I second that. Being fairly new to collecting King (< 5 years) I always love to get the chance to learn from the masters!

    Hi, I'm Stephen
I wanted to introduce myself and tell everyone how excited i am to be a part of this awesome community. Almost a year ago I caught the SK bug. I was just collecting paperbacks, but it was like an obsession. I had to find them all. I wanted to try autographs, but got burnt early on by a fake on ebay. That discouraged me for a while. After talking to a few collectors, thanks David (wizardsrainbow), I realized there are sellers out there that you can trust. So I am very proud to say that I got my very first S/L edition. Desperation #1172. I've already placed my first order at Betts Books and they exceed my expectations. I guess I am just really excited about this very expensive hobby. Next I will probable need advice on moderation. haha

    thanks

    Shannon's Advice On Moderation

Ummmmm ... Moderation ... I believe that is a shortened version of the Latin phrase

    "Moderiti Un Al Stephen Kingtini"

which, delicately translated to English, means:

"There Is No Such Thing As Buying In Moderation When It Comes To Stephen King Collecting"

    *****

If everything stayed at market value, then I wouldn't have a problem, because then I could plan and/or spend my money in a controlled fashion. But, Gosh Darnit, when you have the opportunity to buy this or that for great prices, it is DIFFICULT to say no. I'm getting better at saying no, but Cheese-N-Rice, it's difficult work. Like, right now, there is something I want badly ... Z ... but at the same time there is also something that I want VERY VERY VERY badly, something I'm not even going to sneakily hint at because some people might try and win the auction out of spite ... not that that can happen because IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII am going to win it ... ME ME ME!

But anyway, as I was saying ... I should moderate, but a part of me ... the majority, actually ... will probably end up trying to go for both WANT items.

My wants have become needs. We're gonna need a bigger boat.

Thanks everybody for the welcome. Yea Rabbit Trick I guess i will need to get David's account info so I can go ahead and set up a direct deposit.
Also thanks Shannon for the very useful info. If I find myself out in the street, starving, and rocking back and forth clutching a S/L copy of Salem's Lot maybe I will still be able to say it was worth it. haha

I've got to say, I happened across this site by chance awhile before I registered. Invaluable info and it directly stopped me from potentially buying forged/phony King signed books. I had no clue until I got here how bad that problem really is. Please accept a collective thank you for that.

Ok heres the plan I was wanting to make one last nice little purchase before I started to save up for "The Stand" S/L Ed. Prolly just something like $200 and some change. Should I get 'Salem's Lot Gift Ed. or get "IT" 25th Anniversary Gift and maybe a 1st of "The Drawing of the Three" I know this is a matter of opinion but I would like to know what everybody thinks.

If you want to receive something before you start saving up for the big purchase (which is how I read your post), then I'd say:
the 'Salem's Lot gift edition because it's already been released.

If you are ambivalent about the wait, then perhaps you should get the gift edition that contains whichever story you enjoy more.

Ugh, gift editions!? I dislike gift editions very much. I would take the two hundred bucks and buy whatever is first on your list that ISN'T a gift edition.

    Let's see ... a quick look at Betts for $200-$250 ...

Prime Evil S/L (PC) for $225
Under The Dome S/L for $185 (pageblock discoloration, whatever that means)
Riding The Bullet S/L for $199
Talisman Gift Edition signed/inscribed by Peter Straub and 5 artists (Thomas Canty, Steve Gervais, Rowena Merrill, Don Maitz and Bernie Wrightson) for $225
    Gauntlet 2 S/L for $200
    UK Insomnia S/L for $250
    Whispers S/L for $150
    Borderlands 5 S/L for $125
and thats not to mention the numerous signed first editions available.

Why get a gift edition when you can get an S/L?

Just don't get a gift edition, pretty please? lol

Just a note that the s/l Riding the Bullet is NOT signed by King, only by Garris. Only the lettered edition of Riding the Bullet was signed by King.

I got started collecting the "gift" editions. Most of them can be bought for well under $100 (except for Salem's Lot and The Green Mile). If you don't have a lot of cash to spend, they are a nice way to add handsome books to your collection. The Salem's Lot gift edition is beautiful and well worth it. Some folks don't care about S/L editions at all. Most of the ones on your list above are anthologies, and many don't like to collect those either. Signed trade editions can be a crap-shoot if you don't know how to analyze signatures. It is all a matter of choice for each collector.

If you are not looking for signed books, I would go for the Salem's Lot. It is a beautiful book. I personally also like The Green Mile and The Talisman/Black House gift sets. Both can be had for under $150. In fact, Grant Books still has their special offer of the Talisman/Black House gift set plus the DT 7 Artist Edition for $165.00 - https://secure.grantbooks.com/z-sk-dt-7.html -- Lots of choices out there for you. Look through the Catalog on the forum website and see what books may interest you.

    John, thanks, forgot about that.

Eric, I agree, to each their own. As a collector that is going to buy everything, I will have gift editions in my collection. I just don't like them. I also don't like them being called gift editions. Shouldn't they be called first editions? lol

I personally don't understand the rant about gift editions. Specifically, we don't call "gift editions" "first editions" because they aren't necessarily firsts (which usually means first trade edition). I second ordering the Talisman/Black House/DT gift set direct from Grant. While you're there, check out some of the older books they have for sale. Every time I order something from Grant, I also make it a point to pick up a dust jacket or two, because you never know when some poor sap will sell a Grant first with no DJ for next to nothing...
