Codex did indeed start off pretty well...but I totally disliked the ending. Tried listening to China Melville's RAILSEA. Had to stop 50 minutes into it. I'll give it another try later this week. Deciding to read something from Michael Koryta. I read THE PROPHET which was an awesome book. For those of you that don't know CD ended up making a signed/limited of this book, which I am still waiting for.

Question for anyone that watches the Game of Thrones television show and also reads the books. Didn't want to even step foot inside the specific threads lest I get spoiled. Anyway, I'm enjoying the first book, but at the same time, nothing is happening that I haven't already seen in the show. My question is ... can I just skip to the current television season's book and still be fine?

Bears: while I can offer no insight to your question, say sorry, you should take some solace in the fact there is hope for me coming around to liking WotC. DotT did not hit me nearly as hard (still loved it tho), and WL is rocking my world right now. It's easily my favorite of the first three books this cycle. Turns out my taste buds have changed in the past decade or so haha. I hope MM reverts back to a form that is pleasing to you.

What's wrong with present tense?Everything. It is not a way to tell a story. It sounds unnatural and can only be good for some, I don't know, flashbacks or other inserted pieces - and even then reads like it's an assignment of a Creative Writing student. The only exception so far is Black House - which would be a million times better if it was told in the past tense, but is good enough even as it is, although I have to struggle through all those -s at the end of words instead of -ed.

As good as Game of Thrones is-I happen to think it's a very well-crafted TV series but am not as enamored of it as most people-it pales in comparison to the books in A Song of Ice and Fire. As frustrating as certain aspects of the novels can be, the television adaptation has nothing on it. Nothing.

Ok, so I'm a HUGE fan of golden-age sci-fi, especially the short stories. Stuff from the late '30s to about the mid '50s or so. I've expanded to some stuff after that--Ellison can be good; some others. And I've read some post-golden age stuff that is great. Typically from authors who started way back when, but some of the newer folks have things I've enjoyed.

So I pick a book off my shelf--The Science Fiction Hall of Fame (Nebula Winners 1965-1969). A little later than my preferred time period, but, hey, Nebula winners must be cream of the crop, right?

I start in on the stories and novellas--some really good science fiction here! Ellison, Zelazny, Aldiss. Leiber, an old favorite. A very intriguing story by Michael Moorcock, who I had never heard of before.

And then I get to the next story in the book: Dragonrider, by Anne McCaffrey. Dragonriders??? Sounds fishy. More like fantasy. Sure enough, the story starts off with R'gul talking to Weyrleader F'lar and K'net (leader of the Igen patrol) about some magical Eye Rock or Star Stone or some other ridiculous thing. And riding dragons around. Not just dragons, but telepathic dragons. And it's horrible! And unintersting. And stupid beyond words. Just about any given paragraph could win the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.

Oh god, please make it stop. How many more pages of this story are there? (I'm afraid to look, and too OCD about my reading to bail out on the story). How fantasy dreck like this not only makes a sci-fi anthology, but wins an award is beyond me. Perhaps this was the book that transitioned real sci-fi into fantasy. I mean, go to any bookstore's "sci-fi" section and 90% of what you see now seems to be dragons and Valkyries and wizards and magic elves and whatnot. Can I blame Anne McCaffrey? Please?

I checked wikipedia to see what they had to say about Dragonrider and it turns out there is like 28 novels in a series! 28 novels about dragon riding and Threads and T'Fag or P'Nuts or whatever? I think that must portend the end of western civilization as we know it.

Sorry for the rant, but I had to vent.

Hi, guys. I live in Connecticut and have a place near me called The Book Barn. It's basically a series of houses or barns that sell used books. I've always wanted to go there and tomorrow I finally will.

What I'm asking from you guys is to give me some recommendations for some books to look for. I'm always looking for new stuff that I'm unfamiliar with.

My taste is pretty wide ranging. Of course, I have every King book. I love the Ice and Fire series, Harry Potter, Hunger Games. I also love mysteries like many of Harlan Coben novels. I really enjoy Crichton and Elmore Leonard. I already own most of the classics, or my mom has the ones I don't own.

So give me some suggestions of anything you guys have read recently (or ever) that you think I might like. Thanks.

BTW, if you're ever in CT, stop by. http://www.bookbarnniantic.com/

Mystery, thriller, suspense I highly recommend Michael Koryta. Dan Simmons is good for horror, historical fiction, sci-fi. Robert McCammon has some great books. F. Paul Wilson writes some good medical thrillers. Dust trilogy from Hugh Howey is fantastic. I am a huge fan of Richard Matheson; he writes over several genres including horror, sci-fi, romance, thriller, western, general fiction. There are so many more I could list. I didn't list a bunch of horror writers because it didn't sound like that is necessarily your preference.

Thanks for all the help guys. I was in book heaven. That place is amazing. There are literally books everywhere. There are even 3 other stores a few minutes down the road with books as well.

I found quite a few things I was looking for.

