I have often thought it would be an interesting project to take beat up, jacketless copies of the five early Doubleday books and have them rebound. Maybe even ex-library copies would work if the interior text blocks were free of library stamping. I would find a high end custom binder to create designs or motifs on the boards that somehow were meaningful to the book itself. Just let an artist have free rein to create something unique and very special. I would have full leather bindings (the good kind that smell like actual leather, not that bonded leather crap) and probably gold gilt page edges. For what I am thinking it might cost upwards of $800 to $1000 for each book but they could be real show pieces. I never got around to it though. Maybe someday.

Full leather would be fantastic. It looks like this book is "half bound" (if I understand the term), as it has a leather binding and leather corners. I bet it sells.
I agree. I remember seeing your original post about this when I was wading through all the old threads and I had bookmarked it at the time meaning to ask you about it, and whether you ever got it off the ground... I think it's a great idea...
BTW, I have something(s) up my sleeve currently in the works. They may not be as impressive as $1K per book, but then again they might surprise folks.

I've been bidding on that the past week and wouldn't go higher than $125 maybe $130. Oh well....some day. I don't get why some people are asking such ridiculous prices on this book - some guy is asking almost $300. No fucking way!
I actually went to $150 (against my better judgement) and was actually relieved when it went higher than that. I'm willing to be patient on this one as I already have a first edition on my shelf in nice condition, but it's a second printing.

Congrats! I was watching that one but decided it just wasn't clean enough to warrant the price I was expecting it to go for (+$150). Surprised the bidding stopped when it did though. Well done!
