This is one of the few King books that I think is a bit bloated. It's a good story once it gets going. But it takes soooo looong to get going.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

I badly need to re-read this; in fact, I think I've only read it once (upon release), which truly was a lifetime ago for me.

I remember thinking it was taking a long time to get going, even for King, but by the end feeling like it had changed my life (thing is, I can't remember why).

I agree, I was pretty much up to date on all King books published at the time, but struggled to get past the first 100 pages or so. I started reading another author at the time, and didn't come back to it until I was in the hospital in late 2003. By that time I was well behind on my King reading, and am just now almost caught up.

Once I got past the first 200-300 pages it was good.
