Reading this description of a copy of the FIRESTARTER signed/numbered edition makes me want to buy it soooo much Too bad their books are not cheap!

It is an immaculately clean copy in spotless blue boards, a rock solid spine as firm as a constipated Glaswegian alcoholic's rectal passage during HAPPY HOUR in an "All you can drink for 50 pence, but bring your own bucket" pub, marbled endpapers and a sublime dustjacket featuring Michael Whelan's stunning cover art. It is a magnificent copy with immaculate boards, a spine other spines glower at in envy, pages so clean that the village virgin would sell her soul to Satan to emulate their unsoiled state and a dustjacket that is a magnificent, aesthetic wonder to behold.

I just finished A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. What to read next? It's definitely time for a change of pace and I don't want to immerse myself in another 1000-page book right now. I have the following paperbacks to choose from:

Adam Nevill - Last Days, Apartment 16
Daniel Hecht - The Babel Effect
Clive Barker - In The Flesh
James Herbert - The Dark, The Fog, The Survivor
William Peter Blatty - The Exorcist
    Ira Levin - Rosemary's Baby

    Whaddayathink?

I still need to read that one. Well, anything by him really.

I'd have picked Barker from that list but that's just because I loved Cabal and The Hellbound Heart.

    Ari -

In the six years after our son was born in 2003, my wife miscarried twice. Both were within the first three months and both were identified during initial tests. It was utterly devastating sitting there waiting to hear the heartbeat for the first time, and knowing within seconds that there was something wrong ... and having the look on the doctor's face (before she had the presence of mind to hide it) confirm it. There is no preparing for that.

After the second time, we both went and did every test possible to see if something was wrong with either of us ... there wasn't. Aside from us being older parents (my wife was 40 at the time, I was 41), we were perfectly normal. As they told us, nature knows when things aren't right and does what needs to be done ... that's the way the body is supposed to work. That doesn't make it any easier on you, but it is true ... and knowing there was nothing pysically wrong with us gave us the confidence to try again.

After the third try, our daughter was born in 2010. My wife was 42, I was 43. It was an absolutely normal pregnancy and she is perfectly healthy (with a penchant for climbing, swinging, throwing things, and coloring on furniture). We can't imagine what our life would be like if we hadn't tried again.

Ari, I hope everything is okay, but if there are complications do not give up hope. Being there for her and being strong will be the most important thing now.
