I would love to see those samplers. Why is it the UK publisher always have cooler promos than the Us ones?. The Cell charms, Lisey's bookmarks, Lisey's paperweights, etc.

Randall, I got mine for the asking price (plus free shipping). I hope to never having to sell it. It is trully a lot more beautiful in hand than any pictures I have seen on it. Thanks everyone, for the kind words.

Do you know further spoofs of King movies in MAD or other spoofs of King works/movies?

A small thing, but I won a signed IT (3rd edition) for just $81 last night on eBay. The book will make a great gift for someone some day.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200248536722

And since things are pretty slow in the Collector's area these days, I'm gonna hang a little teaser out in the wind...I am eagerly awaiting a newly listed book I purchased on ABE a week ago (not King). I bought it by description only. Some of the things that grabbed my attention:

It is an ARC
It is signed by the author
It is an association copy to a well-known Hollywood actress
It has an original sketch by the author
It cost me $100

I was hoping it would arrive by today, but you all will likely have to wait until next week for me to show some pictures. I have no idea what the inscription says or what the sketch looks like!

Interesting. I hope you get it soon. Some thoughts....Clive Barker often puts a sketch in the book if time permits. He has had several of his books/stories made into film and would probably know people in Hollywood pretty well.

Dan Simmons frequently draws something with his signature, but his connection to Hollywood is less obvious.

I'll be interested to know what you have bought.

Aside from a few ARCs by unknown authors I scored while working at Borders, I have never had anything "collectible" until our very own Turtlesong sent me a first edition first printing of Black House *woot* and a copy of Tommyknockers that I think I need her to re-tell me what is special about it. Anyway, these new possesions inspired me, and I saw a teeny used bookstore in a little town we had been passing through on the way home from kayaking and I found my first awesome used book find!

A first edition Regulators in really nice condition for only $7!! I was so proud of myself. And grateful for the over-the-phone coaching I got from Turtle to be sure I was holding what I thought I was holding. Just wanted to share!!

I suppose I've caught the collecting bug (thanks, T/song!) I just google searched a list of used book sotres and placed a bid on an interesting set of King first editions. Wish me luck on that! (No really, do, because I already have some of them, so I'll have some to give away!).

So here is the book I teased you all with late last week. It just arrived 10 minutes ago.

It is an ARC of Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker. It is inscribed to actress Whoopi Goldberg and Clive did an original sketch underneath the inscription.

Here it is:

Today was quite a haul for me, from www.signedpage.com:

Signed Small Favor by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files) and The Gypsy Morph by Terry Brooks personalized.

From http://www.mysteriestodiefor.com/ :

Signed Vampyres of Hollywood by Adrienne Barbeau, Signed The Face of Fear by John Saul, Signed Burn Notice: The Fix by Tod Goldberg and Personalized Leather Maiden by Joe Lansdale.

Plus I received a new Poppy Z Brite book with a drawing by Poppy (I now have 15 books with drawings by Poppy). Also I sent Poppy some books to sign (I had 10 books, of my approx. 70 Poppy books that were not signed) which She personalized and sent back. I now have several editions of Poppy's books that even She does not have a copy of :excited:

Cool stuff Oy!

I also just received The Gypsy Morph personalized yesterday, and started reading it last night. I also got one of the book club hardcovers of The Dark Wraith of Shannara signed (one of 5, whoo hoo)

btw, is the info on Poppy's site to send her books? How could I get Poppy to sign my books. I would love to do it, as I have a good collection of her work too.

And congrats to all on this page, there's some good stuff that people received!

Hey, that was a great purchase for that price. You certainly have some books that I don't own.

Congrats, Dave, John and David.

One question: Why did Whoopi get rid of her personalized, signed and doodled book? Sold it because she was short on pocket change? Thought it would be a good way to insult the author? Not enough space in her mansions to store it? Just wondering.

Probably because she gets such a ridiculous amount of free stuff from famous people she has nowhere to store it all. We should all have that problem.

Patrick-

In these cases, I always ask myself the same question, but there is rarely an answer that makes sense. Why, for instance, does Bob own the amazingly lovely inscribed Stand (I think it's The Stand) to King's daughter? Why would she give something like that up? There are other examples, but it all comes down to why would they do that?

Mr. Rabbit Trick
09-05-2008, 05:07 AM
Celebrities are bombarded with requests from 'charities' on a daily basis to give them a 'personal item' that they can auction. That's why so many personal items end up on the open market.

