Awesome score Harrison!

That "Carrie" paperback that you have front and center on the shelf below was my very first King book! I bought it and read it when I was 8 years old.

Crazy right? That's what happens when you leave 8-year-old book hounds to fend for themselves! It started a life long affection (some would say obsession) with Stephen King's work. I posted about it here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?255-Your-First-SK-Book&p=324309&viewfull=1#post324309).

I loved that story. Very well written. "Frau Hutt" (among other things) had me laughing aloud like a lunatic. I have to admit that I got my copy of Carrie for a slightlly better price: 52 cents. Sounds like we both got our money's worth, though. And then some.

I'm not sure what led me to actually purchase The Gunslinger S/L Audio Tapes - maybe I'm looking for things that don't seem to show up as much for sale. It only cost me $20 over the original issue price, so I was happy to get it and add another S/L to my shelves:

Hello, love the audio tapes, good job. Just added a "MISC" section to my bibliography/stuff to buy list. Includes the tapes, the recipes, the crossword puzzle he did, the Duma Key tennis balls, the snowglobe promo thing, so on and so on.

But I had a question, to anyone reading. Something ELazansky just said has me thinking about something. He said "maybe I'm looking for things that don't seem to show up as much for sale". As time goes on, more and more people find the art of collecting Stephen King. I became an official collector at the end of last year. Now, with some items having very little quantities (lettered books, for example, come to mind), and with a collector "collecting" things, and holding onto them, doesn't it make sense that some items would disappear from the market completely?

My thought (before the question) is that DAMN, I have to go out and get the GOOD STUFF NOW before people scoop them all up and hold onto them.

My question: So far, is there anything completely off the market yet? I've seen the grails here and there, they're expensive, but they seem to always be available. Is there anything that is gone as of right now?

Just curious, thanks.

Honestly, no. With enough research and money you can find the holy grails. There are a few items that have disappeared (but not impossible to find).

The New Lieutenant's Rap comes to mind. Again, not impossible to find but quickly absorbed into the world of King collectors. This is just one example, I'm sure other members here will chime in and add to the list.

Speaking as a fairly new collector myself (only a little over 2 years) - I think I've come to find out that everyone has their own "grails" of collecting. When I first started, I thought I was going to just go after the gift and special edition books. Then I got the S/L Under the Dome UK version. After I got that one, I decided I wanted to have other S/L editions. I looked through the Catalog and decided that my "grails" were going to be The Regulators and Skeleton Crew. Bought both of those last year. Now I'm trying to determine what my next "grails" are going to be. Just realize that you probably won't be able to buy everything, either for scarcity or costs. Lettered editions are out of my price range. Many members in this forum have been collecting for 20+ years. My collection will never have the quantity as theirs, but I'm thrilled with what I have and what I continue to add to my collection. Just decide what interests you and make it your own "grail." The excitement you have when you finally obtain it will be worth it.

Shannon

Eric, I meant THE Grails as in a complete set of The Plant, a matching number set of the Dark Tower, an asbestos Firestarter, First Edition 'Salem's Lot with the first state dustjacket ... THOSE Grails, lol

I don't know what my current goal/grail would be ... I am currently collecting all the US First Editions and US Signed Limited (numbered), so probably a Gunslinger S/L ... I'm gonna buy from least expensive to most expensive, I think. Or, wherever I can pick up the best deals, lol :)

Eventually, every scarce item will become available again (unless it's destroyed). Even in the couple of years that I have been collecting I have seen several (very) significant collections come up for sale (heck, I got myself a number of great books and proofs because someone else sold them). Some books change hands quite often, others less, but if you're patient and willing to dish out the cash I'm pretty sure you can acquire at least 90% of what's out there.

Collecting all of the S/L editions certainly sounds like a daunting task. I'd probably have to take out a second mortgage or tell my kids they can't go to college to pull that off. :-)

I'm still a bit apprehensive when it comes to collecting S/L editions. So far I only have the UK S/L UNDER THE DOME and the only reason I got it was that it cost me £70. Even though I purchased some expensive proofs I never went beyond the $500 limit and I'm not sure I want to (there's one exception to that rule and that exception is being shipped to me as we speak). If $500 is my psychological barrier, I'm not sure there are many US signed/limiteds that I can hope to obtain (I'm not interested in the other UK S/Ls).

Mr. Rabbit Trick
04-08-2011, 07:29 AM
The approx cost of all the S/L is $50,000. Double that if you want the Lettered as well. And double that if you want the antholigies as well.

