Tell us more about the box restoration.
Tell us more about the box restoration.
Well, perhaps restoration is too "grand" of a means in which to describe it but, significant "detail work" was done to restore it to "new" condition.
Basically, when I bought the Box/Book, the Box was pretty beat up and had several fairly deep scratches all over the lid, sides, and bottom. It wasn't in a condition to where I could simply paint over the scratches as they were too deep and the gouges would have most definitely been noticeable.
Even the plate was scratched pretty badly and in need of replacement.....
I started by sanding the box, by hand, to the point where all paint AND scratches were removed and the wood was returned to its natural state (looked pretty cool). I then tested several types of paint with varying finishes/applications to ensure that I achieved the right "look" regarding both color and finish. After several tests, it turned out to be a simple matte, no gloss, Black SPRAY paint that can be found at your local Hardware store. Brushes didn't work (left marks) and the paint was too thick. It was important that the coating of paint was transparent enough to allow the woodgrain to show through (albeit only a little).
As for the Plate, well a very good friend within the TDT Family advised me as to where I could get a replacement made and I ordered 3 of them from a local engraving shop in the Northeast. Have two plates left if anyone else needs an extra.
So, it was a lot of detail work that, off and on, took about 10-12 hours. Probably not a true restoration as described in the "How To" Thread but certainly proud as to how it eventually turned out!
Very cool addition, Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That artwork is really neat!
Were the SOD's remarques done AFTER the book was published or were they included as part of the lettered edition by the publisher?
I'm sure if there is intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe, they are wise enough to stay away from us.
And the people bowed and prayed, to the cell phone god they made...
Tim, re: the limited 'Salem's Lot and the book of interviews... awesome! Did you only get the interviews from David or the whole 'package'? I noticed that the book is unnumbered and I seem to remember reading about it. Didn't Jerad have one or two personal copies that came with the interviews? There are so many states of this book, I can't remember them all.
Michaël, I got both the Book AND Interviews piece directly from David. There were 5 unnumbered copies of the Deluxe Edition produced along with about 10 Bounded copies of "The Interviews". The 5 unnumbered copies are identical to the Red/Black Roman Numeral Numbered Copies.
The Interviews piece is cool. It is bound in the same Japanese Cloth as the #'d S/Ls with a matching slipcase. They definitely look good on the shelf together!
UPDATED COLLECTION ON 4/20
To my friends at TDT:
As many of you know, over the course of the last couple of months, I have sold off a majority of my S/L Collection. My intention was to "tighten" the collection by focusing on the acquisition of the more "rare" items while strengthening my collection of Dark Tower editions. I have updated ALL pictures at the beginning of this Thread so I invite you to browse through (again) to see if there is anything that is of interest.
The recent additions to my "tighter" collection include:
- S/L Gunslinger LETTERED AF
- Deluxe 'Salem's Lot (1 of 5 Not Numbered)
- SOD I and II Chadbourne Remarqued LETTERED M Editions
- 1st/1st Gunslinger Remarqued by Michael Whelan and Inscribed "For Tim"
- 1st/1st The Waste Lands Remarqued by Ned Dameron (3 Copies)
- 1st/1st Wizards and Glass Remarqued by Dave McKean (2 Copies)
- 1st/1st Duma Key Remarqued by Don Maitz (2 Copies)
