Now I am curious. My 1st/1st CARRIE is pretty much brand new, and was signed 9/8/78, with a funny circle written on top of the '8'. At first I thought he had written the wrong year and then changed it, but now I'm not sure. Anyway, I wonder what it might be worth.

The signature is interesting. Legit, no doubt, but looks rushed, especially the "King" where the "n" is almost non-existent. To me the most inconsistent feature is the lack of a hash mark across the "7" in the date. After King's sojourn to England in 1977 he almost always crossed his 7's. The lack of a hash mark is definitely unusual. I agree with your initial impression that he wrote the wrong year "78" initially and corrected it by writing a "9" over the "8."Originally Posted by ur2ndbiggestfan
The 8 is def overwritten by the 9. It is a rushed signature, and not great, but i would say genuine.
I have a Dead Zone signed that same day, and it actually looks different than that. The date on my signature - 9/8/79 - is a little cleaner, so maybe he signed this one at the end of the day....strange that he'd mess up the year, though, considering he was probably signing a stack. I've seen a couple others also signed that day.
Notably, mine DOES have the line that crosses the '7' in 1979.
But the name looks about the same. I'll have to post a pic of mine at some point.
Maybe he drank a couple of Mountain Dews before he signed it. I'm pretty sure I bought the book from L. W. Currey back in the 80s.

Everyone knows I suck at judging a sig, but the sig looks good to me. The 9 for the month and the one changed in the year look like they were written by a different hand though to me. Anyone else? Is it possible the person who got the sig was stupid enough to try to correct the year themselves?Those 9s just look that drastically different to me.
You're right. And the hash mark after the 8 has a line on the top of it the other hash mark does not. It's a pretty weird signature, that's for sure. The two 8s look the same, but the 9s are different.

The 9s do look different but I think that might normally happen with a correction when you are trying to write bolder. I recently made a subtraction error in my checkbook and had to correct about five subsequent entries (I'm pretty anal about that). My corrected numbers look quite a bit different than the others (i.e. larger, bolder, etc.)

Like he was sick and tired of signing stupid books, forgot the slash to seperate the "8" from "79," added a "7" without the slash, then drew the slash in (note the darker ink), then spazzed out and wrote "8" again because he was still thinking Sept. 8, then realized that he meant to write the year, and corrected that...and probably threw the book in a box and stopped for the day...

You have to give a better description than that IMHO. There are quite a few "vagaries" involved in that edition from what I have been able to learn over the years. For instance, I'm pretty darn sure that I have one, obtained and certified by "Shibus", but others have claimed otherwise with good reason. It's a tough edition to nail down so you need to show exactly what you are talking about I believe.

What do you think a fair price for a NEW LIEUTENANT'S RAP would be? I'm talking about a numbered, signed copy. Not a proof. No envelope or peace necklace. I haven't seen one for sale in ages. All I have seen recently are unsigned proofs and other out of series copies. I think they are really scarce but not sure how to place a value.

I'd say between $1500 and $2000. They do seem exceptionally scarce.
