I'm with you there. The AE states "First Edition" and the Grant/Scribner hybrid states "First Trade Edition."

I assume there's a difference, but yeah, which came first???? I say the AE.
A 1st/1st Trade is simply that. An Artist Edition is a 1st/1st AE.
Just After Sunset had a "Collector's Edition" that stated "First Edition", however to most collector's it isn't a 1st/1st Trade.
As to what is the worlds First, that is an entirely different and comlpicated discussion.
Ahhh Haaa.....that is the real question I was trying to get at. What really came first? I think the AE editions did making them the true first.

    Good discussion question.

Well, I suppose if logic applies (not being associated with the printing industry) the edition cannot be published until the Artist drawings are completed and added to the final draft. Assuming, that if they are doing special additions, they are run first so they can be sent out for signature before binding (as evidenced by the "updates from CD on SODII) then I guess the Author/Artist and S/L, would be the true first/first's. No?

Default Ideal Genuine Man (The) Question

Beg everyones indulgence, this will be merged very shortly with the Collecting Questions thread.
My 1st/1st trade of The Ideal Genuine Man (published by Stephen King's Philtrum Press) has an added on sticker (Note: the picture doesn't show the edges, but it is an added sticker, not a stamp) to the copyright page. Would someone here please check their copy and see if it is the same?

    TIA.
    RF

In Hutch's First Editions list, Different Seasons is listed as "Quarter bound in dark blue cloth, blue boards". I'll have to dig my copy out, but I trust Dave.

Mine's blue/blue, so perhaps there's a typo in the catalog?

Quarter bound in black cloth with dark blue boards having white pastedowns.
The spine (quarters) are deep blue Navy-described as cloth, but could be another material, the boards both front and back of the book are dark blue-the interior pastesdowns and free front endpapers are white.
Good point. I appreciate any and all corrections.

Looking for some non-King ARCs/proofs (don't worry I won't poach yours!). I was wondering if anyone has any contacts at Hodder & Stoughton, Viking, Signet, or Cemetery Dance that they might be willing to share and/or might be willing to do a little investigation for me?

PM me if you can help out!

I remember, several years ago, having some difficulty distinguishing a real first edition, first printing of DIFFERENT SEASONS from some of the full sized book club editions. IIRC, the full sized BCE's were being auctioned on eBay as first editions. But now I can't remember all the details. I do think that the full sized BCE's used a very similar binding to the first editions.

Some points to consider: The price on the inner flap of the dj of $16.95 is, of course, very important as is the date code of 0882 at the lower corner.

The first editions have the book title stamped in gold on the spine of the book. Later printings have the title stamped in blue. There is no number line on the copyright page of the first edition, first printing copies. Beginning with the second printings of the trade edition there is a number line stopping at "2." I seem to recall the full sized BCE's having no number line which added to the confusion.

Isn't there an Aesop's fable that has a snake offering a mouse a ride on his back to cross the river? The snake promises the mouse he won't eat him. The mouse accepts (reluctantly) but, of course, halfway across the river the snake eats the mouse saying "You knew I was a snake when you accepted the ride."

    I'm not saying......I'm just saying.

haha fair enough. I don't collect King ARCs - the only one I have was a gift from David. I'm after Michael Slade ones right now.

But point taken - perhaps I should ask instead that if anyone has contacts within these publishers, would they be willing to help me obtain some Slade ARCs/proofs. I'll pay whatever you have to plus 10% for your "brokerage".

I was just poking some fun, of course. Still collecting can be cutthroat hobby at times. Solid connections are generally worth keeping to yourself. I (as well as most serious collectors) have taken my share of stabs in the back. And, now that I think about it, must confess to delivering a few.

I'm curious to know the condition of the first edition copies of The Dark Tower II that are signed by Phil Hale. Are they shrinkwrapped? Fine condition?

Has anyone bought one of these? I'm thinking about buying one but only if they are in good condition.

If you mean the ones from Grant, then they'll be in new condition. No shrinkwrap though.

Yeah, I meant the ones from Grant (if they have any left?). There's a couple on ABE that I've been watching around $60 so I figured it would be beneficial to pay the extra $15 and go with Grant with the added signature

Now, tracking down a reasonably priced W&G might be a tad more difficult.

W&G as with many King books is falling in value due to the economy right now.

Try getting a hold of Tippy4 - I know he has a number of copies at reasonable prices.

The one I got from Grant a while ago (2005) came in an opened shrinkwrap. I assume the shrinkwrap had been opened so that Hale could sign it.

Well then, I'm okay with the failing economy if it means that SK books are more affordable. Sorry Obama.

Two questions related to Phil Hale:

Has anyone ever seen a 2nd Edition Drawing of the Three signed by Hale?

And also, has anyone ever seen a remarque with his signature in ANY book?
