I have two unusual books that I believe to be rare, but am having difficulty finding any useful information as to their value.

The first is a copy of "The Breathing Method" published by Chivers Press (UK), the second a copy of "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" published by Thorndike Press.

Both are hardback large-print editions, presumably published for libraries. For value, I am only able to find "Ex-Library" copies with the accompanying usual defects. In this condition, the prices I can find are in the $175.00 range.

My copies of the books appear almost new, with NO library markings or notable defects, so I'm curious. Any thoughts on value?

I'm not an expert but I do have an idea about the market value of 'non-ex-library' copies... or at least and idea of what I'd pay.

These two have been discussed in this thread before. For info, I paid:

$87 for Rita Hatworth and $25 for Breathing Method.

Just a quick shout-out to everyone that's responded here, by e-mail and by PM to the "Breathing / Rita Hayworth" post. There really are some serious collectors here, and I wish I could post some of the private messages, comments and offers that I've received. I wasn't sure if anyone here would even recognize the books, or if there would be any interest in them. All I can say at this point is that I've been very surprised by the responses.

Mr. Rabbit Trick, based on multiple messages from other members, it appears that you got an incredible deal on both of the books, so congrats!

I'm still interested in comments from others. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

PS To anyone here from the US, Happy 4th of July!

Could people please give me an idea as to what a ledger for Dreamcatcher is worth?

The DREAMCATCHER ledger is often overpriced IMO. I'd say $75 is reasonable. That's what I paid for mine and I've seen other copies sell for similar prices.

Ok, what's a DREAMCATCHER ledger? Whatever it is, I want one.

The story goes that Mr. King wrote "Dreamcatcher" by hand in two ledgers. Prior to the books release, the "promotional ledger" was produced and sent to booksellers to promote sales. It was designed to have the appearance of the actual ledgers, and featured the cover artwork for the novel on the front cover. I don't remember offhand, but think it included reproductions of 8 or 10 of the interior pages.

iowabob I also have both books. In the late 80s I paid $200 for Rita Haworth and Shawshank Redemption at a large book fair in L.A. You have to remember this is before the internet & it was the first and only one I had or have seen untill these King sites. In 1995 when the lazer disc (yes lazer disc)came out I was able to get the book signed by Frank Darabont & 2 of the actors Gil Bellows (Tommy) & Mark Rolston (Bogs). I don't remember what I payed for The Breathing Method I'm sure it was not cheep. It has also been signed but by Mr King inscribed (to me) BE WELL STEPHEN KING. Please let us know what the final price is on these books.

There are two editions so make sure you know which one you are buying. Not sure of current prices. There is a numbered edition of 100 copies signed by the illustrator and in a slipcase. Then there is an unsigned edition of 500 copies, no slipcase. Read the descriptions carefully if planning to buy.
