Amazon Link (http://www.amazon.com/Sunpak-620-EBOX-Portable-Mini-Studio/dp/B000JC3NOY)

FYI, I purchased it for far less than the Amazon $66.86 price.
It's a great box, but still a challenge to fit over-sized books, and their traycase in .

Thanks for clarifying, Jerome.

I was looking at this one for $37.95 - http://www.amazon.com/CowboyStudio-Table-Photo-Studio-Light/dp/B001MYASTG/ref=pd_cp_p_0

It says the tent is 16" by 16", which I think should be big enough to hold most books. They look pretty similar.

Randall Flagg

Actually, mine is 20"x20" (and comes with two compacting lights, case, etc.), so beware that trying to get over sized books-and their accompanying slipcase/traycase in a 16"x16" box really will be a challenge. For a standard book, piece of cake.

I picked this up on eBay the other day on an impulse for a pretty modest price. 10.5" x 14" (not including the matting) pencil sketch of Jill Bauman's painting titled "Wheel Of Fortune" from the Easton Press edition of THE DEAD ZONE. I always liked this painting more so than the others she did for the book. I'm not sure what I will do with it. But I do like it quite a bit.

The wheel has stopped on the number "19." I never really noticed that before. Did King mention the number 19 with any significance in THE DEAD ZONE? It's been so long since I read it that I don't remember at all.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/baumanwheeloffortunesketch.jpg

It's true there was no significance established by the number 19 prior to the accident, but I believe 19 was the number the wheel of fortune kept landing on before Mr. Smith's accident and coma. I could be wrong. I can't recall any other 19s in the story.

I just received this UK first edition/first printing of DANSE MACABRE. The book itself appears unread and its only fault is a previous owner's name on the front endpaper. The DJ (with £8.95 price) has some damage along the edges and the top and bottom of the spine but all in all, I think this is a very nice copy. I was also happy with what I paid ($160 + shipping, which I think is a good price).

I just received this UK first edition/first printing of DANSE MACABRE.

I agree it is a good price. It is a pretty rare book since they put out the soft cover (trade paperback size) simultaneously with the hard cover edition and, I think, used the same pages or text block. It is one of those books that illustrates how little is known about publishing figures. I've heard anywhere from 100 to 1000 copies were done with most destined to go to libraries. I think people just make these numbers up sometimes to suit their purposes. Somebody says "Only 100 copies printed" and it gets repeated often enough and it becomes fact in most people's minds. However many were done it is still pretty uncommon in hardcover. Congratulations.

Disturbing news. I'm sure there is an explanation but still........

This is from the collector page:

Steve started this project by getting roughly 10 Miller remarques before it was suggested that he ought to try for a set comprising the 3 artists. He explored this and worked out agreements with all of them, and then commissioned 26 copies from each artist(so this made about 36 from Miller).
Ed forgot to letter his consignment, he just signed. So Steve is offering available images to customers, matching the Miller to the letter they wanted, and lettering them himself. So the ones listed as "available" won't be lettered until sold. Once 26 Millers have sold there will be 26 lettered, but not before.

So it sounds like he got Ed Miller (an alias for Les Edwards) to do little drawings in 36 books. But only 26 of those will ultimately have a letter assigned to them? The other 10 are just signed, no letter? Is that right?

Stockerlone
02-20-2011, 06:14 AM
In my case it was so: I asked Steve which ´set´ is still available (Potter+Chatbourne) with the same Letter.
When i found what i want, i can choice from all MILLERs that he have, this Miller becomes the same Letter as the Potter+Chatbourne. Steve LETTERED all Millers.
Think, when all 26 sets are gone, still 10 Millers are ´there´ unlettered, or maybe someone takes 2 diff. Millers with the same LETTER? But i´am sure, Steve have a list, which LETTERS are gone, which not...

Funny though, I noticed a while back that a different picture was showing as 'N' but the book wasn't marked 'N' at that stage..OOPS!! The one I have is the one shown on Tomas's site.

I shall immediately destroy the masquerading Miller and send the Potter and Chadbourne 'N's' on to you.

If any of you are familiar with the Band of Brothers series (and who isn't?), you'll know the names Wild Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron. They got together on this book, and it's a pretty good read if you're interested in military history. Told in their own words (most definitely their own words, especially Bill's), it follows their lives from before the war until now. Much of it is of course about their experiences in World War II, and if you've seen the movie you can picture the scenes they're describing pretty well. My favorite line in the whole book? "You're not going to stop a Nazi with a piece of fruit." Well said.

You can order the book online if interested, and if you order from the Wild Bill Guarnere website (www.wildbillguarnere.com) you can also get one personalized from Bill, which is what I did. The website is great as well, if you're into military history. Just out of curiousity, do we have any WWII vets here in the forums?

