Yeah I saw that, but even the dark side is part of the force and the promo mentioned the spawning of the dark side. Yeah, that will indeed be an interesting series

EDIT: The more I delve into these pod casts and online SW info the more I have begun to wonder, exactly what is considered "Canon" and what isn't for all these new shows? I mean I have always been a HUGE fan of the films, but never really delved into anything else. I understand that at some point I have to buckle down and watch at least two animated series, (Clone Wars & Rebels) but after those what else? They seem to be referring to comics, novels and all kinds of ancilliary material. Lucas, approved the stories in all these things?

    HELP!!!!

You absolutely should at the very least watch all of Clone Wars and Rebels. I posted it here in the past but here is the correct order to watch Clone Wars: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/co...al_order_with/ Then follow this up with Rebels Short and the Rebels series.

These are the two main canon animated series. There is also Resistance and Forces of Destiny, but you can probably skip those. Clone Wars and Rebels are pretty much essential.

Technically, all Star Wars media released by Disney and Lucasfilm is canon. This includes all the novels and comics, too, of which there is a great deal. Yes, they're all official and part of the canon. Canon simply means everything that happens in the actual SW films as well as these TV series, and the books, it all takes place in the same timeline. Even the recent video games and the Galaxy's Edge theme park are canon.

It’s worth noting that none of the Books, Comics , or source material prior to the Disney acquisition is considered Canon, except for the movies and TV series themselves. That material has been relegated to the “legends” Star Wars universe, which is no longer canon.

So, weirdly,, the novelizations of Episodes 1 to 6 are no longer considered canon, while the novelizations of episodes 7 to 9 are canon.

True, however, they are constantly pulling things and characters from Legends.

I'm not sure I understand the point of bringing Hayden back. Unless he is going to be in flashbacks? I'd be more excited to know if they are bringing James Earl Jones back to do the voice.

I know a lot of SW fans that didn't even like Hayden in the first two movies he was in.

I think it's more about the character being back than the actor. If you never watched Clone Wars, you might have a bad opinion of Anakin, but he's obviously a central character and the series really fleshes him out. Could be flashbacks, could be him as Darth Vader. This is supposed to take place ten years after Revenge of the Sith.

I haven't seen Clone Wars but I don't really have a bad opinion of Anakin. I think I'm one of the few SW fans that actually enjoyed the prequels. I just know a lot of people that didn't and hated the actor.

My point was that in the story they plan on telling he's not Anakin anymore, he's Darth Vader. So it must be for flashbacks. I guess we'll see. I am looking forward to it.

You really should watch Clone Wars and Rebels, especially since now with The Mandalorian and other upcoming series and movies they seem to really be continuing a lot of the stories and characters from the animated shows. Which makes me super excited!

Are you not a fan of animation in general or just what you saw of the Clone Wars? Because it does start out a little on the kiddie side but things get more serious pretty quickly.

I just feel like fans who's watched the animated series will be in such a better and different place than the fans who only saw the live action stuff. Seeing Bo-Katan and Ahsoka was amazing, but if you never watched the animated series, they were just random characters. That makes me sad, I wish more people watched the animated series!

Sure, you can read up on things or watch YouTube videos explaining things, but that's no replacement for you to experience the full story for yourself.

I really need to get back on track with these. Anakin is a much better character in the series then the prequels. Most the of the acting in the prequels was just horrible is what ruined them for me.

Still have my handy dandy watch list, Mae . Just need to buckle down and get them watched.

Yeah that's an annoying thing is that a lot of the Clone Wars was shown out of order. I don't know why Disney+ doesn't let you watch in chronological order.

Word of advice, Bill - don't worry about canon or non-canon. Honestly that's little more than a marketing term to me. A good Star Wars story is a good Star Wars story, regardless of medium.

The Marvel-published Darth Vader series is pound-for-pound the best Vader stories I have ever experienced outside of the original trilogy, and they're not canon. Whether or not it enriches the characters, that should be only thing you think of when deciding whether or not to embark on a particular SW story. My 2 cents.

Have you read any of the Star Wars novels? You're missing out on some damn good stories if you haven't. Heir to the Empire in particular is poised to play a huge part in the Mandalorian.

That's the main reason I want to watch the animated series. The relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan has always been the crux of the entire saga for me.

This! So much more then with Luke and Vader who had such little interaction during the films. One reason it's absolutely heartbreaking for me to watch the end of Revenge of the Sith.

Those Vader comics sound like something I could get into! I'll probably wait til they do an omnibus or HC of the entire series. Lord knows I don't need to start another comic collection.

As it was mentioned earlier, if it was published after Disney acquired SW, it's canon.

One great thing about the Darth Vader comic is Doctor Aphra, a character created for the comics, and recently having her own comic spinoff. I really hope we see her in live action, too, maybe even in the Kenobi series?

Ahhh yes, you right. I coulda sworn the Vader comics were much older.

BTAIM, my point still stands - doesn't matter if its canon or not. If its a good story or not, that's all that matters. I've read non canon that enriches the characters and the extended universe. Conversely the sequels are canon and they're largely dogshit.

One great thing about the Darth Vader comic is Doctor Aphra, a character created for the comics, and recently having her own comic spinoff. I really hope we see her in live action, too, maybe even in the Kenobi series?
Who knows, but with the way Disney is handling things I wouldn't rule anything out. It seems like they're really getting a handle on how to properly wield this extended universe. I have Favreu becomes the Feige of all SW TV because he is doing a fantastic job.

On the other hand, I haven't seen any of the animated series, and am enjoying The Mandalorian just fine. You get enough explanation in-series to understand what's going on, and even if you don't know the backstories of the characters as they cross Mando's path, it's not really that important to the main story.

Of course, it's nice to know that the backstory exists, and that the material is out there if I want to pursue it. But it's certainly not Mando-tory. (See what I did there?)

Hmm ... I disagree to some extent. The now-canon stuff contradicts the was-canon stuff, especially post-RotJ, so if part of your enjoyment is to experience interconnected tales set in a shared history, you do need to be aware of what is "real" and what is "fable", in-universe.

Even when bringing in characters that were originally introduced in the Legends universe, there's no guarantee they will maintain consistency with their previous histories.

I get you, and I'm not entirely against connective tissue between all these stories being aligned correctly.

However. Let's use what's going on right now with the Mandalorian as an example. Admiral Thrawn was teased and is almost assuredly going to make his debut either at the end of this season or next. The Thrawn Trilogy (written in the 90's) is probably the best series of Star Wars books ever written.

Fans (myself included) are through the roof with the knowledge that Thrawn is going to make his small-screen debut at some point soon. He is a hallmark villain in Star Wars lore because of his menace and diabolical brilliance. Now to me, it doesn't matter that those books are now non-canon, they cemented him as one of the most threatening characters in the universe and fans will carry the knowledge of the kind of threat he poses into the series. You can bet your ass Disney will draw heavily from his exploits in the novels to power his agenda in Mando.

    Ya feel me?

Thrawn was already a major character in Rebels, so Ahsoka was referencing those events. I bet the Ahsoka show will actually be the rumored Rebels continuation.

The books came before Rebels. They used him in Rebels based off of his popularity from the novels.
