Very true. It's as if someone told him when he was young that there must be a sex scene now and then... and he wishes he could do without it, but alas, law is law, he didn't invent the rule so it isn't up to him to change it...

April: do you think we could move it to Cara Laughs, so we can talk about all King books, not only the DT?
I know what you mean, Jean. I feel the same way with Jean Auel. I love Ayla's story, but learned to skip over the "pleasures" scenes because if I read them I'd get awful tired of her shit fast. There's porn out there people, we don't need the bullshit sex scenes, if I wanted that I'd read Harlequinn Super-Romance novels, or w/e they're called.

I was going to say that the "hand asleep" quote was from Gone in 60 Seconds, too!
Also like Jean Auel..she gets tiring with the "mating", and if she's going to do another book...let's get to it already...
JB..if you like her do I ever have some good ones you'd like..18 books in the series so far...dying for more..
With SK's books..it flows so well that I don't even think twice about the references..'cept maybe a chuckle..I just don't like people throwing in a "fuck" for fuck's sake..Like..ooh..I'll put a fuck here and then another one later....

Couldn't agree more. A few years ago I tried to check out The Shelters of Stone, to see if Auel had let go of her old habits, but alas, no. Threw it away pretty quickly.
Now that's a book full of unnecessary "junk" references, if there's one.

I read them, and I like them, but I skip all the sex. And is it just me or does Jondalar have a premature ejaculation problem?

There's also a Dave Chappelle skit about "strangers". Pretty funny.

What series is it, LR? I'd like to hear about it. 18 books sounds like alot of good reading, i never want my good stories to end, and when they do I'm like

People of the Sea was the first one I read..then I went on the hunt for the rest...

My ex wife wouldn't let me name one of the children Sun Chaser or Kestril. (sure that spelling is wrong)...I loved that book.

People of the River was also really good. I had no idea about those two together, I'll have to pick the up after I'm done with Drood.

Aahhhhh. Kestrel, which is also a bird I'd love to be if I could choose my form.

Have you ever checked out their website..it really explains the last two..I'm about to start with People of the Wolf and read them all again...I would have let you use those names..Can't remember which book it was but so many of the names were so close that I got them mixed up and couldn't tell the men from the women for a while..The Contrary in the last two doesn't hold with come of the other Contraries they wrote about...

Agree JB - I love this series & often re-read it.
But I skip most of those scenes now too. Don't know why she went so far with it - she has a magnificent series of books there that certainly did not need any silly spicing-up to market them (if anything it might do the opposite).
I keep (& keep, & keep) waiting for the next book in the series too - hope she gets to it sometime soon.

Well, this started out as a DT thread, and got moved to Cara Laughs, but maybe it should actually be Dutch Hill: no one has mentioned King for quite a while.

No, that wouldn't be entirely fair to say. Both genders have some folk with less class than others. I've known girls who tried too hard to match that idea... which can cause no end of trouble.

I am very glad that this thread got moved here-- how could we really discuss it without bringing up Richie Tozier?

Well, you know... this is part of who SK is. Like some of his characters, there's a side of him that is brash and a little ignorant. Yet it's a side which I am still quite fond of.

Actually me too! And I rarely stop reading books.

As for the mention of, er hands, I had a mate who told me he liked to put his hand in the fridge to make it numb so it felt like someone else. (I'm not sure if he was serious though, he would sometimes say disturbing things for a reaction. That one made me laugh though.)

The same guy had one of the receptionists at our work paint his nails for him... I'm not sure he had it done for that reason but.. well.. he got a thrill out of it the next morning apparently...

As for King, I think he does sometimes go too far, but he isn't as bad as many writers. I think that scene in the Stand
    Spoiler:
between the Kid and Trashy should have been left out. I'll admit I found the gun barrel part rather funny but I could have done without the detailed description...