I did in fact find Wool in paperback. Even though I've already read the digital version, I really wanted it in paper form. I bought Those Who Wish Me Dead by Michael Kortya. At first I found this book for 7 bucks at the front because it was newer, but then my mom found it for 4 later. Not too bad. I also found the last Harlan Coben book I needed from his Myron Bolitar series called Backspin. I've been looking for that one for a little while.

I also picked up a two Michael Crichton books that I didn't have: Micro and State of Fear. I also bought Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan. I had heard some good things about that one.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions. I can't wait to go back again!

I am loving this series. It is hard to explain without giving away too much detail, but it is future based and historical. It follows the Trojan war and contains space travel, Greek gods, time travel. It is very well written.

I read the Hyperion series several months ago and it is also quite good. I don't typically read a lot of sci-fi so I don't know how this compares to other books, but I would recommend both series.

Just finished book 5 of A Song of Fire and Ice. Still unsure how I feel about it. I liked the millions of plots and subplots but some of the stuff was just padding and certain character's stories went nowhere.

Reading The Beautiful Thing that Awaits Us All by Laird Barron on a story a day basis. This man can write. I haven't seen anyone receive such universally excellent praise in a long time. Still reading that Haldeman book and I'm 1/10 into Robocalypse. I thought this would be just some cornball s.f. but it's pretty gruesome. It's somewhere between Terminator and something Clarke and Heinlein would write.

It helps a lot if you've read him before so you know what you're getting into and it also helps if you've been really,REALLY stoned before, I can't recall a leading character who smokes as much weed as Doc in Inherent Vice which is very noirish and funny too, a real departure for Pynchon but you know it's one of his books from page 1

Dreamcatcher.

I saw the movie years back, and I remember laughing at Morgan Freeman's eyebrows through the entire thing - I couldn't even focus on the story due to his fucking eyebrows. http://www.blogcdn.com/blog.moviefone.com/media/2009/10/7-morgan-freeman.jpg
I was so disappointed with the movie, and I remember thinking: "It's probably a hell of a book though."
I'm glad the details of the movie didn't stick with me, because I'm really enjoying the book now. :D

Loved this book. Also I thought it was pretty cool that it takes place at Quabbin, as I live fairly close to it.

Well, I think I'll keep reading it anyway. :P

That's pretty cool, Heather.
I am really really enjoying it so far. Luckily, it's one of those super long books, too. So I get to spend a lot of time with it.

Halfway through, and I'm fucking loving it. It's exactly the kind of story that I love. Surprisingly, there's a number of really great science fiction ideas in there, as it explores a parallel world and how one key difference has affected the history of that world, for better and for worse. More importantly, of course, it's got a fucking alcoholic, chain-smoking, mega-swearing, ninja-Nazi ass-kicking monkey as the lead character, so obviously, it's also a lot of fun. And that's the main thing I've been loving about this story: it's nice to see a science fiction story that doesn't take itself too seriously and the writer just aims to tell a really good story involving parallel universes, conspiracies, princes and monkeys, and has some great ideas while avoiding the trap of trying to tell the reader how incredibly important the story is.

Just finished John R. Little - The Memory Tree.
Reading:

Herbert - Children of Dune (nearly half done, much better than Dune Messiah)
Koontz - Lightning (almost finished, standard Koontz story with quirky and unrealistic dialogue, a damsel in distress headstrong enough to overcome those obstacles but still in need of a White Knight. No dog... yet.)
Alejandro Jodorowsky - Metabarons

Guys, I really want to read a good scary book, but need some suggestions.
Anybody got any ideas for me?

And by scary, I don't mean disturbing. I mean classic kind of scary; monsters, ghouls, ghosts. Not backwoods redneck gets a chainsaw and hacks people up kind of scary.

How about zombies? Handling the Undead is one of my favorite books. It's got some scares to it, but handles the subject matter of the dead coming back to life in a very human way. It's a great book to read around Halloween...and would fit in with your costume!

Also, I'm reading The Demonologist right now and it's really good. I'm only 100 pages in, but I'd recommend it. It's about the career of Ed and Lorraine Warren. If you want ghosts, this is the book to read. It's really interesting because it's got actual dialogue from cases they've worked and tells you all the whos, whats, and whys about human and inhuman spirit activity. I've been reading it before I go to bed.

A little dated since it was written in 2009, but it acknowledged how fast things become outdated in the world of social media, and still had some fascinating insights into the future (I particularly liked the idea of paid product placement in e-books). Born to Fear, Interviews With Thomas Ligotti

This is a really interesting read. Suggested reading for both writers and fans of horror. I'm not a fan of non-fiction in general (don't even buy the magazines with King's interviews) but Born to Fear works because Ligotti is such a an enigmatic and charismatic person. I'm fashionably late to all-things Ligotti but I find it super interesting that it was rumored he was a joint pen name of several writers, that he wins all these awards but never shows up to collect etc. It's basically the opposite of what a lot of writers I used to idolize are doing now on Twitter every day. I can dig a little mystique.

Yes.
I didn't get around to reading it until a few years ago, and I'm so glad. Had I read it when I was younger, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it. For me, reading it was one of those rare cases where I actually grasped and fell in love with a classic. Great great book. :)
