"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
I would be grateful for some help on two first edition questions.
I have a large format UK Danse Macabre 1st Paperback coming. I have heard the US version was released simultaneously with the hardback, my question is, 'was this the same for the UK edition?'. Is the large format PB and the 1st hardback both UK true first editions?
Also, I have seen a few US Hardbacks with a GBP price on the inner front flap followed by the statement 'export only'. They also have a full numberlines . Are these the US first editions or are they export editions? The titles I've seen are Insomnia, Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game.
Thanking you in advance for your help.
Posting some early proof copies of FEAR ITSELF on the proof thread got me to thinking about this copy of the book that I have. I have always thought it was odd because I have never seen another like it. According to the limitation page there were 5,000 trade edition copies and 225 special signed edition copies.
The 225 special signed edition copies are easy enough to find. There are probably more than 225 as I also have one that is stamped "Presentation Copy" at the bottom of the signature page. King signed these as well as 10 other contributors for a total of 11 signatures on the signature page.
The special signed edition copies have a dust jacket and are bound in leather of some sort that is maroon in color and stamped with gold lettering.
But I have another copy that is bound in black material (I don't think it is leather). No dust jacket but housed in a slipcase with a color picture added to the front. Also has special endpapers.
I have taken some photos. The book in question is on the left in all of them and a copy of the regular special signed edition is on the right. Both copies have all of the signatures. I can't find the book listed anywhere and have always wondered if there were any others out there.
I've never seen that one before. Neat!!
John
Very nice Bob, I've never seen that version either.

I have one of those. It has an extra signature by a certain film director. I gave details of it a while ago to Jerome to add it to the S/L page, but nothing happened.
Technically, if it is an "Extra" signature, and I'm assuming not one included in the rest of the edition, should it be listed in the catalog, Mr. R.T.? I'm more than likely incorrect in this, but I thought the catalog listed only the official publisher offerings. I'd appreciate any "schooling" coming my way. You've got to learn something new everyday, IMHO

I'm not real familiar with this edition, but to, Mr/ R.T.'s post was there a specific list of signatures for the edition announced?

I'm just trying to understand. Forgive me if I seem obtuse. If the "official" publisher announcement was 11 contributors for the print run, then why should your copy, which is cool enough to include 12 signatures the extra being a film director, be lsted in the catalog? Yours is the only copy to have 12 signatures, yes? All the other print run copies have only the announced 11, yes? If so, the catalog should only reflect the 11 sigbatures, right? Or am I confused again?
I mean if I were to take any S/L to a King signing event and obtain a second signature, the catalog shouldn't reflect that should it?

You are confused These are 2 distinctly different King Signed Limited Editions. The catalog lists all versions of signed/limiteds, i.e. Lettered, Numbered, PCs, Audio, Gift, Prototypes and portfolios.
This is what is in the datalog: Fear Itself signed Limited 1/225 issued without a slipcase, unnumbered, signed by all eleven contributors. Fully leather bound.
The "new" one that Bob and myself pictured is a separate (better?) edition, which has different end papers, different binding, includes slipcase, but has exactly the same signature sheet. I do not know how many were issued. This would be classed as a "Presentation Copy", or an "Artist Copy".
The fact that mine has an extra signature is neither here nor there. It's no different than someone getting a Chadbourne remarque in their S/L.
