This may be the most boring day of my life... I'm substituting as a high school secretary. In the summer. While the rest of the staff is out. So, I am seriously sitting at this desk in an empty building on the off chance the phone might ring.

Wow! That sounds like a great day to get caught up on some reading.

Damn, that's gotta suck! Have you brought a book to read, at least?

You know what's funny? If that had been my first day at work a couple of years back, I would've been ok with it. I'm fucking terrible at phones. Instead, what did I get? The exact opposite. Seriously, I was covering for the receptionist who was on holiday, and it was non-stop hell - at the care agency I worked at, most of the staff were sick, so there were a lot of angry clients or relatives of clients asking where their scheduled carer was. We couldn't find out what they wanted then, we'd say we'd ring back in 5 minutes, put the phone down, then another angry caller would ring. That's what my first day was like. For a guy who had zero phone experience, not really ideal, I must say. On the plus side, it probably really helped me secure the job, long-term wise, I think, as they knew I could work under pressure and come back the next day, instead of being a lazy shit.

I don't know how you didn't quit the first day, James! I've been working at my job for over a month now, and have only answered the phone once. In that short phone call (just a few days ago) I fumbled over almost all my words, completely forgot the 3 things I was supposed to ask, had to ask them to spell their name twice (couldn't hear because of a barking dog) and just gave up and told them my boss would call them back when she was available. I hate talking on the phone...

Believe me Pond, it does get better and you do get a better ear for it. I'm still not 100% comfortable with talking on the phones, especially if I'm asked about something I have no clue about (which happens more often than I'd like), but I've received and even made calls today, and I've definitely improved at it. But yeah, like I said, when you don't have that experience, it is god-awful those first couple of (dozen) times. You talking to someone, and you can't see them, which means paying even more attention to their voice on a lower sound quality than face to face. Yep, a huge nightmare.

As for why I didn't quit that first day? Favor to mum. After being unemployed a few years and still living at home with the folks, going through a day of hell was the least I owed her, imo. Maybe not a whole week (fortunatly, it wasn't that bad), but a couple of days, certainly.

I'm reading, yes... but I should have brought a different book. This one, for some reason, is going slow. lol

Doc, I should be glad it's boring. I've had my share of hectic days here and am glad there are no angry parents to deal with now! In all honesty, I feel the place is a bit "haunted" with the quiet and stillness... and since the desk across from me was my aunt's before she passed away suddenly earlier this year, it's extra eerie for me.

As for the phone etiquette, it definitely gets better. While I was finishing my Masters, I worked at a casino. I welcomed all the bus groups with a nice little speech on most days and found that seeing my "audience" made it easy. Plus, it was repetition so after a while I could greet the bus on auto-pilot. I was quickly given extra work in the business office because of my public speaking skills, but I didn't have experience with calls... and it was my job to solicit new groups to visit the casino. I was calling people who didn't speak English, who were over 80 years old, who had no idea where I was calling from, who had just lost their life savings at my place of work, etc. Not only did I not know what I was talking about, I also had to deal with all sorts of nasty name calling. I had to stick it out, though, because I needed the money and the insurance from the job. After about two to three weeks, I finally got the hang of it. I even figured out how to turn conversations around so those people calling me a "thieving bitch" ended up booking return trips to the casino and requesting me as their greeter. I think a big step in any job is taking that deep breath and saying, "I can do this." Become one with the phone.

On the up side, I used part of today to polish my resume. Hopefully I'll get a part-time sub position as an English teacher for the start of next school year.

    Wow, that looks awesome!

No amount of phone calls or responsibility is gonna' result in me being good on the phone. My strategy is just to keep telling people I can't hear them until they hang up.

Laughing at the "I have to have sales/skills ability" thing. I kill at it and yes I do sales. My friends and strangers I meet are shocked that I am so good at sales. They see me as a "life of the party" type guy but peeps I don't know off the job rarely hear me speak...reason being is I speak all day for a living. Be honest when you speak and life is good. Listen to the "oldies", most times they will put you to sleep but they do have "hidden" knowledge, even when they do not realize it

Just viewed "Rock of Ages". Corny, predictable, maudlin, and an absolute joy! Tom Cruise's performance may be the best of his career-simply a tour de force. He went far out on a ledge. I just love Rock and Roll, in 1987 I was 27 years old so the songs resonate with me, and they took them in new and wonderful directions. I give it 5 beers on the Six Pack Rating system.