So you have a choice. Buy a house, or collect King. :scared:

Well I'm slowly building my collection back up. I just received yesterday a S/L Cujo. It's not the best Limited Edition, but it does look sharp on the shelf. So it's good to have another King Limited that I used to have back in my collection, and I can cross it off the list of books to get. And it's in mint condition with the plastic cover, so that's nice

This puts me at three of the five. Two of the three I've purchased in large lots for $10. We'll see how easy it is to find "The Gunslinger and the Dark Man" and "The Oracle and the Mountains". Up next: see what th going rate is for individual old issues of F&SF. I might be able to turn a profit and keep the Gunslinger stories.

There is NO CHOICE..... OF CAUSE --- COLLECT KING :panic::onfire::excited:English lesson of the day: Should be "OF COURSE" instead of "OF CAUSE". Ironically, a Mainer like Stephen King or John Cullum would likely pronounce it something like "Of cause" (although it would be closer to "of coss").

It was indeed. And I did very well thanx. Much better than ebay. Of course, I did win a contest with them and not having to pay any commision is what made it worth it.

And whomever got the IT got a nice book. Lengthy inscriptions in early true firsts are pretty valuable. (IMO).

Yea Arkham House books are fun to collect. I think it's very cool King did a story for an Arkham House book because of the history of this press.

I used to collect a lot of them, but I got rid of most and now it's just pretty much the Lovecraft books that I want. But I also have a couple Howard and Campbell books with a quirk like Lucius Shepard.

Okay, that was for all you Steve Martin fans.

Finally, my S/L FDNS is here! Arrived in perfect shape (thank you Brian). Got #414 and, though only rated at two rats it's a pretty sweet remarque, lots of nice detail and color work in the former Mrs James!
I've lost track, but don't think I've seen this particular design show up yet. Are they posted all together anywhere yet? I just checked The Collector's page, he has a few but not too many. Guess I may as well start collecting DT #414s (anyone? anyone?) By the way, if I saw this SK signature anywhere else, I wouldn't think it was legit!

This one has "The Woman in the Room" as well. It's a collection of all of the "Masters of Darkness" trades into one volume. It's in absolutely beautiful condition as well, I've been after this book for awhile.

The Joe Brennan signature line looks so empty though! :wtf: I know it's like that on all the copies. Does anyone here know the story behind that?

Congrats on the Colorado Kids, those are ones I do not have yet. Something about buying three of the same book just feels wrong to me!

I googled Brennan earlier tonight wondering the same thing. He died Jan. 28, 1990. I assume this was around the time the book was being sent to press, and there wasn't time to leave his name out of the signature pages...or else they left his name in as a memorial.

Ric
04-14-2011, 09:01 PM
You know, I was going to suggest that, but I felt like it would be too morbid. That's very sad. In that case, the blank line does act as a nice memorial.

Thanks Ryan.

It's been that way for years, or at least had been before his accident. It's a matter of where King places the "dot" over the i that gives the appearance of the first loop being the 'n' rather than the 'i'. He also used to have a wider 'n' than he does in more recent signatures. Look at King's signatures from the 1980's and early 90's and you'll see this quite a lot.

Here's definitely my new PRIDE and joy. I work at AMD and was given this limited edition laptop as a reward for helping on the design of the Fusion chip it runs on.
I designed all layout for the clocking networks for the Bobcat (duel)core on the chip. This is the first chip in the new Fusion process which is really making a huge hit for AMD and placing them back in black.

I'm especially proud of that fact that out of the 11 macros (main sections) of the chip core, I solely designed the layout for all four clock macros.... and out of the 11 macros, the four clock macros were the only ones that passed all checks and worked on the first released test silicon.

this was a two year design project, and I'm so happy to see it doing so well already in the market since being released in Jan of this year. One of the best things about it, the chip allows for a battery life of 10-12 hours.

If any of you buy a computer with the new AMD Fusion chip... send it to me and I'll be happy to sign it for you.:P ha ha ha.

and here's the chip...
even after almost 14 years of doing this, I still find it amazing how many millions of detailed microscopic shapes and circuits are etched into that little silver square in the center.

just imagine a metal wire the thickness of a human hair...
now imagine a metal wire 1 micron (um) wide which is approximately 1/100 of a human hair.... or 0.000039 of an inch.
now imagine a wire .035 microns wide .... or, .000001365 of an inch.
that is how wide the the device gates are on this chip.

for comparison: a red blood cell is 8 microns - compared to .035 micron device gates.

the chip I'm working on now has even smaller gates... ain't technology amazing?

