The Stormcaller by Tom Lloyd, book 1 in his five-part series, The Twilight Reign. If you like Moorcock's Elric stories and epics in the vein of The Wheel of Time, I suggest this series. It deals with a warlord's ambition to ascend to Godhood even as a "shade" begins to turn the people of the Land against the Gods.

Its a fairly dark series, especially scenes where priests to the Gods are dragged before audiences and bloodily murdered or bound to the pillars of their Gods' temples by their own intestines and stoned to death. Also has a bit of a sword-n-sorcery feel, as the Land is populated by humans, elves, minotaurs, trolls, centaurs, wyverns and a few dragons here and there. Not too many of those about.

I did try to read A Game of Thrones, but I can't hear the characters talking for all the dice rolling. :lol1:

I am reading Gardens of the Moon, book one of Malazan Book of the Fallen. I can't quite decide how I feel about it yet.

I got to book 3 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, but I finally gave up on it. It's so fucken confusing. There's too much going on, and a bunch of the characters have very similar names. I liked some of it, but all in all I didn't think it was worth finishing the series.

Starting Under Heaven today, by Guy Gavriel Kay.

I was having that same problem and put it down for now in favor of Old Man's War by John Scalzi. I will probably try to get back to it later.

I had trouble getting into Pride and Prejudice, I just don't think it was the book for me to read right now. I'll pick it up again one day when it is the right book and enjoy it. So I started reading The Human Factor which has been pretty interesting thus far, all about British Intelligence, be interesing to see what directions it goes. I've been wanting to read Graham Greene since Alex Garland (who is very good) seemed to be compared to a lot.

He has two more books planned in the series Book 6 - The Winds of Winter and Book 7 - A Dream of Spring. According to him on his blog, it will be wrapped up then as he's already written outlines, knows the ending and has written many chapters in those books already.

thank god, i hate lack of closure! Considering I burned thru books 2-5, I am doing a re-read which is a nice dovetail into the HBO series, as I am currently on the first Tyrion chapter of Storm of Swords. Wow, I get SO MUCH more from the 2nd reading. I guess I get so obsessed with seeing how it turns out, the details are a blur the 1st read thru.

I was kind of surprised how long it took Winter to actually come, as those Starks were so compulsively reminding us it was coming...

I had a feeling book three would be the weakest link. After finishing the second book, I couldn't ward off the sensation that the author only had one good idea that she tried to stretch over the course of two - three books. In all honesty, a lot of the stuff that takes place outside of the arenas bores me; very bland characterizations.

I'll read the third book because I too have a thing about not finishing sagas, but I'm highly skeptical at this point.

Yes and no. Yes, it takes place in a world with dragons and sorcerers and magic and shape shifters etc., etc. but the emphasis is not on the world but on it's vast array of characters. It's intensenly character driven, and when the supernatural elements arise they are in service to the story and it's characters, not the other way around.

I ditched all my plans of reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Hunger Games, and an ASoIaF re-read and started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone today for the first time in years. I am actually surprised at how emotional I'm getting while reading. I suppose it makes sense because of how young I was when I read them, and how they basically were the gateway into the world of reading for me, but it still is surprising me. I actually cried (briefly, like a single tear) when I read the part where Hagrid buys Hedwig for Harry as his first ever real birthday present. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I'm enjoying 'The Wind Through the Keyhole'.
I've been having a tough time with King recently... I've struggled through almost everything he's written since 'Cell' and completely gave up after two attempts at '11.22.63'.
'The Wind Through the Keyhole' is so readable and enjoyable though. Should finish it tomorrow :)

To be quite frank I have little to no intention of reading 11/22/63. I too have been having a lot of trouble getting into anything King post-Cell and the only reason I was looking forward to WTTK is because it's a Dark Tower novel.

Cell and 11/22/63 aren't even close. It's more traditional King than The Wind is.

Anyways.. reading Robert McCammon - Swan Song and Stephen King - Duma Key. That's one of the few remaining I need to read.

I am finishing up The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson now, then I have Tricked by Kevin Hearne, Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed and Echoes of Betrayal by Elizabeth Moon all waiting in the wings and taking prescedent over a story within a story release by King for some reason.

I stopped buying King books after the final volume of The Dark Tower-The Wind Through The Keyhole is the first one I've purchased since then-and have only read a few, e.g. Duma Key, Rise Before Sunset, etc... Not impressed by any of them. So far I'm enjoying the prequel to Wizard & Glass though.

I just got to the Tim Southeart portion last night, only about one or two pages in.

I'm loving Roland's story so far, to be honest. Perhaps I'm being a bit biased, but I'm fascinated with anything Roland pre-Gunslinger. It's great being able to read his thought processes and his doubts through his own perspective, knowing the man he'll eventually become. Lurve it.

I'll give my full assessment once I'm finished. Do we have a thread dedicated to WTTK discussion?

