First Editions
Bill, you are confused with good reason.
Spoiler:
Senior moment? LOL
When, as collectors, we talk about first editions we are usually referring to the first edition/first printing of the trade edition. I'll address that definition.
There is no single rule used to determine first editions. Each publisher can do whatever they want. In the past there was less conformity to any rule. Now it is a little better with most publishers using the numberline or printing First Edition or using a similar indicator on the copyright page.
A first trade edition is the first trade publication of a book. That edition can be printed multiple times as the book sells and there are more orders from booksellers. The 1st/1st is almost always the most collectible version of the book. (There can also be more than one state/issue of a first printing which can be determined by points of issue.) As long as there are no major changes to the book the reprints are still bibliographically "First Editions" although later printings. As collectors when we say "First Edition" the first printing is implied. You'll notice on eBay, or ABE, etc., sellers will often refer to later printings as first editions. They are bibliographically correct, but that description can be misleading to a collector.
A second edition results when the original publisher changes the book significantly. The Grant editions of The Gunslinger have no later printings. They are three different editions.
If it states First Edition and there is no indication of a later printing, such as a numberline ending in a number higher than 1 or dates past the first publication date, then it is likely a 1st/1st.
If a numberline is present and there is the number 1 present then it is a first printing of that edition. Not necessarily the first edition though. Later editions can still have a numberline which is an indicator of printings.
There are always exceptions to the rule though. Black House has a numberline that begins in a 2 and states First Trade Edition. That one is a 1st/1st.
BCEs can have a full numberline. Always check other indicators such as the color of the boards, pastedowns and end pages. There are also textual clues/differences and printers marks/gutter codes that help ID first printings.
A First Thus is a first printing of a book that was previously published but with added text. The Stand Complete and Uncut is a first thus.

A book to help you identify first editions is essential. I have several although not the one that Bruce showed.
was offered an item I do not collect... but curiosity got the best of me on it's value... LIKE NEW DTII Orange Wrap Plume ARC with the Publishers letter??? Thanks!!!
That is a nice proof to have - not as scarce as the various Gunslinger proofs but definitely one of the harder DT proofs. I'd say at least $400-500 but perhaps a lot more. I don't recall what the last copies sold for but there are too few around and changing hands to establish a true 'market value'.
I would like to point out that the first edition first printing of Black House has a number line starting with a "2". I guess it's the publisher's (Random House) custom.
New Zealand (pronounced Noo Zeeland if you want to get the accent right...)

Simon I notice the Second Edition too. It is funny, but the most current edition is actually the most inclusive.
I really appreciate the info. I utilized a guide published by George Beahm to identify my first editions and never really got into the "why's" and what not. I am aware of most of what you explained, but some critical elements were still learned from your post.
1. Dead Zone ARC (blue cover). I paid $50. Good deal or no? Is pretty beat up, so isn't pristine by any means. http://www.ebay.com/itm/262148571172
2. What is a Misery (red cover) proof/galley worth these days?
3. Eyes of the Dragon Poster: NOT the ones on EBay currently. This one was sent out to friends and family on New Years Eve in 1987. What is this worth do you think? I can buy it but not sure how much to offer and they are asking a lot since they say they doubt there are many left in the world.

I have no idea on value but that poster is awesome! Didn't know it existed but I want it now

I'd like to see a close up of King's signature on that poster. I'm not sure it is legit.

I have closeups. Should be legit 100%. My contact worked at Viking for 20 years. This was sent out to people that worked on the book I was just told. Evidently there was 1000 or so of the other EotD posters printed and then this was very short run as a thank you for people that assisted with the book (and were high enough up to be worthy of receiving anything). I believe the "illustrator" was initially the only signer, but Viking looped in King to sign them before they went out. It was very few people that even received them. Upper management and longtime employees working on the book as a Holiday thank you. The EotD posters you see on EBay were evidently a 1000 poster run and there were signed ones out of those too.
The poster in question here was massively smaller run. The person laughed at me when I compared them and I'm confident the person knows what they are talking about at this point.
Assuming it is and can be proved legit, what do you think it's worth? I've never seen one, but some of you have vast more experience than me. They are going to want more than $500 I think on this one. The other items I've purchased were a great price in my opinion, but this is such a random thing and I think neither the seller or myself really knows the value of some of this stuff as none have ever sold that I could find.
p.s. still wondering what this Misery pre-release is worth? Saw a less than perfect one on ABEbooks, but only 1 so not sure of value. $150-$200 or no for Misery ARC?

Reason: added info about the OTHER EotD posters that people already are aware of and how many were printed

$500? I don't think they are worth that much... no offense but I would be hard pressed to go over $250 on it.
I paid $75 for a Misery proof with an issue--bumped binding, I think--early this year (or perhaps end of last year?!) from Betts. When I realized I already had it, I resold on eBay for $85.
My first Misery proof came from DT.org during Shannon's big sale in 2013 for $50. That one was perfect.

I like that EOTD poster. Never knew it existed. I collect promo posters like that. As to what it's worth, something like that is worth what a collector will pay since I doubt there are any previous sales to go by. Personally I wouldn't pay $500. However, since I like it and collect them, the highest I would go would be $300. That's just me.

Ahhhh Shannon, now that brings back memories!!! LOL LOL

A "specialist" poster collector gives even more insight! thx!
Yeah, they are throwing out big numbers for things that were given to them from Viking, but that's supply and demand!
Christine S/L with sub 500 numbering. Mint condition, but slipcase has a bit of rubbing in a couple of spots I think is all.
Thanks!!
Curt
p.s. That signed EotD poster will be on Ebay (or is already) soon. Also a 2nd edition Insomnia signed/inscribed to lead editor I think or someone involved somehow. Lol...I can't remember. Sellers sent me the other items, so are legit at least so far if that helps.
Probably a hybrid thread question here but I'm really wanting to start collecting SK U.K. 1st/1st and have no idea what they go for or where the best place to start my hunt would be. Is there any reference material anywhere that could help me with this? I'm wanting to start small as far as price and work my way up slowly to the holy grails. Thanks!
Edit: Ok, duh!! LOL. I found the very convenient listing here on the forum of 1st/1st but it doesn't really state what the values are :-/.

Check out the prices on the UK Ebay site. They are priced at £10 each, but don't usually sell.

I worked from a spreadsheet from The Collector site that has all the 1st edition identifiers (link at the bottom of the Collector homepage), but it not up to date with newer titles. As for values, as Alan says most can be found on eBay for about £10 or less. But older Uk 1st can be scarce and pricey, for example Carrie in fine condition (if you can find one) up to $1500. If you wish any help finding them or valuing specific titles or sourcing new titles just PM me.