But ... there's a few things that irk me about this. 1) All the same color ink? It was said to have been signed at an event, so maybe they opened up a box of sharpies or something. 2) While the signatures follow specific examples that I have searched for exhaustively online (Matthew Fox's sharp M's, Jorge Garcia's childlike signature, etc), they all seem to look a little alike, so? and most importantly 3) Evangeline Lilly's signature. She signed it "Evangeline Lilly" on mine. I have searched literally hundreds of her signatures online, she has never signed like that before, never never never. Always "Elilly" And that is the main reason why my tiny brain thinks it's fake. Oh well, even if it is my friends won't know, it just sucks that I got screwed. :( I like it anyway, lol. Signed Bradbury book from Gauntlet Press. Letter BB

Dawn to Dusk: Cautionary Travels
Ray Bradbury
Published 2011

This new Ray Bradbury volume edited by Donn Albright, Dawn to Dusk – Cautionary Travels, is constructed around two unpublished and un-produced screenplays.

Dark Carnival (1955-59) was written with Gene Kelly in mind. It would later be reshaped into the novel Something Wicked this Way Comes (1962) This version is much darker. Catacombs is an integration of two of Ray’s stories, “The Next in Line” (Dark Carnival, 1947) and ”Interval in Sunlight” (Esquire, March 1954).

The unpublished short story “You Must Never Touch the Cage” serves as an interesting bridge between the two screenplays. It was originally planned for the 1955 edition of The October Country, but was omitted prior to publication.

The lettered edition contains facsimiles of fragments and Bradbury sketches the were done in preparation for The Illustrated Man, but never used.

The cover art is a painting by Joe Magnaini. This cover was Bradbury’s introduction to Magnaini’s art and the beginning of five decades of close collaboration and friendship.

Hmm...that's interesting for sure. Personally, I've never trusted those type of cast autograph "displays". It could be that they were at an event and were rushing to sign, but the signatures do look a little messy. However, the photo that you have looks to be Season 1-esque, so it's quite possible that the casts' signatures could've changed over time (you're right about Evangeline signing as "Elily"). I have about a dozen LOST cast autographs and a couple do resemble the style of the signatures on your print so if it is a fake, it's a fairly good one.

Do you remember what year you got this? It might help a little bit.

Regardless of its authenticity, it's a nice piece!

I have a copy of issue #3. I know of one other collector who has all three of the published issues, given to him by the publisher. I have never heard of any other copies in collectors hands. Keep in mind that this was an amateur publication done on a mimeograph set up and probably only 20 to 25 copies of each issue were done. Likely most were thrown away and few kept.

Edit: That would make the version in Stories of Suspense, the first full publication.

Correct. Published with title changed to "In a Half-World of Terror."

Hey, those are fantastic! I've always wanted a few of the early magazines but I know that if I get "some" then I will want to get them ALL and my goodness I can't even take one step in that direction right now. Better just to stay away and enjoy other people's magazine collecting!

Thank you! I made a list of 1st appearances (fiction) that I would like to obtain, plus some of the early excerpts like the 'SALEM'S LOT one. And I have a brief list of non-fiction publications that I am interested in. But so far I don't feel the urge to get them all.

I think I have posted these photos before. Here is the only issue of Comics Review that I have. Issue #3. I got King to sign it at the BAG OF BONES signing at Bett's Bookstore in 1998. It is a small fanzine, only 7 1/4" x 5 1/2". Cheaply made. Front cover, table of contents page, and first page of the installment of King's story for this issue.

I'm curious to the reference about King possibly contributing a story based on The Blob movie. Does anyone if that ever happened? I doubt it, otherwise we would have known a long time ago. But he might have considered it though, all these years ago.

Not really. Stu was standing by King and introducing people to him as they approached the table. I think I recall Stu asking King how long had it been since he had seen a Comics Review and King said something like "A long time" with the word "long" drawn out for emphasis.

Wow. There it is! I dug out my copy of The Illustrated Companion last night and they did a nice little repro job of it contained inside one of the tipped-in envelopes. They reproduced the same installment that you've posted. Any idea what the Stories of Suspense fanzine looked like? I believe that was the one edited by future comics pro Marv Wolfman...

I wonder if anyone has a copy of Dave's Rag?! Do any copies even exist? I've read there's only one copy of People, Places, and Things, and I don't think King is going to sell it.

EDIT: Just dug out the repro again. That's your copy they used for the book, isn't it? The King signature gave it away. I get the distinct feeling I'm out of my depth (again) but it's nice to talk with an expert!