Ves'Ka Gan
09-05-2008, 06:16 AM
Let's not forget the fact that some people who work for these celebrities aren't the nicest most trustworthy people. I am sure that some of these things that end up on the open market come from angry former assistants, hair dressers, maids, etc. who picked it up and slipped it in their bag on their last day.

And Patrick, you're getting Whoopi and Oprah confused! :pirate:

I agree that I think they hit a charity first then the open market...if SK's daughter wanted every book personalized a hundred times, she could do it, so I bet she got that book specifically for a charity or some other function.

It makes more sense to me that a family member might give it away...to her, it's just words on a page, since she sees and talks to her father whenever she wants...an inscribed book to her is a dime-a-dozen.

Whoopi and Barker is a little weirder...who knows what the relationship was...it could have been an agent saying "send this book to Whoopi so she'll read this script." Who knows...

It is THE STAND that I have inscribed by King to Naomi. I've got a similar copy of 'SALEM'S LOT, also with a lengthy inscription to Naomi. According to the bookseller who bought these and had them in his collection for a few years, these were Naomi's personal copies. She gave them to a friend in need of money, knowing that they would be sold.

The book itself is fine, the jacket I'd say about VG due to the normal sunning to the spine and edges. All in all I'm happy with it, as I got it for $65 post paid!

I got very lucky, a seller on ebay didn't post pictures to the auction, but was willing to take some and email them to me when I inquired.

They don't come up often so I'm not sure what market value really is - similar copies to this on ABE are listed at $150 - $250+ but in today's market I'm willing to bet you can easily get a NF/VG copy for >$100.

Really excited about this one. I just got it back from the framer's today and it turned out better than I had hoped! It's my Jake & Oy print that I got in Ned Dameron's Wastelands portfolio. I took it to the framer's on the 24th of August and picked it up today. The photos don't show it well, but it is actually quite large in person. This is my first piece of SK artwork, so I am really glad that it turned out well. :excited:

You can't see the frame detail well in the photos, so I may do some close-up shots later on.

Here are some photos:

I'd strongly suggest you try to find a matching dust jacket for that GREAT find. Check ABE books for a damaged book with a good dust jacket. I did a quick search and, with dust jacket, prices are in the $100-400 range!

When Treachery and The Stand, Captain Trips came out I wanted to go to a midnight release but there were none within 100 miles. I really wanted to get the Midnight Release Variant for Treachery. Well the next best thing of course is ebay! I bid on two copies of The Midnight Variant and they were throwing in two copies of the regular copy. They came in the mail today with a few suprises as follows:

Long Road Home 1 of 5
Gunslinger Born Sketchbook
Marvel's Best Selling Authors (featuring Stephen King & The Dark Tower)
The Stand Sketchbook
The Long Road Home Bookmark
Treachery Postcard
Cool looking postcard of Anita Burke's The Laughing Corpse
Flyer from Jetpack Comics 2 year Anniversary Sale and Miidnight Release

So add in the two Midnight Variants and two Treachery 1 of 6 copies and I think its a nice little haul for $19.98.

The Midnight Variant is quite different - the front cover is a Wooden Door, Doorknob with Keyhole and what looks lke a rose behind the keyhole, Then the cover flips open (Left to right) to a double fold picture of a Rose on a green cloudy background. Pretty cool!

The two Midnight Variants also came with a cool COA - I know who cares about the COA - in this case it is not really necessary. Every magazine also came bagged and boarded and there was extra boarding in the mailer to ensure no damage. It was all perfect!

Hi everyone! I've been out of touch for a while now--the remenents of Hurricane Ike came through and wiped out my power for more than 15 hours. When the power finally came back on, it fried my dsl modem. I'm currently using a computer at the public library. Just letting everyone know that I'll be back for good as soon as a replacement modem shows up (two or three days, they said.)

Too bad about the modem. The same storm ran through Columbus John, so I understand were you're coming from. There are still areas without power here (the third day without). Luckily I'm not in one of those areas.

So I'll admit my igorance: What is the story on that portfolio?

I believe that it is similar to The Cycle of the Werewolf Portfolio (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=3721).

A collection of illustrations from the S/L version of the book, signed by both King and the illustrator, and numbered.

Tippy, why not list what you're looking for? Enquiring minds want to know!

Danse Macabre S/L
Cycle of the Werewolf S/L
The Plant S/L
The New Lietenant's Rap S/L
Letters From Hell S/L
Legends S/L
Cycle of the Werewolf Portfolio S/L
Dark Tower II Audio S/L
Rainy Season Print S/L
Cujo Guitar
My Pretty Pony S/L
UK Wizard & Glass S/L
UK Desperation/Regulators S/L Set
UK Rose Madder S/L
UK Bag of Bones S/L
UK Insomnia S/L
Fifty to One S/L
Six Stories S/L

I am fairly certain I will never own a Cujo Guitar, or a Lettered My Pretty Pony, but I have to put them on the list. Also, on principle alone I doubt I will buy a S/L Fifty to One...unless I find it for $500 or less one day (which is exactly how I came to own Dandelion Wine).

