I didn't post this in the remainder pricing thread because it seems that's for 1st editions, and these were not 1st printings. But I thought it would be interesting to post. I found this at a Barnes & Noble store in their Bargain section.
I've been told that I'm going to need a shoulder replacement. The arthritis in my left shoulder is so bad that it's caused a number of bone spurs to develop, so that the orthopedist said it's like fitting a square peg in a round hole. This is causing me a substantial amount of pain, too. It gets worse as the day goes, so that the pain level is a 7-9 on a 10-point scale by evening.
Has anyone here had such a surgery? What can I expect?
John
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
Hope everything goes well and painless, John.

Speedy recovery John. Make sure they give you good pills!

The absence of water? The absence of anything else we're addicted to.

Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery.
Hi John,
I cannot give you specifics about that surgery, but I can give you some of my experience.
My girlfriend have had a very strong scoliosis since being a teenager. Being scottish, their NHS told her, when being a teen, that it was nothing serious.
A few years back, she was complaining that she had a lot of backpain.
My best friend is disabled and lives in a wheelchair. He told her that he had a similar surgery about 10 years ago and mentionned that that the best back surgeons being in Paris, we should meet one, and see what he says. We did. After a few meetings, we got some impressive (not in a good way), xrays.
Imagine some kind of U-bend under the sink?
>>> That's very pretty much what was her spine.
The surgeon was recommending her to go through a back surgery (by him and another world recognised surgeon). If she didnt want the surgery, it could have let her to have some breathing problems when getting older. Or walking problems. And many other things.
So she did have the surgery. The best part was that for a stay of 2 weeks at hospital + surgery + 1 month in a recovery center... i only had to pay her TV /phone
She doesnt regret it. The xrays dont necessarily look like a big improvement, but the professors / surgeons are confident in the fact that it's a lot better for her know. She still has some pain, but its nothing compared to before and it will help her for her future.
It's not the same thing as you, but I hope that somehow this will help you. The main thing is : you are in a LOT of pain. I would guess that things will only get worst if you dont do anything. So, what do you have to lose?
Surgeons are professionnals, they know what they do. There is obviously always a risk, which, usually is minor. And it's not like they are operating on your spine... but your shoulder.
My advice : think about how much it could improve your life. The rest is your decision.
Hope things gets better.
Best.
