was roland dead through the 7 books? they never really said what happened after jerico hill where the rest of his comrades passed on into the clearing. did roland really die there to and then was his quest for the tower his own pergatory/hell? tell me what u think about this
If he were already dead it would have made the whole ordeal with the lobstrosities and the subsequent infection seem pretty pointless. The dead don't suffer from things like that because they're, well, dead.
If I remember well it was written down many times that he was the only survivor.
And there are lots of other things that wouldn't make any sense if Roland were dead. RoG has given a great example already.
Roland would have understood.
Have to agree with the others on this Mike. Roland being dead certainly never occured to me, and it doesn't ring true for me when I see it written down there.

I thought it did say specifically somewhere that Roland survived Jericho Hill by hiding amongst the corpses and pretending to be dead until all the enemies had vacated.

However, during the time between Jericho Hill and "The Man in Black....." he could have "Died" or passed to another level of the "Tower" I guess. I assume Ms. Furth will definitively answer this question in the comics.
Then again we all know what happens when "you assume".

More than one revision of The Gunslinger? *spoilers*
I know there is a revised edition where certain things are cut out and other things mroe connected to the rest of the series are put in. But it seems I have a copy that things are just cut UP.
The first time I read this book, it was a copy from when it was first written. Now I have a set of all 7 Dark Tower books, and when I re-read The Gunslinger in that set, it seemed that the last scene with the man in black was cut short. He rushed through the fortune telling or something. I don't know if the whole book had things "rushed" like that, but I definitely noticed with that scene. They took out an important line, the one where he says, "Death. But not for you, Gunslinger. Never for you." & all the rest. The "Never for you" part is left out in the one I have. What's with that?
" A grinnig reaper cluched a sythe with bony fingers. "Death" the man in Black said simply "yet not for you"" That is the copy i have. There is no reiteration on it tho. I have the 1998 signet classic edition, maybe there are dif ones?
I have an edition by Plume that is a softcover. I think it was from 1987 or 1988. This is the version where there is no mention of the number 19. This is the biggest difference I noticed between the versions.
There has only been one revised version of The Gunslinger. Are you perhaps reading it in another language where translation has altered it?
A part of the problem may be that Roland remembers the line ("death: but not for you...") several times in the subsequent books. I believe the wording in those is slightly different, and perhaps enhanced a bit. If you are remembering one of those quotes, and ascribing it to the first use in DT I, well, it would make it seem like there had been a change.

I'm working on an interpretive quilt panel on a scene from Dark Tower. My copies (all of them, sob) of the books are currently on loan, so I was wondering if anyone can help me recall the trio of images that includes an "unfound door" from one of the later books? Thank you so much!