I've read quite a few of his. The Collection is great and one of the stories (The Washingtonians) was the basis for the Masters Of horror ep. of the same name. Highly enjoyable collection. My favorite so far is The Store though. The Store itself is a rather obvious twisted version of Wal-Mart and since I work for Sam's I took particular pleasure in it. I love CDs books. I don't really know why I've still never bought from them (though I own quite a few). I guess now it's just a matter of the right book at the right time (financially).

Finished Catching Fire last night and loved it! I thought it was on-par with The Hunger Games, if not better. Really looking forward to getting Mockingjay now.

It was decent enough, but it felt like too much of a rehash of book 1 for my liking.

Just finished The Talisman and am about to start Black House. I have to say I liked The Talisman alot more than i thought I would because I though the very beginning was very slow and kind of dull to me but it got alot better as the story went on. I am very much looking forward to Black House.

How far into the story till you got into it? I got a little over 100 pages and stopped cause I couldn't take it.

GTFO.

Sadly no. There's many other books out there that I'm sure I'll enjoy more before I attempt another read of that one. Maybe some day, in the far distant future. 100 pages is alot more than I usually give a book I don't like

And not to break your heart, but I picked up Black House awhile ago. Read the first chapter and put it down :( Let's blame it on my reader's block... Will try again at some point.

I loved Talisman and Black House. I have really liked every King book I've read so far. That being said, I'm a huge Cardinals fan so I don't think I can read Faithful. But if that is the last book left to complete my reading of King, I might at least peruse through it.

I just finished Rusting Chickens by Gene O'Neil and The Mailman by Bentley Little. Both highly recommended. Currently reading Duma Key and Space Odyssey 2010. It's as good as the first one.

That picture of Mila is finger licking good.

I just love Bentley Little and I've yet to read that one.

I read one Bentley Little and it's scared me away from ever reading another one of his books again

That is what he's supposed to do dear. Come on! I'll read you a nice bedtime story. :couple:

I agree about BH > Talisman. Not sure how many times. I like The Talisman a lot too, it's just BH was a lot more concise and the writting was a lot stronger.

As far as the Bentley comment - I'd say no higher praise could be given to a horror writter.

Well maybe I used the wrong word, I didn't mean scared as in it terrified me to read it. As you all know I love a good scary book. And the scarier the better. What I meant was I was horrified and disgusted (and not in a good way ) by what I read, that I have no desire to pick up another book by him. I read The University, has anyone here read it? Maybe his other books are alot better than this one? I'll take suggestions, just as long as its nothing like that one.

And I will attempt Black House again soon :)

I think I am one of the few people that prefer Talisman over Blackhouse. I loved the writing, the setting and of course Wolf.

Blackhouse seemed staple King to me, which i did love dont get me wrong, but if I was to choose just one book that i was to read over and over it would be Talisman over Blackhouse.

Heather, since I really don't see Little's stuff as that extreme ( I read a lot of stuff that definitely is)I don't really know what to say. Pick up The Collection; it's all short stories so you can read in small doses and you're bound to find stuff you like. I don't really recall anything in The University that was that bad, but it's been years since I've read it.
Maybe I've forgotten. I may need to read it again. Can I ask specifically what bothered you in it?

I have grown to like The Talisman and Black House about equally, but in different ways. Initially I wasn't overly thrilled with Black House ( I still liked it) because it's so much different from Talisman which was one I loved since it first came out...or round about then.

I'm hoping to finish The Composers: A Hystery of Music by Kevin Reeves today. Awesome book with hysterical historical facts on classic composers. It's been a great background read for me while I've been extra busy the past few weeks, but I'm tired of reading bits of information slowly and ready to move on.

So, I'll read a few children's books quickly... Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories by Audrey Penn, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems, The Case of the School Ghost by Dori Hillestad Butler. Maybe I'll start Pirates: The Ring of Hope by Daryl K. Cobb. I might even write out some reviews for a few others I've read and have been procrastinating...

But I'm not sure what grown-up book to start next. Perhaps I'll knock out the new King graphic novels I got?

Gahhh, It feels like the longest book in my life!

(waiting to read WTTK)!:excited:

How is it?

Jerusalem?

I started reading because I wanted to know what all the troubles were about...

...boy, do I know now!

In the strongest possible terms, as an atheist, I find it all so terribly sad that people will fight so long and hard over a piece of land that holds significance to them solely because of what they have learned through their holy books. Of course, anybody who is religious will tell me different, but to me it just doesn't make any sense.

Family is the most important thing a human can have, or experiences within life/nature etc.

I really don't mean to get all high and mighty but when more people are bothered with the Facebook stock price or what car they drive, then you really have to question the system we live in?!

Has anybody heard of Derrick Jenson?
I don't agree with everything he says but I do believe that the human population does need to take a good long look at itself.

I apologise if this is slightly too serious but I have had an awful lot to drink tonight!
