ebay would likely (if asked) remove a negative (or "positive") feedback expressing displeasure about an off site deal that never came to fruition.
That's the world we live in. There is great protection for both parties on a BIN auction, but if you and the seller are not in lockstep about the price and timing, shit happens...

Thanks for your responses everyone. It was not a high priced item at all so it's not really that big of a deal. The part that bugged me was the communication and also now the lack of a response after sending two messages. It's kind of like "if I just ignore you, you will go away" and I don't know of any human being that likes being ignored. I think telling folks my situation helped get whatever gripe I have out of my system. I certainly don't want to burn any bridges so I just need to let it go. Thanks guys!

Me personally, Tommy, I don't play the snipe game with eBay. I place a bid on what I'm willing to pay and if it sells for more, so be it. Only related to your situation as you forgot to bid on it. I simply wouldn't have rebid on the item once it went back to auction type or my highest bid would have been whatever the BIN price was going to be. Poor comm on the seller's part or they just simply didn't care. Sorry to hear ya paid double what ya wanted too. At least it was inexpensive.

I normally don't bid on auctions either, mostly BIN when I do buy from ebay but even though I did pay more than what I could have, it was still a good deal, I guess, the book still needs to show up for me to inspect. After waiting 6 days and then in the last ten minutes see the bids go up, I panicked bid, which, is the reason why I usually don't do auctions in the first place.

sounds to me like he could have worked you. After gauging your interest, he didnt respond, but relisted it and possibly put in some shill bids to drive the price up, thus selling the item for twice as much. I feel like that sometimes you must be very careful tipping your hand on ebay, especially if it is a lower cost item for a "nice price"

I did think about that as well but there was more than one bidder, three actually. Four including me. If dude went to that much trouble, he might deserve the extra money. I definitely agree about tipping my hand though. I won't do that again either. Thanks!

It is weird now that I look at the other bidders. All three of them have only bid on one or two things but they all have scores over 200. Also, I was the only one watching the item.

And I finally got a response just now. They say they will "send an adjustment on the shipping via paypal" which is strange since shipping was free. We will see....

Integrity. It is something that I have found most collectors to have in the King collecting world... MOST. I am here to tell you a story about a member here. He is a long time super collector and is now starting to sell off his collection for retirement. I approached him on a book awhile back. That book was a Lettered Regulators. I quite liked this chap... I respected him and I thought highly of him. He has shown his true colors and I am here to warn fellow members. Beware. After a day or so of chatting to which I have ALL messages saved thus being able to prove my story here, we came to an impasse. He wanted bottom dollar of $6000US for said book shipped and I was at $5750 and I pay for shipping of the book. My wife was not wanting me to go above that number. The member gave me 48 hours to agree to the $6K as that was his best. This was a Wednesday night. I went to sleep and had trouble sleeping as anyone here knows.. that book is my HOLY GRAIL and my MUST HAVE. I awoke early and immediately (again proof) said we have a deal. Within minutes of my PM to him... I was told this:
"Nope. Firm offer of $7500 came in. Had no idea it would. Like I said sorry.
I'm going with the $7500.
Not being a problem but I'm glad you gave me your final offer from wife. Not even 10 minutes later a guy offered me $7500.
Only thing I have left is Regulators Lettered prototype.
I've lost many a deal because I could not close the deal.

Sorry... but this goes against every principle of this site and what we are all here for. What happened to the two days at the very least? The book wasn't even sold! And... an offer came in less than 10 mins after I agree to his terms? really? Hmmmmm.... AND after only 12 hours of my supposed 48? I am sorry but that is wrong. I asked a few chaps that have been here longer than me what they thought.. and they all said.. NOT COOL. This collector doesn't care about you... or your collection. He is ready to sell.. to the highest bidder whether there is deals in place OR NOT. I will never do that to someone. I have helped as many collectors as I can. I can tell you that when this collection goes live... be wary. And be careful. When you care so much about something, it hurts when someone you thought so highly of just cares about his pocket book and a deal.... is just not a deal. I even gave this person another chance at redemption... twice. He choose to ignore those chances. Why? Cause he doesn't care and integrity is something that is not in his repertoire. Enjoy your extra few dollars after commission was paid Michael Pasiuk. One thing I can say is... my integrity is still intact...

I know I'm no veteran on the forums, but on an item of that price passing up a 1500$ difference just because someone made them an offer first seems kind of silly. Sure, it may not be the friendliest approach, and I see how that informal rule should apply in small sales, but in larger sales I don't think it's a crime to take the highest offer at any point before the sale is finalized. Just my opinion.

Are you really chiming in with complaining on agreeing to a price that you agreed and sold the proof for? Your unreal and I've held my tongueso far but go fys you still want to stand on your high horse of I'm bad guy? I had a member here and there are another handful here that have done 8k to 14k plus deals with me Mike being involved in more than a couple and theres been no safety net but we all hold are end speakinhg of 2 1/2 years later still waiting on the $30 shipping you owe me, keep it.

These things are very difficult after the fact (as opposed to before the fact )
If I myself was negotiating to buy something-particulaly something of high value (for the sake of this converstion high value being >$2K), I'd try to make sure that if given a 48 hour window to come up in my offer, I'd want to make sure that it was an exclusive offer and that I had "locked in the book" for 48 hours at the price I was offered.

If I were the seller, I would "try" to make clear that any higher offer would be immediately accepted.

These things are sticky. Pretty much on the site, agreements are given a "handshake" and they stick.
I wouldn't want my reputation as a seller to be tarnished over $1.5K or more, but I also know the difficulties of offering people something at a price and they vacillate, thus I wouldn't feel as if I did something wrong by a non-exclusive price window.

It all comes down to communication-and clear terms.