I just did a Band of Brothers marathon while in Cabo with my best friend last week. He said he has watched it like 10 times and he brought it so I could see it while on vacation.

I just bought a personalized copy for him.

Thanks for the heads up.

Truly an amazing mini-series and an even more amazing group of men that persevered through unimaginable tragedy and hardship.

George at C-Springs

I think if I went to Cabo, the last thing I'd be doing is watching 10 hours of movies! I watch the entire series every year in the two weeks leading up to the Bastogne Perimeter March, held every December; I've done the march the past 3 years. Each year there are 3 or 4 different routes to take, between 5 and 30 kilometers long. You go to all the different places where things happened, and each year they choose a different unit that was there as the focus. The woods there are exactly like they pictured it in the film, dead on, and there are still foxholes and berms and such to see. They also have re-enactors all along the routes; I'm talking entire platoons, all sorts of vehicles, aid stations, patrols, headquarters, machine gun pits, etc. The 2008 walk was the best, weather was in the teens with wind chills in the single digits, wind, heavy snow and ice, it was absolutely miserable ... just like it was back in WWII. I actually camped out in the Bois Jacques that year after the walk, right where everything happened, and let me tell you it was an experience. I hiked the woods at midnight, in a foot of snow, full moon, looking down on Foy ... spooky, and really made you think.

Your buddy will enjoy the book.

Great story, George. As you know, I used to live in Wageningen which is where on May 5th, 1945 the German general Blaskowitz surrendered to the Canadian general Charles Foulkes. This officially ended the Second World War in the Netherlands. To commemorate this, Wageningen hosts a big festival every 5th of May including a parade of veteran soldiers from the allied forces (the remaining veterans from both World Wars) and also Dutch veterans from other armed conflicts in which we participated after WWII. Lots of old army vehicles as well.

Always a nice event to watch and a great way to honour these brave men and women who fought for our freedom.

That might be a good idea, John. Something similar happened when my bookcase was delivered last year. The tracking info. said that it had been delvered, but it wasn't on my porch. I looked across the street and saw 2 long boxes and sure enough, it was my bookcase. The house it was delivered to has a similar house number to mine. I could only imagine how I looked "stealing" my package and running across the street with it.

So, I recently purchased "The Gunslinger" off of ebay. The listing title was "The Dark Tower (1982, Hardcover)". The picture was a stock photo of the third edition of the Gunslinger, but the text of the auction simply stated "Second Edition" with a condition of "Like New". Even with that ridiculously confusing description, I was happy to pay $53 for it, but I was disappointed when I got in the mail because, although it is a true second edition, it is incredibly far from "like new" (torn dust jacket formerly taped to insides of covers, writing on end papers, just generally dirty sense to it). I was angry and was arranging to send it back, but then I realized I loved having the book. Even it was gross, it was my gross second edition. Maybe I'll post pictures of my new baby later, but I'm afraid of being laughed at :(

For $53, that's a pretty good deal, even with the defects. I'm sure no-one here is going to be laughing at you.

Since you plan on keeping the book, maybe you could get back to the seller and see if he's willing to refund a bit of money to you too. Can't hurt to try!

How does that work exactly? I know that Grant sells DJs for older editions. Did they print up 25,000 Gunslinger DJs back in 1982, or do they have the ability to turn the presses back on at any time? I find it interesting that so much value is dedicated the the jacket when that is the easiest part to replace and/or fake.

Sorry, I know that Grant doesn't have 1st or 2nd edition dust jackets, but they do have 3rd Gunslinger DJs, and they also have 1st edition DJs for other books like "Drawing of the Three". If the jacket is really the majority of the value of older books, then why can it be replaced for only $10? Do collector's care whether the jacket is original?

Sir_Boomme
03-04-2011, 09:31 AM
I have extra unfolded jackets for many of my grant books (but not the gunslinger).
as far as I know, grant is a bit unique as a publisher in offering replacement jackets years after publication... while it is good in the respect that if yours get messed up you can replace it...
I'm guessing - it is probably a tad bad for the resale value of a book... ie. when one can by a cheaper "not-as-cared-for" copy and then a cheap replacement jacket... it makes selling a very cared for copy harder...which could result in lower prices across the board.

Rahfa
03-04-2011, 12:31 PM
I don't know about that....the number of any copies of any book with a "married" dustjacket as opposed to an original is so small as to be insignificant. I doubt it has any impact on value - what could affect value is having a near-mint d/j married to a book that's been through the ringer...I probably wouldn't be interested in that.

The book and dustjacket, I think most would agree, are not unique elements. If you have a beat up book, without a dustjacket - then you don't really have the book.

