I think the prices will spike when that dark day comes (but we're talking 20+ years away, probably), but even that will be artificial and will likely roll back quickly.
Once you're out of sight, it doesn't take long for the next big thing to overtake you.
I think the price spike we saw a few years back was just like real estate - thanks to Internet knowledge, an active marketplace, etc., people thought because they COULD buy it, meant they SHOULD buy it. And then, just like real estate, there was a glut of overpriced limited of tepid quality (think condos in Las Vegas).
Long story short, the zenith has passed - except for the big ticket items like DT I, Asbestos Firestarter, etc.
