My grandson graduated high school yesterday. For his graduation present, my wife is taking him and his mother (our daughter) to Italy next week.

I had posted this before, but it quickly got pushed off the page and I'm not sure if anybody really saw it...

It is a piece I wrote for The Daily Beast about the Summer of 1999, which I argue is the last great summer of our lifetime, before it all went to shit.

Last night, I noticed that there was water pouring out of a neighbors yard.

This morning, the water was still running, and I could see through their fence that a pipe had burst.

I tried to knock on their door...no answer. I knocked on their next door neighbors door...no answer.

I called the city, and they are going to send someone out...but hours went by and nothing.

I just shut off their water main....did I do the right thing?

Thanks Cook. One of my neighbors believes the owners moved out of state, and were renting the place, but it looks like nobody lives there.

I am worried that the the landscaping is now all going to die if someone does not come home in the next week.
