My theory on the price is that due to its scarcity it is sought after by many completest/collectors. In a normal situation, many of these collectors would have been able to buy a copy when it was on presale, but because these were part of a contest, these collectors were not able to control whether they got them before they hit the secondary market. So now those super collectors are fighting each other over them.
Its possible the next one might go for less, since the person willing to pay the most is (probably) out of the market. But that's probably wishful thinking.

Just to throw a discussion in here about another 1 of 100 release and the scarcity of these types of editions in the collecting world.....I know of a Full Dark No Star 1 of 100 signed edition in custom tray that sold for $2300. Yep, $2300. People are looking for these rarer editions for their collections.
OK, back to the normal broadcast special.

Rare usually commands more. There were 1,250 Numbered and 52 lettered of The Stand, thus they are expensive, but can be readily obtained. Things like a Danse Macabre Lettered (15), or a TGWLTG lettered (15) and most any S/L with a limitation of ~100 or less-particularly those that collectors couldn't arrange for in advance are always going to command a princely sum.
Hi Ralph, this was released before I became a collector, so not familiar with how it was released other then whats mentioned in the Catalog (notice how I capitalized it ;-) ) . I suspect this is a similar phenomenon, since it appears this went on sale to members of the Science Fiction Book Club, which I am guessing not many of the hard core collectors were members of, and maybe they were all spoken for by the time they found out?
Anyone know the full details on the requirements to be able to buy a copy during its original offering?
Technically these two editions belong on my list of "needs" to complete my collection, but not sure how hard I will pursue them, since they are not that remarkable other then their rarity. If I find that "deal" by being patient, then I'll jump on it, otherwise, not sure I am prepared to pay 2K+ for either of these.

This is very off-topic, but I do find how collectibles are priced to be fascinating - particularly when looking at buying vs selling within online communities.
Selling a rarity into an online community of collectors for a particular genre of items will tend to gain a high price. You're already selling into a group that values that rarity, and there is a groupthink effect where a few transactions at a certain price generates a consensus that the item it "worth it" at that price. Certainly, selling that rarity into a general audience who don't have that consensus of desire or value will fetch a lower price.
Paradoxically, there is also the general belief that belonging to such a community enables not just the opportunity to buy such items, but to get them *at a lower price than you would outside the community* - which contradicts the situation, above.
So you get these weird situations where an item considered to be worth $X.00 by experts actually sells for far less in a general forum, because it doesn't have the visibility of the people conditioned to value it more.

Well, indeed. It's not a universal thing by any means; just interesting to watch sometimes.
King is kind of a special case, too, in that he has much more widespread demand when it comes to collectibles. I was actually thinking of non-King online communities in my stream-of-consciousness post above.
