I apologize to any member who is less than pleased with the transactions, and urge them to work it out with Shannon, and if for some reason the problem isn't solved, please contact me personally.

That is some seriously bad packaging.

Anyone who sells anything, whether it's one item or many items needs to disclose everything upfront before the sale. I don't recall anything about these books being from a smoker's environment. I'm not a smoker and can't stand books that have the slightest odor of smoke in them. I wouldn't even have looked at these had I known this information.

If I were doing this, I would've at least had a conversation with the person doing the packaging to make sure they were doing it sufficiently since these are such expensive books and I'm the one representing those books in online transactions.

I try to always use boxes and bubble wrap, protecting the edges and fill out the box with newspaper so there's no movement when you shake it. If I use an envelope, I'll put the item in plastic between two pieces of cardboard and tape it up.

I sent the recent Night Shift Dolso case in a box as described via UPS insured and it arrived in perfect condition.

I lost out on the PayPal fee and insurance/S&H but that's what you have to do sometimes to make a sale and the customer happy.

I never said you HAVE to refund the fee for each person. I said cannot compel you to do so. But since you have offered, I encourage anyone who wants a fee refund to request it from you. I feel reasonably assured you will resolve any and all issues. Once again, I myself can't issue a refund, but if any member is dissatisfied with a transaction on this "unveiling", and can't resolve it in private with Shannon, please contact me.