Plus, the book will obviously last forever (kind of), even beat up...but a dustjacket is harder to keep in good shape, so that's where the value is.

As for the DoTT example above, I think most owners of that book have kept both book and d/j intact and together...so there aren't people looking for them. A book like Carrie, on the other hand, was just a random horror book in 1974, so people didn't care about te d/j at all.

biomieg
03-04-2011, 12:37 PM
If the jacket is really the majority of the value of older books, then why can it be replaced for only $10?

Because you are thinking of the value of the book and DJ in terms of 'collecting'. The publisher thinks of the DJ in terms of production costs (I assume). Same as with proofs and ARCs - reviewers get them, read them, mangle them and throw them in the bin while collectors are prepared to pay premium prices for them.

CurtSeattle
03-04-2011, 08:29 PM
It would be sweet if I could get 3 or 4 1st/1st Gunslinger DJ's, but it would probably lower the value if they were that easy to get.

What we have here is a German Leseexemplar (ARC) of The Talisman. It may not look like much, but Frank tells me there's only 3 others known in Germany (and he has two of them)! Exterior condition obviously isn't that great; dirty, stained, bent, creased, you name it. But, except for page 17/18 which has two folds, and the red owner's stamp on the first page, the rest of the interior looks great.

Here's the best part; I found it on eBay last week, in a lot with four other German King books (Gunslinger, Waste Lands, Eyes of the Dragon, and Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon) ... for €14.99 BIN! Including free shipping and handling! I figured the seller either didn't know what he had or that it was just a reading copy missing a cover (Frank confirmed sometimes German sellers will use the term Leseexemplar to describe reading copies rather than ARCs). Either way, I figured I could't go wrong for the price ... and boy was I right! After missing the delivery guy yesterday (he never rang or knocked), I was anxious all day today. He finally just showed up around 5 o'clock, and man was I one happy camper when I opened that box! Maybe this is the beginning of a good luck streak :-)

This is a gooooood question... I´am the proud owner of two of the Talisman Leseexemplars.
The first one, i found was expensive... arround 75 euro, but i really want it, it was the last Germany ARC Leseexempar that was missing in my collection, and it was in very good condition.
The second Talisman Leseexempar was offered me last year, it was cheaper, because the cover was very poor. But as alternativ/ addition for the bad cover, i use (info for you George!) i use the cover from the Normal H+C Hartcover. The Leseexemplar is some millimeters smaller then the Normal HC, but it´s OK.

The REALISTIC PRICE ??? At this time only 4 books known...

I went to the premier of a documentary about Bernard Werber, a french author that have sold 25 millions copies in the world, in 37 languages... he's really popular in korea & russia.
Unfortunately only his 1st book was published in english : empire of the ants.

I got 2 things signed : a catalog of an exhibition he wrote, a korean book in which he is the "hero" : it's a graphic novel type thing.
I still do not understand how a publisher cannot try to translate his other books in english, knowing the success he have in some countries...

I did suggest to the director to english sub the documentary and send it to the american publisher. Maybe they'll do something when they'll see how popular he is...
Here is the traiiler to the documentary. I'll probably do some english subs for the trailer at some point

Yep i know that, but still. If an author sells millions copies and is extremely popular in some countries, why a publisher would not try publish another book than his first one? The US one was published over 10 years ago. Maybe 15... it's worth a try if you ask me.

Ari_Racing
03-14-2011, 12:37 PM
Again, it depends. In this case, the best would be to check how many copies sold in USA. If it's a low number, the publishers probably don't think it's worth it.

US Market isn't easy. I have a couple of friends who wrote books and got 'em published in Europe, in big publishers (for example, in Italy with Sperling), and their agents always say the same: If you manage to enter in the US market, you sell the book everywhere. But it doesn't mind if you sell a lot in Europe, because the book can be rejected very easily by the US Publisher.

Although the trailer was done months ago, before the documentary was finished. If you dont know the author the trailer MIGHT sounds a wee bit weird, but... please have a look at it, it only last 2 minutes.

Absolutely Beautiful !! (Randall Flagg's Collection)
I've been collecting just short of 20 years & I thought I had a pretty good collection, but .. this is staggering.
Well done, well.. ..it's never done.

P.S. this is my very 1st post to Palaver.

I've been waiting for just the right copy of a 1/1 The Stand. Something in my price range that didn't look horrible. I finally found one. The book looks amazing and the jacket is a solid 7 out of 10. Now if I only had one of those spiffy traycases to put it in...

That's awesome! Great catch! I have the Easton Press edition of this book.

I was able to meet Stan a few times and he's a great guy to chat with, very passionate about what he does and loves to tell stories about the old Marvel days with Kirby & Ditko.