I don't know, but I have a gut feeling that the Comics Review issues are out of my league (as are many other interesting items). How often do these come up for sale? Almost never, is my guess (and if one is available I'm pretty sure there are many collectors who can afford to outbid me).

Oh, I'm sure you're right. I was just being facetious, Michaël, but at least I may have contributed a little to the conversation here!

Yes, they photographed a number of things in my collection for the book. One of the guys responsible for the book flew down from Seattle and spent a day at my house photographing stuff. It was fun and they paid well.

Hah! That is cool. I like that. This reminds me of the Dutch word 'angstschreeuw' which is the only word I know in my language that has eight consonants in a row! Can anyone guess what it means?

harrison ryan
04-19-2011, 11:25 AM
Well, I know "angst" is fear from the bit of German I know. I cheated to find the full definition. Sounds like a word that may have occurred more than a few times in Dutch King translations!

biomieg
04-19-2011, 11:28 AM
True, although I suspect many Dutchies would say 'schreeuw van angst' instead of 'angstschreeuw' (the latter is somewhat more archaic).

So picked it up to get this, German Desperation/Regulators flip-over ARC:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/Desperation_Leseexemplar.jpg

The other books are From a Buick Eight, Dolores Claiborne, Night Shift, The Dark Half, The Shining, Four Past Midnight (Book 2), and Misery. With €4 shipping, grand total of €18 ($26.12) ... so I got the ARC for $3.27

This goes along nice with my German Talisman proof find; seems there are some good deals in those lots if you know what to look for ... and get lucky. Now all I have to do is learn German!

Well done indeed. Which leads me to a question about these that I've had for many years. I have been able to obtain 2 copies of Nebel, Both Slipcased Limited's, and both for under $100.00 each. (before shipping from Germany). To the best of my knowledge the story goes that when these were passing thru Customs, King (or a representative) put a halt on their entry and supposedly all but 50 to a 100 copies were Destroyed. No where have I ever heard that all 500 copies were in that shipment. And now with what I know to be 3 copies purchased (very cheaply) from Germany, I wonder how many may have never left there in the first place. Not so much a question as an observation. Probably never know.

What i know is, that arround 50-100 Nebel still exists. We in Germany collect all Edition Phantasia Book numbers, specialy the Nebel nr. and owners (we need your nr. when it´s ok for you? :-)
In the German Nebel Nr. List, we have at this time 35 books.
After the problem that King don´t accepted the contract between main publisher Heyne and Edition Phantasia, only the few pre-ordered books from US and German collectors are selled and shiped , all other
books get destroyed....:arg:

I passed on this book when it was announced, but one became available from a collector I know at a small mark-up, and after a lot of consideration, I pulled the trigger and bought it. That Riding The Bullet does look really good. As soon as Betts posted the new inventory, I originally jumped on the Riding The Bullet numbered, then as I was doing research for all the books I requested (seeing if they came with slipcases, who they were signed by, if they came with belly bands and cards, lol) I found out that King didn't sign the numbered edition. Yes that is an original sketch, I purchased it from Alan and donated it to the fundraiser last year or the year before I don't remember who won it.

First of all, my first new pride and joy is a copy of F&SF "Oracle and the Mountains", thanks to Cook who is 100% awesome in my book.

My second new P&J is my first ever S/L, not by Stephen King but by my other favorite author, Lawrence Block:

It turns out that there is a S/L of a Block book also signed by Stephen King ("The Sins of the Fathers") that LB's website i asking $750 for, which is insane.

My newest - the S/L Gunpowder, one of my favorite Joe Hill stories. 200 copies signed by both Joe Hill and Vincent Chong. I was very surprised that I was able to get this directly from PS Publishing, at retail no less. I know it wasn't there on the website the last time I looked, but it is now. The few copies I see on eBay are going for almost twice the price.

I think I'll ask you to find the books I need. Even if I paid a 10% finders fee I would be getting good deals.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9681/thehunti.jpgBought this book collection on eBay for $7. The thing I was really after is the black book in the top right, which is a first edition Wizard and Glass with no dust jacket. The thing that made my day is the fact that I have a fine, unfolded dust jacket with no book to put it on (until now) :) Even better, the book is in excellent shape.

Jill Bauman was nice enough to remarque my S/L copy of The Passage. I loved this book and asked if she could do something for me and she created a brilliant little sketch of Amy on the title page.

This is NOT mine. An email friend is a bit shy about posting on these boards, so she gave me permission to post some of her stuff here. She got this for $45! It's in perfect condition.
