I think Jeff is about right in the way it should be done. Pre-order for previous customers of each edition before the general public.
I sincerely hope you aren't talking about me.
Not that it's any of your business, but I have one lettered, and one numbered. Both obtained legitimately.
If you are talking about someone else, then you should clarify who that is. If you are talking about me, then you are mistaken, and owe me an apology.
No trying to comment on this post or anything to do with RF, Br!an or the original poster. However, 1. wouldn't it help "Spread the opportunity" if folks were limited to "One signed edition per household" allowing more King lovers to obtain a signed copy and 2. Why would you want both copies? Personally, speaking for myself, I don't see why if you bought a Lettered you would want a numbered. And I would think if you bought the numbered its probably because the Lettered was too pricey or unavailable.
Just asking an innocent question. Quite possible I'm not seeing the angle or motive here other than the possibility to defray the cost of the lettered by selling the numbered of course. Just seeking a little "collecting knowledge" here is all.
I'm adding a comment here to (a) clarify things, and (b) hopefully contribute to the conversation.
First, (a): I believe that Brian is referencing this quote from RF:

I have 4 tracking numbers. Did you split my two lettered, and two numbers into separate shipments?
Sometimes sarcasm doesn’t translate well (I think you’ve experienced that also, Merlin!), and I will admit that I also read this response as RF personally purchasing 2 copies of each edition. And this would indeed be against the prescription that Brian quoted, limiting each person to one copy of each the lettered and limited. From RF’s response, this clearly wasn’t the case, as it was either a joke or he was getting copies from someone else.
Admission: I get in trouble with my wife on a pretty regular basis about sarcasm/jokes not translating well to text, so I don’t think anyone made an egregious error here.
Second, (b): I definitely think that the numbered and lettered are two different books, both worthy of collection! As well as a prototype, dummy book, book block, etc. And I think this is true for a lot of small presses. I have different feelings about people collecting multiple copies of the same rare (usually lettered) book, which are very much debatable (spoiler: I favor collectors over investors, with the understanding that there is some overlap, and that is a little different – though if you would limit each household to one “signed” version, regardless of letter/number status, then this is an even more conservative view – which is fine!).
But in my mind, if there were three different presses that put out (i) the lettered, (ii) the numbered, and (iii) a prototype, each of which had different attributes, I don’t think there would be a debate about owning each copy. I will also say that I view well-made books as artistic endeavors, and that definitely influences my opinion.
The SE
Misery is probably the perfect example of this - the lettered and numbered books are different in many regards: different binding, different materials, different cases… If two different presses produced these versions at the same time, I’d stand in line for both.
And, please know, this is not to at all say that you are objectively wrong – I agree that, especially in a case like this, it would “spread the opportunity” more if each person were allowed only one signed copy. And I don’t expect us all to have the exact same view! As much as I would love for everyone to agree with my point of view (which is correct, of course
), it would make the forums decidedly less interesting…
