As Matt mentioned, it is loosely based on the Amanda Knox trial. I'm not that familiar with that case, so I wouldn't have known if my sister didn't tell me.

I will say, the film is less about the case and more about Matt Damon's character building this beautiful relationship with a local woman and her daughter. It's only playing in theaters right now.