Fifty to One (http://www.subterraneanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ardai1&Category_Code=CAT&Product_Count=0) is a Hardcase Crime book, but it is not an anthology.

It is a novel that will be published by Subterannean Press.

It has NO MATERIAL BY STEPHEN KING IN IT.

It does however, have his signature, and the title of one of the chapters is THE COLORADO KID. It also has a $750 price tag.

Technically, the Cycle of the Werewolf and Insomnia Portfolios have no material by Stephen King either. But then again, I can buy BOTH of those for less than it would cost to buy Fifty to One.

My goal is to get every King S/L. However, I do not collect lettered editions unless that is the only S/L available. Example, I have the lettered editions of Dystopia and Great Ghost Stories only because there is no other limited edition signed by King available. I have the lettered edition of My Pretty Pony on my "wish list" for the same reason.

Back to the Insomnia portfolio....I got mine for $255 shipped, and one recently sold on ebay for $218.51 shipped (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&item=200252579701)....so that gives you a price range.

He bought it years ago and had just kept it stored away in its original shrinkwrap (slit open, but still intact). $51/400 and it's beautiful!

I read somewhere that the night lights were faulty and deemed a fire hazard and had to be pulled from the shelves. They were then repacked with the DT booklet.

It was when this package sold out (I think I read somewhere there were 200,000 of them) that the stores started giving out the advance booklet with the first two chapters of Dark Tower IV to people who bought both books.

John

I read somewhere that the night lights were faulty and deemed a fire hazard and had to be pulled from the shelves. They were then repacked with the DT booklet.

I've never heard that before. I know that the manager of the Waldenbooks, where I got the initial package, got the booklets after the lights had sold out. Because he was a friend, he gave me a few of the booklets. As far as I know, the booklets were always separate.

A lot of people complained about getting the lights when all of a suudden the booklet came out and many bookstores wouldn't give them a booklet unless they bought the books again! My bookstore just gave me one when I asked!

I recall King posting somewhere - his site? not sure? about people griping and that they needed to get over it - somethhting like that????

Here is King's post regarding the night lights and wizard & glass booklets:

I got both like John because I had friends at the local Waldenbooks at the time.

Thanks for that link, Brice. Interesting stuff.

I got nuthin' at Waldenbooks. I got mine the old-fashioned way - from another Collector!

The little books (W&G excerpt along with Umney's Last Case) I got the other old-fashioned way - I bought 'em on eBay!

very nice you guys. very nice indeed.

i have acquired a new first/first of both the stand: complete and uncut and IT. a really great seller on ebay, if you are interested you can pm me for his name. i had to replace IT because the binding fell apart on mine. that seems to happen to a lot of books from that era. no one answered my question in the IT thread - when the book falls apart, does whatever is inside escape? :scared: i replaced the stand because it's binding was starting to fall apart as well. i'm pleased with both finds. :)

also acquired a first/third of the bachman books for a friend. nothing special but the seller shipped it in a fucking bubble envelope. i don't know what damage was from shipping and what was actually there from the listing. when i emailed him about it he said he has gotten kudos for using that instead of boxes. he was very rude and blunt about it. prick. for only the second time ever (i think) i left neutral feedback on ebay.

Congratulations Eric and Daghain on your newest acquisitions! I had been looking for a long time for my s/l Firestarter so I know how excited you have to be! The remarque (the eye) on the trade DTVII is great! I don't have one of those--all I have is the one with the Ka symbol. Again, congratulations to both!

Eric, congrats on your Firestarter S/L. That's one I'd love to get.

turtlesong, the person that sold you the Bachman books is full of crap. NOBODY prefers a bubble envelope over a box when shipping collectible books. Congrats on your 1sts of IT and The Stand.

Daghain, I'm tempted to squee but that would be undignified.

Kudos to Wiz!

You say undignified like it's a bad thing.

Padded envelopes are the bane of my existence.

Here is my ABOUT ME (http://cgi3.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=tippy4) page on ebay.

I put the following note into every MESSAGE TO SELLER when sending over a Paypal payment:

Please ship in a sturdy cardboard box with at least 2" of packing material between book and box on all six sides. Please pack snugly. Please DO NOT ship in a padded envelope. Feedback will be left upon receipt.
